Can I just provide a URL to the tech section of the creators site?  If I have to compose a forum page myself... it'll probably take me days and I'll probably just lose interest.

I think you'll need to PM Mouser about that one. :)

Since we're totally off topic, I'll share something a friend sent me:

Well...She sure is pretty. But with muzzle discipline like that, I don't wanna be standin' in the same county, let alone the same field, when this lady starts shootin'.

Damn, she's dangerous!
:tellme:

Next time they turn her loose with an automatic shotgun they might want to see to it she has a few hours of training - and maybe another 20-30 lbs worth of weight on her - before somebody gets hurt. (Or a plane gets shot down.)

Let me reword that. How do I submit a freeware product for review that I stumbled over online?  :D

You can always write up a "mini-review" of what you found and post it in this section.

But there's no "submit for review" queue or process here. And no review team or moderator. Reviews are independently written by DC members who take it upon themselves to do them on an ad hoc basis. It's all very informal.

If you were the product's developer, you could post on the link Ath provided and possibly make a general request that someone at DC to do a review of it.

But if it's just something you found, your only alternative is to write the review yourself, or mention it in a discussion and hope someone else gets interested enough to write a review.
 :)

Addendum: if it's just something you're trying to get reviewed (for whatever reason) you could always send a heads-up to the editors at sites like TheFreewareJunkie, TechSupportAlert, gHacks, or MakeUseOf. They're always looking for good software and services to review.

The problem with US law enforcement is its tendency to operate with a broadsword and executioner's axe rather than a scalpel. And to equate 'equal justice' with a "one size fits all" approach to enforcement.

+1 with Cranioscopical!

I've been using it heavily for over a year now and I find it exceptionally useful. I've even set it up for a few clients, all of whom have given it rave reviews. And financial contributions.

One is currently experimenting with its webserver capabilities to see if it could function as their private corporate e-library system.

Also kudos for that mention of Qiqqa. That's another essential research tool that deserves to be much better known than it is.

Sorry - not my intent to offend you or anyone here.

@Ren - it's more a matter of esthetics than me being offended. I just associate 'STFU' with all those whining ALL IN CAPITALS SCREAMING DIATRIBES!!!! you run into on the kiddie boards.

And I didn't want to see it greenlighted here purely because of the audience it tends to attract.

Under no circumstances should you feel compelled, or even think an apology was being asked for.
 :)

P.S. I also think it's very clear you were using a collective "you" rather than a personal one. No offense was taken. And I'm sure we can all see none was intended. :)

When record companies continually screwed their talent, was that legal, was that shady?  Yet, it was so common that we now expect to hear stories of artists being screwed by the agencies.  But just because it's expected, does that make it legal now?  That's what it feels like.  When those artists were poor/normal people, wasn't their talent their power?  And when that power was converted to money, who got it?  And now that the companies are extremely powerful, they have put rules in place to prevent any of the power from backwards movement.  it feels like it sets up a situation for a one-way flow of power and money.

Precisely right.

In the past, musicians got royally screwed over by the recording industry.

Today, musicians get royally screwed over by many (if not most) of their listeners.

Yet somehow, this new reality makes things significantly better for all the working musicians out there.

(Ok. Can somebody please explain to me exactly what it is I'm missing in this logic?)

Not sure still... I still see them as freedom-fighters. I don't see any terrorism. I see liberation... Maybe I'm just an idiot...

OH! I've seen the light! Yes... Ignorance is strength! War is peace...  :-\

Patriot/Freedom Fighter = successful revolutionary.

Traitor/Terrorist = unsuccessful revolutionary.

The tactics don't change. The collateral sufferings are real. And very often, the reprisals and "payback" continue long after one side attains complete victory.

But the winning side gets to tell the 'official' story. And put the spin on it.

However, I refuse to blame someone that makes $400 a year for pirating my software. Those people aren't the problem.

I hear what you're saying. But you have to be careful with situational ethics. All distinctions such as these avoid dealing with the underlying issue by creating exceptions. And it leads down an endless path. By way of example:

Statler and Waldorf bench.jpg

I don't have an issue with people who are taking something against the wishes of its creator if they are making less than $400.

What about if they're making $450 or less?

I still don't have a problem with that...

    Ok. How about $600?

Not too much a problem...

    How about $100,000?

Yes. I'd have a problem with those people.

