General Software Discussion / Re: Must-have apps in the System tray?
« Last post by dantheman on April 22, 2007, 10:25 AM »
...download here (look below the post):
Here you go :)

"trimall.exe" automatically trims all processes, has no GUI or status indication or whatever (thus the small size). It still won't trim system processes, and on a multiuser system it will probably only trim other people's processes if you have an administrative user account.

[ Invalid Attachment ] trimws.zip = a direct link

Thanks Curt!

I've downloaded it, unzipped it into it's own folded but clicking on trimall or trimws doesn't make anything happen.

f0dder and mouser:

trimws / trimall must be given a page if its own, at DC!

This little wonder-program shouldn't die un-noticed.

-

Only; I don't yet understand how to use trimws, and maybe I'm not the only one? Can I encourage f0dder to create some kind of a manual for beginners, please, to be placed on the program's new page?

Hey guys, i'm missing out on something here.
What's the name of this incredible program?
Where can i download it?

Josh,

Opera is perhaps the fastest but i think what you've said points to something i've come to experience with over the years. It seems to come into conflict with other programs. I have an old version of Corel WordPerfect (8) and it seems to have this problem too.

BTW, CPU on latest Opera jumped to 100% just a minute ago.
I had a friend that switched to IE7 because his opera would jump to 100% every few minutes. Never understoo what it was, though. (i never got that, except when loading a giant image or flash..)

Probably just a quirk. Especially that i'm using the latest beta.
Testing the latest SlimBrowser alpha right now. It has the Roboform plugin.

Is this turning into a Firefox thread?

When i'm signed in, it tells me that i have to make some changes to my "user preferences" in order to access the Sandbox.
This is new to me. What praytell are these "user preferences"?

Security

In the Security preferences you can manage your security certificates and set up which security protocols to use. Opera can also warn you about potentially unsafe situations.
Master Password

To prevent other people from using your certificates, you can set a master password with strong 168-bit triple DES encryption.

You will then be asked to enter your master password when you want to use your certificates.
Select a password that is impossible to guess and keep it secret
Set Opera to ask for the master password every time needed if other people have access to your computer or user account

You can also use the master password to protect your e-mail, news, and Wand passwords.
http://help.opera.co....02/en/security.html

Well there you go!
No more need for Roboform then right?

I like opera, it is by far the fastest browser, but I simply cannot use it until I can have roboform back incorporated into my configuration. I understand opera's need for "security", but at least give the user a choice. Locking us down to what the dev's feel is pertinent to a browser is like ford telling you that you have to settle for a stock engine or stock radio when much better alternatives exist.

I was with you for the longest time on this topic, but now that I have used Opera exclusively for a couple years I find that Wand meets my needs.  The only thing I really miss is the ability to edit (or even see!) my passwords in the Wand.  Otherwise, it has completely replaced Roboform for me.

I love Opera!

I've been a die hard fan of Firefox over the years but did purchase Opera at the time to encourage the browser. So, i have spinned Opera (and others) around over the years but still go back to Firefox.

Perhaps with these shortcut tips you will convince me yet!  Ha!

Wand feature is nice but you can't p.w. protect it.
Perhaps Opera will want to pick up on AVANT and Maxthon Beta version who now offer online i.d. and p.w. protection for your data. I was kind of hoping to see this rather than this Speed dial bit that really doesn't do anything noticeable for me on my DSL connection.

dantheman: roboform is a toolbar which incorporates into 99% of browsers minus WebTV, Compuserve, Old netscapes and Opera. Roboform itself is a standalone program for remembering logins but its primary purpose is to fill web forms, something which requires an API or a way to hook into the browser. Roboform is not the only application which cannot tie into opera, no application can. Google's and Yahoo's toolbars cannot tie into opera, various 3rd party applications cannot. Its not a matter of roboform not supporting opera, its a matter of opera not giving other applications a way to support opera.

Perhaps a kind soul will make a widget?  Is that possible?

Fastest where it really matters, in browsing speed (page rendering, back/forward). But again, that is subjective. On my system, opera runs faster when it comes to rendering pages, browser response, control response, and its overall lighter as well. But like I said, this is subjective. I am not out to start a war on which browser is better. On every system I've used, opera responds and handles better than other browsers. Please, dont turn this into a "Which browser is better" thread. I merely stated my opinion and am not intending on defending my position as I feel it has been done numerous times in the past on various other forums.

Goccha!

People will use what they prefer, and I know that I would prefer to use opera, however, I cant because roboform is not supported which was the main point of my post. Not to start another browser war.

Why not use the Roboform standalone application? This way you can use it for other browsers as well right?

I like opera, it is by far the fastest browser...

"Fastest" is a big word!
Fastest to start up ?  (i find AVANT and Slimbrowser to be the best there so far) ;
Fastest at page rendering ? (don't notice much difference with regards to AVANT, Slimbrowser and Firefox).
Fastest at going backward/forward (equal to AVANT and Slimbrowser IMHO).

ProcessTamer / Can Process Tamer tame Firefox ?
« Last post by dantheman on March 15, 2007, 06:57 PM »
Hi,

Firefox is known to have ups and downs with regards to it's use of system ressources.
Extensions are likely the major culprits.

