This combines simple notes & PIM with home server, an interesting concept. However it does not seem to be discussed in the Cobian forum.  I noticed that the only security was by IP#, not password. So if you open up the server to a future library stop, it could be too open, unless you had other internal firewall security.

Hi Folks,

I thought the thread might be misunderstanding the CreativeDocs.net license so I did a little checking.

===================

Creative Docs .NET: Free Vector Graphics Application - Cybernet
http://cybernetnews....raphics-application/

Hi, I am one of the two authors working on our spare time on this project ... And a few words about the licence: you may freely use and redistribute the binaries, code and examples, as long as you don’t charge anything for it. You may not resell Creative Docs .NET, for instance. And you may not (yet) modify it. But you can do what you want with the artwork that you create with the software. There are no special restrictions, even if you produce commercial illustrations.

Pierre

=========================

CyberNet is being added to my own start page, and likely to the biz software resource list.

First I also looked up the Creative Commons licenses (which were not designed for software but are used sometimes) and there is some similar possibility of ambiguity in the language.  As far as I can tell the intent is to stop commercial distribution, not usage by those involved in commercial enterprises.

Shalom,
Steven

Hi Folks,

The great amount of work in those programs is not so much the backup up and restore, but puzzling out what to save from where. And don't ferget that the program can have one profile, or various profiles for other users, hard to get at when not signed in. And the actual config could be in the registry, an .ini file or various data files, or some combination of all. And the user may have defined the location differently than the default.  And you might have file lock situations to puzzle out, on backup or restore.  And things can change from one release to another.  And what is a configuration ? Does it include addresses and filters, how about saved searches and such ?

So there is no such thing as a generic "backup the configs".  The backup programs for Eudora or Outlook or Firefox can be pretty sophisticated, and difficult, in their own right.

Shalom,
Steven

Bluetack, the next section, is simply one example .. quite hefty with the software that comes with, maybe too complex and hefty. MVPS and HPGuru are others, and may get their own listing.  Also you may decide to work this through an Untangle or Spiceworks or appliance method, if applicable.  The theory is that prevention is far superior to treatment. The problem is that the cat-and-mouse game with the malware guys is quite complex, and hosts files were more designed for blocking ad servers than malware-contents.

Living Room / Re: What's the best registry cleaner? Ask Leo says: none
« Last post by Steven Avery on July 06, 2009, 05:33 PM »
Hi Folks,

Cyberdiva, one thing I noticed about SuperAntiSpyware (generally top-notch) was that .. even though I simply wanted it for an on-demand scan .. it was very pushy about putting stuff into the boot-time (possibly hoping that I would need it some day on a real-time upgrade .. clearly it could check for any updates at the beginning of an on-demand run).

Wondering .. was SAS involved in your unruly school children fight ?

As for registry cleaners, probably the best single thing to do is to uninstall with Revo Uninstaller rather than only Add/Remove.  After each uninstall you will end up deleting a couple of paths and/or registry entries that would have been left over.  The registry cleaning industry, when it is not outright sham and scareware, is much ado about very, very little.  If you happen to know a certain type of registry entry is quite recognizable and harmless, you could delete them with CCleaner or Eusing or somebody (the more conservative the better) .. however generally your time would be far better spent elsewhere.

btw, a good number of the techies on the net make $$ one way or another, directly or indirectly (google ads) with the sham & scare products, so they tend to not want to bite a feeding hand and say .. e.g. .. "beware of all the uniblue and paretologic and any google-advertised registry cleaner and speedup products, they are junk and dangerous".

The situation with registry and drivers are similar .. when your system is running smooth and decent, a good way to bring that smooth running to a screeching halt is to do an auotmatic software-directed "cleaning" (registry) or a software-directed "update" (drivers).  And the registry is the more dangerous of the two.

Hi Folks,

Understood.

Clearly we are compiling this list with the idea of "as-is" use in biz, not trying to repackage or modify or combine in new packages (anything like that would require special license considerations). However, license wording can be a smidgen intimidating or difficult.

