Screenshot Captor / Re: Capturing Scrolling Pages
« Last post by mouser on August 10, 2015, 11:16 PM »
What I have not been able to figure out how to do is to capture just the browser web page window without the Firefox tabs and toolbars appearing at the top of each scrolled page.

the real trick to this is not to worry about it.  after SC performs its scrolling and capturing, it has a button you push to detect where the real content is and crop out the rest.

The real challenge is to get scrolling captures in other applications besides browsers.  It's so hard to get consistent results with anything.  I guess that may be because each program works differently in one way or another and its hard to make a universal tool that can deal with every contingency.

that's why i finally added a "manual" method into SC's scrolling capture.  once you get used to the way it works, it's hard to go wrong with it.

New update:
After the forum upgrade I will begin the site migration to a CMS.
I had previously said the decision was made to use Drupal.  I think that idea is canceled.

I'm now looking hard at Joomla...
I haven't looked under the hood much, but so far i'm very impressed with the gui and how clean the default stuff is.  Seems like Joomla has come a long way since I first looked at it many years ago.

Browser addons have a much easier job of capturing a scrolling image from a browser just by nature of the fact that they are integrated with the browser -- they can tell the browser what to do and have easy access to getting exactly the window contents, etc.

Have you tried the new Screenshot Captor "manual" scrolling capture method? It takes a few more clicks but once you get used to it the procedure is pretty straightforward and the results are predictable.

Regardless, i don't think there is any shame in using a browser addon/plugin to capture scrolling web pages, and use a screenshot tool in other cases.

right ok so your last image helps answer:
One thing I am wondering if SC can do - can you take an image using the region that's bigger than the dialog box, and then have SC automatically trim out the whitespace until it hits the borders, and then save only that as the screenshot? I always take the shot on white. That would work around the problem.

sc will do exactly this -- but what you are seeing is a side effect of CHILD windows on top of their parents -- this messes up SC's attempt to capture background transparency.

so the trick in such cases is to move that modal child window off of the main parent window before capture.

assuming you are following my logic, give that a try and let me know how it works.

i would have thought that one of the active-window capture modes should be smart enough to not do that cropping.

exactly as you said, i used the expand canvas feature.

usually what i do is like this: i expand the canvas a LOT, more than i will need,
then after i add all the text i want, i crop the image to get rid of the extra space.

Note: some of the apps i'm using i'm just using because i'm too lazy to move to something better, so don't take my choices as my recommendations for best tools.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Hotkey or Alias to open FARR options window?
« Last post by mouser on August 09, 2015, 10:24 PM »
to fix a local help file that opens as blank, right click on the chm file to show file properties and find the UNBLOCK button; the problem is that windows sometimes marks downloaded help file as unsecure.

ps.
I thought there was a hotkey to open options from main window (Ctrl+O) but that seems to not work unless you are in the results list, so that may be considered a bug.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: reording groups
« Last post by mouser on August 09, 2015, 09:29 AM »
Hi Herchi --
sorry for the delayed reply.

You can change the order of groups, but it's a little weird because of the fact that groups are stored in a database.

You can drag and drop to put one group as a child of another, etc.

But to change ordering, you have to EDIT the group (right-click choose edit) and then adjust the "Display Order Weight".  The lower the value, the earlier it will display with its siblings.

By the way, it's been decided -- the official forum upgrade will take place on September 1st.

let me suggest that this advice:
So, long story short: When upgrading a similar RST equipped PC, make images of your entire harddrive before attempting the in-place upgrade!

be turned into:
When upgrading a pc, make images of your entire hard drive first.

FARR should run fine on windows 10 -- it does here too.

Perhaps it's a plugin issue? Unfortunately uninstalling will not remove things like plugins that were installed after the main installer.
What you could do is delete the plugins folder and the FindAndRunRobot directory under MyDocuments\DonationCoder\FindAndRunRobot
That should give you a clean install.

Amazing true crime book.  Robert Lindsey also wrote the book "The Falcon and the Snowman" which blew my mind as a teenager.

It was my intent to pay for the hardware and shipping charges.. But I have realized that I really can't afford to spend money on non-essentials at the moment, so let's table the idea for now, and return to it when the grass is greener.

I think the root of your issue is explained by tomos' post.
The area behind the shadow is actually treated by Screenshot Captor as TRANSPARENT -- that is, it will show the color of whatever is behind the image.

So when you are viewing the image inside Firefox, it is *FIREFOX* which has decided to render transparent images as if they were on a white background.  If you choose a different image viewer, like Irfanview, you may see that background area treated as BLACK.  Still others may attempt to show you that the region is transparent by using a checkerboard pattern -- such as a painting program.

Now, if you want to FORCE the background to be a certain shade, you can set the canvas color to whatever you want, and then before you save it, choose to FLATTEN the background transparency from the Objects menu in screenshot captor.  This will remove any transparency and flatten the shadow as if the background color was the set canvas color -- if that makes sense.

it's also true that if you save the image in a format that does not support transparency (jpg, bmp) any transparent background will be merged into the canvas background color.

I've underlined the important bit in my original message.  :P

Well, you'll only be able to really test it on a https accessed host, and the DC test site doesn't have https, afaics.
agreed about testing the https part of things -- but one can still check out the basic new approach to embedding the videos, which should work for everyone.
