General Software Discussion / Re: Software to help you quit smoking?
« Last post by app103 on December 26, 2006, 03:17 PM »
As i've never smoked too, I'm also curious about this matter. How can a software actually help someone who is addicted to something?
Does anyone know someone who was successful with it?

15 years ago my husband quit smoking with the aid of software.

It was on a small hand-held throw away device called LifeSign.

It had to be trained for one week, by him pushing a button each time he smoked. After that he could only smoke when it told him he could...and it gradually increased the length of time between cigarettes, till he was completely smoke free, which took about 3 weeks.

Now I'll tell you why it worked:

It could only be used once, at which point if you failed you had to throw it away and buy another one if you wanted to try again.

It cost $75.

With a price tag like that, you are more likely to put forth a greater effort in not failing, otherwise you have wasted a pretty large chunk of money. That alone is a really good incentive to stick with it and make it work.

The original LifeSign device is no longer available, but the company has replaced it with a newer, slightly less expensive model called QuitKey.

http://www.amazon.co...mputer/dp/B000EY3IUG

Now as an alternative to software, you could just pay my round trip transportation and feed & house me till you quit...and I promise to follow you around and smack you every time you light up. It would probably be more effective.  :D

of course this means I would be quitting too, since I am still a smoker, myself...but hey, I can do that in exchange for a free vacation.

SMF Forum Mods / Re: Emptiness instead of the forum content
« Last post by app103 on December 26, 2006, 01:07 AM »
If you have the forum hosted with a hosting company and not on one of your home pc's ignore all of this, it doesn't apply to you.

Is the forum being hosted on a pc behind the same router as the one you were using while trying to access it?

In other words, are you hosting the forum yourself on one of your pc's?

If this is the case, don't use the domain name...it may not work.

This is a common issue when hosting from a home pc.

You might have to use the IP of that pc on your LAN in which your forum is hosted on instead of the domain name.

This would not be your external IP that the rest of the world would connect to...not the IP you have your domain name pointing to.

This would be the IP that is assigned to that pc on your LAN, which is different. (Check your router to see what it is.)

I run a web server on my home pc for various reasons. My daughter can't connect to it using the domain name I have set up for it. She must use this pc's LAN IP address instead.

It would look similar this for you:

http://192.168.1.48/vitation/index.php

(replace the LAN IP with the one for that pc which is hosting the forum)

This isn't an IP the rest of the world can connect to...only those on my LAN, those on my side of the router. The rest of the world on the other side of my router can access through my domain name.

See if this works for you.

located a manual online for it...

SNAG-0146.png

So if the songs were transferred to it through itunes, they can't be transferred to hard drive through Explorer because they will not show up as being there.

So I still need a utility to transfer them from the ipod to hard drive.

The iPod can be used as a regular USB drive, so you can copy the music to you hard drive through a file manager. The manual should tell you how to let the iPod be accessed as a USB drive.

I forgot to mention this ipod didn't come with a manual. (it's used, not new)

My daughter received an ipod for Giftmas that was preloaded with 6 gigs of music.

We would like to be able to copy this music to her hard drive so she won't lose it.

Does anybody know of a freeware utility that will copy these files to a Windows PC?  :tellme:

I found a few that were free, but they were for Mac only, not Windows.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

General Software Discussion / Re: windows 98
« Last post by app103 on December 22, 2006, 10:13 PM »
You most likely need to obtain and install drivers for all your hardware.

You will need ones specific for Windows 98.

Did your PC come with any CD's with drivers on them?

If you have a brand name pc, you can go to the manufacturer's website and there should be an area there for their customers to download drivers. Just enter your pc's serial number and you will be offered the drivers to download.

Or you can search Google with the brand & model number for each item of hardware that isn't functioning properly, followed by the word 'drivers'. You might have to actually physically look at the hardware to find out what it is, if you don't have it written down somewhere.

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Keyboard & Mouse cleaner
« Last post by app103 on December 21, 2006, 12:20 PM »
Disabling the multimedia keys is pretty simple to do.

It's usually a program running in the background. You just have to find the right one and kill it...then run it again when you want to turn them back on.

Every keyboard is different, so the name of the process and the location of the program's .exe file will be different too.

Best thing you can do is check your running processes and start googling the ones you don't know what they do till you find the one for the keyboard. Then search your hard drive for the file name so you know where it is when you want to turn it back on.

besides my own ToDo List for all kinds of lists...

Goal Enforcer for making larger projects more manageable.

And Post-It Software Notes, Office Edition...the version I use is older (2.1), but this has become my favorite!  :-*

SNAG-0138.png

I have numerous trays...
  • one with 12 tabs for organizing by month
  • one with 7 tabs for organizing by day of week
  • one with task type tabs for categories of things
  • notes with alarms that repeat on a daily, monthly, weekly, or yearly basis...or just once.
  • various boards with project ideas
Almost my whole life is in those trays!  :D

and I am still using my famous 'junkbox.txt' to hold all kinds of crap I want to save really quick.

It can have a GUI.

Just be sure you close your eyes before hitting F9 in Delphi and don't open them again till you have hit alt+F4, when testing your game.

Then you will know if it is acceptable or not.  ;)

Living Room / Re: Building a Quiet PC

Studies have shown that silent PCs increase productivity because you feel better - and I can second that from my own experience. It's SO wonderful to work with a PC that's humming away as 'loud' as the sound of a soft summer breeze!

Studies have shown if you put me in a quiet room I will go insane.  :P

Studies have also shown that if I don't hear 'normal sounds' coming from my pc, I will just worry myself to death.  :P

I don't mind the sound of fans spinning. I can't sleep unless I hear it. I have been around the constant sound of fans running for over 20 yrs...

