Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Vopt 9 defragger free

Anything graphical will tend to slow down the process activity it's depicting ... But yeah, I totally get where you're coming from. :D

Yes, I tend to feel a bit guilty about watching the graphics - I know it probably slows the processing down, and I know I could be doing something more useful, but - but - but - the patterns! ...

Hmm, if I could only come up with a front loader washing machine that cleaned my clothes, removed viruses from and defragged my HD, and showed the Patriots NFL games in HD, I could watch it all day.  Provided a comfortable recliner, cold Pellegrino, and Doritos and dip were at the ready.

AData s102 16GB USB 3.0 has a promo code for a $3 discount(if you are willing to accept the promo emails) good until 8/15/2016.

If you use the $.99 shipping option this brings the cost under $7.  I ordered it just now.  This will be my 6th AData s102 USB 3.0.  So far none have let me down.  They seem to be in a pretty good price/performance niche.

Note that if you click the Blue color option the promo disappears.  So buy the gray one.  :)

Found Deals and Discounts / Vopt 9 defragger free

Vopt 9 defrag for free.

Once installed copy the reg file text to a file named Vopt9reg.txt and place it in the same folder as vopt.exe.

Edit:  I tried this program a few years back.  Maybe I didn't keep it because it wasn't free.  But I ran it on my C: partition.  At first I got a bit paranoid when it showed it was going to close over 18,000 gaps on my partition.  But that only took about 25 minutes.  After it completed I did the analyze with Auslogics Pro.  It showed C: as being only .05 percent fragmented.  For those who like "quick" defraggers it seems positioned between Auslogics and MyDefrag.  They say the first defrag with Vopt takes the longest.  Supposedly if you use it multiple times per week there are fewer gaps to close.

One note, if you use Restore Points you may want to opt for the VSS compatible mode.  Conversely if you use a snapshot utility such as RollbackRX you should uninstall that utility before doing any defrag.

My impression after initial use is favorable.  A nice free tool. One nitpick the UI has a rather tiny font if you are over 40 years of age.  But otherwise the display shows what it going on as it moves the disk clusters around.

Glad you got it working.

I would experiment with FileGetShortcut function to get the exe file path from the Target line in the shortcut and load the icon from the exe file directly.

Thanks for reviving T-Clock.
I can confirm it is working fine on Windows 10 64-bit Anniversary Update.

Is there an atomic clock feature where I can right click to update my computer's time via an atomic clock server?

Edit: I found it. A bit hidden, but it's there.  :)

Does it work?  I ask because on Windows 8.0 I have to use a browser protocol to get the time.  It could be the WiFi here blocking it for some reason.  But connecting to atomic time servers just hangs.

@Deozaan For some reason I can't get rid of multiple quotes if I quote your post.  So I will just answer:

Yes. I modified the post on July 22 to reflect as much.  Unfortunately there's no "delete post" button to just remove it.

Anyway, the book The Dark Fields has been renamed to "Limitless" to boost book sales.  Evidently the movie got better box office than expected.  So now I can just use "Limitless" and I'm covered for either thread.  :)

What does the squeaky wheel worker do at the end of her shift?  Does she shut the machine down?  Power it off?  Let it sleep?

I don't use the indexing myself but I wonder if once it loaded up if it would keep its cache overnight if she hibernated the machine instead of shutting down.  Just a wild thought.

I am starting to suspect that Windows Update is a conspiracy between Microsoft and the corporate IT guys to log 30+ hours of overtime per week.  How can you possibly add dozens of modifications per week to an OS without breaking things?  I don't think there is a way.

I would hate to be put in that bind unless I needed an excuse to sleep on a cot at work and never go home.  Maybe they have 4k HD with all the sports channels in a secret rec room or something?

I did get a hit on Microsoft Licensed Reseller but with dynamic page generation I have no idea how old the page really is:

https://partner.micr...a-licensing-reseller

I know I saw something about changes to the program back 4 or 5 years ago.  Probably people were getting wise and college kids may have started selling Window at a big discount by becoming licensed resellers.  There is likely a higher threshold to qualify these days.  But maybe not.  If I think of it I'll mention it to the kid in question next class.  I think the guy who built my system said he just needed a tax number(that you get when you create an LLC) to qualify.

