I'm not sure.  The wording doesn't say anything about an expiration for the offer. Their main competition is Usenet Explorer which is still $35. My speculation would be they are trying to stimulate registrations instead of everyone waiting for v. 6 to be released.  But that's just a guess. It's been $35 for a long time.

Even though if you register for 5 you can get 6 no charge I think the tendency is for people to wait for 6.  They can to the 10 day trial on the version they'll actually be using that way.

6 is a major update with data format changes(the spool changed again) and the window library, even though the gui itself looks similar to 5, is a new ballgame. People may be doing the old wait and see.

I actually haven't a clue what the difference is.

However as the last two lines bear no resemblance to a pun ... We have now successfully managed to pull our tangent off-point.

I see the deal has changed to $15.

Right now I'm using v. 6 Beta 14:
http://www.newsbin.com/beta.php

I think you have to be a registered user of 5.x.

I've been updating the 6 betas right along.  With 14 most of the glitches are cosmetic.  A few nits here and there, but it's stable enough I'm using it as my primary binary newsreader.

One thing I didn't like about 5.x, I liked to have the groups list on the left and the posts list on the right.  But having the groups list open meant I really had to use the horizontal scrollbar to have a large enough area for the subject line.

With v. 6 I can dock the groups list next to the posts list vertical scrollbar on the right and size it so it fits in the window, kind of floating above the posts list.  Plenty of room for subject line and other info with no horizontal scrollbar.

FolderCache 5.5.0.0 Change tiling functions to use Windows Tile Windows API.  It's just too much faster to ignore.

The exception is pressing Side By Side Button with only one folder.  This will put 2 views of the same folder side by side vertically on the desktop "manually." No other windows will be moved.

The MaxSideBySide .ini file option is used to determine if horizontal or vertical tiling should be used.  Set it to 0 to always use horizontal tiling(except in 2 views of single folder) or a high number to always use vertical tiling.  A number between as a trigger point which to choose. In any case the Windows API will try to set things up so all windows can be seen in the case of many windows open on the desktop.

The manual positioning for lots of windows is just too slow. It's ok for a couple of folders but 4 and higher you really start to forget why you're opening the folders. :)

mikiem,
thank you for such a detailed post.

i'll note that i have had a third-party blank ink cartridge leak in my canon printer once.

I never had a real leak problem.  I did notice that the refab cartridges can vary as to removing the tape before insertion.  On some if you pull off the tape it loses the vacuum and ink starts making its way out the cartridge before you can get it into place. I think I remember having good luck disregarding the instructions and snapping the thing in before pulling the tape off the top.

Could be an incorrect printing on the instruction, or a disgruntled current employee at the refab mill. :)

FolderCache 5.4.0.0  Added .ini file option MaxSideBySide.  If more than this number of folders are opened with Side By Side Button, they will be tiled horizontally via Windows API.  MaxSideBySide number or less will be placed side by side vertically.

The default setting is 3.  It's one way to avoid snaring application windows in the WinAPI Tile action.  Run 5.4 once and close it.  Then you can edit the .ini file to set the value.

General Software Discussion / Re: FolderCache 5.3.0.0
« Last post by MilesAhead on May 20, 2011, 03:41 PM »
FolderCache 5.3.0.0 Updated Side By Side Button behavior so that it adds folders from the Input Line and Stack.  Use discretion as there is now no limit on the number of folders. If the total is greater than 2, Windows Tile API will be called after they are all open on the desktop.  Note also that non Explorer windows may be caught up in the Tiling.

Another feature is if a single folder is selected or typed in the Input Line, Side By Side will show 2 views of the same folder side by side vertically on the desktop.

The opening, sizing, and moving can be a bit slow. I would use Side By Side when you expect to do multiple drag & drop operations.  Or if you are too lazy to move the windows yourself, like me. :)

edit:

Also fixed a bug where folders selected in the ListBox were not cleared after pressing Stack Selected Button.

FolderCache 5.1.0.0 Updated readme file and help file.  Added code to Side By Side function.  If the number of folders is greater than 3, a Windows API is then called to tile them. 5 tall skinny folders side by side ain't that great.  With this tile function it's a bit more sane. :)
(But not too sane.)

FolderCache 5.0.0.0 Added a Side By Side Button to the PopUp Window. You can highlight from 2 to 5 folders in the ListBox, then hit Side By Side to tile them across the desktop work area. Any folder name on the Input Line or already in the Stack is ignored. Just works on the List Selections.

More than 5 and they are too skinny.  Also if you selected a folder that's already open it's not likely to launch and tile.  I just use ShellExecute on the folder name rather than opening Explorer as a separate process.  It can make it convenient to drag & drop across a few folders.

In any case I put time-outs on the window title matching so it shouldn't hang if there's an error.  You may notice a wait of a few seconds as it hopes for a window that ain't gonna' show. :)

Sorry to keep doing follow-ups. But when I see a good idea I like to try to add variations or features.

I added a couple more hotkeys with sort of a fake Snap functionality.  Unlike Windows7 where you hit Winkey Left Arrow to put the active window on the left half of the screen, here you use RWinKey Left Arrow and hit a letter to open an Explorer window for that drive on the left half of the screen.  Also you can hit RWinKey Up Arrow and 2 letters to put up 2 drives side by side. They can be the same letter to allow 2 views of C: as example.

