General Software Discussion / Re: Power Desk 7
« Last post by Curt on April 03, 2008, 06:44 PM »
My suggestion would be to not worry about the upgrade unless you're looking for one of the items they list as new for v7: Vista compatibility, Hex editing, File notes remain attached to files when the file is moved, improved image toolbar

- very wise words!

PowerDesk Pro 7 is absolutely nothing but a PowerDesk Pro 6 plus these four new features!

Can I repeat myself, please?

I cannot and will not recommend Avanquest!

At least I did't use the discount code I gave in my initial post (-35%) but one of 'your' 50% links.
Thanks!

I too am trying to try it, but it keeps crashing to me too when I navigate the "New Project Wizard" to the images' folder - before I can click any file.

Did you notice that the instructions for installation were a little wrong?

... B4A does of course support Unicode, but not FULLY.

To my big chock I was wrong again: Backup4All does NOT support Unicode at all!!!  :o

Hi,

1. Backup4all does not support Unicode.
To set Backup4all not to show any messages in such cases, please go to Tools->Options->Backup.
Clear (uncheck) "Show file warnings" option. Click OK.

2. To back up file names with other characters than English, please read this article: http://www.backup4all.com/kb/entry/126/

3. To back up without using zip compression, please use the Mirror backup type.
Here is a video tutorial about how to do that: http://www.backup4all.com/kb/entry/200/

If you still have problems, please let us know.

Have a look at The Levelator
FYI:
- does not support .MP3 (WAV and AIFF only).

... look at HeadAC3he
FYI:
- has not been updated for 6 years, and homepage closed.

Download HeadAC3he
FYI:
One may need the AZID DLL to make HeadAC3he work. Read >here<.

Re-reading the thread, I realize that I have not told all there might be to tell, but I don't know if it makes any difference that my Firefox always is being minimized to sys-tray (Notification Area), never to the taskbar, and that my sys-tray 'is' PS Tray Factory?

I was just wondering why these scripts couldn't find Firefox's window.

My Firefox 2.0.013 didn't respond to IfWinExist.ahk being doubleclicked.

However, I think you should forget about this little project. I am having a hard time to explain to myself why I am installing and running a program with the sole job to close another program I could easily close myself in the first place.

But thanks a lot, nosh, for trying to help me out!

Backup Guide / Re: Information about Backup4all 2.3.2
« Last post by Curt on March 30, 2008, 12:28 PM »
4½ hours ago I was feeling relieved, because I finally understood what I did wrong the first couple of times I tried to use Backup4All (B4A), and now realized how to begin a proper backup. Half an hour later, I was so disappointed I actually was thinking about removing B4A from my computer right away!

The backup started at 15:00:52 Danish time (GMT+1). Notice what happended:

Starting backup for "Doc4Me" at 30/03/2008 15:00:52
[15:29:02] Waiting for user input:
  • "Cannot open file "C:\Documents and Settings\karar\Dokumenter\e-Books\ß?.doc".

I was "lucky" because I passed by the desk only two minutes later, and saw that  the screen was showing some strange looking window, so I could click "skip" and see the backup procedure go on. But what if this has been at night and I was off to bed? The backup was stalled on pause: Nothing was happening! And for what? Waiting for me to click a button, because of lack of full Unicode support!!!

To confirm this mis-feature, it did the same thing 1½ hour later:

[17:01:07] Waiting for user input:
  • "Cannot open file "C:\Documents and Settings\karar\Dokumenter\Videoer\Ashley Tisdale - Be Good To Me ??.mp4".

This time I was lucky again and wasted merely six more minutes. It was not the files' content, but the names of the files, that was the problem: "Syntaksen i filnavnet, mappen eller diskenhedsnavnet er forkert." = "The syntax in ("of"?) the file name is wrong"

The actual file names in question:
ßИ.doc
Ashley Tisdale - Be Good To Me ♫♥.mp4

These characters, И♫♥, are of course not common in any way, but they are supported by Explorer and my media players and several other programs, including your browser (?), and to my understanding they are Unicode characters. B4A does of course support Unicode, but not FULLY.

Next problem: the compressing to zip containers.
For some time I watched the text very closely as B4A was working, and it became clear to me that maybe 70 percent of the time was spent "updating zip file"! So my next question must of course be: HowTo backup 'one to one' without compressing? It will not save space, but eons of time!

