If one still has the status bar, StatusbarEx is informative
... on my system it seems not ready for prime time.

^ Due to the "signed"+"signed", and because it is working well on my (32-bits) PC, I didn't notice at first that StatusbarEx hasn't been updated since 2011 :-[
Sorry!!

I think they might have upgraded/superseded this service to some paid alternative called "Blur", or something, but I continue to use my FREE MaskMe account and Firefox Add-on because it is soo useful.

Apparently you may lose MaskMe etcetera the next time you start using a new machine:

Horrible Experience (Rated 1 out of 5 stars) by windyctyprog on September 30, 2015 ·

I am moving to a new laptop and PC, tried to add Mask Me, won't work anymore.
Went to the site, tells me that it only shows my list from 470 days ago.
I've had an account for years, now it won't recognize anything, keeps trying to set up a new account.
I don't want Blur, have no need for it, I just want masked emails - I already use Last Pass, won't shop on-line anymore.
Now I've lost years of masked emails. Trying to deal with Abine over the years has been problematic, not sure they really care.

Here are a few details from the very fine FAQ section https://dnt.abine.com/#help/faq/faq-blurNonUS

, regarding this Blur thing:

Can I purchase Blur premium if I am not located in the U.S.?

For security reasons, we have pretty strict credit card authorization procedures, and one of those procedures is an AVS check, which we require to verify and charge a card that is put on file with us. Unfortunately, the majority of non-US card issuers do not support an AVS check, so most international users are typically not able to sign up and purchase a premium subscription.

In addition, Blur’s premium features are limited outside of the U.S., as masked cards only work with a valid U.S. billing address and masked phone only works in specific non-U.S. territories. However, the ability to backup & sync your account info is a premium feature that would work for anyone in any country.

If located outside the U.S., you may be able to sign up successfully via our mobile app (through GooglePlay or the Appstore), as we don't handle the subscription billing in those cases - but because we don't handle the subscription billing in these cases, we also cannot offer you any discount for the lack of full premium coverage.

If you’d like to be placed on a list of international users who wish to be notified when the full set of Blur’s premium features are available in their country, please email us at support[a]getabine[.]com with your country included, and we’ll be sure to contact you when Blur premium is available in your area!

How can I get Blur Mobile?

Click here to text yourself a link to install Blur to your iOS or Android device.

Why do I have a charge on my bank statement from Abine? What is it for?

The charge you're seeing could mean one of two things

You purchased Blur premium: If the charge is for $5, $39, $59, or $79, that is a charge for a Blur premium subscription. It's also possible you purchased premium for one of our older products such as MaskMe or DoNotTrackMe.

You purchased a Masked Card: As soon as you create a Masked Card, you will be charged by Abine. This is because Masked Cards work similarly to gift cards, meaning that you're charged to load the funds onto the Masked Card, just like if you were to purchase a gift card. If you created a Masked Card, but didn't use it, click here and then select 'Refund Card Balance' from your Masked Cards page.

If none of this sounds familiar, please contact support with details of the charge before you file a dispute against Abine/Blur, as we are happy to help resolve any payment issues directly.

How do I refund a Masked Card back to my credit card?

Navigate to the Masked Cards section of your Privacy Dashboard, or simply click here.

Click "Refund Card Balance" next to the Masked Card in question. The refund will be reflected to your real card in 2-5 business days.

QTTabbar is a series of DLLs, there is no executor. It doesn't force itself onto Explorer, when registered, but you have to activate it yourself via right-clicking in Explorer. "Explorer in Safe Mode" means QTTabbar is de-activated.

Hopefully we'll fix the issues you are experiencing.
-Blackbird Dev (April 30, 2016, 04:26 PM)

^  yes, hopefully.

Solving the case was made difficult because of Windows' huge update, making me not know who the sinner was. So far it *seems* it was QTTabbar, but I won't know for sure just yet. However, I think it's safe to say, Blackbird was not to blame.

after-edit:

Finally I have found the culprit. (...); ALL the problems went away when I replaced Outpost 9.2 with Outpost 9.3 from April 28'th.
Problem solved. Blackbird is okay     and so is Outpost 9.3

My problems all came back.

But now running Explorer in safe mode, the problems are gone. I guess QTTabbar (http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/ ) could have been the sinner - it has of course not yet been updated to match Windows 10's big update - but there were other extensions. So maybe it was Quizo, and maybe it wasn't. However, I miss it.

