Crap! Now I'm fixated on slide rules (in addition to calculators).

Just FYI, I note that GoodSync is billed as being able to connect to and synchronize with Amazon S3.

in that case maybe they should also offer a Kama Sutra merit badge?

sex is a very important topic for my two 12 year old nephews. even if it is just something to talk about.

I hope.

You posted this while I was pecking out my missive, above, Gwen. Hysterical!

I'd say that this is indefensible... having said that, it seems to me that when I was a cub scout there were all sorts of merit badges for activities such as stamp collecting and model building, activities that have tenuous relationships with the outdoors and survival skills. Having said that, I dimly recall being disappointed when I got to Scouts and all the merit badges were for things like first aid and orienteering. So... video gaming doesn't really strike me as being an outdoor survival skill, but then, what do I know? Recent headlines have proclaimed that video gaming is good for hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and problem solving. Maybe we just have to keep up with the times? Still, scouting means camping in the snow to me!

PS I tried to use SFFS to sync my Roboform data with Roboform's online backup service (https address) and SFFS couldn't handle it. It did ask for my login credentials and I've confirmed that it's set up correctly. Don't know if this is to do with Roboform wanting to get people to buy their own GoodSync software as well? At any rate, I mention this in reference to the S3 query. I *suspect* that this will be an issue with S3 as well, though I have no way to test it.

Free? Wow - that's amazingly generous! So V.5 is working good for you? Stable?

Yeah, sorry, I managed to miss the "5" when I typed SFFS above. I've been running SFFS 5 preview for months with no problems at all.

Here's the posting about the upgrade (hope I've interpreted it correctly!):

http://www.backupcre...de-options-t105.html

Mike, have you installed the beta separately from your V.4 install - or on top of it?

Re the upgrade cost he does say
"any license includes at least two years of free upgrades and updates" so it may depend on when the license was bought...

I installed the beta over top of v.4 (a long while ago) and have not had any trouble since.

Here's what the developer says:

Yes, v5 will be a free upgrade if you have v4, including all revisions. It will take the same registration codes as v4. Independently, any license includes at least two years of free upgrades and updates.

My reading of the above is that it won't matter when you bought your v4 license. He does state that his mention of the two years of upgrades and updates is independent of his first statement, that if you have a license for 4 you're good for v5, too. Very generous, really, as I purchased v3 at least three years ago and was given a free upgrade to v4 in March of 2008.

An old Yorkshireman...
"If I wanted a flaminng mayonnaise sandwich, I'd ask for a mayonnaise sandwich"

Is it not true that, in some parts of Yorkshire, mentioning mayonnaise remains a hanging offense?
-cranioscopical (April 22, 2010, 11:14 AM)

Clearly! Two other of his pet peeves were peanut butter ("muck") and pasta ("I don't want no flaming pastas (sic)")... No one DARED suggest that he eat peanut butter. Verboten.

I hate installers that install these toolbars, even if it is "optional". My feelings about it remind me of an incident with my grandfather. An old Yorkshireman (he would have been around 92 at the time), I was making him lunch - a cheese sandwich. I asked if he would like mayonnaise on it and he barked at me:

"If I wanted a flaminng mayonnaise sandwich, I'd ask for a mayonnaise sandwich"

Says it all, really.

Miss my grandfather dreadfully... though I was scared Witless of him when I was young!

Sorry, Jim, I'm not using SFFS with S3. SFFS is still very solid here... As far as updating goes, I was in the same boat - checking the download page to find out if any were available. With the beta of v.5 there is a "check updates" feature from the help menu. Just FYI, author has stated that v.4 licences will work with v.5 (ie, it's a free upgrade).

1: Agreed, a thread split is probably advisable. Incidentally I did take advantage of the "pay what you want" sale - $20 - mostly on the basis of how nice and informative the dev is. :)

Me too! Of course, I also purchased Helicon Filter when it was on BDJ  :-[

btw, the BDJ offer is for a lifetime license (so it's still tempting aaaaghh!):

You're an evil little man, Tom! I'd managed to walk away from the BDJ offer and you've got me scurrying back over to review it (yet) again  >:(

Beethoven - Agent Ransack doesn't index your files, so it works in a very different way from Copernic. It will (likely) search much more slowly and will find fewer "hits" in comparison to a file indexer.

No -I'm sentimental... Actually, I have 3.11 Windows for Workgroups setup as a VM and occasionally set it up a play with it. Haven't done so in a couple of years, mind you!

Me too, though I admit I have been purging a lot of stuff from there lately. I mean, after all some of the apps won't run on any OS past Win 98SE!

Jim

;D I've got folders for Win 3.x apps and for DOS 5 and 6 programs in that directory. Neither of them are more than about 5 MB in size, though... Amazing!

The point is, as I understand it .. you cannot be sure of removing the earlier Nets.  Unpredicatable results will occur, you cannot trust if a program designed for 1.5 will work under 3.0 etc.   If this is wrong, share away.
-Steven Avery (April 06, 2010, 03:10 PM)

Ah - I see your point. It is adviseable to have ALL versions of .net installed lest some application or another insist on it... I dunno, my harddrive - even on my notebook - is vast and I don't sweat that anymore, either... Though I do like to run my computer with (relatively) few applications installed these days.

Now I know that you are a software junkie, as I am, and so you must also have the same sort of "Program Setup Files" directory stored somewhere on your system where you keep all your licensed software installation files, installed and not-installed. (Mine is currently... <blush> 17.7 GB....  and that's down from 22 GB; I zipped up some larger ones and burned them to DVD!)

Jim

55.5 GB  :-[ after having recently cleaned it up a bit. I'd hasten to add, though, that this includes my "can't live without" freeware applications, lots of stuff I've long since stopped using, and current drivers for my hardware.