It's good for a couple of quick drag & drops.  Complicated file maintenance and you may as well bring up a file manager.  But this snaps up quickly.

The latest version can be downloaded here:
http://www.favessoft.com/hotkeys.html

I called it KeyDrive. I included source and custom icon as well as .exe file. See the About box for hotkeys.

Thanks to App for the inspiration and working code.

There are many editors that can use either regular expressions as Jibz noted, or their own symbolic pattern characters, that can replace pattern with text or include the pattern in the replacement.  Although you tend to encounter them more on other OS.  Windows freeware editors tend to be more limited.

You may want to try one of the Windows ports of vi. That editor can do some amazing things in command mode if you don't mind jumping in and out of edit mode.  Can make you a bit schizoid but if you are really into complicated editing you may not mind. :)

I never got really adept at vi but when I was playing with Linux a lot I used it enough to start to see the versatility.

Actually I've found the Alt-NumberPadSub function of Home Folder will work with a hotkey that pops up an about box or displays a window.

Say you have a hotkey tray app that displays an about box that doesn't tell you the current hotkey.  Just copyright or web site info.  While that about box is the active window, Alt-NumberPadMinus will pop up the input box.  Then you can just close the about box, and type in your note.  At least it's something associated with the program where you don't have to open a text file of notes to search.

After messing around I decided staying away from the mouse may be better.
This seems like a simple approach.  You may want to stick in an #IfWinActive
but I don't use Control-UpArrow much that I can remember. With calls to
EmptyWorkingSet it hangs in the tray at around 350 KB.

Edit: added an error notifier ToolTip for drive letters than don't exist.
It disappears after 3 seconds.

Ok, now I see why you did it the long way using all :: for hotkeys.

Basically I went back to the source in your download and just added the
IfWinActive bit.  The other wrinkle is holding the Left Mouse Button down while
hitting a key.  That way I can use the mouse click to make the desktop or some
non application space active, such as task tray.  While holding the left mouse
button down I just hit a letter key.  Otherwise I have to click someplace to make
a safe window the active window, then let go of the mouse and hit a key combo.
If you are more keyboard oriented this is probably no hassle as you may hit
AltTab to go to another window or some other key combo.  But I'm mouse
oriented.  This is just a variation more comfortable for me. I hope you don't
mind me tromping on your ahk code. It's just a handy util so I wanted to
modify for the mouse oriented types like myself. :)

edit: even with the hotkeys all hard coded using :: the calls to EmptyWorkingSet()
keep memory usage in the tray under a MB.

DriveKeysAtoZ is handy. I like the RControl as it doesn't interfere with say Control-t or other use of left control key.

I reworked it just a tad, mainly to add EmptyWorkingSet() call that reduces memory usage to around 328 KB sitting in the tray. I also added a 2 second time-out to the error box so that the user isn't forced into a key press to clear it.

Edit: also added ifwinactive so that the hotkeys would only work if Explorer or the Desktop is that active window.  Avoids conflicts with editors etc..

Edit2: also added tray and taskbar to make life a bit easier.

The other factor is probably the number of extensions. I have 7 installed. Fortunately unlike FF you don't need that many to handle basic functions.  The bookmark sync is built in.  An ad blocker, I have an XML formatter(which FF has built in) and I have XMarks just so I can sync passwords to FF now and then.  LastPass is good across them both.

edit: looks like that's it. Must run each extension as a separate process.  I just dumped a bookmark checker extension and now it only shows 7 processes plus 1 per tab.

edit2: seems there's not exactly a 1 to 1. But it does seem to diminish as you uninstall extensions. Right now I have 3 tabs open and TM is showing 10 instances of chrome.exe.
I seldom run with more than 4 tabs open anyway.
5175
I've got 3 tabs open and count 13 instances of chrome.exe!!

If your browser eats up all your memory, then there's no need to open any programs (whether you wanted to or not)!

"Patient is bleeding, doctor!"
"Shoot him in the face. Killing him is the only thing that can stop the bleeding!"

The only thing I've had to do using Chromium is use a swap file(since I only have 2 GB physical memory in this machine.) I was running with no swap.  But I have a bookmark fetcher for refreshing favicons. It has default browser open with up to 10 tabs before it kills it and reloads.  Brute force way to get favicons back as Chromium doesn't have a CheckPlaces equivalent. Running that with several other apps open, maybe a video player, I got an oom error.  That's the only time.

With a 4 GB swap file I've never gotten out oom error. It just honks!!  Way better than waiting 20 seconds just for FF to load off the disk.

I don't run office apps or spread sheets so I might as well let Chromium be the memory hog on this PC. :)

Besides, it's inevitable.  The single process browser on a multi-core PC is dead.  They'll all have to follow suit.

I'm just trying another build now.  85605.  Seems to have gone back to 8 processes + one per tab.  Maybe that was just an interim thing to fix a problem.  There's bound to be a lot of flux with nightly builds. I'm surprised they run as good as they do.  But I try to avoid the ones with large change logs. This last one is back down to no changes.