    Why?

Because they can afford it.

How do you know they can? Or the people making only $400 can't?

Well...there's a big difference between $400 and $100,000...

So what? Maybe the $100K guy is paying all the medical bills for his mother and is broke for all intents and purposes. Maybe the guy with $400 has no bills or responsibilities because he lives with his parents who pay for everything and don't care. So that $400 is pure disposable money burning a hole in his pocket.

Well...you can come up with an exception for everything.

Precisely. If $400 is ok, why not $450? If $450 is ok, how about $600? If ...

Ok, ok. I see your point.

Glad you do. Because I grabbed a cracked copy of your software off the torrents last week.

That wasn't right of you to do that.

How can you know possibly argue that?

Because you could afford it. And so could a lot of the people who will be downloading it.

How can you possibly know that?

Something seems wrong with this argument you're making.

There's nothing wrong with it. You're the one that introduced exceptions into the debate as wildcard arguments. Once you do that, you can argue virtually anything and not be wrong.

But...but...

But me no buts! Unless you want to go back and possibly consider there are the deeper issues of morality and personal responsibility lurking under all this - and trying to duck it by introducing exceptions isn't an effective way to get down to the real issue.

I'm a little conflicted by all of this.

Don't worry. We all are. So let's not let ourselves get distracted by bullshit arguments while we're trying to get it all sorted out.

Anybody ever tell you you're a royal pain in the butt sometimes?

At least once a day...it keeps me young.

Well it would be interesting to know what percentage of content on MegaUpload was legal v illegal.

The disease being lack of access/means to legitimate means to get digital content.

Yes and no. There is an 'entitled' generation growing up for whom they very concept of paying for music doesn't make sense. Pretending that, when offered with a very convenient means to buy music, they will choose too is as big lie as the ones Big Content are spewing.

Agree 100%.

Some people operate out of an innate sense of returning value for value received - and many don't.

Returning value is an adult concept. Some never reach that level of personal maturity. And, from my own casual observations, I strongly suspect their numbers are growing.

But considering how much our society has come to accept childish behavior, it's hardly surprising.  :-\

Hardly surprising considering some emoloyment studies have shown that access to social sites (i.e. Facebook) during work hours is more important than total financial compensation to many 20-somethings entering the labor pool. Supposedly, many have taken lower paying jobs just to get it. And savvy employers are taking advantage of that.

I wouldnt have believed it except one of my clients received a (characteristically) unsigned letter demanding that the blocking of Twitter and Facebook by the company's firewall be removed. It went on to elaborate "how crucially important full-time access" to these sites was to its "younger and more technically aware employees" than it apparently was to "people of a different generation." It also claimed to be speaking on behalf of over thirty employees - some of whom were "seriously thinking" of quitting because of the company's Internet policies.

Oh the times...they are a-changing'!

There are actually municipalities in the US that require gun ownership now.  I don't think there have been studies as to what effect that has had on crime, though.

Not that it matters. It's just another example of local politics and grandstanding. Those laws have been routinely deemed unenforceable and thrown out by every court they've ever gone before.

I take comfort in that.

I don't particularly like being bossed around. Especially by idiots in public office. 8)

Dumb move on their part doing that documentary IMO. Dropping the gauntlet is seldom a wise move when confronting a government or law enforcement unless you have the general public at least 90% behind you.  8)

Far smarter would have been to set up a totally separate PR 'front' to handle their publicity.

That's the way professional revolutionaries handle it. Having your own separate press office allows you to get your message out there while still maintaining plausible deniability in the event something goes south - or you get set up in a classic agent provocateur scenario by a government or corporation.

It's also not a good idea to show up in public at all any more. Especially since you can now be arrested, held indefinitely without charges or legal counsel, interrogated at will, bled dry, and then quietly flushed down a toilet once you've exhausted your limited usefulness. And all without anyone being the wiser, or able to help you.

And if you think that's bad, just imagine how much worse it will be if they arrest you in one the non-Western democracies.

There are much worse things than dying. And there are people who can do all of them to you.

So don't insist on making yourself an easy target. And if you do, remember the wisdom of the poet: Servo permaneo bovis provestri!

But it's rather baffling/annoying that a brand new drive would go poof that quickly.

