Find And Run Robot / Re: LifeHacker vote, stage 2, final voting
« Last post by TucknDar on May 23, 2008, 06:54 AM »
Voted. One thing that strikes me about FARR is that I in no way feel even remotely interested in what other launchers have to offer.

Agree on the "Top, Best, etc." stuff already said, btw.
577
Wow, excellent post! Great reference, and a good starting point for digging deeper into the manual.
578
the one really really annoying thing about FARR options is that when it looses focus you loose it !
IMHO, it should be a completely different window with save, apply and cancel buttons

in my experience the new options dialog of directory opus 9 is amazing
one should try it to believe it (especially the filtering...)
Agree with the save/apply/cancel buttons, and how about a screenshot of the dopus9 dialog?

One suggestion about the options (this was first brought up by icfu some time ago) is to make the options dialog more streamlined. The tabbed interface looks a bit confusing and is not very intuitive IMO. Like icfu suggested would be better with a "list" of sections on the left and the options under each section on the right.

Something like these examples:

Total Commander (Total Commander 32 bit international version, file manager replacement for Windows) [TOTALCMD.EXE] Screenshot - 21.05.2008 , 17_22_53.png SyncBackSE [syncbackse.exe] Screenshot - 21.05.2008 , 17_24_24.png PhraseExpress [phraseexpress.exe] Screenshot - 21.05.2008 , 17_25_10.png

edit: Guess that was a little OT, but not farr... 'scuse the pun :-[

I'd vote for FARR if I was signed up... maybe I'll do that later.

Tuckndar had success cleaning his fan (dust)
about the temperature again, not that anyones interested, I'm sure... uh, well I think I've got some dust in the fans. Thanks for your mentioning this, or I probably wouldn't've dug around so much. Now I know that the dust can be easily removed from my laptop :)

back to topic... :-[
you could always pm him or continue off-topic in that thread :P ;D (says me, off-topic :-[ )
Removing the dust made a huge difference on the CPU temp. My laptop was running at about 55C idle, but after I got the dust out of the fan it's now steady at 40C idle. I suck at math, but I believe that's 22% cooler!
582
PhraseExpress doesn't do that now, though. Just tried ;)

that price isn't too bad either. I'll give it a spin, maybe it's worth it. Thanks again!

General Software Discussion / Software to create crosswords?
« Last post by TucknDar on May 19, 2008, 02:11 PM »
I'm going to create a couple of crossword puzzles for educational use (kids) and would like to know if anyone here has any experience with a decent piece of software for such a task?

Preferably free software, but I'd consider something inexpensive as well, ie. < $20(ish)...

I've googled a bit, obviously, but most of my findings are either too expensive for my use or they don't seem very good.

Any help is much appreciated!

WHY does the installer need admin rights?

587
did you look in the Website-Watcher forums? Developer Martin Aignesberger is usually quick to respond there.
588
I'd love to see something similar to InstantNavigator for OneNote, which searches for specific notes. It behaves much like FARR, but I'd obviously prefer doing this through FARR and not run another app just for this.

oh lord i think we can all see where this is going.
My 9th sense tells me that someone will sign up to this board and answer this question with a link to a commercial software product.

Living Room / Re: Options to use Donation Credits to purchase stuff

I fear that letting people "buy" these things would diminish their significance as a gift.
That's a fair point, which I agree with. Maybe I should just remember to send some credits to members writing helpful, fun or interesting posts. I rarely do that, but it's certainly a nice way to spend the credits.

Yeah, some DC-things would be cool. I'd like something simple, such as a keyring, a coaster or something like that. Oh, and since I can't see myself winning a DC coffee mug anytime soon, I'd gladly spend my DC credits on that :)

Good idea, IMO.

Would be interesting to know these utilities' use of resources. nnCron has a very low memory footprint, but how about the other ones mentioned here?
595
Funny you should ask, I'm currently working on a review of nnCron. There are two versions, a shareware one and a LITE version (free). I've used the free one for about a year but recently switched to the full version.

You'll find it here: http://nncron.ru/

nnCron is an advanced and very powerful scheduler, scripting tool and automation manager. nnCron is very small in size (900k), but its capabilities are truly colossal. Besides possessing the traditional scheduler features (starting programs, displaying reminder messages and opening documents at specified time), nnCron also can:
  • start any program as a service
  • run tasks as if they were started by specified user
  • handle and restart so called missed tasks and reminders
  • shut down and hibernate the computer or put it into sleep mode at a specified time
  • "wake up" the computer in order to run a task
  • display, hide, close, kill, minimize, maximize and hide specified windows to system tray
  • display messages on screen and write them in a log file
  • work with clipboard, files and registry
  • emulate keyboard input and mouse activities
  • dial and hang up
  • use the system speaker to make beeps of specified length and frequency
  • play audio files
  • sync system time
  • assign a specified priority to a process
  • terminate any running process
  • restart automatically after fatal errors
  • keep track of files, flags, windows, processes, mouse activities, periods of idle time, keyboard shortcuts, getting online/off line, insertion of disk in a drive, presence of a host in network (ping), amount of free space on a disk, etc., etc.

I think it's an excellent scheduler, and it does everything I want it to so far :) I should get back to writing the review.....

I see you want one for XP, but still, to anyone else: NNCRON DOES NOT CURRENTLY WORK ON VISTA, BUT THE COMPANY HAS A WORKING BETA THAT DOES!

I admit my ignorance in exactly what this is used for, but I don't understand why that sounds brave. That's just 12MB. I have ~2,000MB RAM on this machine. Most people these days have at least 512MB if not 1GB of RAM.

On my system, Firefox often takes up around 150MB by itself. So that's why I think 12MB is nothing.
I'm with you there, Deozaan. Could someone please explain why/if 12288 is so brave in terms that even I can understand :-[

I changed my setting to 4096 which reduced this problem to "almost zero", but I've seen the dreaded message once or twice since, although nothing like before. Any point in setting 12288?

As a true freeware, Fast Explorer is truly limited to the amount of author's free time :)
-Alex Yakovlev (May 02, 2008, 01:39 PM)
:) Absolutely. I wouldn't expect it any other way! Thanks for noting my requests!
598
Welcome to the site, Alex!

I've got a couple of requests: Preview the context menu and ability to rearrange the order of items in the context menu (if possible).

Thanks for the great tool! TBH I had forgot about Fast Explorer and I'm delighted it's still in active development! The Nirsoft utilities with similar capabilities are excellent, too, but I think Fast Explorer will be my choice for tweaking my context menus :)
599
here is the original ContextMenu Commander thread. mouser, i'm quite sad that the CMC project won't be taking off but i'll be taking it philosophically that this means you'll have time for other projects. ;)
My thoughts exactly

Congrats to f0dder! I knew it needed a good chicken-joke to win it ;) Since it's a ripoff, I expect to take a sip of coffee from your mug if there's ever a Northern Europe/Scandinavian get-together!

Oh, and remember to post a picture of you with the mug once you get it