After 3½ hours I aborted the backup, by then merely 38 % of My Documents were saved. Backing up a computer seems to be so big a project, it clearly takes practising, and has to be well planned ahead.

--

At the end of the day I find it unacceptable that Backup4All did not go on with the backup when it found a strange filename, but STOPPED. It could have informed me at the end or whatever, but it cannot just STOP and sit there, waiting for ever. Maybe there is an option somewhere I should have activated? I didn't find it.

I would also like the option to make a backup without compressing.

And I want Backup4All to FULLY support Unicode.

Edit: I turned off email client, skype, scrensaver and other 'active' programs, before starting the backup. I also first changed Priority to High.

You (your neighbour) might be a lot better off with the all new Breakaway

Breakaway for Windows - Breakaway remasters your digital music...

Edit: It is $30, 30 days trial.

Author's Comment:

Breakaway remasters your digital music library as you play your tunes on Winamp
From the creator of Volume Logic, presenting a new, broadcast quality system to revolutionize your listening experience. Now, all your music, movies, and sound will be presented to you with the highest level of quality, consistency, and depth. Multi-band audio processing will bring out the punch and balance in all of your audio, while detailed and authentic metering let you see it in action. Never again will you have to reach for your volume control to crank up that tune that\'s just too quiet, or turn down that hot track that pumps a little too hard- just sit back and enjoy the sonic bliss! Other features include a fully sizable, and dockable interface, accurate Oscilloscope and Metering, Windows Explorer extension, and setup wizards to squeeze the top performance from your system.

- Leif Claesson

Notice this user feedback, and the date:

Random Review:

Best audio processer, period.

The core technology behind this product is as good or better than the $30,000 radio station processers on the market. This product could easily be marketed at several hundred dollars. What does this mean? It will change the way you listen to music forever. It's that simple. For people who are not familiar with audio processing, it might be confusing at first. After you listen for a few minutes, you'll wonder how you ever lived with out it. Yeah, it's that good.

Notice limitation:

well done
good stuff here, but you've got to make it understand higher resolutions like 24 bit and 32 bit. That'd be a great fix for an update.

General Software Discussion / Re: fast and reliable unzip, unrar, etc tool
« Last post by Curt on March 29, 2008, 06:52 PM »
I will recommend AL-Zip because of the SPEED Extractor; it is the fastest unzipper to use - at least if most of your *download & unzip* operations goes to a default favourite directory. When your internet browser is asking what to do with this zip file you just have downloaded, click Open, and Explorer will open inside a new folder which already has the zip file's name, and also has the zip file's content, now unzipped!

Hmm.. was that understandable?  :-\  - I better quote the site!:

ALZip Speed Extractor
Faster than anything you've ever experienced before, the new Speed Extractor in ALZip is the world's fastest way to extract your archives.

See it in action!
Video: ALZip Speed Extractor (2:55) Edit: Video seems to be down or not yet uploaded
Video: ALZip Speed Extractor - Show Menu (1:04) Edit: Video seems to be down or not yet uploaded

Simply double-click on a ZIP archive and ALZip will automatically extract the file(s) into your preferred default folder. This default folder can be pre-defined in ALZip's preferences.

The ALZip Speed Extractor gives you three distinct speed levels:

3alzip.gif

Open with ALZip = Normal
Extract to My Default Folder = FASTEST!
Show Menu = Super fast

----- much more>

Hmm.. was that understandable?  :-\  - You better read more: "FEATURES"
- and follow the many links!

ALZip   FREE for home users!

As you can see on my screenshot, tomos, it also works here, I did exactly as you (too) directed, but what about the size of the backup: 3 MB backing up 100 GB?? No way! How many GB are you backing up, and how much space does the produced backup files take?

Fragile Brave New World:
The MacBook Air is So Thin…
[ Invalid Attachment ]

but it is getting even worse:

In 2 Minutes You Can…

Posted: 28 Mar 2008 10:01 AM CDT

In 2 Minutes You Can… …brush your teeth, grab a cup of coffee, email a friend, or hack a MacBook Air. Just like last year the CanSecWest conference is currently going on, and tons of hackers cram in to see who can be the first to hack one of the laptops that are provided. The first nerd person to forcefully gain control of one out of the three laptops not only takes home that laptop, but also receives a worthwhile $10,000 cash prize.

