My vote: new thread.  Reviews probably wouldn't be limited to file managers.

Just to clarify - I meant dumping ground for ideas WRT the file management review. However, I tend toward your line of thinking, a new thread for review related notes is probably a good idea. If nothing else, it will keep this thread clear of review related notes and allow it to continue to serve as a discussion area for File Managers in general. I'll wait for a couple of more people to add their thoughts and take it from there.
4627
Oh, and yes, JohnFredC - I agree entirely with your point about the difficutlies that we'll be facing with this. I suspect that this is one reason mouser has urged me to shelve the idea for a few months while he sorts out his new review system. I've no idea what he has in mind, but presumably it will make this sort of collaborative review effort more feasible. In the meantime, this thread could be a sort of dumping ground for ideas, unless people think that we should start a new one and leave this one for general discussion?

The suggestion that DC use a wiki approach in structuring its reviews has come up recently and was discussed here. It was even briefly experiemented with (I *think*) early in DC's "life". As you'll note me stating on the first thread that I've linked to, I'm spectacularly naive about the costs of these things...

Thanks Innuendo! Yes, I know how big this is going to be - that's why I'm suggesting that we get a number of people to look at one or two apps each. There's no way we're going to come up with a "best" application winner - I envisage this being a broad overview of features. Mouser has suggested we hold off until early next year as he's developing a new review system that is actually geared toward this kind of review (or perhaps "overview' is better)

You might, then, need to go into "tools - add-ins" and root around in there. I'll post something more instructive in a couple of hours - have to get the kids to school!

Nice find - Acronis TrueImage Home 9 is a nice app (I've not tried v.10) - does everything I need it to do. Of course, v.11 is probably RIGHT around the corner... so v.10 might be available at bargain basement prices soon enough.

Thanks, JohnFredC, and no worries Innuendo. At this point I should bring mouser in to get his thoughts on this.
4633
OK - looks like wincmd.ini is the culprit - I'll try that.

Nope... I've tried the TCUP forums, but haven't gotten anywhere. I'll have to try posting there, I guess. Of course, I could just wait for the next TCUP installer to come out, but where is the fun in that?!
4634
Darwin, you would just install TC 7.02 over Ultima Prime. The TC installer is smart enough to preserve all the existing Ultima Prime settings.

Hmmm... tried this and it if I specify that TC install to the UP folder, everything works great except for the fact that all of the special TCUP menus are lost and I can't see how to get them back. I'll have to reinstall TCUP and wonder what file(s) I'll then need to backup (and then restore) before installing TC to avoid this? Anyone know?

Maybe we should consider writing a File Managers review, toghether. As stated in an earlier post, I love File Managers and have played with a lot of them. However, I'm not really knowledgeable enough about the category to tackle a review by myself. Actually, given how complex they can be, it may be difficult for any individual to do it alone. Still, what do you think? Perhaps teams could be made up to work on one or two options together (JohnFredC and urlwolf for TC, maybe we can persuade nudel to write up DOpus, mitzevo for xplorer2, zaine for xyplorer, lanux for servant salamander - acutally, I think there is a mini-review by someone else that could be dusted off)... Hard to coordinate, of course, but worth the effort. As you'll note, DC reviews don't tend to do more than offer "best in class" recommendations - it's not necessary to rank File Managers hierarchically... OK, I'm free associating now...

PS Neglected to mentino Innuendo's 30-40 File Manager list, which might be a good launching point for this.

Right - coffee! Thanks for reminding me. A pot is waiting for me downstairs... waking up at 4:30 am is TOO early (but with kids, a constant reality).

Armando - you have to configure WordToys via the new "toys" menu. Don't forget to click on the "save settings" button at the bottom of the menu when you're done confguring it.

Yes Armando - I'm also addicted to Word processors (office suites, really), notetakers, and PIMS... :-[

PS One of the cool things about DC in general and the Notetaking thread in particular is that we often get developers dropping by to discuss their applications. Nevf in the notetaking thread is the author of Surfulater, DonL posts frequently about XYPlorer in other threads, likewise aignes is the author of WebsiteWatcher, nagar writes DirectAccess, Dennis Nazarenko
Tidy Start Menu and Vista Start Menu, and there are lots of others.

