General Software Discussion / Re: What's your Favorite Recent Computer Game, and Why?
« Last post by allen on November 15, 2006, 12:35 AM »
My favorite is probably the flash mmorpg Dofus -- mmo's inherently have more replay value than any other kind of game.

That aside, I too am a big fan of the Hitman series--the latest installment is brilliant.  The Metroid Prime series for GameCube is a great new take on the metroid series as well.

My favorite new standalone game to date, admittedly a year or two old now, is Killer 7.  It's refreshingly different, albeit potentially socking/disturbing.

General Software Discussion / Re: "Mouser": a new concept of a keyboard mouse.
« Last post by allen on November 09, 2006, 02:29 PM »
I watched the video and wasn't impressed . . . but downloaded it anyway as I don't like mice and I'm quickly falling in love with it.  I could stand for an option to go into direct mouse control mode (control the cursor directly with the arrow keys) for more tedius actions, but generally speaking this thing has a lot of potential to elminate mouse usage.  I'm liking it!

Living Room / Re: 17 Different Ways To Tie Shoelaces

Wow! I'm familiar with a number of knots from my time in the Navy, none of which are really applicable to shoe securing -- I had no idea I was in the dark ages with "Bunny Ears".  It's generally a moot point for me, as neither my boots nor shoes have laces . . . but perhaps I can send Jerry to school one-upping his teachers when they issue instructions for the bunny ears!

I'm a big fan of portability and gladly welcome an application to effecitvely portify otherwise unportable applications -- I've never been a fan of having to use a different batch-based hack for each application.  I'd be glad to run a few of my favorite applications through it -- starting with Opera :)

As a paid Pandora user, I would expect to be exempt from commercials if they ever went that route.  Of course, I could also argue that as a paid subscriber to television programming I expect to be exempt from commercials. We all know that to not be true :)

What really bothers me is when there are services with varrying degrees of ads and intrusions and no option to opt out by means of cash payment.  I respect their right make money off of their products--and advertising is certainly an acceptable way to do it.  But nine times out of ten I'd rather pay out of pocket than with my time/screenspace.

As you can see my experience with yahoo music was pretty bad but I have to admit that the rating system is really good and pandora should improve theirs!

I'd be glad to hear more discussion on that simple fact.  Personally, I've always felt the simple yea/nay/neutral approach to Pandora was a strength.  Given the quality of music it gives me, the simple system really seems to work -- and without giving me the headache of figuring out how to rate things.

With Pandora, it's simple -- if it's exceptional, give it a thumb up.  If I hate it, thumb down.  If it's nothing special, but suitable to the station I do nothing.  In my experience with other (non music) services where ratings are involved -- say a 5 point scale -- I find I only use 2 or 3 different points on it anyway.  I'm typically afraid to use 5 often, saving that for the best of the best -- defaulting most things that are really good to 3 or 4 while handing out 1 or 0 to what I don't like.  The middle ground isn't really used.

When you're rating one item at a time, it seems to me the middle votes are fairly useless.  Obviously they won't be weighted much, and mediocrity doesn't deserve much for points anyway . . . but all this speil just goes to say this: Simple is better, saves me wasting all this :)

StumbleUpon.com started out with 3 different rating levels -- but later reduced it to 2, opting for simplicity.  More concise, more clear value system.

I'm unfamiliar with the Yahoo rating system, though -- would be curious to hear about it.  Is it "better" just because it's more complicated or does it boast some clever features?

My wife has already ordered a train engineer costume for Jerry or I'd bird him up.  Personally, I'm not a big holiday person.  As usual, I'll do my best to get out of the festivities :)

Just click the Guide Us button and select the last option on the list.
And Open Pandora can be used with Last.FM...I am doing it right now....and not having to run the Last.FM software to do it...just Open Pandora.  ;)

Ditto!  Never much cared for last.fm on its own -- but paired with Pandora: Great combo.

Halo Plot Revealed
The Halos (there are several) contain an onboard weapon capable of killing all sentient life in the universe.  It's a failsafe in case "The Flood" contained onboard breaks out.  So, it has a little bit of a death ray. :)

;D ;D Damn, I knew i'd lose that argument, but it was way easier making you tell me that than searching the net for the answer :P

Lazy!!

My death ray > your death ray :P

Oops.. I didn't associate "halo" with the game.. lol!
I have played halo (for about 10 minutes, which means i don't know a thing about it :P). Still, I think i'm right, it doesn't have a massive destruction doomsday machine in it, right?  :tellme:

Actually . . .

Halo Plot Revealed

As for the game, I'm not usually a FPS fan -- BUT. I found Halo's environments to be vibrant enough and plot to be interesting enough to warrant the mindless shooting stuff gameplay.  For me, the series has been something like an interactive action film -- and as much, I've quite enjoyed it.

It doesn't have the exploration of the metroid series, strategy or cutenes sof pikmin (for you Mouser :P) or the equipment upgrade based progression of zelda or castlevania. Halo is straight forward.  You run around, kill stuff, get more guns and ammo, maybe have to figure out how to open a door, repeat -- all while watching what I thought to be a really cool plot unfold.

As for console V. PC gaming -- that's an argument that will go on for as long as time.  Personally, I don't care for PC gaming as I find console configurations (and my couch!) far more comfortable. PC = tool. Console = toy. I don't like to mix my tools and toys.  I can completely see the arguments PC gamers have for their medium of choice as well.  Both sides have their merrits.  I like analog joysticks and a couch.  Works better with Jerry on my lap than the PC anyway.

General Software Discussion / Re: Two New Internet Explorer 7 Reviews
« Last post by allen on October 21, 2006, 11:25 PM »
I'm happily an Opera user.  There are many happy Firefox users.  There are also happy IE users.  The bottom line: to each his own.

In my personal opinion, IE7 is a much better application than IE6 -- it's usable.  So for those using IE, they're better off than they were.  Developers who sniff and or develop for only certain browsers are only antagonizing the issue. Save for fringe things -- plugins, very new protocols, etc. -- all the major browsers are capable of rendering most of the same webstuff.  Find the features/interface/etc. you like and there's your browser.

Most of Internet Explorer's insecurity stems as inheretence from it being the most commonly used browser.  All browsers have their holes--but the software with the bigger user share gets the most focus on finding and exploiting holes.

IE7 won't tear me away from Opera, but it sure did replace IE6 on my system.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Regex Renamer
« Last post by allen on October 21, 2006, 09:59 AM »
My favorite is still oscars -- which lists the files in a plain text field. I typically just copy/paste into EditPad, perform the rename regex there, then copy it back to oscars.  I love turning file structures into text files and back :)

It is a nice renamer with macro recording and playback, but still doesn't handle folders.

Um . . . yes it does?

The best part about foxit is how little it is -- it doesn't take an entire lunchbreak to open a simple pdf file, unlike some *coughs*adobe*coughs* applications.

Looks to be terribly simplistic compared to other renamers (that also support regex) -- which is a good thing if you're just looking for a quick regex based rename without having to trudge through seemingly bottomless menus, panels, options.

General Software Discussion / Re: New Winzip will open rar archives
« Last post by allen on October 19, 2006, 08:09 PM »
I registered winzip way, way back in the day -- back when a registered user got a floppy in the mail with the registered version on it.  Years and years before anyone else paid for it.  And apparently before they started keeping track of records.  Their thanks to me for paying when I didn't have to is being forced to pay full price to upgrade.  So niko-mac can kiss my ass. There's no way in hell I'm paying 50 dollars for command line support. 7-zip will suit me just fine.
