Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Locate 3.0 - great *FAST* HD search tool!

Let me point you to http://fileforum.bet.../detail/1044509669/1 (or http://www.locate32.net/). The latest version (stable beta) includes a "Find as you type" option, which is great in combination with all the existing features!

Less than 2 million here, ok for me. :D

To quote a well-known movie: "Horror and moral terror are your friends. If they are not then they are enemies to be feared." Same with germs! 8)

f0dder is right. Making your first post on this site about your own program...?

As "ashisoftdf" you also 'reviewed' your own program on http://fileforum.bet..._Finder/1089135988/1:
I really like Duplicate Finder. An especially nice touch was when it told me that I was deleting all copies of a file. I tried a few other duplicate file finders and hated them.

I'm still totally happy with DoubleKiller Pro, you might want to re-think your marketing approach.

Ok, I just tried "Grab selected Region" (love the pixel counter!) and it worked perfectly, no border was added there.

Screenshot Captor / SC v2.37.03: full-screen captures too big: one-pixel border
« Last post by brotherS on January 12, 2008, 09:44 AM »
Hi,

when I just did a few full-screen captures (pressed F11 in Internet Explorer to capture all of the visible area, I didn't need what's below), I found out that SC always captured the screen in 1282 x 1026 instead of my 1280 x 1024 screen resolution. Looks like SC added a white one-pixel border to every side of the capture.

I also found out that my SC installation wasn't the latest version, but updating it to the v2.37.03 didn't change this.

I also checked the options (which by the way are called "Preferences" in the tray icon menu, and "Options" in the options window that pops up), but the "On Capture/Add Border to Image" option isn't enabled.

It's not directly possible, unless you can persuade the user to install an activeX control, because...

In order to dial the phone, you need access to a Modem. The modem dials the number, and then the user is told to pick up the phone, at which point, the user would hang up. Old programs which would do this (and I can't remember any off the top of my head) would use this sort of sequence.

1) Do you want to dial the number?
2) User clicks "Yes"
3) Open Serial port (to Modem), send characters AT (response OK), AT DT 0123456789012
4) Pick up the phone
5) After a specified delay, hang up the modem

In order to get access to the modem, you'd need either an activex control or a java app. I don't know enough about either to do this!

Alternatively, there are services (which I can't find with a simple google search right now - but I'm sure if you're creative you'll find them), where a third party server dials the user and the business and then connects the two lines together. The third way is to take that in-house, and make it so that the user enters their phone number into a form, that goes into a queue at the web site, which is then reeled off to the PBX at the webserver end.

Lastly, you could use a VoIP solution like Asterisk, and then establish SIP connections in between either the business and the user, or between two users, well, let's just say with VoIP, the world is your mollusc.

Jon
Hi JonTheNiceGuy and welcome to the site!

Using an additional modem might be a solution. Using a service that connects the two lines together is not that good because then the usage of (land line) phone flat rates wouldn't be possible.

On the other hand, going totally VoIP *might* make sense if the price per call is ok because you just need a headset and no external hardware.

Thanks for your answers. They don't exactly answer my questions, but I already know more than before now.  ;)

General Software Discussion / could a web application dial your phone for you?
« Last post by brotherS on January 01, 2008, 05:39 PM »
Hi and a happy new year!  :)

A technical question: considering the amount of web-based apps, is it possible for a website/web-based application to dial your (landline) phone for you? I bet it's possible with PC-based phones (*), but what about regular phones that are not connected to a PC?

Maybe there are such phones available already, I just don't know...  8)

*I'm also interested in such hardware solutions - not hardware that only uses services like Skype though.

i can advise to use replay media catcher to capture all kind of stream audio it's cool  :D
Please post URLs for widely unknown programs if possible :)
It's not on http://fileforum.betanews.com/ (as I said above that's often a bad sign), found it on http://www.applian.c...ia-catcher/index.php - no freeware.

General Software Discussion / Re: TrueCrypt - FAT32/NTFS
« Last post by brotherS on December 25, 2007, 12:03 PM »
Are you using "filesystem in a file" with TrueCrypt, or do you use direct partition encryption?
The latter.

Whatever the case, as long as the TrueCrypt volume is formatted NTFS, it should have support for big files. But if you're using "filesystem in a file" and the container is on a FAT32 formatted drive, well... :). Anyway, no need to format, use "convert x: /FS:NTFS".
I just tried that (after a backup 8)) and got the message that it already is NTFS.

So I'll just live with the fact that TrueCrypt reports it as FAT32 before I mount it (as NTFS), should be OK. :-)

Thanks!

The drive is formatted FAT32, the truecrypt drive is NTFS.

TrueCrypt does not change the underlying file system.  Even TrueCrypt cannot see a partition or drive until it is mounted, it only sees the underlying file system, in your case, FAT32.

The drive you purchased was preformatted FAT32.  TrueCrypt wrote data on the FAT32 drive.  When mounted this is a NTFS drive.  When not mounted only information about the underlying file system, FAT32,  is available.
Ah, I see! So I would have to format the drive and start from scratch to have full NTFS support for big files on the TrueCrypt-formatted partition?

It sounds... strange. But no idea, really. Can you post some screenshots of compmgmt.msc/disk management, and the right-click properties etc?
Could do, but not much to see there... and compmgmt.msc/disk management shows nothing because it's an external HD.

General Software Discussion / TrueCrypt - FAT32/NTFS
« Last post by brotherS on December 18, 2007, 03:30 PM »
Hi,

I bought another external HD and formatted it NTFS (at least I'm very sure I did) within TrueCrypt. Strangely though, in TrueCrypt's "Select Device" window, it's now shown as FAT32 (all other HDs/partitions are shown as NTFS). Even more strange: when I right-click the mounted HD in the Windows Explorer and check its properties, Windows says it's NTFS.

Huh?

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Do this First.
« Last post by brotherS on December 10, 2007, 08:26 AM »
If you're anything like me, the first thing you do when you start the computer is to check your emails and feeds. An hour or two later, you might get something else done, if you remember what you intended to do in the first place.  :-[
I suggest you do this:
  • buy and read Getting Things Done (see amazon.com)
  • do NOT check emails and feeds first thing in the morning/when you turn on the PC
  • disable "check emails every x minutes" and other tools that frequently show you your new emails

Yes, it's not totally easy to get used to the changes, and yes, you'll get a lot done.

"Only as needed" is defined as once every 2-3 weeks when things start going wrong and I can't do what I want, such as getting Paintshop Pro to open.
Same here. I can get my Windows 2000 to run for a maximum of about 4 to 6 weeks, then things tend to get ugly. Sometimes even a BSOD.

I think this goes beyond a simple AHK script... if you want to let kids use the internet it's probably best to go with a 'nanny' tool of some kind. Never used or tested any, but you should be able to find reviews online.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Locate 3.0 - great *FAST* HD search tool!
« Last post by brotherS on November 30, 2007, 01:22 PM »
I've used Locate32 and really liked it but then I tried File Tracer, just out of curiosity. Locate is a more refined program - far better GUI, way more customizable. I have to say though, when it comes to sheer power and low resource consumption File Tracer is God! Locate pushed my CPU to 40% and beyond whenever it indexed the drives.
Strange, I just had Locate update one DB and CPU usage never went above 10%, most of the time it was more like 4%.

Locate consistently sat at 1.5% CPU in my case even when it was not doing a thing.
That's strange too, Locate here is idling at 0% and jumps to 2% now and then. No idea why, might be a bug.

You could post your problems at the new forum @ http://www.locate32.net/forum

Does anybody use Locate alongside any of the content search engines such as GDS? I like the content search but love the speed of Locate. Any problems running both?
No problem.

Great, looking forward to that.

You also might want to make "Exit" the last option in the right-click menu (when clicking the tray icon), the way other programs display it.

Hi,

maybe such a tool (or a vaguely similar one) already exists, but I don't know it and couldn't find one.

My idea: a simple tool with 2 settings:
- number of intervals
- duration each in seconds

It would then just display something on the screen (in a way that's visible from a distance, so maybe by using 50% of the screen size) that alternates every [duration each in seconds], as often as wanted ([number of intervals]).

Another option could be a sound being played every [duration each in seconds] in addition to what's on the screen, so that it works with exercises where one can't face the PC too.

Would love such a tool!

PS: 30 pushups, anyone? (Not me [yet?]) 8)

Yeah, I like the latest version too! :-) And remember, when you use it, send skrommel a few bucks/DCredits if you can afford to do that.

Please edit your post and create a new post for the second IDEA. It's kinda hard to keep track/manage if there's more than one idea in a post.
