In this era of make a joke... now make the apology (that everyone knows you didn't mean, but they want to see you debase yourself), a PSA:

I'll do it.  I was getting ready to do it anyway. :)

I'd also suggest that we... slant at least half of it towards newer members that have been getting into the mix, otherwise we'll just be swapping funds when we should be encouraging newcomers. ;D

That is correct.  However, you CANNOT play games from multiple computers at the same time. Not even different games.  That is, only one computer can be playing one game at any one time.

Making sure I understand this... you cannot access anything from the shared library from multiple computers at the same time?

I hope they clean up their own software that judges 'infection' to stop ever having false positives.  Because... you know.

My response (moderated?  Or just not shown)

And so the measures of infection will be fixed to make sure there aren't ever any false positives?  Isn't that a pre-requisite to doing any such thing?  And what about downtime?  You're comparison to the auto industry is disengenous at best.  This would be more akin to making your car without warning not able to be driven because someone else that you in no way authorized toyed with your catalytic converter.

And... of course this would have no impact at all on AV subscription rates.

This seems... ill thought out at best.

How long did it take you to receive the monitor when you ordered it?  I'm seriously thinking about that last one you posted...

Sam Greenlee just died... and in honor of that, I looked around for The Spook Who Sat By The Door.

spook.jpg

Based on Sam Greenlee's controversial novel, THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR is a hard-hitting shocker that depicts a world in which the long-suppressed black man fights back with a vengeance. Director Ivan Dixon's uncompromising adaptation was relegated to bottom-rung status upon its release, and it subsequently slipped into oblivion for decades until the film was rediscovered and released on DVD in 2004. Lawrence Cook plays Dan Freeman, a head-nodding, smiling African-American who impresses his CIA cohorts with his winning demeanor. What they don't realize is that Freeman's friendly facade is nothing more than a mask for a deep seated hatred of white people. When he returns to his Chicago hometown, Freeman uses his newly acquired knowledge to organize an underground militant movement that revolts against the very army that trained him.

Dixon's matter-of-fact approach to the material makes the film an even more powerful experience. It also manages to transcend the Blaxploitation genre by making a broader statement about the devastating effects of death and war. Featuring an impassioned performance from Cook (COLORS, POSSE), THE SPOOK WHO SAT BY THE DOOR is a frightening, but important, cautionary tale.

A must see and read in my opinion (the book is titled the same as the movie).

Available on Youtube also:

“The Spook Who Sat by the Door,” directed by Ivan Dixon and starring Lawrence Cook — with a score by Herbie Hancock, an old Chicago friend of Mr. Greenlee — was selected in 2012 for inclusion in the National Film Registry, a catalog of American movies of “enduring cultural or historical significance.” In a citation accompanying the announcement, the Library said that the film reflected a dimension of “who we are as a nation.”

After a successful three-week run in the fall of 1973 in Chicago and several other cities, the film disappeared from movie theaters, presumably because of its subject matter. The distributor, United Artists, never offered an explanation. Mr. Greenlee said that several theater owners had told him they were contacted by men who identified themselves as F.B.I. agents and ordered them to stop showing the film. The F.B.I. never addressed that accusation.

And the response.

What really concerns me as a gamer is that there is this war going on right in front of our eyes to decide our future in regards to gaming, and most of us ignore it.

Salamander seems to want to nickel and dime you for every plugin.

I'd rather nickel-and-dime than the whole dollar up front for things I don't need.  There are a lot of "nice" features in DOpus.  But I don't use most of them.  So to pay $100+ for features I don't need...

I used Altap Salamander up until I found DOpus.  Love it... there were some quirks to how it operated that DOpus fixed for me (don't really remember what it was now, and even looking it over I can't remember what it was, so maybe they fixed it).  When Dopus 9 no longer works for me (OS Upgrades or whatever), I'll probably give it another try.

Anyone who likes good urban fantasy should look at The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

The Dresden Files are Jim’s first published series, telling the story of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, Chicago’s first (and only) Wizard P.I.

The new book Skin Game just came out, and that's what I'm reading right now.