Have Firefoxers found a way to configure Process Tamer to tame it somehow?

Fasterfox gives lets you tinker with the amount of cache Firefox uses.

iphigenie,

i can relate to your drama.
Actually, i'm using Barca 2.1.0.350 at the present time as a kind of backup as i tend to go back to Thunderbird for the IMAP support and the good "open source feeling" that it gives me.
This Barca version was a great improvement over all previous versions, especially with regards to IMAP and search capabilities.  The next version i am told will be coming out of the closet very soon.
I also love the backup/restore feature which has been flawless (especially with regards to filtering issues).
Mulberry imo is very quick but has a strong learning curve.
I'm keeping my eyes open on the next Eudora which has gone into the Open Source arena. What will the next version be like?  A combo TBird/Dora?

-p.s. i forgot to mention that i have about 4,000 messages stocked up in Barca

-also, seeing that we are in a "donationware" type forum, i would keep an eye open and also encourage PopPeeper.  A very small mail checker that checks practically any type of email account.  Search feature has yet to be implemented but i'm sure that if people here would post and encourage the programmer, things could go faster.

All email programs have their plusses and minusses.

Thunderbird
Pro: hightlighting feature.
Con: slow to find (compared to the other two here below) ;
you must search each email folder separately and again perform searches by selecting different options one by one.

Opera browser email client.
Pro: excellent search speed.
Con: no highlighting feature.

Poco or Barca
Pro: excellent search speed for all accounts in one single request.
Con: no hightlighting.

Of course, other things help to make a user opt for such and such an email client.  Alot depends on personal tastes.

I don't see why Thunderbird couldn't handle the load.
A quick search brought this up for importing from OE at: http://kb.mozillazin...from_Outlook_Express

My personal concern would be the Thunderbird "search" capabilities.
Is it as good as OE's? I haven't worked with OE in years!
Barca or recent Poco have a relatively good support of IMAP accounts (i did say "relatively") but their search feature IMO is quite simply unparalleled.

To me, the later could be a determining factor in a Museum context for quick access to information on large message boxes.   :)

I wish FARR could search WordPerfect, Word and .pdf files like CopernicDesktopSearch (the later uses too much ressources imo). Wishful thinking?

Hey!

In my hunt for anti-spam, I've decided to give ThunderBird a try at the museum I help out. Before I do so, I'd like to know if any of you have experiences with having a lot of mails in it? Currently, one of the people there has Outlook Express mailboxes of a gig or more, and I wonder if ThunderBird can import that, work with it, and still be reasonably fast?

If you have a zillion messages i would first set the options to not download any over 250ks at first then when i have some spare time i would download all completely.

Use MozBackup http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com to backup all your messages, contacts etc. afterwards.

If your email service has an archiving feature, i would use that to set aside messages of lesser importance or relevance.  Make sense?

As a Canadian citizen, i am evidently unable to try it out.

OpenBook is an excellent addon that gives you more options when adding bookmarks:
http://www.chuonthis...ensions/openbook.php

When you make an entry to "keyword" box option when adding bookmarks, you can use that entry to access the bookmarked page when you type it into the url box.

Welll, my spelll cheeck duzzint wurk tooo goodd! Heeyuck!!!

But that's because I didn't notice anything about downloading a dictionary when upgrading to FF 2.0.

Anyway, here's a tip. You don't need that search box on the FF toolbar...any site that you can search from, such as Google for example, you can right click in the search box and select "Add a keyword for this search". I use "G" for Google. If I want to search for purple socks, I just type "g purple socks" in the url bar.

Now you can remove that search box and put buttons there or something if you want.

Neat!  But what if you want to use other search engines like Wikipedia in french or other languages?

Here are some of the reasons i've come to appreciate Diigo http://www.diigo.com/ more than others:

1. Firefox toolbar which lets me instantly know if comments have been posted and if the site i'm visiting is already in my collection.
2. On the other hand, i also use Foxcloud to back-up my bookmarkshttp://www.foxcloud.com/wiki/Main_Page, this way i continue to use Firefox bookmark search feature for quickest results (no matter which bookmarking service).
3. Diigo also has an excellent forum!

 :)

They give me Outlook at work which is used enterprise wide.

At home it's nice to get away from such things, but my wife runs an awsome wall calendar with a neat manual birthday update routine that runs at the start of each year!!

Mom does much the same.
So much more practical i would say.

For Outlook users, DeskTask is a nice freeware for quick access to the program without having to open it.  Airset is just excellent for Calendar and Contacts sync (prefer it to Plaxo as it also syncs your Notes and Tasks which Airset does not).

Have tried a variety of things like Google's Calendar, Rainlendar, EssentialPIM, WinPIM and other online services but in the end... perhaps a mom style calendar would be the best!

Ooops!  I did forget to mention Barca which has a nice Calendar with easy 1,2,3 back-up/restore process and great search capabilities.  Except for the exporting feature of .ics file, it fails to sync with anything online.

You are quite welcome Mike!

Firefox can take a bit of learning but once you get to know it, you wonder how you can do without it.
Not all things in Fx are that hard though.  I find the shortcuts to the most user friendly.

Extensions can be difficult issued at times.  Be sure not to load too many at a time (as i did) so you can identify which one is giving you problems.

All the best!
