Living Room / Re: Firefox users still waiting for Flash crash fix
« Last post by Jibz on June 20, 2012, 01:27 AM »
Let me just grab this opportunity to rant about updating flash.

Having to manually download and install two separate flash updates (firefox and ie) on a number of my relatives computers every time I looked at their computers has been such a pain. So I was thrilled when they finally, after so many years, got the amazing idea to add automatic updating (seriously, how could this take so long?).

Of course, as it turns out, if you are not running as admin all the time, you may be waiting a long time for the automatic update (30 days), which is hardly acceptable. Also, I found you have to actually check if it updates both versions, or only one of them.

This is part of the reason I have installed Chrome on their computers -- knock the silent updating all you like, but for people who are not computer experts it is an absolute blessing that it just works.

...were you looking at the e-mail where you clicked a link from within your yahoo account ...
-Jibz
Yes - did a right-click then open in background tab.

.. It's called PEBKAC ..
-Deozaan
I trust you enjoyed that.

Well, if the browser allows arbitrary javascript in one tab to do stuff on another tab, I would call that more of a browser problem than an "Error 40". Or perhaps a web e-mail API problem?
628
That is interesting .. just for clarity, were you looking at the e-mail where you clicked a link from within your yahoo account, or was it somewhere else? I hope it is not possible to access stuff like your address book from remote sites.
629
I'd go with Hotmail hacked. It's happened to me, same kind of thing, everyone in my Hotmail contacts started receiving spam saying it was from me.

Yeah, the headers look fairly believable, and if there was some security hole that would allow this in any browser, I am sure it would be widely publicized.
630
Yesterday, I received a spam message from someone I know.

Just for the record, when you say "from", do you mean you checked the headers and it looked like it was a message genuinely sent from her account, or just that the "From:" field in the e-mail contained her e-mail address?

This is really bad for me. Will have to find reliable alternative file hosting for the files linked to on some of my blogs.

At least for now, it only affects new users as far as I can tell (but usually stuff like this ends up covering everybody).

In the thread and on HN, people have posted some hacks to avoid the download page the new share links send you to (like changing "www" to "dl" or adding "?dl=1" to the url). They may work in some cases, but still it's no longer direct links to the actual file. I can understand that they would want to discontinue this feature, I just think it's sad.

Btw, I loved this comment over on HN:

It drives recipients to the Dropbox website.
Eg, right now I can put an image file in my /public, get the link and embed it in an img src tag without the anyone else ever having to know it's on Dropbox.
This way, I can't do that. I can make a clickable link and paste that. Then people have to click to see the picture on the Dropbox website.
Where Dropbox can constructively engage them in a dynamic exciting conversation.

Last sentence is made of win ;D.

That is a bit of a shame, I found those quite useful.

General Software Discussion / Re: Video Editing software - Any recommendations?
« Last post by Jibz on June 15, 2012, 01:17 AM »
I'm with Carol on this one -- the programs whose only purpose is to support almost all video formats are having a hard enough time doing just that, I would rather software like Vegas focused on making editing as pleasant as possible :).

You can't really compare it with image formats, since most of those are fairly simple. There is no end to the crazy stuff these video container formats can contain -- just look at the fact that you need a program like MediaInfo to guess what a file contains and what you might need to be able to play it.

I would like to thank the people who recommended Vegas here .

We recently got a HD video camera, and I was looking for a decent editor for our family videos. Naturally I turned to DCC, and based on the comments here I got Vegas (from Amazon, which was about half the price of any shop in DK), and it has been a pleasure to work with so far.
635
Looks like I was lucky enough to win one as well, thanks to Sujay and Janos Mathe .
636
However, would be nice seeing participants actually try application before they speak.
"I'm in" "Count me in"  truly boring.. Add rules & eliminate contestants/remarks like that.

I think you have to be careful about that, it could reward artificial comments. For instance, my post there was just a "thanks for the review" type reply, and that was because I didn't have anything I felt was useful to add about the software itself, that was not answered by the review and me trying it.