Added a few more editors, quite interesting to read about these.

HFS ~ Http File Server and Cobian Amigo added in a "Home (Office) Server" section, with url to some helpful Lifehacker articles.

Drive Manager and Window Seizer and System Spec and System Spec spinoffs Device Info and Optical Info from Alex Nolan added.

Driver View and ServiWin from Nirsoft added.

And set up a "Whois" section with about five softwares.

Cubic Explorer added.

And began the "Resource" section, taking the urls from here with a few others.  And will add some of the more significant and obvious later.

So far we generally do not list Net .url comparable resources (that would be a separate Net 2.0 biz thing, not hard to find, and less applicable to business situations) .. however I may add a few of the better online WhoIs with those programs.

FileMenu from LopeSoft added to a new Windows Explorer section (one that is planned to be kept limited to the very highest-grade-helpful items).

We repeat this next url all the time with the new additions since a link from the "current" Donationcoder posts will come right here.

Eula, contact check would be be helpful, especially on the last two.

Registrar Lite from Resplendence is available in an earlier nag-free version from Major Geeks.
Regseeker from Hovercraft, is free for personal use only.
RegSafe - by ImagineLan, unclear if free or paid software.
Registry Commander is 2003 defunct.,

And UltraEdit can be considered the programmer's commercial package leader, with EditPlus having many fans as well. Since it is unlikely that everyone in your company will need a programmer's editor, the pricing situation may still be light.  E-Editor is also well liked, and has at least a partial open source direction, so that part of the project may be added to this list.

Hi Folks,

PDF-XChange Viewer - good to see the free version is ok for commercial use, added.

A43 - added, with the recent updates being a factor.  Also JExplorer added.  There will like be a few more (after those two and Free Commander and Q-Dir).

HFS - HTTP File Server likely to be added shortly, also Notepad2 and PSPad.  FileMenu Tools, want to look at it and see where it fits.

SearchMyFiles - Nir Sofer  and ExtraSearch Free - Crave Worlwide added, although a EULA/contact check is needed on Crave.

Note: there are not many "free for personal use" in this category, and we have one good one noted at bottom.  Most editors are either complete free (often open source) or straight commercial, usually with a free trial.

Oh, I made a division-of-sorts between programmer and notepad oriented.  Clearly any such divisions are a bit queasy, however if you want to help my rather guessed-at methodology, share away.  Here, or in message.  Thanks.

Hi Folks,

I am really talking only about "on-board" logging and analysis.  The logging of file date original access is already a built-in Windows feature, simply a part of the file attributes.  If you go further, such as website visiting logging, then you decide how much you want to retain.  The last 2 weeks ? Ok, then do not complain about it if you get a malware that shows a date from 3 weeks ago. You will simply have less of a chance to determine what was the website that was visited right before the install.

Since this is all on your system, I do not see any real security problems. You are making the decisions, and it is potentially helping your malware analysis.

Hi Folks,

Barney, I agree with you 100%.  Keep in mind that the limited functions, such as showing any installs before the file date and time, would be easy programming, even with the information already available in Windows.  Maybe its an autohotkey or autoit app ?

Then if you added additional logging, such as web-sites visited, you would have some additional programming.  (That is where you run into the issues of where to do the logging from, and the various browsers and firewalls that are used, stuff like that.)

So there could be a modular implementation, however in the long run you may use up .07 cents of disk space, so the malware autocrats and beaureaucrats would prefer to sit in their "anti-virus laboratories" pontificating about what their heuristics and behaviorists declare.  They don't really want you thinking too clearly about your computer system.

Steven

Hi Folks,

Just thought I would mention that when I asked on the Piriform forum for a way to prevent the registry editing facilities of CCleaner to be part of the program (e.g. in an office install) .. the reply from a poster-moderator was a trick with Resource Hacker (and likely the other programs on this thread could do similar).

