N.A.N.Y. 2010 / NANY 2010 - Update December 24th
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on December 23, 2009, 11:21 PM »
The NANY Challenge is an annual Challenge at DonationCoder where coders of all levels are challenged to pledge a New Application for the New Year and release it on January 1, 2010.

The NANY 2010 Challenge is fast approaching the climax of the Event -- this is definitely the exciting bit of the Event when we see the NANY Entries unveiled! So far we've had:

This is the last call to all programmers within earshot to drop by the forum and pledge to participate in the event.  Remember, there are no winners, but everyone gets a prize -- a very handsome and unique DonationCoder mug commemorating the event.

Even if you're not a coder, you may find something fun to check out from the early NANY releases and teasers.  Stop by and request some features or make some suggestions to the participating coders -- they need your feedback!

NANY 2010 Prizes
The NANY 2010 Store has opened with a great selection of items available for the Entrants in this year's event. Full details in NANY 2010 - Prizes

Twigatelle Update
Here's the next update on Twiggles progress with his NANY 2010 entry: Twigatelle. Thanks to Head in the Clouds for allowing us this view into the whole NANY process!

Teasers / Entry Focus
Crush MCP
The Master Control Program is a small tool running in the background that monitors all tasks and programs. After making a snapshot of all running processes, new ones will be tracked in a deletion list. This will allow you to see and get protected if a virus or other unknown programs are automatically starting in the background without your permission to raise your security while working.

LittleRunner 1.0
A little application that records a runners schedule.
LittleRunner_beta_mainscreen.jpg

Features
  • Records routes and descriptions
  • Records runs and times, along with comments
  • Shows individual run speeds and overall average
  • Allows both DD/MM/YY and MM/DD/YY date formatting
  • Allows specification of distance units in either miles or kilometres
  • CSV export
  • (Very) basic printing

Twigatelle 0.0.0.0.0.0.0.1
Twigatelle is a simple game developed in Java inspired by any number of those pachinko-type games where little thingies bounce around hitting other thingies in a slightly hypnotic way. The name is a contraction of ""Twiggles"" and ""bagatelle""
twigatelle01.png

Features
  • Bouncy balls.
  • Things that bouncy balls hit.

Reimbursement Tracker 0.3.0
Keep track of the money others owe you! This is a tool created to help a user manage his/her reimbursable expenses and designed to create an attractive, easy to read, and easy for the boss to understand list.  It has the ability to print, or to print a professional-looking receipt to a thermal printer (receipt printer).
ReImbursementTracker.PNG

Features
  • Keep track of date, location, description, and price of each expense.
  • Negative prices (e.g. returns or rebates) supported.
  • Print to thermal printer!  (Note:  only the Custom Neo's is officially supported right now -- as it's the only printer I own to test on!  However, I am working on a plugin-like system to allow other printers with different commands to be easily added.  Most printers share similar serial commands, so this should not be a big problem.)

Mini NANY Submissions
Mini NANYs are submissions that don't fit under the same stringent rules that a normal NANY does and can include scripts and other submissions that don't really fit into NANY proper. Now just about anyone can enter a NANY!!

Agreed re pdf printing. I think I was following on from the print>thermal and hand to person idea; so it'd be print to pdf and email to person (hopefully in one action)

There are command line pdf tools, as well as developer tools (probably paid)

Yes I wasn't sure how you'd connect to IOU, and didn't even know how widely spread that acronym was used?? Maybe it's I-O-U and so the name could be U-O-Me?

That makes sense concerning the job list too: that makes it unlike a statement and more like an invoice. It was those part payments that was confusing me  ;)

What about UOMe for a name?

I'll never get a thermal printer (never say never, I know), but I would email a pdf receipt, so I'd be keen on that functionality. Do you get the option of just outstanding or all items?

It functions a bit like a statement, but it looks like you're just adding credits and debits and totalling them? Statements also can have the concept of an actual invoice being paid, and then therefore wont appear in future. That is you can apply a payment to particular fees.

Looks nice.

I have Redmine page now, so I would really appreciate to have ideas written down on project page too. It would be better for me to manage them using this page:

-fenixproductions (December 22, 2009, 02:50 PM)

I encourage all users interested in this project to hop over to the DonationCoder RedMine site and add your feature suggestions there.

You'll need to create an account if you want to add Issues / Features; and when we finally get to play with this (eagerly awaited) application the bug tracker may also be a handy tool.

RedMine has some great features: I note that fp has also started on his wiki, and it's where the files will be hosted.

One that immediately comes to mind is something like TrimMean where the extreme high and low values are not averaged.

Averages per something is also good.

Concerning graphing: could you opt for csv export that can be imported into a spreadsheet and then graphed. In fact, csv export would satisfy stats fiends like me as well as it'd be hard to beat the statistics abilities of spreadsheets.

I'm all for little: so maybe export is the way to go?

STOP PRESS: The NANY 2010 Store Opens

We've added this year's prizes to the
Screenshot - 22_12_2009 , 8_14_34 PM.png

nudone has produced some really wonderful graphics for this year's NANY Prizes  :-* And there are going to be some very proud owners parading up and down the street or sitting prominently in the tea room at work places around the world.

Getting Your Prize
Each Entrant that fulfills their NANY 2010 Pledge will receive one of our unique NANY Mugs delivered to your door. When redeeming their item there are other items there that can be purchased in conjunction with, or instead of the mug that has been allowed for in the voucher that they will receive (a monetary addition may be required). Please note that the NANY 2010 Store prices are currently in their inflated state with a hefty markup; these will be adjusted when Entrants are redeeming their vouchers.

