Glad you dropped by with that input!
Why the Network Edition you ask?
Well, i belong to a small group and only have access through the network.
That's the edition they've subscribed us to but i did finally install the PC Tools AV and it seems to be doing quite well. Very little resource consumption (only see two "programs" running when CTRL + ALT + DEL).
AVG had four (if not five)!
Besides, not that i want to complain, but my last support request to AVG was a hassle.
Why bother paying if you can't get the support they promise?
I know, it may have simply been my turn just like anyone who buys a computer these days.
It can be the best and still turn out to be a lemon.

Hi,

It's a boring thread, i know...

I've been using AVG AV Network Ed. but find it to be a resource hog on poor ol' XPSP2 with 1.2G of RAM, especially with their version 8 - Anyone willing to recommend their free version as an alternative?

Would appreciate an honest opinion on PC Tools free version too!

Glad you found the technical reasons for this.
Wonder if Firefox or Opera will ever pickup on it?
Firefox3B5 is probably the fastest yet in the Mozilla family but with this Maxthon2,
i must admit that i'm mighty tempted to make a switch.

AVANT is probably a bit faster than Maxthon2 but the later probably has the fastest integrated downloader on the market. Like, i downloaded OpenOffice in less than 12 minutes once. Something that would normally take about 40 min. with other browsers.

Precious stones.
Some are worth enough but it's mostly to show to youngsters.
A friend here has quite a few butterflies, i tend to show those off even if not familiar with much.

@Darwin, you should look up Youtube for Jonathan Winters.
He has a good skit with fountain pens.
Good humour the way it should be.

It's good to hear that PD7 opens quicker than Windows, so i guess that means there was an improvement from 6.
I'm insisting on that part 'cause i find Explorer to be faster at this level than any other file program.

They did mention some new enhancements suggested by users were made.
That's why i was wanting to hear some feedback from users here before bothering with it at all if all they basically added (after so many years!) was that Vista compatibility (useless addition IMO as Vista's own Explorer is likely just as good or even even better than PD - can that be?).

Power Desk 7 has been recently released and i was looking for good opinions prior to upgrading.
It boasts Vista compatibility and other enhancements, but what i'm wondering is if it has improved in speed?
Has load up time and file find or preview been improved even for an XPHome user?

Hi,

I've been using CDS's latest 2.3 build 18 on XP Home and it just chews up my CPU when updating.
Yahoo's is probably best as you can set it aside once it's finished and it doesn't leave anything running in the background and it doesn't chew up much system resources even when on.

FileLocatorPro has boolean search (so does their freeware alternative).

You know, sometimes i dislike myself for criticizing any browser.
People have worked hard on them.

But will all due respect, M2 has had it's fair share of complaints about CPU and resource usage. Just go over to their forum. Many like Chris Pirillo still prefer M1.

Don't get me wrong. Firefox is still my standard browser.
In the good ol' dial-up days, i could tweak it to be much quicker (page rendering) than IE.
What i liked most was (still is) the way it could block most adds along with tabbed browsing, mouse gestures and a very friendly user oriented setup.

I'm just not your die-hard Firefox fan.
If another browser can fit the job then i'm open to try it out.

IE fans can't forget the Active X issues that continue to make the browser quite vulnerable.

The only time i've seen FF use up CPU is when StumbleUpon extension is added.

I like Maxthon, have failed to notice any important CPU usage there.
Likewise for Opera.

I find it rather slowish to enter/modify contacts with GMail.
Prefer doing it with Thunderbird and upload contact database to a specially created IMAP folder on GMail with an extension called Addressbook Synchronizer.

Living Room / USB device misbehaving

Hi,

A couple of years ago, i acquired a 40G USB device to backup my notebook to.
It works but often does weird things, like, it sounds like it's spinning around for nothing, shifting to and from the neutral area in a rather sporadic way.

When it's finally stable, i can perform backups and defrag it etc. but often i find myself turning it off/on to finally get it doing. Is this a sign that it's days are counted?

Actually, if you have the toolbar installed, there's an icon that's even smaller than the Firefox one which turns orangy with some scribble in it that let's you know you have a "stick note" to view. You just click on it.

This is not a p.w. manager but someone at Diigo's forum posted that he set a sticky note with his p.w. (private of course) to the web sites he visited via the toolbar. Diigolet probably lets you do the same. No worries about backing up your secure data.

A bit late in the game, but WordPerfect8 crashes often on me.
Mostly at start up though.
I haven't upgraded as i don't find any significant improvements.
Using XP Home.

I would suggest OpenOffice as best replacement even for Word users.
Most people don't need all the extras in Microsoft programs.

Ditto is nice. Doesn't use much memory.

For security issues, I have AVG AV and Firewall Network Edition enabled, Firefox and Opera as main browsers.
I don't work for a bank, so i don't see the need for IE7 and all those security updates.

Start up time may be a bit slower with SP2 and i agree with you, it's not a really big issue but when i have more than one program running or other users want to logon, then slughiness is more noticeable.
