General Software Discussion / Re: Printliminator
« Last post by Curt on December 24, 2009, 06:03 PM »
I feel a little strange, reading some of the comments. The Printliminator (PL) video is playing smooth and has a four times as large area as the PWYL video which is so small it is almost wortless. I can find no feature in PWYL that is not equally good or better handled by PL. Furthermore, I find Printliminator to be both faster and easier to use - if one can remember a hotkey combination. I cannot think anyone made a judgement without first trying, so I guess another mistake must have happened.

General Software Discussion / Re: Infix PDF Editor now at version 4
« Last post by Curt on December 19, 2009, 05:59 PM »
I can see now that I forgot to tell the difference between Standard and Professional; I merely told the difference between version 3 and 4. Actually I blame my lose of focus on the Iceni site; it is a little messy, with many hard-to-find links, etcetera.

Infix Professional offers all of the editing features of Infix Standard and Form Filler plus the following:

Do more with PDF graphics
Infix Pro includes tools for handling graphics such as grouping, hiding and locking. It also adds the ability to edit and create clipping masks plus a vertical ruler to allow easier object alignment.

Impose / Place PDF
Re-use your PDFs as components in new documents by simply placing them on the page. Resize, rotate and move as you would any other object. Since Infix can also convert any kind of document into a PDF, you can effectively import any kind of document into a PDF.

CMYK colour picker and swatches catalogue
Professionals rely on CMYK colours so Infix Pro offers a CMYK colour picker. It also includes a catalogue of all colours used in the document - the swatch catalogue. The can be used to maintain a consistent colour palette while editing a PDF.

Translate PDFs using CAT tools and XML
Export a PDF as XML for translation using your favourite CAT tools. Then import the translated XML back into the PDF. Infix will fit the translated text back into the place where it originally came from, minimising the need to adjust page layouts.

Works with Infix Server
Make PDF templates for Infix Server. Tag areas of text for replacement using the fielding facility. This also enables you to specify the kind of reflow that will occur during replacement. Tag images specifying the cropping and alignment to be used when replaced.

Advanced PDF text fitting
Whether for Infix Server templates or general artwork, advanced text fitting ensures your copy looks its best. Infix Pro offers complete control over fitting enabling you to control which metrics get altered during the fitting process. It can even perform text fitting across connected text blocks.

PDF Pre-flighting
For piece of mind, Infix Pro can check for low-resolution images, non CMYK artwork and over-set text using the simple pre-flight checking tool. It also checks for problems when preparing PDF templates for use with Infix Server such as font embedding and mapping issues.

Search & Replace across PDF documents
With the powerful batch mode, Infix Pro can search across multiple PDFs or entire directories full of PDFs. It will work through all documents, leaving original documents in-tact and keeping track of any errors or problems during processing.

PDF Search and replace by font, colour or size
More advanced search criteria allow you to limit searches by the size, colour or font used for text. Useful for changing text in headers/footers without disturbing similar content in the main body of a PDF.

Conversion of text to outlines
For guaranteed printing success or to stop any further edits of a document, Infix Pro can convert all contained text into vectors.

Lock-down PDF elements in templates
Produce PDFs for clients with restrictions allowing objects to be locked, moved only vertically (to ensure alignment isn't altered), restrict the colour palette that can be used and the fonts that may be employed.

Wow, Miles, you really are ahead! (sorry!!!) Even though I have 1024x768 I didn't even have to change the mouse-clicks! Thank You!!

Also interesting to learn a little about au3... I have never been in contact with autoit before, so I had to first surf for info.  ;)

Thanks, but as far as I can understand it merely gives priority to programs, applications. The same job my Task Manager already is doing.

A priority control application sets the base priority for a specified application. An application with a high priority takes precedence over lower priority applications.

If you go to Control Panel >System >Advanced > Performance >Settings >Advanced, you will see the box from my image. Here you can change if Windows should have the processor weight applications or background services the most. This is the setting I want to toggle in an easy manner; per default it is buried way too deep.
4511
This may be a little difficult for me to explain, I am afraid, because I hardly know the Danish terms and certainly not the English. But I got to ask myself: Do I feel lucky? And just now the answer is Yes, punk!

