I'm generally poor with interpreting these things and the comment did allude to God giving life to man but to me, the story represents the tale of rebellion, regret and reassurance.
Funny.  That is the bulk of the story of many religions.

General Software Discussion / Re: Specs for new pc?
« Last post by steeladept on June 10, 2010, 02:23 PM »
Personally, while I agree in general with what is said, I like TigerDirect's approach.  They will sell you a pre-bundled, pre-tested kit of hardware that you then build.  It is sort of in between the HP/DELL/WHOEVER machines that you buy and use, and the labor intensive research and determine what you want to build.  I learned a long time ago, building your own can look awesome on paper, and just have conflict after conflict that (if you are lucky) provides mediocre performance.  I once built a machine that spec'd twice as good as an off-the-shelf HP at about the same price, yet the HP out performed it because of the conflicts and issues between manufacturers.  It eventually got worked out and I still use that machine today, but it was a hassle and it never significantly outperformed the HP's & Dell's with similar specs, even after the bugs were worked out.

Now a days, I buy bundles that meet my minimum requirements and buy additional parts to fit.  For example, I recently looked at one of the TigerDirect bundles that had 2GB of Memory among other things.  I figured this, plus 2 more GB of memory and a video card (instead of the onboard video) was all I would need to make a machine I was looking for at the time.  Total cost, about $600.  About half of that was the video card. (Obviously not cutting edge stuff here, so that accounts for some too).  Just wanted to offer that as another option to the Newegg research and buy method....

For editing the file association, the icon, and all the "verbs" associated with the file type, NirSoft FileTypesMan is the best I've seen. I know Vista and Windows 7 cripples some of this functionality, so I went looking, and it was pretty ugly out there until I found it.
Doh, I keep forgetting about this.  Maybe this time I will remember to download and install it once I get home....
455
Can't remember how to do it any other way now.  BUT for windows XP I can always go into the "My Computer" icon and in explorer choose the Tools>Folder Options... menu item.  There (and only there incidentally from what I can see), you can change the registered file types under the file types tab.  In the Advanced button, there is the option of changing the icon for that extention as well as how it behaves (what it opens, where it prints to, etc.) as well as what the default option on click is.  I use it rarely, but when I do, it is a godsend.

Hope that helps point you in the right direction - assuming you didn't already know all of this and it is still available on newer versions of windows.... ;)

but that method doesn't really allow me to set my own custom icons (unless i've overlooked something).

eg. i set my own custom icon for the .url extension - regardless of which is the default browser.
I know it did in WinXP (for me at least, though it didn't stop them from rehijacking your settings).  I would make a guess that it is the same, just not easy to find out how.  Dang, now that I try in WinXP, I can't remember where to make the changes....  I will post again when I find out how - Maybe Windows didn't change that method.  At least it is worth a shot...

Screenshot Captor / Re: Screenshot Captor Splice Tool

just a reminder, SC will let you drag and drop images into and out of it's thumbnail panel.

and i think you can pass a filename on commandline when calling SC to have it switch to that image file's directory and load that image -- so that does what you asked for veign, i think.

also, dont forget to use the Save+ button, to save the image with an incremented filename -- useful for preserving originals.

Yeah, yeah... :P

I always forget about that.  That is why I do it the way I do. :-[

Great little feature.

Why don't you release that as a standalone application?  I would use it just for that.  Basically let me open an image, perform splices and then resave out.
You already can, I do stuff like this all the time with SC.  You just move the pic to the screenshot folder (or open SC and navigate your screenshot folder to where the file is), and then edit it.  That said, it also explains why I requested an Open file option that I think Mouser probably just forgot to add... ;)

Interesting....Sounds like a trial to be had  :D

Just got to find a good .Net app to try out - oh, and a decent platform to run Mono on.  I have my PC down at the moment while I rebuild my computer room (went down to the studs).  I am almost ready to bring it back online, but until then, I am stuck with the work laptop that I can't install it on.

interesting, but what makes them so bad?

Tables are not bad at all, it is using tables in Word instead of using the right tool.  You stated that tables are not spreadsheets, and this is true, but spreadsheets are tables.  Nothing but tables.  If most of your work is in a table, why would you use a word processor to make them?

You hit the nail on the head when you said "used sensibly".  The problem is most people do not use them sensibly in Word.  They know Word, they know they can insert a table, so they insert table upon table into document upon document when it would be much simpler, quicker, and easier for all involved if it was an Excel file.

The reason this is so poignant to me is, as a printer, I end up having to fix all these documents all the time, just to get them to print right.  Because these are internal customers, I can't charge back my time, but I do get dinged for not producing.  Simple changes such as using the right tool would allow me to be more productive, the requester to be more productive, and produce a more manageable, effective document.

Thank you for making my point on the tabstops, AndyM.  I would have to say, though, much of the reasons provided for Word being "easier" is because of lack of knowledge (in many cases anyway).  Specifically you state:

among other reasons, easiest way to do certain kinds of underlining.  also handy for forms, both printed and fill-in-the-blanks.  Unless you are using VBA to do forms in Excel (powerful but much more to learn), Word is much handier for fill in the blank stuff.  Without using tables it's almost impossible to keep variable length fields from changing your line-length and therefore your pagination.

