In case no one noticed, I started putting my table together in my top post.

So, Seagate doesn't have a 10k drive?  I guess I'll go on to the WD Raptor in that case.  That's too bad, I really like Seagate's 5 year warranty.

Man, 10k's are expensive!  So, two WD Raptor's 150GB will run me about $340.

Hmm, interesting, I never considered that.  OK, 2 small, fast drives.  1 large drive for storage.  But then I still need 2 large drives for my backups (double redundancy).  That's 5 drives!  If you remember my backup article.  I backup everything on the 2 drives, and one of them is kept in a physically different location.

OK, so what are the specs for 4gb high quality ram?  Brand+model please.  Thanks.

OK:
Intel core i7 is about $300, from what I see.

8GB DDr-3 ram seems to be about $250.  Is this the latest RAM type now?

I doubt I'll get an IOdrive.  I'm thinking about 3 1TB drives, 2 of them Seagate, maybe 1 WD (or another Seagate), I don't know.  THe two seagates will be used for dual-backup, and the other one will just be my main drive.  Maybe I'll try Samsung finally, I hear a lot of good things about them, but I don't know anything about them.  I know from my experiences, I've never had problems with Seagate and WD.  I'll probably go with all Seagate because they have the longest warranty's, and that's all I really care about.  I back up 3-fold, so losing data is not an issue.  The drives altogether will probably run me $300-500.

This is already getting pretty expensive, but that's ok.  Maybe $2000 will be my limit, I don't know.

What monitors do you guys recommend?

Hmm, ok, two monitors it is.  So, two 24", or two 21"?  I'm not sure, but I feel like two 24" side by side is a bit awkward.

OK, well since you guys brought it up, let's have motherboards/cpu and montior be the first items to discuss.

What motherboard shall I get?  My current one is an average-level MSI from 2001, and I've also bought an ASUS one for my sister (a little higher end) back in 2002.  Don't know much else about them.  The MSI never really had any problems that I can remember.

For CPU, I usually get the upper-middle class CPU, right about the point where the prices jump significantly for bleeding-edge ones.  For example, if the choices in dollars are, 1,3,5,7,12,15,18,25,28,30...I'll usually get the 18.  If that makes any sense.  And I normally get Intel, no good reason...name recognition.

For monitor, mouser's suggestion would be a big deal for me.  I currently still use a 19" CRT.  At work, I have a nice widescreen Dell 24".  So what's better, one wide 24", or two 21"?

i also have that belkin hub 40hz posted about and i agree with everything he said.  the one thing i can say is don't buy a hub that doesn't have it's own power supply.
Noted.  Yes, I learned that lesson a while ago when I plugged a bunch of stuff into a hub and they didn't work.

I trust the opinions on this board more so than anyone, so I would love it if you people could help me build my new pc.  I get a new computer once every 5-7 years, and I don't keep up with hardware in the meantime, so I need a lot of help.  For this thread, as it goes along, I will update this first post with the hardware I have chosen (like mouser does with his software updates).  Thanks in advance!

I started a similar thread earlier about this
, but this is the official one now.  I just finished a hectic year with work and school, so now I have time to do this.

That looks real nice.  I used to tutor Belkin's kid in math in Manhattan Beach, CA.  Their house was full of Belkin stuff.  I even got a free wifi router at the time.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Great find! Nice to hear some decent jazz for a change.
Glad you liked it!  FYI, Gene Harris is my hero, and that trio in the video is the greatest of all time in my opinion.

LaunchBar Commander / Need undo!!
« Last post by superboyac on December 04, 2008, 12:04 PM »
I just accidentally deleted my entire tree, and there's no undo to recover.  I looked at all the backup files, but I can't seem to figure out how to open them.  I go to "open" and double-click on one of the dated backup files and nothing happens.  I'm a little worried.  Please help, thanks.

Thank you, I know a lot of people get 800 on the quant, and I sort expected to get it, but during the test, a few questions were more difficult than I thought, and I started doubting myself.  Now, hopefully, Berkeley will take me back for a masters degree.
4991
GRE news:

OK!  Well, I'm proud to say that I got the 800 on quantitative that I was hoping for (can't say the same for verbal, but I don't think it matters for my case).  So mission accomplished there.  Now, finish up applications and hope my preference accepts me.  Woo!!

For the record, a really neat feature of InfoQube, which hasn't been discussed much yet, is that you can have Excel "read" IQ data live. So you create an excel file, create a link to the project grid, save it and send this file to your co-workers / boss. When they open your Excel file, they'll see your project information, not an (outdated) copy, but the current one. They won't be able to edit the data (they'd need IQ for this), but this is a neat reporting tool.
Yikes, Pierre!  That is amazing!

Note correction made to improve clarity. Approx 6 hours after original. I would not like a 30 minute cut off for edits.
haha!  I agree. ;D
4994
First of all, let me address this issue according to what I'm doing currently:

--First of all, I have obviously been using InfoQube since this thread started, and yes, it is definitely capable of doing what I'm asking.  Actually, I do use it to do what I initially what I asked for in this thread.  Here's how it's done.  In the grid, I have a column for date, project name, project description, status.  Then any notes go in the html pane.  There are no trees or heirarchy used, it's just one long list.  If I need to look at just the one project, I filter the list and only those are shown.  So for each significant project event it gets logged in this grid, and it becomes a project history database.  I actually call the grid Project Log.

--Now that is not exactly what I asked for in the original question.  Since I work in a heavily bureaucratic environment, my supervisor also has to know some of this stuff, but not in the detail listed above.  He just needs a single line per project showing it's general status and project number.  And since he doesn't use infoqube, excel is the simplest way to do this.  So I made a really cool Excel spreadsheet where everyone lists their projects with a drop-down box for a status, and all these projects get listed in a master sheet for the supervisor to look over.  It works really well and was kind of a pain to do (since it really should be done in access or using VBA, neither of which I know).

So there's my update.  Personally speaking, the simplest solution to this is InfoQube, especially if it's just for one person and not meant to be shared between several people.  Even then, I think InfoQUbe could do it, but you'd have to convince all the other users to use it and buy it and etc...you know how that goes.

Buyer protection from eBay/Paypal (take your pick they are the same people) is a joke and almost impossible to claim.

Sounds like eBay/Paypal are as deep into scamming as the rest of 'em.

I don't know.  I've had one dispute with Paypal and it was settled very easily and satisfactorily.  It probably depends on the nature of the dispute.

If this is simply in the name of fun, I'm all for it.  Would I be able to irrationally praise and bash certain software?  I would kind of enjoy that, in a sick way.

I like being able to edit at any given time.  Unless it becomes more common, can't we just leave it alone?

Living Room / Re: Experiences buying software on eBay?

I've bought software on ebay before (carefully, though) and it has all been a good experience.  I also had misgivings about it initially, but everything turned out fine.  I figure it's not really my job to do all the detective work about all this, I don't have the time.  Unless it's obvious where I can tell something is shady, I'm ok with it.

Heck, I just bought $90 sneakers for $30.  How do I know they're not "hot"?  I don't know.  I also just bought a Sony mp3 player for less than half price, brand new.  I'll never know.  Then again, I'm about to sell a brand new pair of Birkenstocks for what will end up to be probably 1/2 price, but there's a legitimate story behind it.

My point is, I don't view software any differently than other items.  I can only do so much as far as my own judgment.  After that, well, you're on your own I guess.

General Software Discussion / Re: List of newbie questions regarding software
« Last post by superboyac on November 19, 2008, 12:16 PM »
As with most of your requests, this sounds like a very particular and uncommon thing.  I can't think of an application that does this the way you describe.  Also, I'm still a little confused, but I think I get the idea.

Here's my thoughts.  You can probably write something in InfoQube with a function that may be able to do this, but I can't think of how exactly.  Yes, many todo programs have a feature for recurring tasks, but they are tied to time intervals.  The only one I can think of is this obscure program called Sciral Consistency.  It's a weird little program, but kind of cool because it offers a way to do seemingly insignificant, recurring tasks without a exact-date schedule.

That's my best suggestion.