Theres some archived stuff at the bottom of https://www.grc.com/...ecrypt/truecrypt.htm

Wow, thanks!  That's a very useful link!

I can't sympathize too much with their moaning. Much as I like TrueCrypt, I've warned them repeatedly to be cautious about deploying or depending on it since (a) AFAIK nobody really knows who's behind it; and (b) it's a 'free' product - and sometimes free products just disappear without warning leaving you high and dry.

Guess I was right on both points.

Not with OSS :)  Which is why I lean towards that for free software that I'm really going to integrate into my workflow.

The mistake these developers made was in believing that they still “owned” TrueCrypt, and that it was theirs to kill.

I have a "Truecrypt Setup.exe" 7.1a on my XP. If that's not ok I believe Filehippo keeps some old versions. http://www.filehippo.../download_truecrypt/

I got a 7.1a from FileHippo and I'll check it when I get home.  If it's not good, then I might be asking you for your setup file ;)

I only use containers.. and bitlocker doesn't help with that.  *sigh*

How long before this is forked?  I mean, the source *was* available, right?

Why 'Watch Dogs' Is Bad News For AMD Users -- And Potentially The Entire PC Gaming Ecosystem

Caveat Before the quote:

Update 1: I’ve posted benchmarks for Watch Dogs across a wide range of AMD and Nvidia hardware.

Update 2: I’ve just finished an illuminating call with Nvidia’s Cem Cebenoyan, Director of Engineering, Developer Technology. Suffice to say, Nvidia disputes just about every claim made by AMD in this article. In the interest of fairness, I’ll be posting a follow-up piece as soon as possible.

Basically, each company tries to get a competitive edge.  But- how much of that can be at the consumer's detriment?  nVidia holds 60% of the market, AMD the other 40% (not exact numbers, and there are smaller players- but for all intents and purposes, that's how the pie is sliced).

AMD is calling out nVidia on the point that their optimization licenses are restrictive to the game industry working with both card manufacturers to deliver the best game possible, no matter the video card.  nVidia's framework in this regard is closed source, while AMD's is open.

There was another investigative piece on ExtremeTech on this very issue.

There are tests in that article which are ... concerning to say the least.  I suppose I'll have to wait for the updates to see what nVidia had to say on the issues.  But more monopolies are definitely not better for the consumer, as much as they benefit the developers (one target) and of course the company with the market dominance.

It's the bluetooth that allows it to be "a whole lot more" but not really. The "whole lot more" comes from an app on your phone or your PC. The Bit Fit is still essentially just a pedometer with an alarm.

How does an alarm track the quality of your sleep?

And while your watch thing certainly looks like it does a lot more than the Bit Fit, I heard there was an update to iOS that made the iPhone waterproof (;)) so your purchase may have been in vain.

I'm not quite *that* gullible :P

I was used to getting an obscene amount of money per hour contracting.

Awesome! I made a comfortable living. But nothing like a killing or obscene amount of money. So in my case I don't think a sense of entitlement ever got a chance to take root. ;D

Also glad to see you negotiated the pitfalls and ended up still standing. Good work!

Yeah... I definitely don't think that there's one size fits all for any of this.  But I do think that mindset, i.e. this is how much I'm making, so I should always make this much or more for doing this, does play a part.  And it's an understandable part... just not realistic in many cases.  It's played out over and over and over again.  Manufacturing jobs used to allow people to make a fairly decent wage- it was the backbone of middle america.  Now... not so much.  And some people negotiated that change well.  Others... not so much.

What's the difference between those that negotiate the change well and those that don't?

My previous monitor is 25"-26" (I think it was advertised as 25" when I bought it but the model number (which often indicates the size) includes the numbers 266 in it) at 1920x1200, and I wish I had a little more space, so I'm not sure I'd be satisfied with a larger monitor (27") with a smaller resolution (1920x1080). That's why I'm thinking the 27" 2560x1440 monitors will hit just the right spot.

Good points.  let me know how your international experience is.  That's been the only thing holding me back from buying from one of those (there are several on ebay)
