General Software Discussion / Re: 'Everything' is one FAST file search engine
« Last post by kartal on November 11, 2008, 10:29 AM »
I had the same issue, I am using win+s (search) :)

Yes, it's really damn fast. _And_ it doesn't need to update databases. :-*  Away with locate32 for me ;)

I'm wondering how I can use Win+F an a shortcut for Everything instead of the (useless) Windows search... Setting it in the options doesn't work >:(
702
Shades, I cannot say if it is faster but it definetely is snappier than others when browsing over VPN.

I love http feature, this thing is like a file server at the same time. I just hope that it would support non ntfs volumes even that means slow indexing on those drives
704
A.Salamander does not feel any faster to me. Probably Xyplorer is faster than AS thou.
705
Thanks Darwin! I will try A. Salamander
706
Thanks Darwin, I knew you were a nice guy!

THe thing I am looking for is an app that can cache the directory and files while it is not in use. I mean all the modern web browsers do file and link caching to speed up, why not file browsers? It should be possible!
707
Does it have network caching?

Home network is probably fast, but I am espeically interested in vpn and over the internet browsing.

A good balance of both

What´s up now, do you prefer a big software packet with many great search features or speed?
709
Hi

Due to my job I need to use Vpns and network browsing alot. I am wondering if there is any epxlorer replacement that can browse files faster. All the things I had tried lterally hangs once in awhile when I try to get file listing and I do hate that.

I tried

Freecommander, Ultra explorer, Xyplorer, Nexus etc These are all fine file browsers but they are not that good when it comes to network browsing.

ideas?

Living Room / Re: Whats on your desktop?
« Last post by kartal on November 09, 2008, 08:48 PM »
I have never used the "desktop" in my whole digital life (which is over 16 years).  As soon as when my computer starts windows, it is cluttered with windows and I never have any need to show desktop.  So I have really nothing to show :)
711
Hey that is great. I have not tested your application, but I really really welcome open source desktop search. I just do not like desktop search stuff from Ms, Google and bunch of others. But I hope yours will be successfull.

I will try tonight hopefully.

Btw are you planning any thunderbird and contacts support at all?

Thanks for the friendly welcome :)
I hope Curd won't take my comment as a personal offence or something; I just couldn't help but laugh :D

J-mac,

Yes it exports to html and txt, but all the selected notes are in the same file. How am I supposed to take it and put in another application. I am not a programmer and I do not have time for trying to figure out how to dice an xml file either. That is what I am talking about. If you know a way to export as seperate files with propoer names etc please let me know , otherwise its export features are useless for me, especially the image export is useless because it names the pictures with some jibberish names that has no relation to original note image or tags.

I am looking for a compression utility that does not install itself. I am sooo frigging tired of installers. Even portable versions of compression apps are coming in installer form which is beyond me.

I understand that, but this is an issue for those of us who use multiple file system.  "Everything" cannot even see the drive at all, let alone indexing. I have encrypted dirves as well.

I guess I should have said only couple hundred megs :)

500mb is alot normally. But as I said I just have very established and very very efficient information system here, that is also big in size. For people like me evernote online does not make sense, especially when their import export features are very limited. It recognizes only couple file format because. The problem is that you put it in evernote and trying to get the data out is a problem. Yes you can export html. I checked their html output, it is very underdeveloped and there is no interface that will let me choose how I want my export to be.

SO at the moment I am only using for sketching :)

Jim, the thing is I have multiple gb of data that I keep intact. I have no intention of trying to dissect my personal notes and data to fit in that range. On the other hand their privacy policy is not convincing for me to go forward and split my data.

I just do not like per month data transfer thing. That is very gray and shady area. I want to see a clear picture and a clear plan. I have the same problem  with amazon s3 thing. They will tell you how cheap it is, but when I make my calculations it becomes very costly. I prefer a very clear plan rather than some vague transfer limits.

I actually think that both their software and online service is very good, especially for what you pay. I hope they stay in business. But as I mentioned I am just not interested in their online business especially because their privacy policy just sounds like Google`s and on the otherhand some 100 mb would not cut for me and in the end it would be very expensive if I start using it for my projects and my online deliveries( considering that I already have hundreds of megabytes of notes and personal data that needs to be moved to evernote). If it was offering super strict privacy policy(totally on customer`s side) and offering at least  1 gb a month for 5-15$ I would not mind paying it.

On the otherhand if they improve their desktop software, expand ink notes and import- export features I would have no problem even paying 100$ for it.  But without the features I am looking for it is kind of pointless.

Anyways I hope they stay in business because they really offer something, a product unlike many web companies that just offer jibberish.

I use version 3 but without online stuff. I have no intention of using online storage. But I like the tool, I would not even have any problem with paying for an advance version of the software.

I do not think it is in beta, it is released as far as I understand.

I was hoping that they would give it away for free. Since v3 is free, it just does not make sense
721
qnext does not run on my system, I even tried installing newer version of java
722
Mike, I already use poppeeper :) I am looking for a solution that mixes messaging and emailing.

I also have a FARR alias that lets me send emails on the fly :) (without opening thunderbird or outlook). I am looking for more eloborate solutions.
723
Yeah I know that one, but problem is that if the user is offline and if you turned on "hide offline users) it makes it rather useless because first you need to find the person to send.
724
Hi

I am looking for a messaging client that can handle multiple protocols. But the main thing I am looking for is something like writing a message but the message will be email to the user via given smtp server. I know I can use my email client. But I would like my email client to only handle important emails. Also I do not want to type names, sometimes I need to send very short messages-emails. Also many times most people do not use messaging clients, this should fill the vacuum for me

thanks

Licenced vista users should just install windows xp.  I just did that this weekend on my wife`s laptop and her laptop runs twice as fast and I do not need to spend another 100 bux to run it smoothly.
