Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Game Review: Defense Grid: The Awakening
« Last post by Deozaan on March 03, 2010, 01:01 AM »
I just tried a couple of the new levels. They are a lot more challenging (to complete without losing any power cores) because the power cores are wide open to assaults from all sides. Pretty fun!

Defense Grid has just released a patch (on Steam) which, among other things, makes it compatible with DLC and adds 4 new levels (free) for Steam users.

* Support for DLC is enabled. Check out the new FREE DLC pack, Borderlands! Four challenging levels new to Steam players.
* Upgraded leaderboard performance - Defense Grid now uses the official Steam leaderboards. Unfortunately, this change resets all existing leaderboard entries, but the good news is that all of the leaderboards are wide open and waiting for your high scores to post. Defend the cores and show others how good you are.
* Corrected a bug in which Cannon towers would sometimes fire twice as often when using fast forward.
* Fixed an issue in which AI audio would still play even if the Voice Over volume was turned all the way down.
* Fixed an issue that prevented the Voice Over volume slider from responding to mouse input.
* The Achievements button on the Main Menu will now take the user directly to their stats and achievements page for Defense Grid.

So why would you want to microwave salsa? Isn't it supposed to be served chilled, or at least only room temperature?

The worst netsplit I ever experienced was when everybody disappeared, except Metshrine/Josh.

If I ever die and wake up in a room alone with Josh I'll know I didn't make it to heaven. :P

I used to use µTorrent (and thought it was great, especially since it's portable (no need to install)) until I started using Free Download Manager. My torrent "needs" are much like 40hz's, so I'll just quote what he already said.

On those very rare occasions I need to do a torrent download, I'll just use the torrent feature in Free Download Manager (www.freedownloadmanager.org) which is my Win D/L tool of choice for everything else.

Note: I'm not a big torrent freak so I don't need to keep a separate client on hand just to do that. Your needs may be different.

Living Room / Re: Defense Focused RTS?
« Last post by Deozaan on February 25, 2010, 11:55 PM »
If you've been out of the RTS loop for a while, you may not know that games like Defense Grid are called Tower Defense games. The Tower Defense "genre" has been especially popular here at DC. We even have a list of TD games with reviews or short descriptions.

My personal favorites are:

Defense Grid: The Awakening.
Plants vs Zombies.
Master of Defense.
Onslaught.

Defense Grid and Plants vs Zombies are both available on Steam. Master of Defense and Onslaught are both found in the list I linked to above.

And a quirky fun one was created here for the DC Accessibility Game Contest: Zombies Ate My Peoples. It's a switch game, which means you control the entire game by pressing just one button.

Living Room / Webmail spam.

Am I the only the only one who sees the humor in this? (image has been blurred in some places to protect the innocent)

Hotmail's SPAM Protection.png

Aside from the humorous oxymoron this image provides, can anyone offer explanation on how this would work?

It's an e-mail from a friend, but it's obviously spam. Normally I'd think she just got a virus but how would a virus get access to her webmail account? Maybe a trojan/keylogger? Maybe her password was compromised?

I've actually received spam from two friends recently (in the past couple months) who use Hotmail accounts. I haven't been paying attention to the Weekly Tech News that Ehtyar normally puts out, has the recent Hotmail account compromises been in the news lately?

Make sure you're pushing the headphones/speaker cord all the way in. Every now and then when I plug in my speakers/headphones it sounds muffled or only comes out of one speaker, and I eventually realize that I didn't plug it in all the way.

Living Room / Re: People are really (really, really) stupid
« Last post by Deozaan on February 21, 2010, 01:21 AM »
I dont think this is stupidity - it's ignorance - these are mostly people who have never learned (in the sense of being taught, but maybe in every sense?!) about using a computer. Have you ever tried to teach beginners - they have an icon the desktop - that's the INTERNET, and god help them (and you) if it moves for any reason. They have no concept of what it is they're using or how it works. Search vs. URL's huh???  that's a more advanced science.

I completely agree with the above.

As I said before, what shocked and saddened me wasn't necessarily that people were using this method to find their sites - I get that it's basic ignorance, or just what they've found easiest/most intuitive to do. It was the fact that once they got to the site that looked totally different than Facebook and had none of the Facebook content and had an obvious article written *about* Facebook, they didn't stop to think maybe they got the wrong site, they just assumed someone had "broken their Facebooks!!1!1" and then proceeded to make incredibly retarded comments about it. *That* is stupid. Yes, I stand by that. Did it not even cross these people's minds that it could be another site? They've been to other sites on the Internet besides Facebook, right? Or at the least they know other sites *exist*... so, they're idiots.  :P

And I also pretty much agree with that as well.

I think a huge part of the security problems on the Internet stem from the fact that people just seem to have their brains turned off when online. Imagine if you were walking down the street to your favorite coffee shop, you come to where it should be and step inside, yet it's totally different, there is no menu, it's filled with shoes, and the staff is different. Do you A: walk up to the counter and start yelling at them about getting you coffee or B: walk back outside and see if you stepped into the wrong door and realize that it's one door down? I'd like to think most people, even the idiots in that comment thread, would opt for B. That being the case, why the hell didn't they apply the same common sense to their online navigation? Yeesh!

