The real reason they are using this method is the message carrier will work for peanuts.

And hopefully wont get any arsenic pop-corn: anyone else remember that Don Martin Cartoon (from MAD)? I've searched, but can't find an image  :(

It's been a long time since I heard that name.  Seems I remember buying books "Don Martin Steps Out" and "Don Martin Bounces Back" or something like that when I was a kid.  Did you ever see the "Russian Roulette" one where the last guy in line shoots through the heads of the previous five?  They thought they had a "lock" on that game.  I remember that one for some reason.

I didn't see this before it was edited.  Can you give more info on your impressions of this Epsilon software?  Have you tried the "application clone" thing or just install watching?

Hmmmmmmmm, they should add a "nose pinching" avatar for this subject matter. :)

QuEnc is a modification of ffmpeg or is at least based on it iirc.  I'm going to mess around a bit more with AVStoDVD using the default except for boosting up the bit rate of the audio.  I think I fell into the trap of comparing different runs.  If you have an .avi with a low bit rate and not very long duration, the output bit rate can be very high and fast to process.  So I may be noticing an "easy" encode in HC running at 130 fps and comparing that with a one pass QuEnc from another run only going at 60 fps.

There's always the chance the author of AVStoDVD may be onto something doing it the way he's doing it.  I know max results would be HC 2 pass, but I'm thinking he may be right or at least close on speed vs quality.  Or at least I suspect it enough that I'll do some more trials with default ranges.

One thing cool about QuEnc I used to do was put a bunch of .avi files in a converter that generates an .avs script for me, so that all the bit rates and all that are calculated.  Then I would just modifiy it to have a script for each title, then manually run a copy of QuEnc with each script for as many cores as I had.  I think the only danger is to make sure the intermediate files don't use a common folder.  I would start them going and end up with an .mpg with navpacks for each title.  Then just plunk that into an authoring program like DVDAuthorGui or SVCD2DVD that accepts .mpg with navpacks.

As usual the complication is subs.  Since a lot of what I watch are Asian vids with subs it can limit the choices esp. if I don't have text subs to work with.

I think one could pooh pooh that idea!

edit: hmm, the way this conversation is going the mod may flush this thread instead of deleting.

So the kid is bound to be a stool pigeon?

This reminds me of a cartoon I saw in Playboy.  A flying saucer is coasting just above the tree tops.  The alien and his wife are obviously on vacation.  The husband says to the wife, to her disbelief, "this is a planet where everything they eat turns to sh*t!"  She's utterly horrified!! :)

Hmmmmmm, I think I'm onto something here.  Like, everyone already knew the results of the study/survey but if they let on, then there'd be no free booze for "research."

I believe I actually liked engines better than computers; engines are visceral, tactile, & soulful... while computers are sterile & in-tangent.

Yeah, there was something about diagnosing a problem, like if a car is running rough, by just leaning over the running engine, closing your eyes, and listening. The oscilloscopes and all that are fine.  But if you have experience chances are you know the answer in your subconscious.  You just have to relax and let it out. Plus it's more fun than running 128 tests in a series that you can't do if the engine doesn't run. ;)

sajman, after substituting May beta as you suggested, in both FAVC and AVStoDVD seems like I was getting @160 fps throughput total with 4 instances of HC in FAVC and with AVStoDVD running multi-thread it was about 130 fps.  So that's not too big a hit.  Are there any good measures of DVD quality you can run for free?  I'm thinking even though it's slower, I should run a few through the QuEnc with Trellis quant to see if I can tell a difference.

My guilty secret is I used to run 4 instances of QuEnc 0.72 single pass average quality with no Trellis just to crank stuff out at 63 fps per instance!! :)

But that was before I had divx ultra stand-alone players.  No need to convert so much to DVD these days.

y0himba I have 3 versions of Flick installed.  Seems like one build will like an input format better than another.  Usually though, if you drag and drop a video and it takes it, it completes without error.  I like flick.  Just seems like some of the other apps get more out of multi-core CPUs.  I hope the author updates it again.  1307 has been out for awhile.

Updated to v. 1.05   Added About, Show Readme, and Donate commands to the tray menu.  About digs out the file version from the resource so no need to use explorer Property page to check the file version.

The About box automagically closes after 5 seconds.

Hmmmmmm, I don't see the big deal.  The dude just came out of the dark ages of using Roman Numerals.  If he named the kid Jon Blake Cusack.dll that might be a different story(or even a whole library.)

If he did that, the "terrible twos" would give a whole new meaning to the term "DLL Hell". And 2.0 might give a new meaning to "terrible twos", now that I think about it.  :P

Not only that but if somebody moves out of the house a message might pop up "This shared library is not being used by anyone.  Delete it?"  :)

And there are way too many creeps out there already.

I think Groucho said it best:

"There's one way to find out if a man is honest - ask him. If he says, "Yes," you know he is a crook."

But, I can also imagine Groucho saying "Show  me an honest man and I'll show you a guy paying a divorce attorney" or something like that. :)

edit: btw it's easy to recognize the creeps.  They are the ones with a hot babe on each arm. :)

I just wish it worked in the reverse direction too, i.e. me drinking made me more attractive.

I'm sure it does.  After a few you think you're Don Juan.  heh heh

What happens when the next child comes along? Presumably a new version will be an upgrade and therefore they lose the right to the original version!

Presumably the poor kid will be relagated to a dusty cupboard where old software goes to be out of site (until the tidy up and throw out).

Seriously though how many parents actually think about the consequences when they inflict names on their offspring!

I once new a teacher called Rhoda, she married a friend called Andrew Dick.

Needless to say he adopted her surname after the wedding otherwise she would never have gone to school again!

With the hyphenated names it could get pretty weird eventually.  You could get a person with family name something like Butcher-Baker-Candlestick Maker .NET 10.9

General Software Discussion / Re: How to run a program and minimize it?
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 12, 2009, 11:29 PM »
When programs override the minimize, maximize or close buttons on the frame, there's no standardized way that I've found to predict what action will happen or if it will detect the current state it is in if it didn't cause it internally.

I wrote a "single instance" component where I try to maximize the already running instance before the second instance quits. In the end I had to add an option to turn that attempt off because it could produce weird results like what you mention here. If the program minimized "normally" with a button on the taskbar, usually things worked as expected.  But if the program minimized to tray, once you acted on it from outside all bets were off.

About all I can suggest is mess with it by sending it Hide and Show messages, if it has a System Menu, try that and see what happens.

I just messed around with Gigaget download manager which has no option to start in the tray that I know of, but if you click the 'x' on the frame, it will minimize to tray with no task bar button.  Great.  So I send it a 'hide' msg with NirCmd.  Now it won't open normally.  The only solution was to run another program that made Gigaget the active window and sent it an Alt-F4 since it handled that as minimize to tray also.

Every program is going to be different. Unless you run one of those monitor things that can figure it out, then it's pretty much trial and error.

At least afaik.  I haven't done one of those tray minimizer hider apps. Someone that has will likely have more insight.
