Fidel, just a few more minor issues... ;)

When I first starting searching multiple file types, I didn't realize the search was finished because the green progress bar doesn't disappear. The titlebar reveals both files found and MB examined, but is there any way to show that info near the progress bar? Alternatively, some indication in the status bar--ie. Done or Search Complete--would be useful info to have within eyesight.

Also, I don't understand how to utilize the "Skip this file/Skip this folder" option--I'm probably overlooking something obvious. :-[

Wow, excellent features comparison, Ashraf. 8)

...One of the things I am currently brainstorming right now is how to present the search results to the user, considering that same song can be found in two different files which are not exactly equal. That is, their audio data is not 100% exact but rather similar to some extent (eg. 90% or more due to different encoding options/noise in the background/quality of the recording; unlike regular duplicate files in DupeTrasher which are completely equal so grouping and presenting them to the user was much easier task to me). So basically, lets say that songX can be found in forms of fileA, fileB and fileC, where
- fileA and fileB are 90% similar
- fileA and fileC are 90%
- but fileB and fileC are only 70% smilar
The reason for this is due to probabilistic nature of non-exact comparing (that is I use percents and similarity rather than "exactly equal" or "not equal" as in DupeTrasher). Now the question I have is, should I include all three files in the same duplicate group? And what about if fileC is 90% similar to the fileD which is just 50% similar fileA and fileB? I hope you can see the issue here.

Yeah, I can see that could get a little complicated to present graphically. I was attempting to comment on possible grouping issues which occur when there are multiple matches among songs A,B,C,D, etc. Some folks might prefer to see a large group with A and B at X%, A and C at X%, C and D at X% , A and D...--that gets unwieldy rather quickly. Other mathematically challenged folks like me would rather see smaller distinct groups.

Regardless, as long as you have more than one data view (ie. large group view, small group view, list view, etc.) I'm definitely interested in your software. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you launch stuff?
« Last post by sajman99 on November 18, 2009, 03:58 PM »
I've been using RUNit 2.1b for as long as I can remember to launch programs and frequently used folders. RUNit was apparently discovered recently at freewaregenius, but it's been around for many years. I like that it's simple, portable, and uses very little memory. BTW RUNit looks considerably better than that cruddy pic on the main page would suggest--it must be an old pic from Win9x days.

Yep, the tweaker/tuner folks seem to be on the Win7 bandwagon, but I haven't really seen much else for Win7 only. For example, Stardock has their Tweak7 and Totalidea has their Tweak-7.

... The fact that Dell includes a real, honest to goodness OS install disc with their PCs that are devoid of any crapware makes it an attractive feature for the newbie...

Oh good grief, crapware/junkware is a real pet peeve of mine. I understand why the manufacturers load all the trial junk ($$) so I guess I was naive to believe they would listen to customer complaints and eventually stop this practice.

So what's the story with junkware these days--has the practice lessened at all? Can anybody say, for example, if Toshiba or HP loads trialware junk on their laptops?

Much as I try to not be so picky, junkware actually affects my buying decision.

...I'm a big fan of portable software myself - so expect the change to happen soon. I'll make it an ini file so it's nice and easy to maintain.
Sounds very promising. Hopefully the .ini file can retain MRU lists of folders, filetypes, and search terms--such capability would minimize needless clicking and/or typing.

Also, if the Filename field was a dropdown like the Folder field, then File Hound could retain multiple search profiles.

Fidel, thanks again for your efforts. 8)

Fidel, I have a question about File Hound's registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Jtf\Hound3 which evidently sets the "Associate with Folders" context menu entry...

Is there a way to use a config file (.ini) or some other way (I have no idea :-[) to implement that value so File Hound can be 100% portable? If so, I could put File Hound on a flash drive and use it on my friend's computer without touching the registry.

Just curious about this portability issue--regardless I will continue to use File Hound. :)

Good news, AsmDev. I look forward to your new audio comparison software.

I hope it will have sufficient options so the user can implement his/her own preferences. For example, if my preference is to start comparison at a similarity/tolerance of 60%, I should be able to do that without moving down from a higher pre-set level.

Likewise, in observing matches I would like a choice as to how they are grouped--something like "show all matches" or "show most relevant matches". Regardless of the presentation of matches, the software will still have to perform the same amount of work (if I understand correctly), but the more presentation options, the better!