The problem I had with Explorer this morning, has gone! I don't understand what caused the problem. Since it's gone, I must conclude it was not made by Blackbird! The only reason I can see right now is, that maybe Agnitum Outpost Security Suite Pro for a moment forgot what was good and what was bad, because of the big Windows update. That update really was huge. But the point is, I didn't change anything, and everything is working fine - so Blackbird must be okay.

This morning the problem was back!!  :o

Hmm... Windows was open, but Explorer kept freezing. Suddenly it occurred to me that the only thing changed from the day before, should be time; the clock, and it was still displaying Windows' default clock, not my third-party T-Clock 2010! When I finally could enter Explorer, I looked into Outpost Security Center and realized that T-Clock wasn't mentioned anywhere in Outpost. Of course it should be, so I navigated Outpost to the file and clicked "Allow". I cannot tell until tomorrow if this has cured the patient - but I expect it has. /(no, it wasn't cured at all)

I am surprised that IainB's list doesn't mention Opera, especially with Opera Turbo, and the (I have deleted the rest of the original post - it seems I was quoting an old, out of date page.) Anyway, the new Opera is fast.

It's sad that I didn't notice the errors that I have today, when I first ran Blackbird, yesterday. But now I cannot access Explorer until it has given up on opening some program. Because of the lack of access, I don't even know what program that is - except the problem has to be due to Blackbird! Right now I am very disappointed - and very embarrassed for having lured others into this BlackHole.
Sorry!

version 2, is where it began to go wrong.

Anyway; I have deactivated and tested this and that, but found no wonder cure. Here it's more than a couple of seconds... but of course you already knew that, from the length of the list of my addons.

General Software Discussion / Win 10: the terrible CompatTelRunner is back!

C:\Windows\System32\CompatTelRunner.exe  :(

Big Win 10 update yesterday, ("update", not "upgrade", I was already running Win 10), but now the terrible CompatTelRunner is starting with Windows, and it is using far too much CPU, from 0% up to 80%, and ever so slowing the use of Windows. After it has done its job, it will close until next Windows launch.

"ThomasJohnson-977" phrased my problem quite well:

>>Wondering what CompatTelRunner.exe is doing on my computer?<<

ThomasJohnson-977: >>I have upgraded to Windows 10 Home from Windows, and my disk is maxed out for 20 minutes on startup every time I start it. So I decided to dig in and found dozens of svchost.exe running, which slowly disappear and dozens of CompatTelRunner.exe start to run. All of them are open to random files throughout my pc. I almost can't even use my pc while this happening because to start something requires disk I/O and there is no bandwidth. Memory isn't full and CPU is 4% or less but I still can't do much during those 20 minutes. Resource Monitor shows the tasks are running in the background, but they are preventing me from doing anything in the "foreground". ANNOYING! When it's done' everything is working just fine.

When I did the upgrade, I said to NOT share anything with MS, except errors. So I don't know what it is doing. I thought at first maybe it's some sort of AV, but the name of this exe just doesn't jive with that. If this is about Windows 7 Compatibility, why is it still running after upgrading, and why on every boot up?<<

"compatibility update for win 7 RTM"? Hmm... maybe, maybe not.  :-\

I don't use "Metro" and I don't have any "apps" running, (only real programs...), so I have no use for this new old thing.

Any one else having problems with CompatTelRunner the first few minutes after Windows has started?
Tips on how to get rid of it?

Humans 'may accidentally send aliens a computer virus'
In September, the UK research network for SETI (the search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) voted in favour of trying to reach out to alien life forms. But they are still undecided what exactly to send and are worried that they could inadvertently send viruses into space which could infect the technology of other civilisations.

surely, that story originates from the 1'st of April?

Google is the owner of Nexus, and they decided that the phone in question is for UK only, so don't yell at Amazon regarding this matter. Even if it's possible to get the phone, Google will most likely not make it possible to actually use it for non-UK residents.

stop watching videos...

I don't know what changes were made, but nowadays most of us have this CPU -eating video problem. One can hope it's because of the improved, modern video quality is needing more power, than the poor videos of yesterday. If Process Tamer tamed the video playing process, your video would not play smoothly. Maybe we just need a more powerful computer?

Yes, it really is a new and updated version 3.3, and my old key was accepted right away. Thanks for telling! I think, however, that Windows 10 Explorer already is doing this particular job equivalently fine.

I do find it ... odd ... that they upload v3.3 to cnet.com but haven't updated their own website: http://www.pssoftlab.com/

^ what is really odd is that the version on their homepage since 24'th of February also is the new version 3.3 (go to http://www.pssoftlab.com/pstf_info.phtml 1.32MB), and, as you said, they don't tell !!!
