General Review Discussion / Re: Vote for what Review to do Next
« Last post by cyberdiva on July 10, 2010, 09:56 PM »
joel2007, check Gizmo's Best Free Program Un-installer review where Revo Uninstaller comes out top.
Yes, but joel2007 asked about Revo Uninstaller Pro, the commercial version of Revo Uninstaller.  If I recall correctly, Gizmo's review deals only with the free version (Revo Uninstaller), not the commercial (Pro) version.

Thanks very much, skwire.  I've now added it to my RSS feed.

Agreed.  They've been in my RSS list for years.
Do they have an RSS feed?  I didn't see any sign of one.

I agree.  $14.99 for a 2-computer license is an amazing price for an amazing program!

On the other hand, the SoftMaker product is a strong contender
I was about to ask about SoftMaker2010, which I've been thinking of getting.  The Neat Net Tricks software review panel had lots of good things to say about it in a review last month: http://tinyurl.com/252evty.  I'm glad to hear that you like it.  Is there a downside to choosing it over MS Office?
681
No, I'm not suggesting it works any differently from what you say. Specifically, that .htm extensions, when associated with another program that is not a browser (e.g. a text editor) means that *all* .htm files will *always* open with that program. That is presumably what you want when you associate a file type though. I don't see a way you can have e.g. .htm associated with 2 apps at once. It's URL shortcuts that I never wanted to associate with any other program, and which I think are perhaps dangerous to reassociate.
Thanks for your response.  I confess that when I set .htm to open with UltraEdit, it was because I thought the only file that would be afffected would be the one I use for my browser's homepage, since normally I use .html rather than .htm for webfiles that I make.  But of course I was overlooking a lot, and I finally had to change the file association for .htm back to opening with my browser.  I should add that I finally did solve the problem of opening just the one .htm file in UltraEdit by creating a small script in ActiveWords.  I now type the activeword I've assigned to this task, and the file opens in UltraEdit.

I've had .htm, .html, etc. associated with text editors quite often, over many iterations of Windows, and it's never caused problems with the browser or OS in general. There's a difference between a *file* of type and a URL shortcut. Maybe the issue is you're trying to associate URL shortcuts with a non-browser? I know you can associate them with non-MS browsers just fine though...
Perhaps I've misunderstood what you said, but my experience with file associations has been quite different.  I have one .htm file that I use as my browser's homepage, but I also want to be able to edit it easily in my text editor.  Though obviously I can go to it in my file manager, right click, select Open with, and choose UltraEdit (my text editor), I'd rather be able simply to click on it and have it open in UltraEdit.  However, when I set the file associations so that .htm files would open in UltraEdit, that definitely screwed things up, since from then on, clicking on any .htm file opened it in UltraEdit, NOT in my Firefox browser.   It wouldn't open in my browser.  Are you saying that you have had a different experience?  I should add that I'm basing my experience on WinXP Pro 32-bit.

I might just point out that the above poster, liuxin4335, has just joined the forum and has posted four messages, all promoting Compare++.  I don't know whether this person has a connection to the software, but he has gone to the trouble of finding some old threads just to push this app.

So for half a year I have been using the free REVO only. For some reason Revo will always stop and wait for the user to click 'next' - which I really think is needless and a total waste of time - so I also tried the Revo_Pro version. But what is it with the Pro version? It is a like a completely different program! Tedious and tiring, I think.
I too have been using the free version of Revo for quite a while.  Can you say briefly what's so different about the Pro version?

Many thanks.

When you hit the unsubscribe link in their email you will be taken to their "Service Letter Management" page where you can make changes to your subscriptions including the frequency of the emails.
Interesting.  This is a rather bizarre way to do things.  I may nonetheless give it a try.  Thanks!

Ashampoo software are competent apps, but is it really worth the email harassment they put you through?

sorry, I never understood this complaint. Click "unsubsribe". End of story.
The problem is that I would like to know about new versions of the software, and perhaps even be made aware of other software the company sells, but not every few days!     I agree with Innuendo that their email diarrhea is extremely annoying, and it gave me a very negative impression of the company.  It led me to assume that Ashampoo's products were garbage until I was desperate enough to try the copy of Burning Studio 9 that was sitting on my computer.  I was really surprised to find out how well it works.

I can't remember how I got a copy of Ashampoo Burning Studio 9, but the continual stream of messages urging me to upgrade, or try another of their programs, really turned me off.  I dismissed Ashampoo as just junk--until recently, when I found myself wanting to make a number of very straightforward audio CDs.  To my surprise and frustration, all the other programs I had, including the commercial program CopytoDVD and the freeware BurnAware Free and CDBurnerXP, failed far more often than they succeeded, leaving me with lots of useless coasters.  In desperation, I tried the copy of Ashampoo Burning Studio 9 that had been sitting idly on my computer.  It succeeded--repeatedly.  I still hate all the email pitches, but I now feel willing to put up with them.

Does anyone have any idea how Puran Defrag (the free version) compares with Perfect Disk?  I've got a copy of PerfectSpeed 10, which includes the defrag technology of Perfect Disk 10.  I've been happy with it, but I'm curious about Puran.

