General Software Discussion / Re: Convert PDF to DOC in a special way...
« Last post by tomos on December 04, 2012, 04:18 AM »
Maybe Universal Document Converter 5.5 would help(compatible w/Office 2013) to convert pdf into image files(multiple pages will be correctly handled if choose tiff format, note that color tiff files are usually large size, if black n white tiff files sizes are smaller):

http://www.print-driver.com/overview/

I can print to multi-page Tiff with PDFCreator (which I think Contro uses as well)
http://sourceforge.n...projects/pdfcreator/

Can one successfully bring a multi-page tiff into a word processor?

Your software is very good, it would be amazing with a built in screenshot upload to various image hosting websites specially photobucket picasa etc. currently you need to install another software to do that, please add this feature. :-*

hi hushz,
have you looked at Preferences - go to Auto-uploading
I havent used it myself so cant tell you any more about it, but it's there ;-)

(There are a couple of threads about it here if you do a search. Possibly some info in the help file too, but that might not be up-to-date)

Can think of using it as 'countdown' for my projects, which I generally miss.

I was thinking along these lines as well.
With that in mind, would it be possible to make it like a resizeable toolbar that you could drag the corner and end up e.g. with 1x2 or 2x4 or 1x4 format

Screenshot - 12_3_2012 , 3_41_41 AM - cap 00096_MOD.gif

you could even have it like the new docking auto-hide SC "Quick Capture Bar" (could you reuse the code?)

- Does anyone see anything odd in that extract ?

I dont see anything odd in it -
just the commonly used emotional blackmail approach to why-you-should-support-this.

I wouldnt mind, it almost sounds reasonable to me - they just want to see who you emailed, not what (content) you emailed. But when they start off with the emotional blackmail, alarm bells go off.

@dr_andus
I cross posted that to the Surface RT thread
https://www.donation....msg308820#msg308820

I'm not feeling very positive myself - been thinking most of the problems with 8 are relatively minor (in spite of their big effect) yet they didnt fix them.
Didnt bother fixing them? (Why?)
Or things were maybe too hectic for them to get their act together.

SP1 will be a clue I guess - hopefully something positive.

General Software Discussion / Re: A month with my Surface RT
« Last post by tomos on December 01, 2012, 03:22 PM »
thought I'd cross-post this from the "Are you going to wait for Windows 9?" thread, as it's mainly about the Surface:

I hope MS will be still around to launch Win9 because at the moment things are not looking good. Some of their strategies seem decidedly amateurish. Take for example the advertising that focuses on the fact that Surface comes with a kickstand. Seriously? That's the most important thing about it?? And who came up with that amazing name, "Surface"?

Then take the ever-increasing options for the consumer. Do I buy Win8 or WinRT, Metro, or Win8 Pro? Do I need a keyboard for an extra $100 or not? Do I buy an MS manufactured device or one from another manufacturer? Which chipset is better, ARM or Intel? Can I run my Win7 software on the Surface or not? And why should I pay $200-300 more for this than the alternatives (incl. laptops)?

Confused customers don't buy. It's just so much simpler to go for the latest iPad and not have to deal with any of this nonsense.

Take e.g. this:
The 64GB Windows 8 Pro running Intel will be priced $899 and excludes the touch cover, which retails for around $100.

Compare that to the 64GB iPad from Apple, which is priced at $699. The Android-powered 64GB Samsung Galaxy Tab, meanwhile, comes in at around $889, no keypad required.

The problem for Microsoft here is that the keypad is essential on the Windows 8 Pro edition, because – as Microsoft points out in the supporting blog – Windows 8 Pro will run your existing Windows 7 apps, and those apps won’t be built for touch.

This is not MS-bashing on my part. I genuinely want them to succeed because I've invested into this relationship and I love my software on Win7. But this is increasingly looking desperate. Ballmer has looked like a disaster for quite some time. There must be something seriously wrong with their internal processes if they are not able to bring in more talented managers than the current ones who are confusing customers.

If they would simply allow you to choose your windows manager (like you can with Linux) ...

Can you explain "windows manager" to those of us who have no linux experience - or are just plain ignorant about it :-)

I use Gridmove and MoveIt, but I think you mean something else (?)
bump
do you mean like a shell?