And finally, with that as well.

It reminds me of my 5 year old niece, who when she can't find her shoes/sippy cup/whatever insists she can't find it but won't even try looking for it. You can tell her exactly where to look for it ("I saw it in that room right there." *pointing*) but still she won't look.

Many people who otherwise seem quite intelligent do that very thing with computers. "Argh! I don't know where it is! I'm helpless to look for the answer myself! I'll ask someone who knows these things." Then they watch you look around and explore on their machine right in front of them and yet next time they need help they still don't think to look in the menu or whatever you did.

DcUpdater / Re: LATEST VERSION INFO THREAD - DcUpdater - 1.26.01 - Jan 6, 2010
« Last post by Deozaan on February 16, 2010, 11:24 PM »
I would recommend locking this thread (and other LATEST VERSION INFO THREADS) so that only you can post in it, mouser, to announce the latest updates on the software.

If people need troubleshooting help, they should start a new topic.

I'm subscribed to this thread to be notified of updates, and while I'm all for helping people out who are experiencing trouble with the software, posts to this thread really should be limited only to updates.

Yes, I realize I'm contradicting myself by posting here, but I thought having this in context here would help exemplify why I recommend locking it.

I just found this article about Cernegie Mellon students who have programmed D&D on Microsoft's Surface:

I just returned from the Microsoft campus (well, I stopped for a panini), where students from Carnegie Mellon University are showing off their awesome project, a version of D&D that runs on the Surface. Now, before you start rolling your eyes, just recognize that this isn’t just a holy grail for tabletop gaming nerds. I mean, it’s that too, but really it’s a proof of concept that shows how fun and intuitive something like this can be, and how accessible a team can make it. I honestly think that if they had these things scattered around like Golden Tee cabinets, they’d get a huge following.
DDsurface7-620x413.jpg

Even though D&D isn't exactly a board game, I figured it was relevant to this topic.

(cool. is this the first embedded youtube video on DC? every other youtube clip was just a link.)

Nope. The screencasts for NANY 2010 were all embedded. That's how I learned how to do it. I just looked at the source of my NANY entry.

EDIT: Added image and quote.
EDIT 2: Added links back into quoted section.

General Software Discussion / Re: Must-have Windows Programs
« Last post by Deozaan on February 11, 2010, 01:17 AM »
The first things I install when doing a fresh install of Windows generally are (in no particular order):

  • Firefox (though I've been using Chrome predominantly as of late). And the following extensions:
  • Google Chrome (which has become my primary browser)
  • DropBox - Data synchronization/backup/sharing
  • Steam (and all the games from my Steam account)
  • 7-Zip - For handling all those various compressed file formats
  • FileZilla - FTP Client/Server (I use only the client)
  • Picasa - Photo management and web albums
  • Acrobat Reader
  • Flash
  • Google Talk - The best IM client, IMO
  • AVG Free - Free Anti-Virus software
  • ImgBurn - The Ultimate Image Burner
  • Google Earth - It's like Google Maps, but more interactive and cooler
  • Evernote - Notes, lists, photos, ideas, drawings, etc. in the cloud
  • Java (Runtime Engine)

All of the above is Freeware (or has free versions for personal use), and a few of them are open source.

Basically this: http://ninite.com/in...2817c4b91590d84aa6b9 WARNING: Link leads to a download of a small installer for all of the above (minus the Firefox extensions).

Other things that usually get put on the machine shortly thereafter (again, in no particular order):

As before, most of these are freeware, donationware, open source, or have free versions for personal use, with the obvious exceptions of the games, game engine (and IDE), and Office 2007.

I have all of these currently installed on a Windows 7 (64-bit) machine.

In other news, I think Buzz broke my Gmail.

My Compose New Message, Inbox, All Mail, Sent Mail, Drafts, Starred Mail, etc., and all my labels are missing. They've been replaced by a More dropdown link that doesn't do (or show) anything when clicked.

it's part of the 'midweek madness' special so the offer is valid until Thursday only. i remember trying the demo when it came out but not sure what to make of it.

Of course! After you point this out the Steam home page updates to show a big ad on the front page about it. (c:

I tried the demo and it seemed fun enough for $5. I can honestly say I enjoyed the Trine demo more than I've enjoyed the full version of Torchlight.

Living Room / Re: Buzzzzzzzzinggggg - Google Buzz - Gmail with facebook features

I don't think Google Buzz is just Gmail with Facebook features.

Did you know that buzzes appear on Google Maps with your precise location via GPS? I'm not talking just a dot on the map, I mean the street address, as well as your name. It's probably not accurate everywhere, but it correctly displays the address I'm at right now on my phone.

So now my Google Map (on my Android phone) is full of little Buzzes like "Just at work" written by Jake Tucker 8 hours ago (with address displayed) or from Matt Miller: "Just chilling in the car... Going to the dump on a feild [sic] trip." Once again the street address is listed.

Just to make it clear, I don't know any of the people these Buzzes are showing up for. But they all contain a profile picture, real name, street address, and of course the "tweet" containing useless information nobody cares about.

Kind of scary from a privacy perspective. I can just imagine it now:
