On the off chance that you haven't deleted it yet, it's on your L: drive just waiting to be run from Windows (Explorer or the command line if you're one of those hard-core typing junkies).   You were just in a hurry and didn't finish reading the dialog. Firefox has security built in to keep you from running programs directly from it by accident -- if you click the "launch application" button it'll do it. Or just browse to the location it's showing and you'll be all set.

The same issue would appear no matter what executable (EXE file) you download; it's probably not a problem when you download zip files and others but it's still better to manage files outside of your browser.

Try clearing your browser cache. IE can be stubborn about using cached material even after it's been updated online. (Also it happily keeps partially-downloaded files. It just dumps 'em wherever you said to put 'em with the full name of the intended file and no indication there was a problem. Firefox is a little smarter about that stuff.)

If that doesn't do it you'll have to look at firewall/antivirus/proxy settings and so on.

I love the graph idea. If that's too complicated, even a way to export stats to Excel or something would be really kewl.

I did try WS-FTP (32-bit) alongside SmartFTP (64-bit) and have to say that SmartFTP was so much faster - in real and tangible ways.

I'm not very familiar with WS-FTP, but I know the SmartFTP developer spends a lot of time tweaking it. I get the impression he spends time pretty much every day fine-tuning some aspect of it or adding something new. It may not be the 64-bit nature of SmartFTP that's showing up but the constant care and pruning it gets.

That's a great idea -- it's actually why I came to the website today.   Wouldn't it be cool to just have a clickable link in the line for each program to be updated that was user editable? That way you could keep the current DC discussion thread linked with the program's version history. I'm always interested in "what's new" before deciding whether to update.

Or, maybe there's a way to auto-update the link when the developer opens a new thread?

How does one tell 60 (or 300) apps they are of less importance? Should I mark all of them "Force below normal"?

That's the beauty of Process Tamer -- it reduces those below normal that demand more than their fair share of CPU time, whether 5 or 5000.

Don't forget that you can adjust the amount of CPU usage that triggers the priority reduction, so it could actually work out to be the equivalent of "Force below normal" for all but the foreground app when set that way.

I'm glad a very high priority works for you, though -- hopefully RealPlayer 11 will be optimized before it goes "final".

For some reason the new RealPlayer 11 Beta will not play all steady when forced to the normal "High" (13), but will do hiccups and apparently needs a little more power reserved, say 16

Is that safe? I realize I don't know your specific situation, but in general it would seem better to reduce the priority of less-important apps. Any priority above 8-13 starts to run the risk of impacting critical system processes.

True -- XML is a fairly bulky format. But then again, so is HTML.

I'm curious -- why use your own proprietary proxy setup when Windows has a central config via IE?

Also, Justice mentioned that you might be superceding his updater with this program. If so, I posted a recommendation about the file format to parse for updates so it could be used universally.

I'm starting to wonder if it's even possible to run a huge business and still put out a good product over the long haul. Still, ya gotta admit, protecting their investment in the company name is one of those necessary evils. Imagine how long it took some creative people to come up with the name Kleenex, and now it's about as generic as can be...

Whoops, wandering way offtopic. How about a Kleenex dispenser in the Notification Area?

Sort of. He says "I think the reason people started calling it the "system tray" is that on Win95 there was a program called "systray.exe" that displayed some icons in the notification area". Win95? This is 12 years later and it's still there. I guess that his making it sound like it was only around over a decade ago was what prompted me to ignore that part of his post.

Still, on rereading it, it sounds like he's saying that systray.exe only displays certain specific system status icons, and isn't a manager module (separate from Windows Explorer) for that area of the taskbar. If that's the case, I'll fall back to agreeing with most of the other folks here: language is about communication, and "system tray" is a more comfortable way to describe the specific Windows feature than "notification area". In my opinion, "notification area" is a technical description, not a name. However, I'd be willing to call it "status bar" or something else (not already in use) that's similarly casual and descriptive.

(As for that part of the taskbar, I sure hope somebody's redesigned it in Vista, because it's a very poorly designed, highly unreliaable UI in XP!)

It's a shame to see that somebody writing on MSDN could be so out of touch. Maybe he could check the listing of files on just about every Windows machine on the planet, with minor variations: C:\WINDOWS\system32\systray.exe

This is one of my favorite background programs! It really does help make Windows more usable. 

The ideas I like best out of what people have thought of so far:

• Temporarily allow a busy task -- Select a currently-throttled process and allow it to continue freely until the process ends (or PT ends), without creating a permanent rule.

A tip of the hat to these three, which I think combine to round out an important overall concept: more fine-grained control over individual processes.

I also like the idea of a list of recently tamed apps and the start/end times for their taming. Besides system diagnostics or troubleshooting benefits, it also helps one affirm that the Tamer settings are working well overall. Maybe the stats could even be exported in a CSV format or something similar for the die-hard number crunchers out there -- heck, you could even do a daily/weekly/etc. graph if you could export the relevant info.

Notice that I'm not asking for a built-in graphing capability, which would be quite the project in itself. Maybe next version.