General Software Discussion / Re: Keyboard shortcut of the day

thanks nudone and Barney

Ctrl+Shift+Z is very nice -
especially in combination with Ctrl+Z if you want to toggle undo/redo to find the ideal undo moment.

I'll consider it a bit.
5242
Regarding printing big, I think I can use a program called The Rasterbater or another called Poster Forge to do that.
that's an option too,
but -
(I think I said this above but I will emphasise!)

You're probably going to create a vector drwaing.
If you do create a vector:

  • you can scale it to *any* size (set page size; enlarge)
  • you will lose *no* quality in the enlargement
  • you can easily create a vector PDF with (I think) any of the common PDF printers (simply print to PDF)

compare that with messing around with enlarging bitmaps:
huge file sizes, and no sharp print at the end...

Then printing - here's the Adobe Reader X print dialogue:

Screenshot - 2012-12-01 , 16_48_06.png

the printer selected is A4 - you can see 'tile' options under 'Poster' and that the print-preview is automatically divided into whatever your maximum page size is.

PS I promise I'll shut up about that now :-[ :D

^ quotes got confused there (I didnt say that - it's good to know though!)

Re the remapping, sure I could do something that direction. I just thought (hoped) there might be an alternative hotkey for Ctrl+z - like with Shift+Ins etc for Copy etc.
Thanks!

XYPlorer can do it all right:
By default, if you left click on a thumbnail, it will display at full size. This makes it difficult to drag! Go to:
menu >Tools >Configuration >Thumbnails >Turn off: popup image on mouse down (bottom of window).
Then try it as instructed above and it works fine.

someone else might have other ideas too.

XYplorer file manager has this feature -
Menu >Tools >Customise List >Manual Sorting
then
drag n drop to sort.

I havent used it in a while - it doesn't seem to work with large thumbnails, but does work with the details-with-[small]-thumbnail view.

PS welcome to the forum :)

« Last post by tomos on November 30, 2012, 06:24 PM »
thanks for the update Jim

# I get a tray-popup after 30 seconds idle time [after two minutes inactivity it automatically stops the timer] - this is too soon imo, I find it pops up more often than I want and considering the (default?) two min limit on inactivity I think it would be better at the half-way (one minute) mark
Yeah i was always wondering about this, i just kind of got used to it personally, how about at the 75% mark?

at this stage, someone is either working (probably reading a text) -or they've gone on a break. In either scenario any popup is fairly irrelevant, so I think the 75% mark would be good. (If taskbar is on autohide, it's fairly intrusive - taskbar pops up with the popup.)

minor notes from today so far:
# close to tray should be default setting for an app like this imo
Hmm, I'll need more feedback to justify changing the default.

well I think it's that - or add a minimise button (probably with minimise to tray?). I suspect the majority of people will not want an app on-top. But even if I'm wrong there, I think there should be some option out-of-the-box to minimise, or make the on-top window disappear.

^ Gotcha, thanks.

I'm using InfoQube
From what I've heard InfoQube users saying, it's too complicated for me!  Expensive, too, if you have to pay the full price.

yeah, it does need some work to make it more user friendly.
I cant compare it to many apps. Lets see, related: I have used Surfulater and Evernote. It is more complex - but that does also mean (in this case) that there is much more flexibility/capability. You dont have to get into (most of that) complexity unless you need it. TBH, I dont very much - I'm a *fairly* basic user of the majority of software I use, including IQ.

I started using it for other things (work: tracking job/file status) but did get a lot of help with that (great trade off: learn a complex programme when in beta - you get a huge amount of help setting it up). Once I got it set up -with that help- I just use it. So, I guess I should say that aspects that I use could be called advanced ;-)

For web content *for me* it's mostly a case of being a dumping ground and then search. I can though -very easily- sort in (multiple) hierarchies (also multiple times in the same hierarchy), and show in multiple pages/grids/views. Inbuilt tagging is weak but if you learn filtering it's more or less the same. Search suffices too - either way though - you dont (currently) get that overview of tags.

Re "The Price" -I'm not sure what that is - it's still in beta. I have donated, that will go towards my license when it is released.

PS I am/was a big fan of Surfulator - with IQ I just happen to have an app that kind of covers everything, so I use that ;-)
There are pros and cons to using multiple apps for various uses (maybe they're just segregated by theme/topic even) - or using a single app for multiple uses.