Thought that was pretty kewl.  Not sure the Piriform programmers were and legal beagles were so happy, if they noticed, however it definitely showed a techie mentality.

btw, the fact that a person is a "programmer" does not mean that they can work with 50 different languages and 500 different libraries and toolboxes.  You might have to spend weeks of study to change a dialog box :) .

Hi Folks,

A lot of times when there is a malware problem (on your puter or fixing somebody elses) you have an idea where it came from, a lot of times you don't.  If you don't, you have a recipe for a future disaster.

Malwarebytes is probably the leader in finding out info these days, SuperAntiSpyware second.  Kewl.

One thing they (any company) never seem to want to study is the DATES of the files of the problems. They are not shown to you, they are not in the log, they are nowhere to be found (afaik, there could be exceptions).  And once you delete the problems, all trace is gone except in backups.

Now Windows does a pretty good job documenting the date and time of when a file appears (granted the malware could try to adjust that, similarly you could have a guardian to prevent the 'adjustment'.  The malware could also fudge the issue some if it is the type that replicates and deletes, however what I am sharing will apply in MOST cases.)

So if you had two things :

1) The ORIGINAL PUTER DATE of the problem issues (I'm not sure if that extends to registry entries, whether they log .. or could be easily logged .. in that manner).  On files Windows keeps a couple of dates, sometimes the names are confusing, but the original "onboard" date is one of them.

2) A decent log .. not just the event viewer, but a real log-file of web-pages, downloads, java loads, .exe and .dll file creations, stuff like that.

You would be able to backtrack and get a good fix on the original source.  And log files are "no big deal" .. 100 or 1000 entries a day or so is simply nothing in terms of computer processing.

And note: until there is more .. actually the windows file dates gives you a pretty decent defacto log today, simply by searching on the date and time.

Then #3

And most of this could checking be automated !  Then a little program could fish out what happened right before the file install.  So it is a lot easier than even looking at the famous "event viewer".  A lot of time you would then look at the data and have an "aha" moment, or at least find a likely culprit or benign cause.

Why do I mention this ?  I fished out the data for a false positive from Emsi very easily in that way (I could link to the threads).  First I checked the suspect file date itself, then I searched on Locate32 (I think that is what I used, maybe Total Commander did not have that date search handy, or maybe vica versa) by the file dates to see what was new at the time of the suspect.  And I found out that a potential "keylogger" was simply part of a respected task manager package that I had installed that gave me the .dll.  And a phone call to the developer put all the dots together, very simple.  (Emsi showed no interest at all in this method of discovery .. none .. zilch. ) Yet if I did not have the dates available, very unlikely that I would have found anything.

(Well, later I discovered McAfee also had a second lead, far less exacting, one that helped confirm my research. The file was documented as coming from the task manager package -- on a page where they show what was involved in the installs, surprisingly nice from McAfee).    For the afficianados, the Convar "PC Inspectpor Task Manager" program used a Dart library component .. one that had been used in an earlier version a decade ago by a parental-control keylogger .. such is the sad state of modern malware analysis. In fact Emsi had previously been informed about this false positive of this .dll on an earlier thread, but their bureaucrcatic methodology was in the way.

The malware industry does not like to revamp their thinking very easily .. heuristics and all ...  they are an entrenched and somewhat stagnant crew, at least in some ways.

Your thoughts on this 'new paradigm' possibility for discovering the malware sources ?  It is actually all quite trivial on a technical level, mostly it simply needs a bit of coordinated action.  Basically, it seems like an important component, a very simple and strong weapon, is simply ignored in the malware prevention world. (When was the last time you heard a security vendor, or even a Wilder's techie, recommending to check the file date and match it against the files on your system ? )

The simplest aspect of this could be implemented very simply.  Here is the file(s) in question .. here are any installs at that time.  At the very least, you would start with things like .. this .dll or this .sys links to this .exe and these files, they were installed at the same time.  The more overarching log defense structure is the higher level recommendation.

