Living Room / Re: backup question - how much of a risk is fire?

For things that don't change often (or ever) like photos, burning a few copies of them and storing them far away from home should be sufficient.

For small files that change frequently, like projects, I zip them and email them to myself from my gmail account to my aol account.

Gmail stores a copy of everything you send, with the attachment, so you can access and download it from there if you should need to.

AOL allows me unlimited storage for email and attachments, so if gmail screws up my account or something, I can always go get it from my aol account if I need it.

This is in addition to having the projects backed up on 2 hard drives on this pc, and 2 on another.

Yeah, maybe it's overkill, but I have had problems in the past with not being able to access a copy of a website of mine to make changes to it for a few years. (pc died and I couldn't get the hd to work with other pc and free hosts don't usually let you download a full copy by FTP) I ended up having to re-write the entire site from scratch. I will never go through that again.

I have also demanded a certain friend of mine to email me a copy of a project when she does some work on it...she has a reputation for losing data and I really care about this project of hers. (she is writing a book) I have archived on my hard drive and in gmail a copy of every revision she has made to it...just in case.

And it is a good thing I made her do this because she had a hard drive die on her and she would have lost 3 years of work since the only backups she had were the copies she was sending me.

OMG...that looks insane on my website.

You guys hate this?
I thought it could radically change the way we browse... (less client/server cycles).

I actually like the snap previews and would love it if all sites had it for external links. It would save me a lot of time, trouble, and bandwidth if they did.

My browser is supposed to have a feature similar to it built in, but I can't remember how to activate it and it's not mentioned any more in the crappy online help files.

It would be a huge help to me when doing google searches.

Fire isn't the only reason for keeping a copy of your data far from your home....theft & flood are 2 more reasons.

What if your entire digital photo collection were stolen or damaged by flood...with all the baby pics of your children? You can't replace that kind of stuff. You can't go back in time and retake those photos.

Anything that would be a bother to replace...or impossible...should be backed up and put in a location far from home. The farther the better, as hurricane Katrina showed that across town at a friend's house wasn't far enough away.

What you are experiencing is one of the forms of 'buyer's regret', where you buy something and then wish you had waited a bit longer to buy it.

Kind of like when you buy a box of cereal and then the next day the store stocks a super bonus size where you get 50% more for the same price and you can't take your purchase back because you already opened the box you bought.

In cases like this you kick yourself...we all do. But we don't usually kick the seller.

You knew the upgrade policy when you bought the software. You knew it wasn't going to be free. That also comes with the understanding that you are accepting the risk that they could release the next version within minutes of your purchase.

OK, it's not a policy that I can say I would do to my customers, if I had any, but they have the right to set their own terms. When you buy, you are saying you accept that.

Like I said...this is a 'kick yourself' situation...not a 'kick the company' one.

Someone asked me for the link to this a little while ago and I just realized I never shared it here...

You can upload a photo of yourself and transform it to make yourself look a different race, in the style of a famous artist, or even into an 'ape'.

To save the images after transformation, you will need to do a screen capture. (what better reason to download Screenshot Captor and give it a try)

This is what I used to create the image of myself that you see in the biography section of my profile:

There is no start button when viewing the page in IE, but there is a red progress bar at the top, that the page with the pics automatically loads after it fills up.

Is this some sort of timer to allow the visitor time to read the page before it automatically begins?

maybe the experiment is to see how angry people get when they aren't shown promised hot pictures of the opposite sex?

Why use PartitionMagic in the first place, when you can use compmgmt.msc + format? :)

Because I was only getting the option of NTFS...not FAT32.

Problem is solved!

Now let me explain how I did it...

I was told by a friend that Partition Magic has problems if you create more than 4 partitions on a hard drive with it...it will screw up partitions #5+.

Solution:

  • Use Windows to destroy the last 2 partitions.
  • Use Windows to recreate them and format them NTFS, if that is the only option you have.
  • Use Partition Magic to convert the 2 partitions to FAT32, shrinking them to under 60 gigs if necessary, first. (expand them to desired size when finished)
  • Reboot.

This worked and everything is now correctly reported.

This is one darn good game! And I think the cheesy graphics add to it's charm. I love it!  :-*

I did find a bug almost as soon as I started playing it though. (that's to be expected if I run something...I always find a bug in everything)  :-[

In the first house he can enter, if you go past the guy he talks to, and keep going, Branston suddenly rises up into the air, goes over the wall into a dark abyss and is never heard from again. (you have to reload the game)  :(

At last, here they are, my nany mug pics:

1Mum&Mug01 [80%].jpg

Directly behind me, in front of my pc case that is being blocked by my head in the first pic, is my jar of chocolate cody coins.

