Living Room / Re: Recommend a USB cable to me!
« Last post by Deozaan on August 26, 2025, 02:49 AM »
Thanks for the responses. I actually made a purchase back in March and forgot to follow up here. :-[

I did go with a $10 2m (6.6ft) toocki 100W USB-C to USB-C cable with integrated display from Amazon. It's nice to see that choice validated and recommended by someone else here. :)

It hasn't seen a ton of use, but I've liked it when I've used it and don't have any complaints about it. Most of the time 2m is plenty, but I think it would be nice to have another one that is 3m for the rare occasion that 2m just isn't quite enough.

And here's a pro-tip: If you're using it to charge something you'll be holding in your hand, maybe plug the end with the screen into the charger and not the thing in your hand, or plug it in facing away from you, so the display doesn't blind you the whole time. 8) Especially if you're using it at night or in the dark. :D

And thanks for pointing out the toocki power meters to me. I hadn't seen those and 2 for ~$13 seems much better to me than the ones I'd looked at earlier.

I have toocki 100W USB-C cables from AliExpress, a couple have integrated power displays but the majority just have a colour changing LED on one end that signifies when power is being drawn, plus one of their small USB-C pass-thru LED power displays that I can plug in if I want to see what's being drawn.

I've found their cables to be good quality for the price.

Got a 286W GaN charger that I use for charging laptops also through the use of PD trigger adaptors.

Amazon links below but I got them through AliExpress, (even cheaper):
toocki 100W USB-C to USB-C w/ Display
toocki USB-C Adaptor (2-pack) Power Meter
Dell PD Trigger adaptor - not the one I have, mine has integrated V/W display and it works with Dell (who use an ID chip in their chargers so that non-genuine chargers don't charge at full speed and down-clock the laptop).

General Software Discussion / Re: How to check drivers?

I'd check AMD for updated drivers, they have a tool you can download and run that will tell you if there are later drivers available.

General Software Discussion / How to check drivers?
« Last post by rjbull on August 25, 2025, 05:24 PM »
I have an odd problem with an Acer laptop and an Anker USB-C hub.  The hub's USB-A and at least one of its USB-C ports work, but its SD card reader doesn't.  When I put a card in, Windows can't see it at all.  Strangely, USB Safely Remove does see the card, but thinks it's empty.

A web search showed various postings on the Acer forum about problems with USB-C ports, albeit not this particular one.  One recommendation was to update BIOS.  Mine isn't the very latest, but updating BIOS would be serious if it went wrong, and there's no guarantee it would work anyway.

Another suggestion was that maybe the drivers needed updating.  This is something I've never done before.  As far as I can see, the Microsoft driver I have is dated 2006... so maybe there's a newer one.

What are the best and easiest ways of checking drivers, please?

Umf... Glow gives a nice list, but doesn't include dates, or which ones are out of date.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Windows 11 round edges transparency
« Last post by PetrKo on August 25, 2025, 06:55 AM »
There’s a simple workaround in Screenshot Captor to capture a dialog with rounded corners:

  • Make sure your dialog is active, then use Grab Current Screen.
  • Screenshot Captor will capture the entire monitor and automatically preselect the active dialog.
  • Click Auto-Adjust (shrink) region ...this will round the corners.
  • Click Crop image to selection.
  • The resulting image will show the dialog with the rounded corners cropped.

Tip: For best results, place your dialog over a white background (for example, open Notepad and maximize it).

Find And Run Robot / Re: Open Source?
« Last post by HwapX on August 18, 2025, 11:54 PM »
@Mouser, would you ever consider releasing the source for FARR?  I've been using it for 15 years but am nervous about it's continued existence and bug fixes.  For example, I'd happily patch the changing monitors crashing bug https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=53791.0

I'd also like to add an in memory cache plus integrate search everything as the backend for FARR.  I've got that working mostly as a plugin, but I want to combine plugin and history results together.

I have exactly the same question and concerns. While I'm not currently using FindAndRunRobot, I love this software and would like it to be preserved and maintained.

General Software Discussion / Re: Order coffee over ssh

Yes, it is expensive, and I'll never buy it for myself, but the bag my son got me was pretty good. I'm no fan of light roasts, but this almost made me change my mind. Too bad more coffee roasters don't do dark roast decaf though

This is crazy.  Kind of expensive ($25 for a 12oz bag? Eek!), but my son got me a bag of the decaf, and it's... an experience.

True, $25 for 12oz is steep. Specialty coffee often charges for unique sourcing or roasting, but if taste difference isn’t huge, sticking to a local brand on sale is the practical choice.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: AlomWare Toolbox, mini-review

I should probably add, just on the "useful stuff" coupled with "responsive developer" front...

I have long used ClipboardHelpAndSpell's paste templates to handle renaming podcasts. These days, lots of downloads have huge and random-looking names, and because I can rarely listen to them close to the time I downloaded them, I rename them with something meaningful with something date-y stuck on the end.

Which works, more or less, but there's one particular thorn in my side: a short podcast that I never expected to hang around for long, so I created a paste template for it, of filenamennn.mp3, where nnn is a three digit number. After a while, hand-editing the number to be the next one in sequence got annoying, so I started adding 10 in the template after the nn9 download so at most I'd only have to look up to see the most recent then add the correct last digit to the pasted string.

I started wondering if I could do something more clever with Toolbox.

And, with some (okay, quite a bit of) help from the developer, I now have a script that goes off and looks to see what the biggest number in use is, adds one to it and creates the next filename in sequence, in exchange for me overtyping the suggested filename with a three character trigger. [In the process of developing that, I discovered a couple of odd omissions in the scripting language that will be fixed in the next release, and have pushed a couple of new ideas at the dev that may also be implemented soon, relating to static date variables.]

I'm definitely still learning, but maybe I'm just starting to find the gearstick.
