1) is the question left out completely? If not, where could it go?

would this be possible:

or could the question be shown as a tooltip?

Then click on image to go to answer it / see other answers.

I think that looks very good

Queries/comments:

1) is the question left out completely? If not, where could it go?

2) the [CATEGORIES] button above the image could be left out - if the header is going to be included

3) EDUCATION there is a category - that could be left out as well I think

would this be possible:

mouser thanks for your nice words.
+1 :)

[1] when clicking on [selected] there will be a dropdown which will display the categories and when a category is selected, the last picture and question posted in that category will appear in the slideshow. I'm afraid if there will be tens of categories the dropdown will be annoying being too high. I'm also not sure about what to do with the "topics" there.

[2] I think a black background will not match the rest of the design and think about the fact that there could be uploaded pictures with small sizes. Big slideshows looks great due to the large size of the images

e.g: buildinternet.com/project/supersized/default.php

[3] in the picture, there is no header and footer. I'm a little bit confused about how people will get on the previous page or homepage.
(Adi, I numbered your points.)

The main idea of the slideshow is to focus on the images (and questions) with as few distractions as possible.

[1] misunderstanding: I meant these to be links to the Categories & Topics pages.
I'm not even sure if that's a good idea. Maybe best leave it out completely.

[2] Point taken. Thoughts: A black background is commonly used for slideshows - think of Flickr and Picassaweb. They are otherwise white background so maybe it doesnt clash so much because of that?
The blue background could be used successfully - but only if it is kept very minimal IMO.

[3] Normally you get out of a slideshow by clicking on the close button - if that said [Home] instead of [x close] I think it would be clear (?)
Re header & footer:
Slideshow is about images. They have to be the focus.
Say we used the layout of the individual question page and put the controls beneath the image - many people would have to scroll down to see the full image or to get to the controls. That's why I dont want the header.
Also dont want the header or footer becasue they distract from the images.

~ I'll try doing a mockup of a blue page with the links across the top and see how that looks.

love the look of it anyways :)

not 100% sure of the pricing -
had a quick look in their forum and found this (talking about an iphone app - but it was the pricing that caught my eye):

It will sync with your Goalscape Connect models on the server to display current goals, with deadlines and daily tasks. This will be delivered in the next few weeks and the initial implementation will be available free with Goalscape Connect.

Right now the perpetual license (€89) for the standalone version, Goalscape Desktop, includes a 6-month subscription to Goalscape Connect. In the second half of 2011 Goalscape Connect will move to a subscription model, independent of Goalscape Desktop.
https://goalscape.te...e-application-coming

wondering e.g. what they mean by "perpetual" and if you can work completely offline [sounds like you can]

I'm working on a slideshow page - here's ideas so far:

Keep it simple.
A Black screen with:
  • buttons
  • Image
  • Question shown below the image

You can reach the slideshow page two ways
     1) link in the header (slideshow sorted by date)
     2) if you select a category or tag, relevant questions will be shown, with a link-button: [view as slideshow]

Here's what I proposed a while ago for the slideshow buttons:
[newer] [PLAY/PAUSE] [Older]  [Random] [selected topic] [x close]

slideshow004.jpg

I hope that's fairly self-explanatory (?)

What's missing though is the ability to look at just unanswered questions.
Any ideas how I could introduce that?
Another button? [Unanswered] --> reads [Show All] when I click it ?

[newer] [PLAY/PAUSE] [Older]                  [Random] [Unanswered] [selected topic] [x close]

thanks for any suggestions

Living Room / Re: complete 180 on mouse preference - what's the best cheap mouse?
« Last post by tomos on January 04, 2011, 07:08 AM »
Okay, I exaggerated (a little). I don't lift the mouse every time I move it; just a lot of times.