Behind me, on the shelf and on top of my scanner, are my 'dead friends'...and yes, one has her own pc.
3Mum's Dead Friends.jpg

By my speakers are my animal friends. I only know the name of one of them...Woe the Doe. (she has this 'woe is me' look on her face and I didn't have the heart to let her be thrown in the trash, so I rescued her from my daughter.)

And hanging above my desk, which you can't see in the first picture, is my special dollar. It's the first dollar I ever made from programming, signed by the more than wonderful, generous person that gave it to me, who's nany mug pic is on my monitor in the first photo. :-*

This is what PTD is showing:
SNAG-0184.png

Is there some sort of diagnostic tests in this? Because I didn't see anything other than a surface scan that this program can do.

And there was nothing that suggests that anything is wrong.

What happens if you go to My Computer, right click on the offending drives and choose Format ...?

Do you get the option to format FAT32 then?

No, I don't get that option...only NTFS.

But I don't have a FAT32 option on any of the other partitions on that drive or any of the other hard drives I have in this PC. I have a total of 3 in here now. One is a 40G FAT32 with 4 partitions from another 9x pc that I don't have any more. I don't get an option to format that one as FAT32 either.

It's as if FAT32 exists in the outside world, and this PC will deal with it (read/write), but it isn't going to allow you do FAT32 on anything, if it can help it.

There was something I forgot to mention that I don't know if it has any bearing on this...it's hooked up to a PCI IDE controller card. I don't know if that's important info or not.

Out of curiosity is there a reason why you are hanging on to Windows 98 on your other box? You can find cheap remaindered copies of Windows 2000 (and probably cheap WinXP OEM soon) if you look around and then you can use NTFS across both systems. (I don't mean second hand copies by the way).

It's actually WinME, not Win98. And the reason why I am hanging onto 9x on it is because it's a really old pc (10 yrs old!) and there isn't anything but 9x or 3.1 drivers for most of the hardware. In some cases I am using Win95 drivers with ME. So anything newer than WinME isn't an option, unfortunately. (it's also only 233mhz, 64mb RAM...slower than a constipated snail)

That is also the pc that I test 9x compatibility on, with apps I write. It's a good tough PC that you just can't kill...just keeps on running. It was a good thing to have around when my P3 died, and just in case something happens to this one, it's currently my only other option, if I want to keep my sanity. That's why I want to make sure this new hard drive is FAT32. I would hate to have something happen, be forced back to that old pc, and not be able to access my data.

I'll grab a copy of PTD and see what it says. My father has said good things about it, too. Said it was the one software purchase he has never regretted and that everyone should buy a copy.

That sounds preeeeety fucked up. Run compmgmt.msc and see what it thinks the partition layout is like. I do not trust partition magic; it usually seems to work flawlessly, but when it fucks up, it fucks up bigtime.

Ok...did that...

It says it's FAT32:

Living Room / Hard Drive File System Questions
« Last post by app103 on January 27, 2007, 06:13 AM »
I have a 400 gig hard drive that I created 6 partitions on.

The first 4 are formatted FAT32 and are about 60 gigs each.

The 5th is about 60 gigs too

The 6th is about 80 gigs.

When formatting the partitions, I was given a FAT32 option on the first 4 but not the 5th or 6th....only options were NTFS or ext3. (Partition Magic)

I wanted to make the whole thing FAT32 just in case there should be a reason why I might have to put this hard drive into my other pc for any reason...like if this pc dies. (other pc is 9x)

I didn't select a file system for the last 2 partitions because I wasn't sure what to do.

Windows XP says the file system is RAW on those last 2 partitions.

I have read & write access to those 2 partitions in XP even though the file system is RAW.

What I want to know is this:

  • Is it ok to leave it like this or should I format those last 2 as NTFS?
  • Can 9x access the files if I leave it RAW?
  • What would be the negative effects of leaving it the way it is now?
  • Is it safe to put files on it while it's RAW? Am I risking data loss?

I tested this on 9x for Martin last year. It works well.

So if you are running 9x and want to try this, there shouldn't be a problem.

Martin, do you still have the .pdf file that goes with this?

It might be of interest to someone like f0dder.