Have a relative that holds a BEE (from MIT no less!) tell me the problem with electronic devices is they can suffer from what he called "infant mortality." He said if you can (1) power up an electrical device, (2) run it for 72 hours under full load (3) then shut it down and let it cool off overnight (3) then bring it back up successfully - it will almost always (99.9999%) run without problems for the next six to eight years. That's because most electrical engineering defects manifest themselves very early on. And about 75% are heat-related, so they won't start to show up until the device has been running several hours.

The basic rule of thumb seems to be: If it's gonna die, it's gonna die shortly after you get it - otherwise it will die no sooner than one month out-of-warranty. So look for the longest warranty you can find. (Not that it will matter. Because hardly anybody ever registers or remembers where they put their receipt.)

According to my genius cousin, it seems that the way they move product these days, there's no longer any such thing as real burn-in testing. Unless it's being sold at MIL-SPEC premium pricing, what little QC there is tests the major components of a device or assembly very briefly. If the little ogre powers up, and a signal is detected on whatever I/O ports it has, it's considered "good." After that, it's off to antistatic bagging for shipping.

The manufacturers do a risk assessment, calculate the projected failure rate from actual returns, adjust the warranty as necessary, and budget for the inevitable replacements. So it's purely a lottery and numbers game. It's sort of like the old rule for buying a truck - it's either: (a) expensive, but top quality and going to last - or (b) inexpensive to buy and cheap and easy to fix.

Most electronic manufacturers opt for 'cheap to replace under warranty' because it's more cost effective for them to eat the occasional bad egg (and write it off on their taxes) than it is to properly and extensively test each individual product. And in the case of something as complex as a microprocessor (with its meeel-yuns and meeel-yuns of transistors and countless potential electrical states) - it's not even possible to completely test them any more. Or isn't if you don't have 20 years to wait for the tests to complete.

Looks like you got one of the bad 'uns.

For customers (friends, family, and me can forget it! >:D), I'll run hard drives for about 72 hours using multipass zero-writes under DBAN. And then run the extended SATA test. Any niggle - no matter how small - and I won't drop it in a RAID. Ditto if the RAID controller throws an exception during setup. I keep a very small supply (about 3) of these 'really good'  drives in stock since the tests take forever even though they're just a click-walk away-wait task. They're kept on a shelf guarded by three ancient Egyptian curses, a flame filled moat, and the meanest drop-out junkyard dog I could find. A sign on the shelf (in 16 different languages) says: Don't even think about it.

The real problem with RAID is that whenever I've mixed drives, I've run into similar hassles about one time in six. RAID controllers are fussy. And they should be. Unfortunately, minute r/w errors, spin sync & timing issues, or electrical differences that wouldn't bother anything else give RAID controllers big stones. Which they, in turn, share with us.

My suggestion? (1) Skip RAID. (2) Do a "po' boy's mirror." Sync relevant directories periodically to an internal drive. Good excuse to take regular work breaks - and you should be taking them anyway. (3) Weekdays: sync directories overnight to an external drive. (4) Image the data drive overnight to a second external once a week on Sunday.

Luck!

P.S. There's a 9mm Glock Tactical in the top drawer behind the pretzel bag if you need it. Just don't point it at yourself or the dog. ;)

@app - that is interesting. 15 defected from endorsing it - and 70 additional have now said they are opposed?

Hmm...subtract the 15 that came over...from the 70 that signed on and that leaves...uh...55 reps that have suddenly found some balls in the wake of public and IT industry outcries?

Not bad... :)

But, if we take the 65 declared supporters and the 101 declared opponents, and subtract them from the 435 reps that make up the US Congress, that still leaves 269 reps (about 61.9% - or 12 out of every 20) who are still waiting for a backbone delivery.

It's a step in the right direction. But how come I still don't feel too good about this? ;) ;D

Remind again why RAID is so awesome? ;)

- Oshyan

Because it's been spoken of highly by Java Jones?  :P

(Sorry. Couldn't resist.)

But if it's any consolation, I also had a RAID failure on a mirror yesterday. Swapped out the dive in slot-0, initiated a rebuild and almost (caught myself in time) told it to rebuild the array from the replacement drive rather than the one holding the data.

Fortunately, I always image the drive (and do a regular backup) before I do a rebuild, so it wouldn't have been a total catastrophe if I did. But who wants to restore from either one of those if they don't absolutely have to?

It was that kind of week I guess.