Most of the time it suits me fine to have Vista giving priority to the programs. But I have more than 6.000 images in a single folder, and to wait for Vista to refresh the thumbnails is a p@|n in the @$$. For this reason I would very much appreciate if it could be made easy to toggle between "Give priority to Programs" and "Give priority to Background Services". A simple AHK script.exe, maybe.

Please?

Curt, please, what advantages does 2010 have over 2008 for you?
I was curious too -

- none, yet, for the very simple reason that I am trial-testing Microsoft Office 2010 at the moment. I only upgraded SoftMaker  to have it! I have only tried TextMaker.

which has to lead to the question:-
are you trialling MS Office because somethings missing in Softmaker Office ?

- no, I am trialling because I could! I have MS Office 2003 Standard, but cannot afford "at the moment" to upgrade to version 2010, so the beta trial of Ultimate 2010 was a fine chance to see what I am missing...plus, the beta stage may make the trial period a little longer than normal.

What I like the best about SoftMaker 2010 is the speed and smoothness. In SoftMaker I can have my document all done before MS is ready to even begin! I am not really in a position to talk about specific features.

I use (Tracker) PDF XChange Pro 2 as my default viewer. I have not yet given myself any reason as to why I purchased the pro version, because I use Nitro PDF Pro 6 as virtual creator. It is quite expensive but also in another league. Among many features Nitro Pro includes a Word>Pdf converter that really sets the standard! I got a license for free via for-free-on-internet.com.

When it comes to virtual printing, I will chose Nitro if the job doesn't requite any editing of the file, because Nitro has some settings that makes it fast to use. Infix is too slow to use as primary print-to-pdf because it (always?) will pop up before saving, but it is the fastest to use if you know in advance that you want to edit the print, before saving as pdf.

Hmm... in my head it is early morning here, and I am not yet all awake.

General Software Discussion / Infix PDF Editor now at version 4
« Last post by Curt on December 17, 2009, 07:11 PM »
In the early summer I recieved a free license from Iceni for Infix version 3 Standard because I posted about it. By posting again, here&now, I am not trying to upgrade my license from 3 to 4, because I can say already that the "Professional" version is what I want; and they don't give that one away. If you want to know more about Infix, after reading this, here, it may help to read the first thread.

Since summer I have only used the program a few times, all though I was very impressed with it. The problem that stopped me from using it more often was  the amount of time Infix will use to load all of my fonts every time it should open a PDF file; it was simply too SLOW (I have many fonts)! Otherwise I think it is a VERY fine and totally easy-to-use program. The guys at Infix have of course been told about the problem from more people than me, and now they have launched version 4, with shorter font loading time EDITED: and a bunch of new features.

http://www.iceni.com/infix-pro.htm

Why upgrade to version 4 ?

    * Fill-out PDF versions of traditional paper forms
    * Direct document translation using XML import/export
    * Convert any document to PDF using the Infix PDF Printer
    * Edit the hidden text in OCR documents
    * Support for 20+ languages (spellcheck and hyphenation)
    * Restyled user interface plus support for Vista & Windows 7
    * Improved support for leader dots in tables of contents
    * Faster font loading
    * Support for latest versions of PDF
    * Supports Windows Vista & Windows 7
    * Automatic updates

Plus all the other features of Infix Professional.
-Iceni Infix
Who can upgrade?
Any previous version of Infix can be upgraded to Pro for one price - $59.
Single-user Pro license    $159
Upgrade from Infix (any version) $59
5-User Bundle $649
Enterprise (unlimited licenses) $2,995

Infix (Standard) Single-user license $99
5-User Bundle $445

The version 3 that I already have is a so-called Standard version, but listed at $99 it is quite expensive, some may think. Nevertheless I think the Professional version 4, that I am testing now, at $159 may be an even better deal (well, shouldn't it be?!) because of certain features (that really should be standard in Standard !). One is the "automated text filling" (see video), but there are plenty.

The best feature of Infix may be the complete likeness with a normal rich text editor. It is almost incredible that Infix should be the only PDF editor that actually looks like an editor, (but it apparently is), because this was the very "feature" that caught my interest in the first place - I wanted a PDF editor that I could figure out how to use! Surely I cannot be the only one wanting this? Infix is just as easy to use as any rich text editor. Fantastic!

