Developer's Corner / Re: Bid for Fix

There's someone that came to this site a while ago that had this same concept on his site for his software- but I don't remember who it was.  He was also very open about his financials in regards to the software... hmmm...

That was something I posted on another board - how the one feature that MS got the most grief for is now the feature that people are scrambling to put back in.

Oh, and there's also Win+X for $0 also.

If we change the word from "fix" to "new feature" then I think it changes. But then I'm always the only one who wants X feature so I'd lose. Then you get into the meta where the users need a forum to thrash out their requests, re-empowering them from what looks initially like a developer-empowered system.

If you look at what's already on the site, it shows that it works for fixes and features.  I think that Fix was an unfortunate choice of words.

I feel like in 10 years, most of us here on dc are going to be using some kind of linux based build your own OS type of thing.

My personal opinion is that we (the generation that remembers 1980s, the rise and fall of commodore et al., the rise of PC and MS) will continue using windows 7, or 9 (which will be the last one to offer a usable desktop mode if my conspiracy theories are correct) till we die. If I am still able to make well use of XP 11 years after its release, I will definitely be able to use 7 for at least 20 years.

Some of us will be claiming in 2047 that MS really f.cked up with windows 18, and that this time people will really flock to linux, which -curiously- still won't have half decent drivers for nvidia video cards or a usable replacement for X.

The ithingie-facebook generation will not care, and each year they will be buying the new ipad n (35>n>25), which still won't have a USB port; or will be forced to use OEM loaded windows 18 and all the crapware installed by the OEMs, which will not be uninstallable on windows 18 ultimate pro HD OEM version. They won't care, because all they will be doing is to watch DRM locked expensive videos with lots of advertisement, published by turnermsnbcaolfoxwarner.

EPIC post. :)

Developer's Corner / Bid for Fix
« Last post by wraith808 on October 26, 2012, 02:48 PM »
Has anyone used Bid for Fix (http://www.bidforfix.com/)?  I was examining ShadowExplorer and saw the link there.  It looks like a good idea, but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with it.

(from http://www.bidforfix.com/introduction/)
1. Bidding - User offers some money to developers to fix a specific issue. User doesn't pay immediately, just expresses his intention to pay after the issue is fixed. User can choose any amount.

2. Bid accumulation - Other people with the same need also bid for the same fix.

3. Developer decision and fix - Developer prioritizes possible fixes taking into account all kinds of motivation including the bids. If an issue rises high enough in priorities of the developer it eventually gets fixed.

4. Delivery and review - A new version of the project is made available free for everybody as usually. Developer claims the fix delivered.

5. User Review - User reviews the new version with regard to the fix and decides how well did it meet his expectations. After the review the user has two options.
(A) Payment - In case the user likes the fix he pays the money offered in the first step. The payment is processed by PayPal and received directly by the project developer.  The user gains the fix and its advantages, good feeling he supported the project and motivate developer to keep up the good work.
(B) Cancellation - As this is an experimental service the users can opt-out and cancel their bids. They are only required to leave feedback.

I see some problems with that flow, but it seems like a good idea...

Disk space is cheap. So is RAM. So having duplicate binaries and whatnot isn't that big a deal anymore.

Personally, I hate having stuff duplicated.  No matter how much space you have, it's never enough.  Then updating... I prefer one central location.  That is, until I don't.  ;D

And whining?  GOTD is a give-away.  That's not a give-away.  I don't know where gift shop came from.  I stated my opinions on the subject... and you still didn't speak to the big question?  Perhaps the answer was I used POP3.  Or I used IMAP.  I just (made the mistake and) asked for your experiences.  Will keep this in mind in the future.  Thanks!

I suppose everyone's experiences are different.  System Restore has saved me more times than I can count; I have nothing but positive things to say about it (and have heard nothing but positive things).

The Best New Features in Windows 8

original.png

I know to a lot, this will fall on deaf ears, but I figured some might like the article. (via Lifehacker)

One feature I'd not heard about and it seems as easy to use as System Restore (which is one of the best features of recent years) is "Refresh your PC"

It also has a really cool feature called "refresh your PC", where you can do a clean install with the tap of a button. Whether you're selling your machine or just want a cleaner, faster installation of Windows, you can do it all in one click. You can even set refresh points, similar to restore points, so you can refresh your PC to the way it was at a certain point in time.

Is there a cheaper non-upgrade option?

I'd like the answer to *that* one.  Doing the math... 99.99 - 30 (your price) - 60 (the more you paid that you needed to) = 9.99.  I'd go for that!

Unfortunately, this Giveaway got hijacked early on when someone posted the comment that it doesn't work with Gmail. It actually does!
However, from that point on, people just kept repeating the mantra "piece of rubbish" without even trying it for themselves. I see the same thing happened in this forum. I hope GAOTD gives it another chance.

I have just collected my gmail post via EverDesk; no problems at all.  :)

The more expensive google version just offers a lot more of features than the standard version. That's All, Folks!