Ah, Victoria... I live in Courtenay, about 2.5 hours north of there (but was born in the Royal Jubliee and wound up back in Victoria for university)... Anyway, you all may be interested in this notetaking overview by superboyac. It's a synthesis of a thread he started a while back that has the distinction of being the longest thread on these boards. Anyway, and finally, there is a separate discussion of his overview here. Treedbnotes pro gets a mention or two in the original (long) thread. Worth a look over anyway.

Taking a look now, PhilB66. Looks interesting. I'm with Dirhael - in addition to having a serious File Manager obsessoin, I love text editors as well...
4642
Thanks for the tip, JohnFredC. I like that behaviour WRT drag and drop as well. It makes sense.
4643
Duh, doh! (Darwin smacks forehead and utters an oath!) - what a dolt I am. TC's installer explicitly asks for an installation directory... What can I say? I'm operating on three and a half hours sleep (yeah, like that's an excuse!).
4644
Hmm... tempting, very tempting. I might just have to give that a try. I should let everyone know, publically, that I've shamed myself once again and purchased TC (happened last night, actually). I'm up to 10 File Managers...

My name is Michael and I have a problem. :o
4645
Hi urlwolf - TC is at 7.02 while Ulitma Prime is still shipping with 7.01 and installs everything into its own directory. How do you deal with updates to a given component - can you install it individually or do you have to wait for the UP installer to be updated? Just curious. Running TC now and am quite intrigued (and a little bit intimidated  :o)...

Ha ha. Welcome to Donationcoder, blakelyg! I'm from Vancouver Island so we're getting a healthy number of Canadians in this thread. Interesting. Anyway, like you, I am hopeful that the wind will change and all will be well. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Interestingly, when I purhcased my copy of Do-Organizer, the download that I received and have installed is version 3.0.9.7 dated July 9, 2007. When I check for updates I get a an offer to "update" to a version a month older, 3.0.8. Trying to find out about this was what alerted me to all not being well in GemX land... Like blakelyg, my e-mails and DSM attempts have gone unanswered.

Bummed. TipTop I'm sorry that you weren't kept in the loop, either. You were (are, we hope) such a big part of what made the forums a great place to visit/get help. I'm stunned that you weren't given any more info than the rest of us. OK, let me rephrase that - you were given just as little information as the rest of us!

Anyway, to you, to ido2!!!, to beldeamon, and to BethUK (though as noted this is a year late) Welcome to donationcder!

I wonder if Zaine is reading this thread because if I remember rightly he did have Texnotes or Do-Organizer down on his Great Software List at one point - but it may have been removed later. Or I may just be going insane! (Which has always been a possibility)..!

No, you're not insane! Zaine loved TexNotes Pro and highly recommended it until about this time last year, at which point he removed it from The Great Software List. He's pared the list down a lot and the notetaking section in particular is a lot thinner than it used to be. I suspect that this is because he really likes OneNote. He also had very good things to say about Do-Organizer here. Scroll down to find his post - he made a number of them, but the posting on September 12, 2006 was particularly glowing.

All of this is too bad, but I'm glad it's bringing people to this thread and hopefully someone will eventually be able to enlighten us all. ido2!!!'s rather suggests that there might have been/be some internal problems within the company - disagreements over the direction of development, perhaps, that have led to this situation.

beldeamon, I am SO glad that when I finally decided to buy Do-Organizer (about a month ago after dithering for over a year) I elected to use the mailer part as a backup to Outlook 2003 rather than to replace it. I have Outlook so "tweaked" that I didn't have the heart to start from scratch with Do-Organizer and decided to set it up to download my messages but to leave them on the server so that Outlook could do the same. I'm really glad that I did because I actually prefer Outlook (my arguments in the gemx forums remain the same - the do-organizer base should probably have been Scribe and the e-mail component should be a paid module...) for e-mail. C'est la vie.

I really hope that they get their act together and continue to develop their software... So don't we all.

Wow! TipTop is here - his post went in while I was typing the above. Welcome tiptop I'm posting this and will then read your post.

Wow, my pin looks lonely...
Heads up, Darwin, you're getting competition for rulership of Canada!

I'm not worried - I'll take all comers! I'm just polishing off my acceptance speech and the lyrics to my new anthem  :-*