I don't agree with Infix on their price politics, (though they have lowered Pro from $199 to $159), but nevertheless I have already decided that I am going to pay the necessary $59 to upgrade my Standard 3 to version Professional 4; at this price I can strongly recommend it. At $159 the need for a professional editor must be present, unless of course you have more money than I have, for this. However, if you have a lot of fonts installed, you may not want to close Infix between jobs; it is much faster than before  but still loads the fonts a little (too) slow  if there are many. If you only have the default number of fonts you may not notice the loading time at all.

... I'm waiting impatiently for DataMaker to be released ...

I remember reading about DataMaker some years ago, but it seems SoftMaker has given up on writing it. Maybe BasicMaker has substituted? SoftMaker will of course say NO! because they are still "developing" DataMaker:

SoftMaker is currently working on these applications:

DataMaker for Windows
DataMaker is the ideal end-user database: Open any database and create queries, forms, reports, labels, even small applications with ease. Just use it, no need to write code.
Please note: DataMaker is not shipping yet. The non-public alpha test is already running; the public beta test will start later.

We are blessed to know that it will be a fantastic program - I mean, several years in development?! Meanwhile, I now have this BasicMaker. Perhaps, one day in the future I may even find a job for it.

BasicMaker 2010 automates SoftMaker Office: it lets you write BASIC macros that complete recurring tasks in TextMaker and PlanMaker.

BasicMaker is compatible with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). It allows you to write small scripts or programs that execute commands in TextMaker and PlanMaker. If you have repetitive tasks in SoftMaker Office that you wish to automate, BasicMaker is the tool for you.

Syntaxwise, BasicMaker is modeled after Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), and its OLE Automation object model is a subset of Microsoft Office's. If you already have experience in macro writing with Microsoft Office, you'll be up to speed with SoftMaker Office macros in no time at all.

Care for a small sample?

Print "Name of current document:"
Print tm.ActiveDocument.FullName

If this looks familiar to you, you are on your way to becoming a proficient macro developer for SoftMaker Office.

On the other hand, if this looks a bit baffling, that's not a problem either: A detailed electronic manual will introduce you to macro programming with BasicMaker.

Note: If you wish to create scripts for SoftMaker Office in other languages than BASIC, you can! TextMaker and PlanMaker can be scripted from nearly all programming languages, such as Python, Perl, Ruby, C++, and Delphi.

I am pleased with Office 2010, but if you don't need to have the newest I would say Office 2008 may be a better deal; it is for certain worth every penny...:

Download SoftMaker Office 2008 for free, and SoftMaker donates money!

Talk about donationware...

Softmaker Office 2008 is available for free, with the added bonus of the Softmaker company donating 10 Euro cents for each completed download! Great office suite and great deal!

General Software Discussion / Re: Alt-tab replacement ?
« Last post by Curt on December 15, 2009, 07:27 PM »
I didn't quite like VistaSwitcher. Wheel+rightclick is too difficult for my fingers, but the program is less useful without it. I use Alt+Tab whenever I only have two or three windows open. If more windows are open, I will click the Window Switcher icon in my Quick Launch area (which is True Launch Bar) but I have no idea from where I got it; I have no folder or installed program with such name! It probably came with the computer, powered by Fujitsu Siemens. To scroll, I'll only have to scroll..., yeah, but to select any new window, I'll have to either let go of the mouse, to press Enter, or move the mouse and click the window. So also Window Switcher is less than perfect.

Edited:
I should tell that also the desktop is a window, so if I click this virtual desktop window, all open normal windows will be minimized at once.

just For The Record

I noticed in Chip (german) computer mag
that Avanquest's Perfect Image 11
get's tops of a short list of best-of "Image-Programme"

I just won a license for Avanquest Perfect Image 12, over at Ghacks' Christmas giveaway, so I am pleased to read that at least version 11 once was considered good; it makes it likely that my version 12 also is fine. I was of course a little worried that Perfect Image never has been mentioned here at DC, except for these two posts!

I get it!  It's a riddle.  Cool.  Anyone?

- no, I don't have it, (I couldn't even find a way to purchase it from the Russian spoken pages), but I am eager to learn! The Russian SLO.RU states Light Alloy to be freeware, so the answer to the riddle may not be too difficult, for Russians... (unless the SLO version is a special SLO-Russian version).