Interested in joining the fun?
If you still have not Pledged your entry into this year's NANY Event, there's still time to get in on the fun! Read the NANY Instructions then head on over to the Pledge Thread and start coding! If you're looking for an idea we've been collecting some in the Suggestion Thread.

Current NANY 2010 Items (liable to change: we're working on some other nifty ideas as we speak  :))

Modified Graphics
The opportunity exists again this year for any Entrant to modify the graphic used on their prize. If you would like to use a modified graphic please note:
  • You are responsible for the modified graphic
  • Email me for further details

The time to new year is too short to code a complex program.

You're good Crush: just get the first bit done and the rest can happen later  :)

The NANY Challenge is an annual Challenge at DonationCoder where coders of all levels are challenged to pledge a New Application for the New Year and release it on January 1, 2010.

The NANY 2010 Challenge is generating a lot of interest again this year: so far we've had:

UpdateGraphic - CodyMonster.png

If you're desperate to get an entry in for this year and you have not Pledged: There's still time to join the NANY celebration! The idea is simple, and everyone is welcome to participate regardless of their skill level.  There are no winners, but everyone gets a prize -- a very handsome DonationCoder mug commemorating the event. If you know any coders, please give them a nudge and ask them to come by and give us a little bit of their time.  We know sometimes it's hard for coders to come up with good ideas, so we started a special thread just for people to post project ideas for others to consider working on; don't be shy posting your ideas.  And if you're a programmer, why not stop by the Pledge thread now and pledge to release something new by January 1 2010.  Help us make it something special -- we promise to make it fun!

fenixContacts
The main idea is just to create free and good contacts book application. For a long time I've seen dozen of tools which could make me happy but none of them did. The only reason is the lack of one feature: customisable information fields. This is the most important thing to me because in most of the cases I don't really need to see emptiness. I have never had a need for (i.e.) twenty business fields to be kept if all of them are blanks. I had found one application which could be OK but it was not free... so I've decided that someday I will write it by myself. And here I am!

Features
  • Customizable Information Fields
  • nice searching - both: LiveFilter and Advanced search
  • import / export tool - with support for the most common file types (like vCards) or something more complicated (online databases handling)
FenixContacts.png

Create Dummy File 1.001
This software is to make files, of variable size, which do nothing. It's uses can be to test a disk, internet speed or to fill a free space on a USB disk. Once the USB is full, there will be no space left to write, so a virus will not be able to write to the USB disk.
CreateDummyFiles.png

FarrWebMetaSearch
FarrWebMetaSearch is another generic web retrieval FARR plugin. Unlike ewemoas Webgrab this plugin will show results in list mode. It is therefore targeted at web sites delivering list-like results.

Features
  • searches are configured via an ini files, one for each 'search'. The file will specify search url and a regular expression to capture the result.
  • search terms will be specified through the FARR input box

Hey Crush: yes this is a neat idea (not that the other one wasn't). I like the idea that I can look back and see when things happened so that I can fix up problems.

Maybe even mash in some of the filesystem data about the actual files? Changes in versions? How would you capture automatic updates, where the programme downloads and runs and updates files?

The application will allow routes to be programmed in and then runs to be recorded against those routes.

with GPS or mapping? ... that would be neat!

Nice idea. It's been written about quite a bit obviously.

Personally I use RoboForm and am very disconnected from my passwords (like I don't care) but then again I'd be lost without RF, and hence back it up and put it on USB drives etc...

But having some way to work out (and therefore calculate) the password is a nice idea (especially for absolute disaster recovery  :o ) so I'd probably use it to generate the passwords

OY! 45.. hmm then it is looking more and more like last year was a bit of an anamoly in terms of participation, that we're not likely to match.

We need to balance our pessimism with reality and optimism... I think  :D

Some of those 45 withdrew (as per graph), some withdrew quite early (actually, looking at it over half of the withdrawals were within 10 days of the pledge).

Of the 9 that didn't fulfill their Pledge 6 didn't post a Teaser, so there was not much correspondence after the Pledge.

Of course you can't make a definitive assessment of the seriousness of the original Pledge from those numbers, but at a first cut I'd be aiming for 40 (Total - Withdrawn) Pledges.

But then again, we only need all our Pledges to fulfill plus 3 more to pass last years number of releases.

What do they say about statistics?

we need to beat last years record .. that means we still need like 7 more pledges to top last year right?

We had 45 Pledges last year.

This was the outcome:

I just found http://www.7-pdf.de/ that seems to have some nice features:
  • Created hyperlink indexed and tagged PDF (PDF files)
  • Production of tables of contents of paragraph styles
  • Windows Explorer shell integration
  • Command Line Version / PDF Batch Converter 7p.exe

(Bolding mine) I wonder if automatic hyperlink creation is unique amongst freeware?

Whilst we're not doing reviews... have you used PDF-XChange?

I think it's my favourite at the moment, especially the free viewer; but the pro version has many of the same features. I've always been tempted to purchase the PRO version, but the need hasn't quite tipped the balance yet. Also, it's a fairly competitive category of software these days, so actually choosing one among many isn't easy. I'd be interested in a your short comparison if you had...

You are so right about the name: you can see where they get it from (like Surfulater), but, I mean, really??

Looks are an interesting point. As long as they are functional is the main thing, but if software can also be fun then using it is not so much of a chore (which is pretty important at work  ;) ).
