Finished Programs / Re: DONE: clean the marked text
« Last post by tomos on October 09, 2018, 04:22 AM »
Hi Curt,
is it the text editor that adds the underscores?
(If so, are you planning on continuing using it?)

One day, still many years ago, they updated the program and my favourite feature disappeared!
what was that feature?

« Last post by tomos on October 01, 2018, 06:25 AM »
You're optimistic there Torah. A bit simplistic too: that an economy based on Bitcoin would be better is very debatable.

As Bitcoins continue to be mined they begin to create more value since more people begin to own them.
again seems very simplistic to me: the real value is fluctuating independent of the mining. Add to that -- mining costs more than Bitcoin is currently worth IIUC (or has that changed again?)

Screenshot Captor / Re: SC main window shows up after capture
« Last post by tomos on October 01, 2018, 06:17 AM »
^ on my desktop, SC main window shows up after capture with following settings:

this setting unchecked:
"the Capture Options tab, and uncheck "Hide Screenshot Captor Window""

Hide main form is selected via tray icon context menu (not sure where that is in options) -- see shot below.

EDIT// via Capturebar, setting post-capture is "Save [file] but keep main window minimized" //EDIT

Screenshot - 2018-10-01 , 12_58_57.png

But when I take a screenshot, if the SC window is open in the background, it will come to the front and stay there.

Presumably some setting is different between the machines...

SC up-to-date on both machines.
Windows 7 x64 both
Installed in desktop, not sure if laptop portable or installed..

I don't really understand the hide and restore action of SC window in this case - in fact it's not something I ever really need (I think). Can that be disabled? (I unable to check atm.)

Yes, in fact you should be able to avoid this problem if you go to the Capture Options tab, and uncheck "Hide Screenshot Captor Window".
interesting:
on laptop (win.7/portable SC v4.29.0) it works properly, whether checked or unchecked --
when checked, there *is* a flash, presumably where the windows shows momentarily and hides again.

Will report from desktop -- where I had the problem -- prob at weekend.

Here's one case where this can happen: If SC main window is left not minimized, but on screen and behind another window, then when you take a screenshot, SC will hide itself and then redisplay itself after capture -- suddenly becoming noticeable.
It will do this even if you have the setting set to "Stay minimized".

Said another way, the "stay minimized" option will keep SC minimized, but there are times when you've left the SC window open on screen and brought up other windows in front of it, obscuring it.  In such cases, the "stay minimized" option has no effect, and the default behavior of hiding before capture and then restoring after capture kicks in.

It can be disorienting.

Maybe I could change it so in that case SC would hide and restore, but then slink behind other windows as it was before the capture..
I've always considered this a bug and would like very much if you could change the behaviour.
I usually have the SC window open if I'm taking a bunch of screenshots; I might work on one a bit then go back for another couple. I always just want the SC window to *not* come to the front.

I don't really understand the hide and restore action of SC window in this case - in fact it's not something I ever really need (I think). Can that be disabled? (I unable to check atm.)

Living Room / Re: EU to Stop Summer (or is it Winter) Time
« Last post by tomos on September 17, 2018, 07:00 AM »
Interesting post Shades

Regards artificial time Curt - I know what you mean, but if you think that some east European countries use the same time/timezone as Spain - that's already artificial. So for me whether one chooses to stick with summertime the whole year round, or to use what is closer to 'real' time is unimportant. Just so long as we don't make things more complicated by introducing more variation to the mix.

Personally think the need for DST has long since past.
agreed -- just because it's 'always' been there is no reason for it actually being there.

and they the entire EU should be unified on the exact same time "to make trade easier"

I dont believe this is the goal here Stephen -- they are not scrapping time zones.

No, they are making them a joke ... what's the point in a time zone if they're not going to use them?
well, yeah, if they allow each country to decide which time they want, it will be the equivalent of a patchwork of time zones. So could be the opposite of what Stephen was suggesting :-/

« Last post by tomos on September 16, 2018, 05:57 AM »
There's been a bit of discussion about stopping the clocks going back/forward within the EU.
I can only one find one site reporting the decision on Friday to go ahead with scrapping summer -- or will it be winter -- time. The site appears to be reputable. Possibly the decision was made late Friday when all other reporters were already in the pub. Or something.

EU to stop changing the clocks in 2019

It's not clearly stated, but sounds possible that each country will decide whether they go with summer or winter time :-/

I've read that coding for time is difficult. Sounds like it may get even more complex in 2019.
Me, I look forward to it -- hope they go with summer time.

Make your choice, accepting that whatever you do will be imperfect and temporary.
sage advice there rj  :D

Not necessarily related to K's query: read a review/article lately comparing the Xaomi Pocophone favourably with the Samsung S9 -- Xiaomi's $300 Pocophone Vs. Samsung's $1,250 Galaxy Note 9: It's Closer Than You'd Think (Forbes)

I might be able to work with something like that (except that I don't have Photoshop). If there's a way to replace the colour of "isolated" pixels (that is, those that don't have any of the same colour right next to them) with that of the ones surrounding it, it would certainly greatly improve the overall quality — even if the text isn't perfectly readable, it would probably look much less ugly with less pixel noise.

What I did in photoshop was close to that (see description in my previous post). The result was more or less unreadable. (I didn't post screenshot of that.)

I thought converting to indexed colour might work but no joy:
Converted one of the samples to indexed colour with 8 colours in photoshop.
Didnt improve the image much, was still left with three tones in the grey area (b/w/grey).
If I replaced the white with grey (selecting it using 'magic wand' tool), the grey are looked better but the text then went very heavy and more difficult to read...

converted to 8 colours / indexed colour:

it's nice to see the enthusiasm for learning

Regards the responses you're getting here - I know nothing about the topic but can see you're being given a big opportunity to learn how to approach things, how to tackle a problem, how to learn.

Can you tell us:
why don't you take the experts' advice?
why don't you answer their questions?