General Software Discussion / Re: On-Line Dictionaries

I know the world is full of fantastic dictionaries etcetera, but it is so easy (and common) for me to merely Ctrl+RightClick and see the result at once in Babylon, that I almost never will search another place.
Curt, I almost started my message (right above yours) by saying that the first place I generally turn for translating to/from English is Babylon.  I didn't say that because 1) I interpreted the original message as asking about online resources, and 2) when I want to get an even better sense of which word to use and why, I'll turn to WordReference.com.  It covers many words and expressions that Babylon omits, and it often offers more nuanced information about usage.  But I agree that Babylon is terrific.

The dictionaries I use most often are those that translate from various languages into English and vice versa.  And far and away, the best online (or offline) set of dictionaries I know for this are those offered for free at WordReference.com.  The site offers dictionaries in a number of different languages, but I tend to use those for Spanish most often.  What I love about the WordReference dictionaries is that at the end of each entry, they include links to discussions of that word or phrase in the WordReference.com forums.  You thus get a much more nuanced idea of what the word means, how it's used, where it's used or not used, etc. etc.  It's an amazing resource!

I use Chameleon Startup Manager. It stops all programs from setting themselves up to start with Windows automatically, and asks me if I want it to be in the startup config. Or I can configure it to just deny without asking me also. There are some other apps that similarly control what goes into startup config.
Yes, I use WinPatrol Plus for the same purpose, and it blocks Linkman each time.  But I don't think any program should insert itself into the startup menu without first asking, except perhaps for some programs vital to system functioning.
692
Should already be working: (see attachment in previous post)
This is only accessible AFTER one has installed the program.  That's not what I'm referring to.  I would like to be asked at installation whether I want the program to start at startup.

I see from Outertech's message (following yours) that this may be an installer problem that they'll look into.  Thanks VERY much, Outertech!!

We have Build 50 with further improvements....
-Outertech Support (May 11, 2010, 02:21 AM)
One improvement I keep hoping to see (but probably haven't bothered to ask for) is an option of whether or not Linkman launches at startup.  I try to include in my startup menu only those apps I know I'm going to need right away.  Everything else gets added when I need it.  Every time I install a new version of Linkman, WinPatrol alerts me that Linkman has inserted itself into the startup menu, and each time I respond that no, it is NOT OK.  Since Linkman includes options for things like desktop icons, why not add an option to start at startup?  It's no big deal, but Linkman is one of my very favorite apps, and I'd like it to be perfect  :) .

You could try working through the suggestions in this FAQ - http://resource.dopu...viewtopic.php?t=6285
Thanks very much for the link.  Actually, the past few days, DOpus suddenly seems to be behaving itself.  Perhaps it knew that I was complaining about its sluggishness?  Anyway, if it goes back to its previous bad habits, I'll start going through the list of suggestions.

@ cyberdiva & CWuestefeld,
have you tried the Dopus forum to see what the problem is with reading the respective folders ?
I get the impression they are fairly responsive with bugs and that sounds like a bug to me...
I would swear that I did, several years ago.  I don't recall whether it was for version 8 or 9.  I don't recall getting any genuinely helpful responses.  But the weirdest thing is that I tried earlier today to locate the posting I'd sent and the responses, and I came up empty.  Geez, I dunno...sometimes I don't remember doing something that it turns out I did, but I don't tend to remember doing something that I didn't!   I even looked in the long-defunct Yahoo Groups group for DOpus, but I came up empty there too.  So I guess I should amend my response to say that several years ago, I dreamt that I asked about the slow lister behavior in the DOpus forum, but my dream didn't produce any really useful responses.  :)

Hi, ha14, I'm glad to hear that the Firefox cookies problem has been fixed.  Thanks for letting me know.

Reading again I should have worded my post slightly differently. As you say in caps, 'DID' because whatever the edition type, both home and professional users know McAfee can no longer be considered a reliable solution. Any business worth its salt will never deploy a new version without having trialled it in a sandbox box environment for at least a month first.
I agree that companies should be more careful than McAfee apparently was this time, but I'm not sure how your statement above relates to the McAfee debacle in question.  McAfee wasn't putting out a new version of the software but simply new definitions, something they do every day.  Yes, they screwed up big time, but it had nothing to do with a new version of the software.  And, as Jim has already pointed out, your statement about "mickey mouse personal 'anti-virus' software" also seems off target.

General Software Discussion / Re: Clipboard Managing-Which one?
« Last post by cyberdiva on May 06, 2010, 05:22 PM »
Mostly, I only want to retain clipboard history for a while, and have it deleted on FIFO basis.
This is true for me most of the time, and ClipMate makes this very easy.   But even though most of my use of ClipMate is pretty routine and I don't have many clip collections, I'm glad I can store some Spanish phrases in a separate collection that is easy to access but separate from the rest of my clips.  Also, I value very highly ClipMate's "powerpaste" feature; this permits me to take a bunch of clips and paste them into a document in sequence just by hitting CTL-V.  While ClipMate has many features I don't use, I don't feel that they weigh down the program.  I find it on the whole very responsive and easy to use, while offering me features that I'd miss in a more minimalist program.

Thanks very much, Tuxman, for your prompt and helpful reply.  Alas, I really love the ability to put my cursor over a graphics file and see what it is without having to open it.  As I say, that was probably the feature that sold me on DO when I first tried it several years ago, and I wouldn't want to give it up.  I agree that DO is expensive, but at least it's not one of these programs that asks you to pay for a new version every year.  I think thus far I've had to pay for an upgrade only once.  Still, there's no question that I'd prefer to spend less.  But would I be willing to give up the features I value in DO?  Probably not.  Sigh.  :-\