But by now you have all lost the chance to get EverDesk for free. Nelsonish Haw haw!  :P

So can you explain their own matrix posted above?

And even with the ability, as I said, I don't do GAOTD anymore.  Perhaps that was incorrect, but the other limitations are, and I've been burned by them too many times.  Get used to using a product, then your computer crashes.  Or you reinstall the OS.  Or you get a new computer.  Sorry, you can't use it anymore without buying.

You're in a position to dispute what's on their own website?  If so, can you explain how?

IIUC, Surface with Windows RT => ARM chip => no legacy apps & no other operating systems...

Yup.  This is firmly the iPad version of the platform.  Also (I think) means that you have to use the windows store.

But Microsoft has a competing pressure. It wants to show off its software in the best light possible, and controlling the whole experience—software, hardware, and even retail—is how it plans to achieve that.

One of the most telling statements in the article IMO.  It's one of the places where MS's entry into any other market has fallen; having to fit into someone else's design and infrastructure.

All in all, it's a good review.  I'm still not convinced (after this and the other review of Win 8).  It's something that's so borderline that I'm going to have to hold it to see.  And my main hesitance with that is history (Zune, Tablet PC, Windows Phones, etc).  It would have had to pass the pricing test for me to dip my toe in the water, and $599 for the version that I would have gotten is a bit much for a device with a limited lifespan.

It could pass the other harder test - the test of time.  But only time will tell.

I've never seen that!  I'll take a look.  I don't really find this any more intrusive than UAC truth be told, which also happens very often on the mac, which took be aback a bit.  As long as they have the ability, I don't think it's a problem- its when they take away the ability... though I guess that's what you're talking about- that this is the next step.  I think it would be a lot nicer if they changed it from allow to ask, i.e. the way that I've seen it, i.e. I download the app and it asks me because it doesn't know if it's ok.  That seems a better approach than to outright disallow.

And yes, mine wasn't a fresh install.  Along those same lines, I really don't see the problem with not selling the upgrade outside of the app store, especially if it allows them to cut out some of the price.  You have to admit that the price for the upgrade is dirt cheap- I wonder if that's what's behind it.

When I was preparing to get back into things, I was looking at OpenPanel.  I didn't get too far into it before I changed my mind, so can't tell you too much other than it was easy to install their image.  It seems to have fallen by the wayside since I looked at it, however.

There's also a list on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia....sting_control_panels

I've gotten to the point that I don't even look at GAOTD b/c of the crazy restrictions.  Decided to look into this until I saw this comment.

Was quite excited about being able to download and deal with Gmail when I discovered THIS GAOTD version doesn’t. You have to buy the upgraded version to get the one thing that is really needed. I was very disappointed as there are hundreds of email clients with some storing to folders – just none for Gmail. What a bummer.

Just an FYI

And OSX is also restricted to the AppStore and "signed" applications by default

Where is that?  I haven't opted out of anything, and I can run unsigned OSS on my box just fine, so I'm not so sure that this is true.  About half of what I have is App Store, and the other half is stuff I've downloaded through several different outlets and installed and run from DMGs.  If they aren't signed, it asks you before running, but other than that, it works fine.

LOL :)

In terms of that, yeah... unless you're able to rouse the rabble to change the rules, you have to play by the rules as set out.  And those rules are played in such a way that to get ahead, you have to sell a bit of yourself.  And by the time that you get there, you've sold everything that made you an alternative.

And I am pretty cynical in some areas, which actually manifests in strange ways in terms of my final output.

For example, you posted that 9/11 bit.  The reason that I don't believe that the conspiracy theorists are right that it was the government is a two-fold reason.

1. The government has already shown themselves to be incompetent.
2. The government has already shown themselves to be incapable of keeping secrets.

At this level, there would have had to be a frightening level of competency to create the scenario shown, and a level of secrecy on the level of the so-called Illuminati for no concrete evidence of what actually happened to come forth, i.e the grassy knoll and the second shooter.

So, taking these, and going with the simplest solution- everyone wanted a reason and someone to blame, and was asking the government to find out for them.  In it's usual inept way, the government rushed to judgement and released a half-arsed response, that didn't cover all of the evidence.  Now, in their usual way, they try to cover up the fact that they were half-arsed, which then looks like a cover up in general.

It's more cinematic and validating to think that there must have been a cover up.  But I think it's more realistic to think that it's just business as usual.

And yeah, read that book I pointed out.  It's pretty dystopian, but strangely in that, not depressing.  But it covers a whole lot about this, and some of the lines are real zingers.

Oh, and to see the differences (and note that the ones that don't make a difference internally are not included), there's a good comparison on this site where they evaluate the last debate (http://www.news.com....dir2ev-1226501175764).  It's funny that to get anywhere near reasoned reporting on the US elections, you have to look on news sites outside of the US.  But that's a different subject...
