General Software Discussion / Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

Does any of all you geniuses know the name of the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" executing file in XP? I simply cannot find where it might be or what it might be named.

 :tellme: Please!

does WDS keep indexing your drive(s)
or
can you tell it to do it -
  • manually
  • or, e.g. at a particular time each day/week/whatever

Sorry, my previous answer was not too precise. WDS will index whenever a change is made and you don't use too much CPU. If you thinks NOT, you can right-click the icon in the Notification Area Clipboard02.gif and choose to Postpone Indexing (so now I might disagree less with dk70 than before) - or you can click Index Now.

WDS will btw also scan your Appointments and Contacs in Outlook.

WDS 3.01 will index when your PC is almost idle. Remember at first setup to tell it to scan all of the pc (if you want this). Minimum is My Documents and E-mails only. I have so far (3 days) not seen any CPU usage from WDS at all, at least not any worth mentioning - so I disagree with dk70 on this.

some have had problems with 3.01 - will reindex everything for every boot.

Your words made me watch my WDS 3.01, but its giving me no problems at all.

Probably from WinSnap ...  www.ntwind.com

I've tried that one several times because so many spoke well of it, but I have so far dumped it again, because the author has made it both hide and popup on the same button, Escape. Every time I would make Flashnote or several other programs hide, by pressing Esc, WinSnap would popup and say Here I am! Too silly!  Yes, one can disable this feature, but wouldn't it be so more right if the two functions were seperated? I think so. I even wrote the author about it, but was only told not to have Esc as a hotkey for other programs!!!

netsnippets - http://www.netsnippets.com/

Thanks for the info but if you look back I started this thread in 2005 and bought a copy of the Pro version back then for half price.

I am not impressed with is the lack of any active development. In the last two years there have been no updates at all

NetSnippets are gone; now its eSnips Uploader toolbar + 5GB free storage!

One major drawback of mtexplorer is that it doesn't support deep directory structures: ....

... and he promised to consider this in a future version.

You're right; and I was giving praise too soon.

Will there be any update? Only Jack and God knows, but I think I'll write him too (Jack, that is), and encourage him to write. I like this little app.

Carol recommended DM2 to me before but I couldnt even find a helpfile for it (it could be me !?)

The "help files" in DM2  are called Overview, Settings + Support > Installation
- and are online only: http://dm2.sourceforge.net/overview.html

I often don't like what I see when I look at the hordes of shortcuts in Start > Programs, in XP: its not tidy! From time to time I have tried various programs, in order to make this part of my computer nice and tidy to look at, and easy to handle. Now I belive I have found the solution: mtExplorer. I use it to handle the shortcuts in Start > Programs (in Documents & Settings), but you can of course use it to view any other set of folders on your machine.

It is a lightweight program file - doesn't install - and will open really fast, considering how many informations it must first collect. Does of course support Drag and Drop.

mtExplorer V1.1

Please send comments to jackr at mtexplorer dot com.

mtExplorer is a minimalist multi-pane file explorer. I have tried quite a number of dual-pane and tabbed file explorers, but none of them could give me 4 to 6 Explorer panes simultaneously in a single window.

So I wrote mtExplorer, which can be configured to display 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 Explorer panes at once. You can drag-and-drop files between panes easily. There are no menus, status bars or fancy toolbars to get in the way. Buttons are kept to a minimum. The right-click context menu is used to perform most operations.

mtExplorer consists simply of a small executable file. Settings are written to an INI file in the same folder as the EXE file. No installation is required. You should be able to run it from any folder, or pop it into a USB memory stick and run it on any Windows PC.

Proceed with download.

IME MS don't really respect the settings you enter WRT scheduling!

??? !!!  >:(

Try turning off automatic update altogether and see if that fixes your problems.
-Carol Haynes (March 30, 2007, 03:30 AM)

I have done so, now, and: Yes, that fixed my problems on CPU usage!

"Check on Sundays only!" Ha! They have been giving me the finger!

No wonder 'some' are angry with Microsoft...

Bet I know what it is ...

Did you upgrade to "Microsoft Update" rather than "Windows Update" ?

I had huge problems and found a number of articles in the MS knowledge base admitting that Microsoft Update hogs the CPU during the first startup each day while it checks your system and the MS website for updates.
-Carol Haynes (March 29, 2007, 06:28 PM)

Yes, it was Microsoft_Update. But I already had the auto-update feature set to check on Sundays only, so why would it check at every upstart each day?  Following your advice I have now changed it to Windows Update - so, we're going to see...