Air cleaners
evaporative humidifiers
window fans
air conditioners
computers

It has become a sort of soothing white noise for me.

Having all the hardware posts buried in the Living Room really isn't that good for finding what you want when you are looking to see if anybody has made any comments on something specific you are planning on purchasing.

It would have been nice to find this discussion before I made my decision. It would have been nice to hear what people had to say about it and see if they could have come up with better alternatives that would fit my requirements/budget.

Just adding a General Hardware Discussion section right under the General Software Discussion board would do the trick. It really wouldn't be changing the focus of the site...It would just make the info easier to find without having to sift through all the posts about flash games, cool websites, and other yummy distracting stuff.

Living Room / Re: Recommendations for good external hard drive solutions?
« Last post by app103 on December 18, 2006, 09:01 PM »
app103: if you're going for a tray solution like that, why not go for internal instead of USB? Better performance etc...

Anyway, definitely go for a metal enclosure (much better heat transfer than plastic), and watch out for fan specifications... some of them have tiny but extremely loud little fans >_<

I don't have room in my desktop pc's case for an internal one. I wish I did. And the other will be used with my daughter's  laptop. No chance of being able to use an internal one with that.  :P

I don't really care about the sound of the fans...not like it will be plugged in long enough to become annoying. Mine is just for copying files between 2 pc's and making backups. My daughter might care about the sound though.

Hi app103, I have the internal version of that Kingwin drive.  It hasn't done me wrong yet.

Glad to hear I may have made a good choice. I am not that good at hardware shopping.  :-[

General Software Discussion / Re: moral behaviour in the shareware industry
« Last post by app103 on December 18, 2006, 06:24 PM »
As far as something you may have bought that requires online activation (is that what you mean in #1?)

You paid for it, you have the serial, you are legally entitled to use the software...

Do whatever you have to do to enforce your rights to use that software.

-----

As far as #2 goes...I don't see any way you could get your money back legally/illegally, morally/immorally. Maybe I just don't understand the question fully, or I am still a bit naive about some things.

-----

I think the best way to handle #3 is to contact your credit card company and file a complaint. They will most likely refund you the price paid and go after the company that handles the transactions themselves, to get their money back. They are more effective at getting their own way than you, since they can just take what they refunded you off the that company's totals next month and the company really doesn't have much room to argue about it.

I wouldn't try to bypass anything unless the credit card company denied you a refund, and they usually won't in a case like this.

-----

And last of all...

Disclosing the name of company X might not be a good idea. Could cause trouble.
Disclosing Y serves no purpose at all.
Disclosing Z could serve to the public good by alerting others before they make the same mistake you did.
4918
For now, we'll take enthusiastic reviews with a grain of salt... unless it's Zaine Ridling talking about XYplorer or me about Opera ;D

If I start bouncing off the walls saying good stuff about any software with a price tag, either assume I won the lottery or I really like it x10.

and you can, of course, give thumbs up or down as you go, to refine the station more to your tastes.

Pandora will not allow other people to do that with a shared station. Only the station creator is allowed to refine it. They will not allow people to turn your stations into something you don't like.  ;)

Living Room / Share your Pandora Stations
« Last post by app103 on December 17, 2006, 06:06 AM »
mouser suggested I ask everyone to share their favorite Pandora stations and explain exactly how to do this.

Method #1:

The easiest way to share a station, or all of them is with your Pandora rss feed.

Those that are using Open Pandora will have to actually visit the pandora.com site to do this.

Click on the 'your profile' button

SNAG-0122.png

Then right click the rss icon and copy the target:

SNAG-0123.png

Add that link to your favorite rss reader.

When it loads, it will give you a list of all your stations.

SNAG-0124.png
(this is from my AOLex browser)

The url of each one is what you share, to share that station with others. I can't explain how to get the individual urls from your reader, as every reader is different. (I can just right click an entry and copy the link in mine.)

Share the rss feed url you originally added to your reader, to share them all in one shot.

Method #2:

The alternative is to email yourself the stations individually...

First, start playing the station you wish to share.
Then click the share button and select 'email current station to a friend'.
SNAG-0125.png

Fill in your own email address and click 'share'.

SNAG-0126.png

Then go check your email for the link. Share that link.  :)

Here is my rss feed for all of my stations:

http://feeds.pandora...telamer/stations.xml
(add this to your rss reader)

Here is just my station of Christmas music that I just made for my daughter:

Jingle Bells Radio
(you can just click this to listen, no extra software needed)

I have had 2 bikes stolen over the years...both from my basement.

The first one was an old vintage 10 speed from the 70's made by KIA (yeah, they make cars now)
It was locked and chained to a pole. They took the bike and left the lock.

The second one was really weird...

Someone stole our snow shovel...then 6 months later they returned it and took a bike...

They stole my husband's brand new 10 speed racing bike and left a falling apart one in its place...without a front wheel and the back tire was flat. It wasn't a complete theft...it was an unauthorized trade.   :o

Funny that they never seem to want my expensive 12 speed mountain bike with the hideous double basket contraption on the back.  ;D

But someone did steal the milk crate that was attached to the basket thing...and the bungee cords that were holding it in place.

This is my guess.

Try this google search:

http://www.google.co...n&q=PolZegerully

Notice in the first 100 results that all of the forum signups were within the last 3 days. Also notice that there was only 1 post made, and it is almost identical to the one here.

I saw the same message from the same username on another forum yesterday and only thought it was odd when I saw it here today.
