Hi Folks,

Dan, does the VueMinder calendar have a clock-turner-backer to reinvigorate the lifetime lifeline of 4.0 ?

Maybe a real quiet DonationCoder alternate reality ?

We can keep the discussion quiet as a mouser.  (Realizing that you have a rather sound and helpful
potential pool of users in the pond.)  Or some type of longevity special (2 yr. +).  (Notice my comment
above about new releases, if that pattern continues ... it could discomfit in the new reality.)

Just asking .. :)

Shalom,

General Software Discussion / Re: bookTome the book organiser
« Last post by Steven Avery on July 21, 2009, 08:09 AM »
Hi Folks,

Calibre Manages Your E-Book Collection
http://lifehacker.co...-collection#comments

Lifehacker, and numerous comments.  Looks like it is worth a good try, note that a few people apparently messed up their collection structure, because they did not point Calibre to an empty folder as output when reading their disk.

From reading up, now I am ready to consider BookTome (apparently more native for home collection), Calibre, Zotero and Jabref (reference manager).  (Seeing JabRef thread, add Mendeley and note Aigaion, server-based and OOoBib, Open Office based) Especially if I get back to my project that has a couple of hundred books involved.  Is BookTome helpful in that mix ?  Possibly, note that it is freeware but not open source, which might be a concern in using it for a major home library project.

Thats the major freeware installed software stuff, online tools like LibraryThing, GoodReads, Anobii, Worldcat, Abacci all have their own dynamic, a bit different.

Good timing, I'm hoping to get back into this world shortly.

Hi Folks,

Thanks, John for the info on integrating Rainlendar, Lightning and Google Calender and Remember the Milk.  I may work with some of those, especially since I picked up Rainlendar on the Bits special.

John, VueSoft is relatively new, only about a year, the new few months will tell a lot, if they begin putting in the features we are talking about, saved categories for sure and better integration with at least one web tool I will be ready to give it an extensive try. While now it is more play. Kirby is the other one I am really checking.

Questions for Dan.

"VueMinder Calendar is free to try and fully functional for up to 30 days. After 30 days, it will no longer run, but any events or reminders that you defined during the trial period will be waiting for you to view after you've purchased a license."

Really you should simply prevent new entries.  I hesitate to put in real data if it will become totally invisible after the trial.  Too much pressure.  I want to be able to at least screen view or print what I had without counting days or having to request a special extension.  Nobody is going to continue to *use* a calendar long on stale entries, so you will not lose anything.

"A single-user license can be used by a single user on up to 5 computers ...."
- Excellent (separate users on one puter - separate licenses though)

Dan, you have gone to release 4 from release 1 in about a year.  Has this required a paid upgrade ?  What is your policy.  I would hope that with a new software you would give something like 2-years (at least 1-year or 18 months) of free upgrades.  Have the release 1 folks been hit with 3 upgrades ?  You clearly go version to version much quicker than most softwares.

As for the Outlook PIM replacement ..steeladept .. hmmm .. very tuff, especially with your list of requirements.  Outlook is so fragile and strange, a lot of the folks at work use it (some use Outlook Express, I have Thunderbird loaded at work with Eudora at home being my main email.).  For PIM functionality Outlook is clearly kewl, but having one kitchen sink data file with email attachments and calendar and this and that is an architectural train-wreck. Have you looked at Lightning or Sunbird (with or without Thunderbird) and various add-ons ?  It is the most likely to have a lot of integration resources with a cadre of open source developers doing this and that. A lot of people like Essential PIM as an Outlook replacement, but you would probably have to give up most of your integration requirements. How is Chaos32 (formerly the better-named Time & Chaos) these days ?  Might be worth a check.

broken, be not too sad.  Dan is here, maybe he will whisper about future discount plans and maybe consider a DonationCoder connection.  (Although DC would probably like to know his upgrade policy very clearly as well.)

Shalom,
Steven Avery

Greetings, steeladept.

Well, I had not yet included SpaceMonger, it is rather a packed (yet interesting) section.  One reason I allow such a section to get packed is that the tools are not identical, generally each one can have some real advantages.  Also it will lead to the developer's website where there might be other tools and all sorts of interesting info.

ADDED

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows XP Alternative shells
« Last post by Steven Avery on July 19, 2009, 05:33 PM »
Hi Folks,

Neato references.   I am tempted, even though I am sooo used to the taskbar and the always-cumbersome system tray.

Are these relatively "light" for resource use and for testing and, if necessary, uninstalling ?

e.g. when I looked at virtual desktops some of the ones seem to hook a bit low into the OS (Dexpot) while another, Goscreen, apparently was more true to simply use the Windows API.  (I did use GoScreen for awhile, and can give it a thumbs-up, but then moved away from the concept for now.  I'd rather have a spare XP puter with certain types of intensive apps like web-dev or database than load too much on one puter at one time.)

So these on the thread all look like fine products, however I really want to be pretty sure that if I install and test and uninstall that I have little residue on my system.  And that the programs are pretty stable and relatively API-light.

And can you just share a few words about what program you like, and why ?

