Your Phone Is Listening—Literally Listening—to Your TV

(Bhatt said that the smartphone apps that listen for SilverPush audio beacons present the user with a screen asking for detailed permission before using the device’s microphone for the first time.)

This bit strikes me as tactically disingenuous, because the long winded - and I'm sure carefully timed - "detailed request" only servers to inspire people - EULA style - to dismissively agree.

...And to think a year or so ago, we were worried about hackers misusing Acoustic Mesh Networks.

Edge still has some rough edges.

That's for damn sure! I ended up having to install FF at work, just so I could function. Here at home I'm still doing the IE/Edge dance, but I do have FF in the wings - a first for me - for emergencies.

However at least now - Finally! - you can right click Edge in the TB and launch a new window ... Lack of that functionality was a deal breaker for me in 10240. It should have been given its own new software category, called PB&J ... That's Production/Beta Jape.

(For those not wishing to look it up: Jape means Trick or Practical Joke)

This article discusses the specific problem of interruptions to workflow caused by Windows update forcing reboots,

For those that skipped reading the article, go back and read it...The guy completely nails it.

Disgruntled Windows users are now downloading shady apps that block certain updates or cribbing batch files from forums to force-block all updates. This will only lead to bigger problems -- which will naturally require updates to fix, but at that point few will be listening.
-The Article

For anyone from Microsoft wandering by: you need to skip the think tank shenanigans, embrace this as absolute fact, and knock the forced update nonsense off now! Destabilizing the shell by auto running the updates and then pretending to wait for a reboot is contemptuous at best. CHANGE NOTHING WITHOUT THE USERS PERMISSION!!! ...Or Linus Torvalds battle cry of 'Never Break Userspace' will become your epitaph.

It's gone down about $10 since I started looking for ways to buy BTC locally (about an hour).

Hell its dropped almost $70 total today. If highend can wait till Saturday he might just get it for a song by then. I can't afford to move any of mine right now, I'm to far under water.

Somebody presumably has to be getting to customary 0.0001 satos trans fee...why not the folks processing the transactions.

The fee does go to the folks processing the transactions: The miners!

I'm not quite sure that's entirely the case, as there's a fixed number of BTC to mine. So (yes many years in the future), after all the coin has been mined there would be no point in continuing to mine ... So the currency would become worthless because no one would be processing the transactions. Unless there is something else going on in the way of verification ... Got a map of this one Renegade??

And a bit of a niggle: A satoshi is the smallest unit of bitcoin, which is 0.00000001 bitcoins. The customary transaction fee is ~0.00001 bitcoins.

As always customs seem to very, and the wallet default charge I keep running across is ~$0.05 USD or 0.0001 BTC

Quote from: Stoic Joker on Today at 07:58:43 AMBut I wonder do the "Full Node" wallets get paid anything - like from the transaction fees - for their troubles (space usage etc.)?No. They don't get paid anything.

Shit ... That's what I was afraid of. The more I think about it, it seems like I looked into it back when...and then forgot the answer because it was depressing.

It would be nice if they did, even if it was only a satoshi (0.00000001 bitcoins) now and then.

Right along the same lines I was thinking. Somebody presumably has to be getting to customary 0.0001 satos trans fee...why not the folks processing the transactions.

#! ...That'll teach my to think.

I've been using the Multibit (lightweight) wallet, and have been quite happy with it (very fast sync). But I wonder do the "Full Node" wallets get paid anything - like from the transaction fees - for their troubles (space usage etc.)? I'd go full node in a flash if is/could be profitable...otherwise I'd rather save the space.

And since I wasn't born at a time when Roosevelt (Teddy one) was alive, I have a hard time understanding how uploading 75 TB to a service advertised as "unlimited" is comparable to shitting on someone's desk.

It demonstrates a complete lack of respect and consideration for ones fellow man.

I think it's dangerous to just accept these redefinitions of words like "unlimited" and "free".

Yes, but it's hardly unprecedented. The ever popular "Life Time" warranty on car parts - for those that do their own repairs, is actually limited but the legal definition of the lifetime of your car...which is 7 years. So since most people never keep a vehicle that long, it's largely a nonissue ...(which I'm sure the manufacturer is gambling on).. But the still stands for the odd duck holdouts (like me) that keep a vehicle for a very long time.

When "unlimited" means "arbitrarily limited somewhere that we do not tell you...

There's always fine print somewhere, maybe they had it, maybe they don't...I'm not willing to waste hours reading EULA doublespeak to find out.

This is why I thought SpiderOaks stand on unlimited accounts was sane -- if they sell you 1 TB of space, they do not have to care about how many computers, or what type of files, you use it for. You paid for 1 TB, so you can use 1 TB.

That's an interesting alternate direction for the definition, but I like it. And it makes sense from a technical perspective as well.

CrashPlan's "unlimited" is limited by the fact that it is a backup service, so the size is limited by how much you can store on your computer.

This gets closer to what I believe is more in "the spirit" of the offer. How much storage can someone reasonably be assumed to have on their computer? 3TB? 5TB? Or for some of the more adventurous households, maybe even upwards of 10 or 20TB ... But 75+. Nobody in their right mind is just going to stuff that much data up the wire, chuckle, and walk away...especially if it really is that important enough to need backed up somewhere.. There is a limit to how much space one can rationally assume they can lay claim to, before they - in the interest of common decency - pick up the phone and ask someone if X is really going to be an acceptable target.