Hi all,

I recently came across this site which gives detailed information about components, with charts and tables making it easy to compare performance and price of certain builds. So the next time you're looking to upgrade your PC or want to build a new one, it may be worthwhile to check out Logical Increments.

http://www.logicalincrements.com/

Not a hardware related question.  But back in 486 days the guy who built my PC included Windows 3.0 shrink wrapped.  He said he was a "licensed reseller" and got the software at less than half the retail price.  I think Microsoft discontinued that program.  But since they have a way of renaming the same old ketchup and putting it in a different bottle I was wondering if you had heard of something similar where people with a business LLC or INC could get Windows wholesale for build installs?

I am just curious because a kid in my Computer Repair class is under the delusion you can build systems and just pre-load Windows from a retail DVD.  I tried to tell him the activations would catch up to him if he just kept on with this method.

Thanks for the link.  When I a get the chance I want to do a computer room with maybe a half dozen builds networked with various OS.

OK, I'll bite ... why?

I should have put a rolling on floor laughing smiley.  But if the solution is too easy we all know it is not allowed on Windows.  :)

I just add the UNC path of the network share I want to index, eg. Everything runs on my computer and indexes a share on my WHS2011 machine, so the index is available even when the server is offline, (it's only on 3 hours a day).

Isn't that cheating?

The only "issue" I have seen is that running it from the command line it seems to want you to put the http:// stuff in.  Most browsers these days if you just type domain.com it brings it up.

Good point. This could certainly be mentioned too.  :)

The author of Browser Select fixed this issue.  There is a new download with the fix incorporated.
I just tried it and it works fine.

I don't have much patience anymore with AddOns that aren't zero configuration.  I installed the chrome version of uMatrix in SlimJet.  The first thing I noticed, just letting it run with default settings, is that I could not delete or even read any emails in outlook.  The check boxes would check but the line item emails would not select.  Right clicking and using Open In New Tab got me another tab with the same page I was on.  Still cannot select an email.

After removal Outlook reverted to its usual annoying behavior.  :)

Reluctant Dad Drafts Hilarious Contract For Kids Who Want Dog

Most likely the first thing the dog will poop on is that contract.  :)

Edit:  But speaking of dog slobber, my brother had a Boston Terrier who was telepathic.  When he wanted to lick your hand he looked up at your face.  If you wanted your hand licked he would do so.  But if you didn't he would put his mouth near your hand and just lick his lips.  Sort of like a "Hollywood Kiss."  :)

Edit2:  The picture below is not Biff, my brother's dog.  Just a reasonable facsimile.  :)

The JavaRa crew now say that there's no longer a need for the software as the Oracle Java installer does a thorough job of removing older versions. On my own systems I have found this to be true.
-cranioscopical (August 01, 2016, 08:35 AM)

+1.  I just updated today and the installer found both the 64 and 32 bit obsolete versions and removed them.

There is a (free) tool called: JavaRA  which is supposed to be able to cleanup Java installations on a Windows PC.

I used it sometime in 2014.  I forget the exact issue but it must not have done any damage since I still have it on.  Worth a try for sure.

So not knowing their criteria, it makes it difficult to see if you need to visit the sites in question.  That's my concern.  Why use an aggregation site if it doesn't aggregate?

I dunno' why that happens.  Same thing today.  It shows a date for BDJ of today with no bits.  But I go to the site and they claim there are free downloads every day.  Oh well, it seems useful to me.  Especially since at times the same program is offered on more than one giveaway site but the license or version may vary.  It would be cool if they specified both.  But it at least gives some overview.

If they charged me for reading it needless to say I would remove the bookmark.  :)

But did you run across a key bypass?

I didn't think about that, good idea.
I'm sure you could bring it up as a suggestions in the issues. The developer is pretty responsive.

Thanks.  I like the program so far.  The only "issue" I have seen is that running it from the command line it seems to want you to put the http:// stuff in.  Most browsers these days if you just type domain.com it brings it up.  But for clicking on a saved link it doesn't matter.

For example, on BDJ, there are 6 entries.  However, Giveaway Radar says No useful Bits today, too bad !

In all that text at the top it says something about the fact that they don't claim to check all the sites all the time.  I have the giveaway sites I follow in a bookmark folder along with Radar.  After I read the Radar page then I go glance at all them them in turn.  I don't do computer games so that side of it I just skip.

This doesn't mention the reason that I quit looking at GAoTD - it wouldn't work on 64-bit Windows.

You mean a particular program or a whole lot of them?  I have only installed maybe a dozen from GOTD so I didn't really notice.  Most that I installed I ended up removing after a day or so.