Shalom,
Steven

Hi Folks,

Thanks for the response, Dan.  I think I sent you an email too.  However we can continue here just as well, and I see you have a webforum with moderate activity.  Important, close to a necessity in the utility easy-use software world.

This is one of the few programs that I have on a 30-day trial that I won't mind if it expires, as I will be thinking of a purchase, especially if you just enhance that one feature and/or we run into the next discount (e.g. a DonationCoder discount would be nice, a suggestion for consideration).

I'll try to work with VueSoft a little, if I need an extension I'll give you a holla, and then I'll give you a bit more feedback.

A good calendar (and alarm) program is a real need, even if it doesn't have the ToDo list as some super-function (the long-term goal).  I'm playing with Rainlendar, Kirby and yours, and will probably settle on two of the three, all have their pluses.

It is true that esthetics on a calendar is important (where you really lead the pack).  Boy, is the calendar on my Samsung cell phone ugly !  And hard to work with !

More laters.

MISCELLANEOUS AND NOTES-DISCUSSION
====================================================

This post is left available for any packages that we simply have not figured out a category !
And special general notes and discussion.

=================================
DONATIONCODER
=================================

And the DonationCoder software is a bit of a hybrid in terms of this list.  A low-cost commercial license is expected (appreciated, required) on a real corporate-enterprise biz usage, yet the home user and light small business this is optional.  So if we work in a medium-larger company, we can install a few programs where we work for our use, and then if it expands to new usage by others, request the site or multi-license.

Mouser gave the explanation on this page.
https://www.donation...x.php?topic=18813.25

Though we don't make too big a deal about it, the official DonationCoder policy about commercial business uses is described here:
https://www.donation...r.com/Help/entry/23/

It basically says:
"Our software is free/donationware for personal use.  If you are running your own small home business, we consider that the same thing (as fellow voyagers in the world of small home businesses we know how hard it can be).

But if you are running a real business with more than one or two non-family employees, we do expect you to purchase a Site/Business License for the program you will be using.

Note: If you are simply an individual using the program at work, it doesn't matter if you are a member of a large business -- you do not need a formal commercial license (unless the program specifically says a commercial license is required for all profit making use).  Commercial Licenses are normally intended for the situation where many people at your business all use the program."

In other words, if you are a larger company that wants to install the software on many pcs, you should get a commercial license.  Otherwise, no worries.

Hi Folks,

Arsclip and RDilly added from JoeJoe.

Arsclip looks like a very competent additional clipboard extender, with source code to boot.  RDilly is quite similar to ERUNT, whichever came first, and I am not sure if it has any advantages. However the reputation is strong and source is included.  StartRight, however, looks a bit problematic for the list.

Did some rearranging, added a few new posts, divided the utility disk programs into their own section, also startup and shutdown and process in its own section, lots of smaller stuff, plan more breakout of utility, etc.  .. Made it to pg 2 !

ClipX also added to clipboard section.

Hi Folks,

Righteo.  The human heuristics is far more important than techie heuristics, which is an ongoing sludge-fest of Malware vs. the Organized Bureaucratic Defenders.

Even on a defense level, the whole "anti-virus" thing is now less important than HIPS .. "do I really give access to my registry or disk to that thingamajig". It has a place, and to a large extent is still helpful, but with great caution and a bit of whimsy.  That is one reason Avira made a splash recently, low footprint, so it was less likely to get in the way.  However, it seems every single anti-virus program is gonna have a fairly substantial false positive problem today. Since they are looking at heuristics, and that always struggles against :

a) new masking attempts by the bad guys
b) real programs that do techie stuff, thus it looks like they may be the malware.
c) bureaucratic shuffling and indecision in the anti-virus companies

Granted, this is all another generic comment.  Game sites and little-known oddball utilities from Chinese-Mongolian anonymous authors (you may substitute other countries there) will always be problematic. If I used stuff like that, even I might consider a sandbox or virtual machine, as discomfiting as it seems.  Probably the only way to be close to 100% safe, once a file is under suspicion, is a sandbox-style route.  Generally I only want software from a visible company where there is public communication with the writers or at least with the company marketing or sharing. Remember I am the one who is gonna tell the firewall/HIPS that they are "trusted" .. so I want there to be a basis for that trust.

Hi Folks,

Kirby Alarm Pro
http://www.bitsdujou...are/kirby-alarm-pro/

Never used this, and .. other software that overlaps is in use (System Scheduler, Rainlendar) and the Vue Calendar thing also sounded great ..

however a number of users seem to wax poetic.

And he has got a rather excellent-looking forum.

Kirby Software Forum - Kirby Alarm

So is this one of those "get it for $10 and shake it out later .. can't miss" types of softwares ?

Hi Folks,

If still concerned, and you would like to use the software, you could ask the developers to put this as an addendum on their website and/or the actual EULA.  That should be sufficient.

(Personally I would be unconcerned, since I think this issue comes up a lot in areas like Creative Commons license as well, and it appears clear to me what is the intent.  However a nice official note is always nice.)

Shalom,
Steven