The three laptops that were being attacked were a VAIO VGN-TZ37CN running Ubuntu 7.10, Fujitsu U810 running Vista Ultimate SP1, and a MacBook Air running OSX 10.5.2. On the first day of the contest the rules were kind of strict, and the hackers could only go after the computers over the network. There was a strong stench of failure in the air that day.

Then yesterday they decided to let go a bit and let the hackers direct the contest organizers to a website that they created to run malicious code. Charlie Miller, the first one to hack the iPhone last year, was all over it and almost immediately gained access to the MacBook Air. It took him a whopping 2 minutes to get into the system, but no one knows exactly how he did it because he was forced to sign a nondisclosure agreement. Many expect that the vulnerability lies in Apple’s Safari browser.

In case you’re wondering, contestants like Charlie had to follow these guidelines for their attack:

    * You can’t use the same vulnerability to claim more than one box, if it is a cross-platform issue.
    * Thirty minute attack slots given to contestants at each box.
    * Attacks are done via crossover cable. (attacker controls default route)
    * No physical access to the machines.
    * Major web browsers (IE, Safari, Konqueror, Firefox), widely used and deployed plugin frameworks (AIR, Silverlight), IM clients (MSN, Adium, Skype, Pigdin, AOL, Yahoo), Mail readers (Outlook, Mail.app, Thunderbird, kmail) are all in scope.

So congrats to Charlie. Apple… get to work! ;)

I tried the SnapSuite VB rev 2 version today, and you know what, Brandon? In my opinion you should take some more time to work on SmartBrowse in order to (also?) offer it as a stand-alone program; it has so much potential!

But of course, IE8 is just around the corner...  :-\

Anyway, no matter how fine SmartBrowse may be, I know by experience that I am not likely to start SnapSuite in order to start SmartBrowse. Nor will I start SnapSuite in order to start SnapScreen. On my PC I will not start one program just in order to start another - one, that is so small and yet so capable it could easily be a stand-alone program. So SnapSuite must already be open, if I am to use any of the programs it offers inside, and I am not sure I can see why I would have SnapSuite open? Should SnapSuite be a new smart desktop widget?!! § icon_idea.gif
Could you please tell HOW you use SnapSuite?
 :tellme:

BTW: AppLaunch wouldn't start anything. Not Firefox, IE, Maxthon, Thunderbird, Winamp, or RealPlayer.

Backup Guide / Re: Information about Backup4all 2.3.2
« Last post by Curt on March 29, 2008, 09:06 AM »
I don't understand this Backup4All, but that is no surprise because there are so many things connected to computers, that I don't get.

My version is PRO 3.11 build 300. The first year I didn't care to use it because I only had the one and same harddrive. But now my XP is rapidly getting more and more unstable, so I got myself a USB 2.0 Hard Drive for backups. Not fully understanding what type of backup I should use, I simply tried them all - and this is what left me completely in the dark: No matter what type of backup I used, the resulting files on the USB drive would not take up more than approx. 3 MB in total. How is it that 100 GB can scrimp to 3 MB?? I don't trust that! I am so sure that I have told B4A to "make FULL backup", and added ALL files and folders ("C:\ "). I also tried both differental and incremental backups, but could not notice any difference - the total size is still around 3 MB.

So maybe this kind of backup is for settings and such only, or what? I don't really know. I am not even interested in saving some settings, half the joy of getting a new PC is to play around and change both this and that, but I am finally very much interested in understanding HOW I am to make a genuine backup of my PC, before the content is all gone?

I have some fine programs to help me move from one PC to another, but if I don't get a new PC in time, these programs may (also) be worthless because I didn't understand HOW to secure the actual FILES and not merely some settings, or what it is that B4A is backing.

My only backup media is this USB 2 hard drive, I don't have a burner.

Can Backup4All backup the actual files from my computer?  :tellme:

My first step has been to ask Advanced Registry Doctor Pro to check for problems concerning any shared DLLs, and to search for broken links. I didn't check any other options. The answer was surprisingly dramatic (speaking of dark clouds around me, well, on my PC!):

729.gif

260 + 469 :o

My response was even as dramatic: I held on to my breath and clicked FIX ALL!!
Time will show if more problems were created than fixed - so I might get back on this...  :-[

Thanks a lot for your answers, tinjaw and mwb1100!
