WinKey+B for system tray access and navigation via the left/right arrows.

didnt know that one - very convenient alright :up: :up:

In XP I used have a dedicated app to show the desktop in the taskbar and you could naturally alttab to it.
Because desktop display is built into 7, I think what I need is some sort of in-system solution.

I might try asking at www.superuser.com
I did find a few nice variation shortcuts there for alttab & for desktop:
Spoiler
Windows 7 (with aero theme) desktop shortcut & alttab variations.

With CtrlAltTab, the 'switcher' is shown, but you dont have to keep the keys pressed.
Which is nice if you want to tune out for a bit in no man's land :)

Show the XP style alt-tab (without enabling classic theme):
    Hold down the left alt key.
    Press and release the right alt key.
    Keeping the left alt key held down the whole time, now tab-tab-tab away

Winkey+Spacebar shows the desktop temporarily

General Software Discussion / I want the desktop to show in sequence in alttab
« Last post by tomos on March 19, 2013, 07:17 AM »
Windows 7
Here's how it works for me (like in XP)**

(Sorry, I dont know the correct terminology here which made it difficult to search for this & difficult to describe).

Lets say you have 5 windows open. A/B/C/D/E
And I'll call the desktop 'DT'

B has focus.
When you hit alttab the next in line is the last window that had focus let's say that was D.

Switch to E, then the sequence will be E/B/D/A/DT
Desktop always shows at the end of the first line of thumbnails.

If I switch to desktop and back to E, when I go to alttab again, the desktop will still show thus - E/B/D/A/DT

so my question is if there is a way to force the desktop to act as a window i.e. to also show according to the rule of 'which had focus last' ?

** disclaimer - I did tweak alttab a little after installing win 7 but I think that was only to get rid of the pesky window-frame previews it showed. I have alt-tab set up pretty much in the 'traditional' XP way but with thumbnails.

thankd rg & Jibz.
Amazon.com or kobo wont sell e-books here, but it does seem to be available here from B&N and the Sony links

edit/ I presume it means from now till the 24th inclusive ...

PS, is there a link? (thanks!)

Sort-of off-topic comment:
I'm not sure why a country of 4.5 million people thinks it needs a spy agency at all. Maybe I'm naive, maybe all countries do this, even the small ones. Must surely be a bit of a black hole for spending though...

I'm another basic user of SC.
Note that the current beta (which I think mouser plans to release shortly) makes it a lot easier to use, with an auto-hide bar on top of screen.

This could possibly be the best song I've ever heard. The more I listen to it, the more I like it (uses Flash):

Thanks app!
that one sounds good - even though it doesnt have the intelligent resizing I wanted.
If it does forward/back with hotkeys it looks like it's better that way than Curt's suggestion**
will test :up:

** Curt, in the video for AWC it shows the following hotkey options:

it's not clear if there's any more.
Could you let me know if there are? Many thanks :)

As you can see I dont have a fixed idea here - but my basic idea is good (for me at any rate :-[).

I notice I can move to the next image via the desktop context menu (Win 7 64bit)

  • Does "Fit" work how you like for images taller/wider than your screen height/width?
  • Does "Centre" work how you like for smaller images?

If that's the case, I guess you're asking for something that will intelligently determine which method to use based on image size and screen resolution?

yes, yes, and, yes :-)
(just in case - note that "Fit" is different to "Fill" which was suggested by rsatrioadi)

Fit to screen is good for larger images. Or fit to a fixed width and heigth (smaller than the screen)

I would love to be able to manually cycle through the images but suspect that might be impossible(?) - in which case maybe a batch resizer might be the best option (e.g. reduce height to 1050 if larger, reduce width to -say- 1000 if larger. Constrain proportions.) I just had a look at IrfanView - it could do that easy enough.

~~~
Another idea I just had:
is if an image is larger than xy, then a random section of the image (size xy) would be shown centered on the screen. Sort of like a window into the image.
edit/ adding thumbnail image for last idea (desktop with icons on both sides):
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Fill option does exactly what you want?
had to double-check there:
Fill enlarges the image so as it completely fills the screen (i.e. the shorter side of the image is stretched to screenheight or width) - which doesnt look good.
I like the images that are smaller than the screen left that way (with a background showing) - see this post for examples
(sorry if not fully clear - rushing off)
^reminds me of the struggles I have between filemanagers and dedicated image viewers, both with different weaknesses and strengths...
FWIW I just wanted to say that the Dopus solution will play the file only so long as the file has focus. Obviously one could open a new window and work in that. But not really what you had in mind.
But wondering would this be a stumbling block in explorer as well - IIUC you want it to integrate directly with explorer initially, but you then want it to stick to that folder - and ignore whatever you're now doing in explorer...
Noticed I had a bunch of images with black background or that looked good on black background.
Threw them in a folder and set it to rotate. Here's screenshot-thumbnails of a few of them:
General Software Discussion / Software to control Wallpaper?
« Last post by tomos on March 15, 2013, 10:12 AM »
Does some software exist for working with desktop wallpaper?
Current options for desktop wallpaper are:
  • Fit
  • Fill
  • Stretch
  • Tile
  • Centre
Fit will stretch a smaller image to desktop height (doesnt look good)
Centre will not reduce larger images to screen size
so,
what's missing is an option like you get in good viewers:
  • Centre - and reduce to fit in screen if necessary
Naturally I could resize the images, but that means a lot less flexibility (i.e. I'm a lazy beggar)
Another nice option would be the ability to cycle manually forward/back through images on the desktop via a hotkey.
(while hoping for somebody else having something better to "offer")
it's an interesting idea. It's definitely worth starting a new thread though - would get a better response in it's own thread.
(also, I reckon it would swamp this thread otherwise.)
Nobody else would like to just browse through their music collection and play a track when they find a one they like, right there, without starting any snazzy players etc?
I'd love that, but I dont use windows explorer...
Using a small player as the default mp3 file-opener could be an answer. One that'll automatically clear the current playlist and play the double-clicked file (I tried a couple and gave up/got distracted by something else then :-[)
Directory Opus file manager will play an mp3 file in the viewer.
I've never tried it till now tbh so cant really say much about it but seems to work very well:
@evamaria -
you should start a thread asking if your ideal file-project-manager exists. (You were asking about persistent manual sorting in another thread - I presume that ties in?) FWIW I know dopus does fairly good virtual file management (but not manual sort). I use an outliner myself with linked files - with mixed success. But I'm veering off-topic here....