If I had to write some contrived question or commentary to be eligible to enter, I would probably have passed :-[.

I have seen contests in the past where the posts had to answer a question, like "describe how you would use it if you won" -- it works well in some cases, and in others not.

What I would find more annoying, is if it were the same 25 people who post something every time, and end up winning over and over.
637
Hahaha~! I can see that! I always check out things to see if I'll actually use them before I "jump over" any offers. :) Another software license sitting in my email inbox does nobody any good. :)

I agree, I only sign up for contests on stuff I really want, and I have been quite lucky I must admit, winning stuff like Total Commander in the DCC giveaways :-*.

Hehehe! The thing that ticks me off are all those "...if you... repost/share this..." on FB. That's a guaranteed way to make certain that I won't. :P

Same here, I am not liking anything on facebook to enter a contest :-[. I like the way this one was made, signing up for their newsletter and making a post is fair enough, and making the rest optional (I followed him in G+ though, because that works differently).

All in all a nice contest yeah .

http://gigaom.com/mo...ystem-dysfunctional/

In his remarkable ruling, U.S. Circuit Judge Richard Posner stated that there was no point in holding a trial because it was apparent that neither side could show they had been harmed by the other’s patent infringement. He said he was inclined to dismiss the case with prejudice — meaning the parties can’t come back to fight over the same patents — and that he would enter a more formal opinion confirming this next week.

I'm not sure why you think this is a personal problem, it's not my screenshot :) maybe read the articles :)

Probably because with the hline and everything the links at the bottom of your post look more like a signature to me than part of the post :-[.

No adds here using Crome with AdBlock -- have you tried clicking that "why these adds?" link and see if it's something you can disable perhaps?

No adds here using FF & Adblock - I wonder is it a European vs. US thing (me & Jibz being in eu/europe)

Good point.

Living Room / A judge with programming experience, maybe there is hope?
« Last post by Jibz on June 03, 2012, 04:20 AM »
From The Economist via Hacker News:

"So long as the specific code used to implement a method is different," the judge wrote, "anyone is free under the Copyright Act to write his or her own code to carry out exactly the same function or specification of any methods used [to achieve work-alike functionality]," adding that "where there is only one way to express an idea or function, then everyone is free to do so and no one can monopolise that expression."

...

The full 41-page ruling makes for a riveting read. In part that is because the judge has, as he noted during in the trial, written programming code himself—and learned some of the Java language under consideration to test the claims Oracle's lawyers were making about the nature of work-alike functionality. What Oracle attempted to do, it appears, is apply principles of patents (which protect methods) to copyright (which protects specific creative instantiations).

It is great that we are finally starting to see some people who actually have a shred of experience with programming making decisions about software. I think many of the ridiculous decisions of the courts and patent offices reflect the total lack of understanding of what they are ruling about.

Developer's Corner / Re: Visual Studio 11 Express to only build Metro apps
« Last post by Jibz on May 26, 2012, 03:39 PM »
Yes, like Carol says, my reason for posting about this was mainly that it looks like the native C/C++ compilers will no longer be available, which I think is a sad development.

I am not terribly fussed what UI toolkit is the future of programming at the moment, it seems like there is a new one every six months.

But I think having the native Visual C++ compiler available gave them some free goodwill from for instance the open source programmers. If you have to pay to get hold of the compiler now, they may be less likely to support VC++.

Developer's Corner / Visual Studio 11 Express to only build Metro apps
« Last post by Jibz on May 25, 2012, 03:31 AM »
Via Hacker News

http://www.engadget....dows-8-desktop-apps/

Microsoft has instituted a big change with its free Visual Studio 11 Express suite that's leaving some current- and soon-to-be Windows 8 developers up in arms: it's pulling support for creating anything but Metro-native apps.

This is a mistake imho. The amount of money they will make from people who want to build native apps is minimal, and compare that to the goodwill from, and benefits of, having developers use their tools.