From an Administrative standpoint, throwing caution to the wind and just stuffing that much data up the wire assuming it will stick is ludicrous at best.

Its a very simple concept. Most people if left to their own devices do just fine. However there are those self appointed extra special people that insist on steaming past the razor edge of ragged reason...just because they can. Once enough of these extra special people congregate on any place or issue the end result is always the same. There is much cracking down and rule making that results in it sucking for everyone.

So if you really want to push with sanctimonious and righteous indignation the sanctity of the all encompassing nature of the word unlimited. Then by god I should perfectly justified in making a backup copy of the entire internet...and just to be sure I get My true, honest, and complete value that I paid for FFS ...So as a steam past a gazillion Petabytes for the umpteenth time like some maniacal Dr. Seuss character... I should be granted cart blanc to make 80,000 copies of said entire god damn internet because I was told I get unlimited storage space damnit!

...Or maybe I could just be reasonable.

So advertising a service as "unlimited" is OK; but trying to see if it really is unlimited is not?

They are changing their policy - it was unlimited, now it won't be and they won't advertise it as such (at least that how I read things).

This change is obviously irritating and inconvenient for people who were taking advantage of large amounts of space, but I don't see anything deceptive about it. In fact they're being quite upfront about it. They offered unlimited storage, found they couldn't sustain it and have changed their policy as  result.

Which is precisely what I was driving at, albeit tangentially. The provider couldn't sustain it because of a few bad apples that just wanted to push the issue past the point of reason. 75TB is ridiculous to start with...and their talking about people that were exceeding 75TB...by an implied factor of wow!

This is why we have such an idiotically convoluted legal system, full of bizarrely worded laws, and lawyers that we'd like to see shot. Everybody just wants to play word games looking for loopholes in everything so they can be right about dumb shit ... instead of just trying to be reasonable to start with.

Free OneDrive storage will decrease from 15 GB to 5 GB for all users, current and new. The 15 GB camera roll storage bonus will also be discontinued. These changes will start rolling out in early 2016.

But it appears - assuming that it's already in effect - that it did not effect those of us with the early adopters 25GB bonus storage...as I'm still showing the space as available.

In your quote it says that change will start rolling out in 2016, so I guess we will have to wait and see.

Shit! ...I missed that. This is why pragmatism is the best I can do ... I always get burned when I try to think positive.

It truly is aggravating when a few idiots fail to use a little common sense, self police their actions, and screw it up for everybody.

So advertising a service as "unlimited" is OK; but trying to see if it really is unlimited is not?

75TB?? Yeah, that's more than just a little past curiosity. Any "unlimited" plan is really just a statistical assumption that everyone's behavior will average out to something that the infrastructure can tolerate. And that's generally speaking a workable plan if nobody decides to be a smartass and push it past the limits of reason.

I'm on a 40Mb symmetrical fiber connection, at my house ... But if I tried pushing anywhere close to 5TB up the wire I'd end up having a very unpleasant conversation with my ISP. So... 75TB!!! That had to have come from some clown on a commercial connection, because there's no way in hell a - classically upstream capped for a reason... - residential provider would have tolerated that volume of traffic coming from a single IP.

On the subject of unlimited storage:

https://blog.onedriv...om/onedrive_changes/

Since we started to roll out unlimited cloud storage to Office 365 consumer subscribers, a small number of users backed up numerous PCs and stored entire movie collections and DVR recordings. In some instances, this exceeded 75 TB per user or 14,000 times the average.

So, apparently 75 TB > Unlimited.

What the hell is wrong with people?!? That's just absurd.

I did however have pause for mild panic when reading this:
Free OneDrive storage will decrease from 15 GB to 5 GB for all users, current and new. The 15 GB camera roll storage bonus will also be discontinued. These changes will start rolling out in early 2016.

I really want to get into BC... but I don't even know where to start with it doing this mess.

I honestly don't think there is a per se 'Right Way' to get started ... There are however a lot of wrong ways (like investing you life savings, etc..).

I went the mining route, because the whole investing/currency exchange thing confuses the shit out of me. But if you're good at that type of thing maybe pushing some shitcoin around might be a good way in.

In retrospect, I put more into the mining equipment than I should have and the money is kinda stuck there now ... But at the time - it looked good - I couldn't see the bottom falling out shortly thereafter. I'm not looking to pull out completely, I'd just like to break even.

Are you still running your mining setup?  And is it still generating an appreciable amount?

(hehe) No. The miners I have are on the wrong side of unity, so they cost more to operate than they produce. I've got a friend listing them on eBay to see what (if anything) I can recoup from them. I may buy another faster/more efficient miner...or I may give up and bail. The coin currently is at $370 so I'm hosed if I selloff now. I'd have been fine if I could have dumped the bulk of the nut this morning @$499.60 ... But that plan got hosed by the exchange's hyper paranoid 3 factor authentication. By the time I (left work and) got home I'd already missed the crest ... So now I'm just right back to being slightly totally fucked again..

Yay...
