Hmm... I actually forgot to search for this so will take quick look now. In the interim, Bulk Rename Utility will allow you to do this very easily:

Alt+Tab is nice. It's the only alternative to the default alt-tab function in XP that still tempts me. I, too, after using a number of enhancers (Entbloess/Reflex Vision, Top Desk - demo only, Windows Powertoy, WindowsFX, and a number of other, now forgotten, freeware enhancers) prefer the lightweight approach. I still have Alt+tab installed and will give it another shake. What I find usually happens is that I am unable to see much benefit in return for the hit on my system resources (of which I am insanely jealous) and wind up uninstalling, or at least disabling.

Thanks justice - that looks interesting. I've not really gotten into online apps yet, I guess I'm a bit old-school and a) remember what a disaster they were ten years ago and b) still get ulcers thinking about security!

There's also "Organize my Electronic Filing Cabinet for Dummies". If you're in Canada and you have a Bank of Montreal Mosaik Mastercard, you can get the Personal version for free (or 50% off the Professional version - final price $17.99). I haven't tried it, but it might do the job.

as a good DC netizen, i have duly casted my vote.. btw, Darwin it should be Altap/Servant Salamander.. as "Servant" is freeware while the paid version has been changed to "Altap".. :)

Doh! Who knew? OK, you did... but I didn't. Right, off to correct it now. Thanks for pointing that out.

OK. The poll is up here.

General Software Discussion / What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by Darwin on September 12, 2007, 12:25 AM »
At tinjaw's urging, I'm creating this poll to try to get a sense of what File Management solution(s) DCer's are using. So, cast a vote and let the numbers tell their tale!

If you vote "other" please let us know what solution you are using.

Finally, what we're really after here is your PRIMARY File Management solution, so only go for option 12 ("Variety is the spice of life - I use mutliple File Managers!!") if you well and truly DO use multiple different File Managers DAILY (I have about 10 installed myself, but really only use one regularly).

Thank you,

Mike

I suspect with any mouse - it's just a utility (though if memory serves it also installs the drivers for MS mice).

I still prefer books to e-books even though printed books are so 15th century. Just call me a Luddite.
yeah me too, its a tactile thing i spose, could be why porn is so disappointing  :)

Yup - me too +1

Hey, missed that the first time around, lanux. Thanks for reminding us. That's probably going to be good for playing with the keyboard (I hate simulating driving cars and flying planes with keyboard shortcuts, but somehow shifting my weight on a bike by manipulating the arrow keys makes sense... probably just me  ;D)!

Wow - I sense that this is a bigger deal than it appears at first flush. Giving painting capabilities to IrfanView will mean that many people truly do not need to install anything else. I haven't had IrfanView installed in a long time, but this is worth checking out - thanks for pointing it out to us, Lanux

Cool! I wish I had a wheel and pedals... Probably high time I bought some. Now that I have kids, I stick very close to the speed limit and curse at yahoos that pass me when I'm doing 10 clicks over the speed limit on the highway. I LOVE speed, though, and would really like to get my fix digitally - too old and scared to get it while I'm driving these days (can't afford to risk my life anymore and can't afford speeding tickets, increased insurance premiums and, oh, yeah I'd really hate to hurt someone else). This game might be just the ticket!

Get on down the road, take the time to get familiar with Vista, spring for new hardware if what you use is not supported in Vista. But get with the 21st century.

XP is a 21st century OS!  :P

Er... on reflection, he's probably meaning that what he perceives to be the original "orthodox file manager", Norton Commander was released about 21 years ago. Seems his website has been up and running since 1997 though... that's still a fair length of time for a continuous web presence.

Holy crap, batman! The author claims that the resource has been around for 21 years! Wow. It is comprehensive and I was entirely unaware of its existence. Thanks, urlwolf for directing us to it.

Thanks PhilB66 - didn't occur to me to go looking for the latest version...  :-[ AFAICT I'm going to have to install it to find out. I've downloaded it, but there is no compelling reason for me to install it, so I think I'll just let sleeping dogs lie. I uninstalled it because I didn't think it added anything to counterbalance the hit my system took on resources. I doubt that the latest version is any different. It was just idle curiosity...

OK tinjaw - let me feed my ravenous toddlers and I'll create a poll while they're burping contentedly to themselves and are held captive by Dora the Explorer...

Congratulations, Carroll, on both the 200th post and the update to Compact Autorunner. I will be trying out Compact Autorunner in the future, as I am hoping to be given permission to submit my PhD as a DVD that I'd like to tart up with a nice html front end that autoloads from DVD insertion...

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package
« Last post by Darwin on September 11, 2007, 05:30 PM »
So far, knock on wood (Darwin raps his own head and enjoys the dull echo the action produces. Ooohhh...), I've had good luck with SpySweeper with Antivirus. I realise that others have had terrible problems with it but it's brilliant on my notebook (SpySweeper standalone really cripples my wife's notebook though, and it's got faster RAM, a bigger harddrive, dedicated graphics and a much faster processor - weird - I wonder if there is a conflict with AVG Pro, which she is running as her antivirus?). Sophos *seems* to be well respected in the AV sphere, so I assume that I am in good hands.

Very strange, Dan. This is one of those times when I really wish I could "be there" in person to take a look at your setup. I'm sure we could figure it out. C'est la vie. I'm glad you've got a working solution, even if it is a workaround.

Two quetions: is that YOU jumping off the back of an aircraft, nighted? And is that feature available in Vista only or is it available in XP as well? I have a Microsoft mouse but have long since uninstalled the intellipoint software.
4625
Dang! I've seen this as an option somewhere... I'll dig around and find out where (I've no doubt that it will probably turn out to be nothing whatsoever to do with File Renaming, but so bit it).