This can't be that uncommon? My wrist tends to stay fixed, acting as the pivot for my hand. So that means lifting the mouse a lot to get the cursor to travel plenty of distance. This just feels a lot less trouble than moving my whole arm to get the same cursor movement.

funny, I hadn't noticed it before but I do the same (luckily I never did go for a wireless mouse)

I have the MX310 as my main mouse - because it's symmetrical - so can be used left & right. It's lasting well, but unfortunately not made any more - so good to get a few tips here

Just to understand better, do you have a knowledgebase open when you try that operation?
-cranioscopical (January 02, 2011, 10:30 AM)

do you need to have a file open in order to clip from the web? (just checking - it's not clear to me from the responses)

Thanks for the recommendations of surfulater, cranioscopical, cyberdiva, and J-Mac.

Am I the only one to be sadly surprised that it doesn't close on Escape?

Ctrl+F4 and Alt+F4 are simply not my understanding of fast-to-use hotkeys!

I can relate to that - I wish PDF readers closed on escape - then again I've set up a Ctrl+Q hotkey to close the active window.
On topic:
my experience is that the Surfulater developer (dc member Nevf) is responsive to ideas in the programme's forum

I was also very tempted to get the Local Website Archive, but then I saw their bundled offer, and suddenly it all summed up to a very large amount of money for a program I might never use... The painful truth is that when I had purchased and installed surfulater, the register box said (before I pasted anything into it) that my key was for an older version... Yeah, I already had version 2, but never used it and forgot about it.

The upgrade price is 50% too...

@Curt
in case you havent seen it - there's a couple mentions of Surfulater in this and following posts
Re: Web alternative to Scrapbook extension?

Someone else was highly recommending it lately - here somewhere (Perry maybe?)
I loved it but never used the latest version. I gave up on it only** because I was using InfoQube anyway and the programmes overlapped (i.e. I now use IQ for webcapture).

** well the price vs. the amount I used it was a factor as well

Anyone know how this works with images? - there's no info about it on their site (that I could find)

I've been using both CI and SI for over 10 years, but I've never been able to catch them comparing images to anything other than size/timestamp. Selecting 'content' for comparing is quite useless, as a diff of 1 byte is enough to trigger as a difference.

it's new in version 4, from the link above:

« Last post by tomos on December 30, 2010, 08:53 AM »
Well,
I think we can call that a release :) - I've changed as much as I'm able to -
there wont be any structural changes made to the site till Monday (Jan 3rd) at the earliest.

If you go visit it askapic.com keep in mind that the posting process has yet to be streamlined - at some stage (before or after your visit) have a read of the problems listed here. If you discover a problem that isnt listed here, do let us know about it  Thanks!

Current Problems (mainly the big ones :p)

1) You have to tag an image before it will be accepted:
  • you have to add a comma "," after the tag word for it to be accepted
  • the status of your selected file is not indicated - e.g. if you forget to add a tag to an image, you will get an error message and the site will 'forget' the selected file's details so you'll have to srat from scratch (your question is remembered though).
2) Facebook login works a treat - but I'm not sure what shows up on your Facebook homepage (nothing in my case) - do let me know! [seems to be showing okay on FB]
3) Currently you are UNABLE to change any details on your Profile page
4) Categories are not properly associated with the questions i.e. on Categories page they all show as having zero related questions.
5) "Unanswered" tab on the homepage shows all questions
6) if you ask a question and then login using name & password, you may get an error message but the login should still be successful
7) Some emails take a long time (I get emails instantly in my gmail a/c but have had to wait hours with other email accounts. But note that you can post instantly - without having gotten your regristration email. I dont know why this is - some problem with the godaddy email accounts maybe.

To see a tag page on Quora, enter a tag name in the box at the top and watch what happens. If the tag already exists, you'll see it in the auto-list. To see even more, click "search" at the bottom of that list.

Yes, the search though is for the topic you entered - there's nowhere you can get an overview and browse - I presume they simply have too many tags.

if you add a tag to a question, you are asked if you want to make it the "context" - I presume this is like making it the main tag.

It's an interesting site but I wish it were more accessible - that I could simply browse topics/tags. Because I initially looked at a couple of questions about food (I think I clicked to 'follow' one foodie persons posts), it now only shows me questions about food, and only suggests food related topics... I know I could search for e.g. Software but I'm not looking for anything specific - I'm just thinking out loud here really...