Also, some type of (optional) cache management feature would be convenient so users don't have to start at ground zero every time they scan a large music collection.

Good Luck with development. :)

+1 for File Hound. 100% agree with Darwin--simple yet powerful search with logical interface...and it's free.  8)

So Hound is now File Hound, and it's much improved. 8) Fidel, I will be glad to ask others...
Hey cool person x, How's it going? I've been pretty good. Have you heard about hound?? It's pretty damn cool. Take a look - jimmythefork.com
I appreciate both your software and your sense of humor--good luck with continued development. :)

Fidel, seriously nice work with the new Hound. I'm definitely keeping it in my arsenal of search tools. BTW I've only tested for a few runs, but it looks like Hound is no longer leaving behind temp files when searching through PDFs. Congratulations on your excellent work.

What's the Best? / Re: Video conversion: What's the best (freeware or shareware)?

This is free and works, although I use Pazera a lot.

cmpm, thanks for mentioning this nice one I hadn't heard about. Oxelon Media Converter conveniently works via context menu, and it can use four threads to take advantage of quad-core multi-processor systems.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to add URLs in RUNit?
« Last post by sajman99 on November 15, 2009, 03:36 PM »
sri, if you create a URL shortcut anywhere on your system, you can then drag it into RUNit and it should launch in the default browser. However, if you later move/delete the shortcut RUNit will display an exclamation mark indicating a broken link.

For URLs FARR or perhaps Launchy could be a better/more convenient solution.

General Software Discussion / Re: Worst Win7 reviews (ongoing)

Not a review per se, but I got a kick out of Five Super-Secret Features in Windows 7.

Among the ultra secrets are... dual-boot software known as Training Camp to run Mac OS X and software that turns normal LCDs into touchscreens. Good Stuff. ;D

Yes, Ultimate Windows Tweaker mentioned by SKA looks good. Another Win7 supported tweaker is XdN Tweaker.

Perhaps not earth-shattering but nonetheless cool--you can personalize your Win7 computing experience with these logon changers:

Also, 360desktop is "free software that extends Windows as a 360° workspace, plus an online environment for creating interative 360° wallpaper, with a gallery and a widget platform, for sharing your favorite 360's with everybody." Very recently they announced Win7 compatibility.

Sheesh, birds surely can be a destructive force of nature--just ask US Airways pilot "Sully" Sullenberger who landed an airliner in the Hudson River after a double bird strike.

And to think I was only worried about my car's windshield. ;D

FWIW I'm really liking Online Armor's new pricing structure with $19.95 for a single user license for OA Premium.

getting back on topic - anyone know does that work well with AntiVir (Avira) (full version)

edit/ found this via search
[...] my normal defense system of Avira and Online Armor is generally strong [...]
-Steven Avery (June 08, 2009, 10:27 PM)

Yep, I've never had any issues running Online Armor with its Program Guard enabled (ie. classical HIPS) along with Avira AntiVir. Just don't go overboard with security and try to add something like Threatfire into the mix-- that would likely be asking for trouble.

...Well, they make money simply by redecorating. All TuneUp Utilities 2010 really is to me, is TuneUp Utilities with a new coat of paint. A new design, conveniently placed there, to distract the users of the program and make them think that the new program is different, that it has different features etc...

Greetings peteyt, nice first post. :) I agree with your main point regarding the new TUU. Especially in these tough economic times, I'm perfectly content to stick with an older version.

Not sure what happened to the details on VirtualProtect, but good to see Returnil has progressed with their 64 bit support.

Did anybody ever try MeeSoft's minimalist file manager Commander which I mentioned some while back?

In numerous online discussions of duplicate finders, I haven't seen a mention of this software despite its excellent dupe detecting abilities. Of course, as a file manager it gets eclipsed by more well known robust apps, but in the narrow context of duplicate finding it remains my favorite file manager.

HCbatchGUI has been updated with October HCenc 0.24. On its home page the developer provides a link to a portable install which reads settings from HCbatchGUI.ini. In the advanced UI mode you can change pretty much any setting-- a tweaker's paradise.

The big question is how it compares to more well-known HC tools like FAVC and AVStoDVD. Anybody use HCbatchGUI before and care to comment on the quality of its output?