Hi Folks,

Thanks.  I will be trying those out (I have a message on my screen about compressed (zip) folder being invalid, and I want to test and see which tells me best the source, before my next reboot).  And this led to some new entries on the free-biz thread.

Hi Folks,

Reading, this does look interesting, although likely not up to the heftiness of using Online Armor with more, like Avira. Plus Spyware Blaster, Malwarebytes, etc.  Although the last two could probably integrate nicely with K7, or just about anything.

What I would do is run with just K7 on a secondary puter for a while, no other real-time stuff, to get a feel for the ups and downs. As long as they have a 30-day trial and are not known for uninstall difficulties, however that might require asking around.

There probably will be various discounts on this down the pike.

Some places say they are an Indian company, with maybe Japanese ownership or major influence, something like that.

Hi Folks,

Truly nice to work with.  Esthetically A+.

Question .. there is a "custom" boolean choosing of e.g. this calendar and this calendar together.  One of the main features  I want in a calendar, allowing for easy layering in various ways.

However I do not see that you can save and name the "Custom" element, it looks like you have to regen it each time, limiting the use a lot.  Am I right in how I see this ?

The task list is more a lead-in to the calendar than anything else, which is ok, this is meant for calendar and reminder with visual clues everywhere. (Color-coding is nice.)  Surprised that there is not a "priority", however there is enough layering and esthetic usage (nice in a calendar, you want to enjoy looking at it, as you think of all the things you may or may not do) that I can design what I want that way.

My "custom" concern stands.  It sort of limits the purpose if you can't save the grouping and re-get at it quickly later.  The boolean aspect is very nice, adding to the feature discordance.  I would be tempted to buy this anyway, for the many niceties.  Thinking in the next hour and a half.

Living Room / Re: Troubleshooting an XP bootup lockup

Hi Folks,

I did learn a bit about the hardware activation.

If you have a puter than is native XP and you have the 25-digit Windows number (eg. a sticker on the puter) and the puter hasn't changed much, the WGA activation can go through fine, simply puter to net to MS and back, no discussions.  Granted this may require a special-OEM-style XP install CD, or maybe not. And I dunno what would happen if the earlier owner reports a sale or box-separation-anxiety to Microsoft (e.g. an enterprise that junks en masse 100 3-yr old PC's to a middle-man when they get the latest and greatest).

Along a smilar line of inquiry, twice when I bought a Dell from somebody, Dell took the transfer info for warranty without bothering anybody about "another XP".  Now they don't have a requirement to be the MS gendarme on used box OS, so that does not say exactly what is technically allowed or permitted.  And Microsoft could look at personal transfers differently than middle-man xfers, especially if it comes down to an activation conversation.

Another point of interest.  If you want to do the updates to SP3 without triggering WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage, their method of trying to control the OS turf) it seems that that is doable through a special IT prof/network download on the MS site. However everytime there is another update, there is a potential trigger/snare, and I dunno if you would stop at SP3 or if Microsoft continues with similar sidesteps that you track down.  And if you trigger the WGA (necessary for automatic updating, for better or worse) you might want to be fairly confident the registration is going to go through fine. And/or you might want to have a nice pre-trigger image or you might want to downgrade to MS 2000 or side/upgrade to Linux Bells and Whistles.  The MS prodding is quite ugly on the XP puter.

Hi Folks,

  Breezing through the Wilder's thread:

Is anyone currently using Panda Cloud Antivirus
http://www.wildersse...wthread.php?t=240731

it appears that Panda has been trying to fix the major blunders involved in (e), the critical issue,

"We've concentrated on fixing detection/disinfection/false positive issues with this Beta2 as well as some added functionality for managing the Recycle Bin (undo option). For Beta3 we'll concentrate on more functionality and added platforms (64bits, W7)." (page 10)

and that the new Beta2, out today, might have more acceptable behaviour.  The original Beta was more an Alpha, not well thought out in regard to quarantine and deletion, and folks may be able to try out the new Beta2 safely after the Wilder's crew have a few days looking it over.