I always disable system recovery completely...

I too have done so, now,
- and the CPU usage is some 5%, so the sinner really was System Recovery!  >:(

Seems I was too hasty, again. After re-start the CPU usage was very high for very long again, and with System Recovery diabled, tthe sinner must be someone else. Maybe BITS or maby some major error, I am far from done with re-installing all the broken programs - in fact, I have no sound at the moment - and there are some hidden errors as well: Outpost will open, but not respond, even though I have re-installed the entire Office 2003; I cannot send or receive mails.

The extreme CPU usage is really only yet another minor frustration  :(

Windows Desktop Search 3.01 for Windows XP requires Microsoft Genuine validation. I like it, and think it is fast and much better than the old standard search engine. Only, the look of it is not too smart, yet: what an incredible waste of space!

searchtray.png
(hmmm "waist" is "waste")  :-[

This should of course not take up any more space than a single icon, when not in use. May such an improvement be a coding snack, or is it a full meal?

Date Published: 2/20/2007

Overview:

Windows Desktop Search (WDS) 3.01 is a minor update to Windows Desktop Search 3.0 that adds: support for indexing UNC files, additional support for enterprise deployment, and stability improvements. WDS 3.01 installs on Windows XP and Window Server 2003, but is not needed for Windows Vista since the WDS component is already included in Vista. Windows Desktop Search 3.01 helps you to find, preview, and use your documents, e-mail, music, photos, and other items. The search engine in Windows Desktop Search 3.01 is a Windows service that is also used by applications such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and OneNote 2007 to index application content and deliver instant results when searching within that application.

If you choose to install and use Windows Desktop Search, you can search for e-mail, documents and other files located on your computer. No information about the files on your computer will be sent to Microsoft as part of this process. Instead, Windows Desktop Search will index the content of your computer and store the index file on your computer. You can customize Windows Desktop Search to index only specified folders on your computer. Windows Desktop search will not store copies of e-mail or documents after they are deleted.

, process explorer has a "services" tab that lists which services that particular instance is responsible for. Some instances serve a *lot* of services, but it should at least help you pinpoint it.

Yeah, I noticed a hughe number of services for this svchost, and of course one of all these is the very sinner itself - but Who? I realize that the reason for the present lang-term 100% CPU usage (1 hour by now!) might not be System Recovery after all; this host also runs Event Notification, and various others:

I always disable system recovery completely...

Taking XP into use, I have been trying to get use to the very high CPU usage right after every PC upstart. But the day before yesterday I had a bad experience with a failed removal which corrupted several program that I then was forced to re-install. After this, svchost has been VERY busy, as you can see on the picture: some 90% CPU usage for 36 minutes! Its not the updater (set to work on Sundays only), so I take it the sinner is the Recovery System making fix points or whatever. IF the Recovery System was excellent, I wouldn't mind this extreme behaviour too much, but knowing from bad experience that Recovery System really sucks and won't recover anything, this behaviour kind of upsets me.

Can I somehow disable Recovery System's automatic fix point setting?  :tellme:

- if you know what I mean.

I've used Volumouse for years.

Here's the original page: http://www.nirsoft.n...utils/volumouse.html

I haven't had the need to try anything else.

I so agree with you on this, skywalka. I too have been using Volumouse for several years, and have never had any need to try something else: Volumouse is THE easiest way of controlling the volume - you can have it anyway you want:

volum.png

On my PC I just point at the taskbar, and scroll. Thats it!

And when you are happy with the settings, you can hide the tray icon.

Silly me; I have forgotten to tell, that you don't need to install version 3 or 4, because the new installer will ask you first to remove the old version. Version 5 is a fresh installation.

And the link was http://emea.0mm.com/...S50RO6AV0aez0Dqqe0Eg
7223
The listed price with VAT included is $37.76, or €29.54

7224
thats €50 + 20% VAT

£20 with VAT included can hardly make €60 - please fix your calculator!  8)
7225
I cant even find Version 5 at their website - the latest version there is 4.2.50  :tellme:

- they do say so: registered customers will be offered version 5 before the public is notified about the new version.

As for what is new, they only say very little in the add:

What's new in version 5?
NEW – Now you can convert Word documents into PDF files, and PDF files into Word documents, making Expert PDF the all-in-one PDF solution
NEW - Convert multiple files into PDF files at the same time.
NEW - Compatible with Vista, the new operating system from Microsoft.

- of course that is compared to version 4, and 'we' upgraded from version 3, so what was new from 3 to 4 is hard to tell today, isn't it.
