Living Room / Re: Firefox Stability Issues
« Last post by nosh on October 01, 2010, 06:29 AM »
I don't run any betas and I've had a few plugin container crashes since they segregated the plugins from the core. Nothing very frequent, though. I've had the whole app crash a couple of times too.

Possibly OT:

Another annoying issue I'm having is when I click a link in Feeddemon. The link sometimes doesn't open in FF and I get a message telling me FF is already running. I'm forced to restart FF to get it to work properly again. It may have something to do with me having disabled DDE for file types URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy. It took ages for Feeddemon clicks to show up in FF with DDE enabled.

Living Room / Re: Was Stuxnet Worm Built to Attack Iran's Nuclear Program?

By messing with Operational Block 35, Stuxnet could easily cause a refinery's centrifuge to malfunction, but it could be used to hit other targets too.

Wonder how many countries currently have some of their nukes pointing to... themselves.

Living Room / Re: Does anyone actually use the Scroll Lock key?
« Last post by nosh on September 21, 2010, 02:19 AM »
using it for its intended purpose is weird.

And what would that be?  :tellme: nvm!

Most of my AHK hotkeys are a combination of Win+ other key. Scroll lock is one of the other keys.

HddLed, an onscreen disk activity indicator, has an option to use the scroll lock LED to indicate disk activity. I tried that for a bit but stopped because something was throwing a fit, IIRC.

I haz iPad! I've just skimmed the surface but it's without doubt the most impressive gadget I've ever owned. :-* There's just one thing I have to whine about... Man, this thing's HEAVY!!

Maybe it's one of those "earn from home, no skills required" a.k.a Careers for Dummies things?

(Either that, or Justin Bieber tweeted about you.)

$0.02 for superboyac:

I would just go ahead and get an iPad... at the very least it'll stop you over-thinking the issue.  :)
There's always something round the corner worth waiting for, as we all know. The iPad should get you by the next year or two when you'll have something much better available (iPad v.2?  :P)

I feel the Dark Side reeling me in.

My requirement is simple: an ebook reader with a large screen that can handle pdf in color.
I have developed a nasty habit of doing most of my reading lying in bed. :-[ A tablet has the most convenient form factor for this and I can't find anything as large and zippy as the iPad.

The only thing stopping me from getting one immediately is the fact that the iPad hasn't officially launched in India (I can go out and buy one at a premium and without a warranty, and I would too, if it wasn't for annoying things like sanity getting in the way.)

I suspect I'll queue up with a bunch of fanboys on the launch date. Can someone recommend a decent alternative and spare me the humiliation?

I don't have much say here but $0.02:

I don't care for over-enthusiastic moderators going around censoring stuff.

The guy who made those posts may have made his point in a crude manner but it's the best advice I've seen you guys get. It's not easy swimming against the tide and it sucks that any form of dissent is immediately censored.

While you're at it, why don't you delete tomos's post (he did use the word 'harsh'), and this one too?

I dim the room lights and walk around the PC a few times chanting, trying to get a "feel" for the archive's contents so I can mentally decompress them. If that doesn't work out, I use Winrar.

PVD has lost its charm for me since the author cursorily got rid of the 'grid view' feature.
That and the fact that it's a one man show with few (if any) people there to update essential plugins like 'IMDB import' if the author abandons the program someday.

I have worked out a way to export the Collectorz database to PVD, so I'll give it another shot if the author ever brings grid view back. There really isn't any 'best' program in this category, IMO. There are a few good ones and all of those have their own gaping flaws. And, if I understand correctly, any program that gets too popular in this category is eventually going to have to pay up or contend with IMDB's legal team.

I would have to set up shared folders for that to work though wouldn't I?

I have simple file sharing disabled. The root drives have access permissions assigned to my login. But when I check the subfolder permissions within those drives the folders are not shared. File sharing has always been a bit of a grey area for me.  :-[

I use Microsoft's SyncToy for this. I haven't updated to the latest version but the one I use [1.4.0.0] doesn't have any scheduling capability, so you'll have to use Task Scheduler or some other app for scheduling.

I loved District 9! Loved the grittiness and realism... not often seen in this genre.

I remember being blown away the first time I viewed The Usual Suspects, the last scene gave me goosebumps then.

Another movie that had a big impact on me... possibly the creepiest flick I've seen after The Exorcist (and it doesn't even fall into the horror genre) is David Lynch's Mulholland Dr.

This is a quest I gave up on long back. The closest I got to succeeding was with Google Desktop Search, it worked most of the time, but there was some delay between loading a page and the content showing up in the search results, IIRC. I dropped the program because it wasn't 100% reliable.
The later releases may work better. If you give it a try, do let us know how it goes.

Edit: I use Firefox, YMMV if you're on another browser.

Very annoying! And the monkeys hired by the cable company need to justify their salaries so they keep experimenting with the firmware and adding redundant features that make a sluggish box even slower. Their latest achievement is doubling the recording hours on the STB by using heavier compression which ends up compromising the clarity of the recording.

It's 1979. An 8 year old boy who thinks Abba, Boney M and some cutesy pop songs comprise the world's entire music collection is being looked after by a teenaged friend. The teen drags the kid along to a friends house. It's night, the house lights are switched off and a bunch of kids are dancing to blaring music that sounds completely alien to the kid. It's nothing like he's ever heard before, it's the best f***ing thing he's ever heard and he realizes how COOL, cool can be. What he doesn't realize is he's just had his first taste of electronic music - the man behind the music, 30 years ahead of his time... an Italian, Giorgio Moroder. Decades later, very few know him... (the man is now 70 and he looked like a mustache pete even in his prime) but very few have escaped the music he influenced... from fly-by-night electropop bands to giants like The Chemical Bros.

Presenting, for your listening (but certainly NOT viewing) pleasure... Mr.Giorgio Moroder...

Jim,
Do give WinOrganizer a try, if you haven't already. I've found it to be the best PIM for my needs and it has an excellent contacts module integrated - you can attach files and alarms to contacts.

I think the pledge pages would be fun to read if they'd contain a little personal information about the authors; to the extent each author is comfortable, of course. Things I can think of to make the page interesting: a snapshot of the author, some kind of flowchart/diagram that describes the project (doesn't really have to be serious, can be a little whacky/creative as long as it gets the gist across), an audio pitch by the author (Alright, I just dropped that in coz I really enjoyed and miss the DC podcasts.) Bottomline: I think the event needs to build on the enthusiasm/ fun factor before the d-word is mentioned!

Just my $0.02 (not accounting for inflation.)

Living Room / Re: Ergonomic mouse and keyboard
« Last post by nosh on April 29, 2010, 10:10 AM »
I have been using Microsoft's Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 for some months and absolutely love it.

The only disadvantage: there may be a small learning curve involved for a touch typist because of its contours.

The Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Desktop 7000 bundles the wireless version of this keyboard with a mouse that feels too much like holding a potato for me to like it.  :)
