I'm not a gamer (as in, not at all) - but I grew up with Asteroids and Space Invaders (arcade versions).
Looks great, and is difficult!
I even cant get used to using the arrow buttons - yet - it doesnt help that I'm left handed and not a touch typist - I presume people who actually play games on computers wouldnt have this problem. But I find I dont have much precision control moving left to right - dont know if that's just me, or my keyboard, or the game.

Did you ever export your settings?

I do that periodically as the way I use DOpus evolves.

The 'everything changed' phenomenon happened to me when I went to 10, so I just imported the most recent settings and all was back to normal.

So, try exporting your settings before updating and then reading them back afterwards.

there's no easy answer to that - I decided on moving up to win7 to try a clean install of dopus, see what it looks like and gradually customise it (as opposed to using settings from previous version).
So I didnt have any backup of recent settings. I have to look at it closer, if I could even restore defaults I'd be happy...
There was a lot to like about the default install of 10 (partly why I thought I'd make a fresh start) but there seems to be a lot of stuff very well hidden - like not even in the menu - but due to things going weird I'm no longer sure what's default, as I am unable to restore it

edit - I havent spent much time trying to figure out what happened or how to proceed. I'm sure I'll figure it all out. Might try messing around with my USB install - that could be a good way of checking stuff

Before removing it from start, make sure DOpus is not the default handler of anything!

To be safe, you probably should also deselect "Replace Explorer" in options under "Explorer Replacement" and restart Dopus (before removing it from start-up).

Here's a short, proof-of-concept, screencast of what I had in mind.  It uses a system-wide hook that allows you to match window classes, title, etc and changes a small text wint window accordingly.  Obviously, the GUI is very basic but, again, this is just a proof-of-concept.

Initially I was thinking of the few shortcuts (per programme) that I wanted to learn. When I saw the XY list I realised how little I know the programme and that this could be a way of learning more about it - I dont know would this (learning) actually work, but I can only tell if I try it out...

So, yes, then scrolling would probably be necessary.

I did an install of win7 lately on a computer with a slow drive and a fast drive - I put windows on the fast drive but the other drive was "drive 0" so windows put the hidden 100mb boot partition on it.

It really should ask *where* to put it....

(I reinstalled at the time - after disconnecting the slow drive - but I was getting advice from the experts)

I'm looking at Rainmeter but it's certainly not intuitive, options all over the place, and while I have a notes window showing, it is limited height & I cant find how to change that.

@tomos:  Something like this would be rather easy to write as a basic AHK script that you could easily modify and extend to your needs.  I wouldn't want to write a configuration GUI for it, though.  One question, though.  When you say transparency, do you mean full window transparency?  Or, do you mean you only want to see floating text and no other window elements?

Here's the Rainlender notes "window" with some sample text - it seems to have a background with a tone as opposed to a colour (?) i.e. it darkens the background colour which help the text show clearly.





i.e. Skwire, I'm not really sure - I dont want to ask you to reinvent the wheel, but would something like that be (easily) possible?

So far a vague idea -
I'm working with a couple of programmes where I'm not fully familiar with the shortcuts.
Had the idea to show a list of shortcuts overlaid on the desktop (to one side) related to the current focused app.

• Shown transparently on the desktop could be problematic because of different coloured backgrounds (text not showing clearly)
• Might be easier (but less elegant) to have a list open in Notepad or whatever
• Lists would have to be made manually
• Lists would probably have to be changed manually

I'm not sure if it's worth the effort for many programmes - but for one programme (for me) I think it would be.
I guess I could make the list for that, make a transparent gif/(?) and overlay it on the desktop somehow - was there an app here lately that did that? (couldnt find, but I have a distinct memory of some way of showing an image on top of desktop image...)

if you are looking at PDF/Screenshot Captor, I'll bump this request again:
- to keep original document size when saving as PDF
(details quoted in spoiler)

  1) I scan something, say a letter - text fits easily in A4 page
   2) tidy & crop it in SC
   3) when it is saved as PDF, SC enlarges the scanned image so as it fills the (A4) page to the very edge

I was hoping that step #3 could be stopped/removed ?

I notice when I save a screenshot using "save as", there is drop-down-options "Fit" where I can set percentage between 25% and 400%. I thought this could be a good workaround when saving a scan as PDF - but unfortunately it doesnt work when I save as PDF - the image always fills the page (no margin even)

So, I guess there is an invisible setting somewhere that defaults to "Fit" when saving as PDF. Is there a reason for this? - if it's just accidental would you be able to change it to 100% [i.e. actual scan-image size doesnt get changed - unless I change it manually] ?

OK, running FARR as admin starts apps as admin.

I wonder would it be possible to run FARR as admin, but that, by default, launched apps would *not* be run as admin.
I know that the opposite is possible i.e. to launch apps from a normal instance of FARR as admin (via Ctrl+Shift+Enter.)