I can understand the underlining thing, though I feel there has got to be better ways to do this (I never had an issue with the way Word works here, however, so I have never needed to try).  As for forms, I have, without exception, found Excel to be easier and much better at building forms (though a dedicated form builder is even nicer).  The only catch is making sure you size your cells correctly, but that is easier to do than you might think, you just type everything out and merge cells as needed.  You end up with an Excel file that has probably something like 40 columns on one 8.5x11 page, each only a few pixels wide, but it works well and you automatically avoid the variable length field problem you mention.

Word tables can be handy for entering data or for composing/designing when you know you will have some kind of row/column setup but not sure what the final layout will be.  The kind of thing I have in mind would be tedious using tabs (which most definitely have their place - tables aren't always the best tool).

Word was never designed for final layout inline with composition anyway, so this really is something of a non-issue.  If you create the data, then apply formatting, you are following the workflow Word was designed for.  If you are creating the layout and then filling in the content, tables are much more efficient, and that is the way Excel is designed and should be used - hence my statement about using the correct tool for the job.

Generally it's easier to line things up with a table than with tabs.  Except when it's not.

Well stated.  ;)

As for the rest of what you are saying, I guess I can agree with it since it is rather subjective anyway.  (What is easier to you is not necessarily easier for others).  I never really got heavy into formatting anything other than the text itself, and that is equally easy in Excel as it is in Word.  I can imagine a situation where you want certain text flowing around a picture so, I guess there are some limited uses for it - and even with everything I stated, I have used small, simple tables in Word (Very small mind you, 3x4 at the largest).  It is just so many people use Word when they should use Excel and Excel when they should use Access.  Excel is not a database, even if it has some of that functionality, just like Word is not a spreadsheet even though it can contain tables.

Now getting back to the OP issue -

I'm trying to make a glossary.  Nothing fancy, but there is formatting involved.  two columns, bold words, normal definitions, headers are formatted.  But there are a lot of items.

If this is all you are looking for, just make the glossary in a single column as normal.  Apply all your text formating next.  Then highlight it all and make it two column.  The only thing left is to make the headers which should be (oddly enough) in the page header.  Word is made for this type of thing without resorting to tables or any special styling.

Developer's Corner / Re: Recommend a general purpose IDE

Doh, someone beat me to it.  For every one of your requirements, especially the multiplatform, and the fact that they are small programs, Notepad++ is the way to go!  I don't really program much, but when I do I use TextPad because that is what we have at work.  It's clip library is a great feature as well that really makes it worth using if you are only on Windows.

When I do similar things at home, I found Notepad++ almost as easy to use and it is free (and portable).  Many of it's features are actually slightly nicer in my opinion to TextPad, but I haven't found a clip-library type of feature that is comparable.  I miss this greatly when I use Notepad++ as it speeds development significantly.  I suppose I could create something similar on a different tab, but it still isn't the same.  If the clip-library isn't a big deal to you, then I would say TextPad isn't the tool you are looking for.

As for Netbeans, I used it in the past, so I though I am talking about it, it may have expanded significantly since I used it last.  That said, my experience with Netbeans is it is great if you are making Java specific GUI's.  Otherwise it is just another Java platform that works well, but not exceptional.  It definitely does not (well did not) do all required languages easily or treat them equally well.  Moreover, it is (was) rather bloated as IDE's go.  In general, Notepad++ (and other similar apps) are over glorified Text Editors that have some of the most common IDE features to extend their capabilities.  Netbeans, Eclipse, et. al. are more full featured and purpose specific; but do not really add much for the small programs and/or languages you talk about.  In fact, even in school, I took a Java course where the instructor specifically suggested TextPad or Notepad++ because we would not use the features of Netbeans until the last week of school and they were far more difficult to setup and use.  The only feature we used during that last week of school was the GUI creation, because you can put it together visually, then code the functions of each section later.  That was all we used Netbeans for.  TextPad/Notepad++ was used for everything else in the curriculum.

Living Room / Re: Cell phone number porting

Believe me, I understand.  Let me know how it goes, as it is one I have been considering for when I can upgrade in the fall.  Hopefully they will be caught up by then.

As for when to expect the phone to go dead, I would expect it to be the ship date (June 4 in your case).  If it doesn't drop by then, they may ship it without a number and then transfer your number over the phone (must be from a different phone) after you get it.  I really don't know how they do so through the mail.  What I do know is they can not port the number while it is in service.  Behind the scenes, they turn off your current phone, port the number, register it to their network, then assign it to the phone via the ESN number.

Mono is an OSS implementation of the .NET framework, so that developers can develop applications using .NET architecture without the .NET framework (and so that they can be cross platform).  If a developer uses mono to develop, then mono will be the framework that you have to deploy.  If a developer uses .net to develop, then .net will be the framework that you have to deploy.

For more information, see http://en.wikipedia..../Mono_%28software%29
I don't believe this is exactly correct, and I didn't see anywhere in the link that would change my mind.  However, I am open to more information proving me wrong if this is indeed the case.

From my understanding, if you use Mono, SOME .Net developed applications *Should* work, though compatability is far from complete.  Moreover, as an OSS implimentation, it is by design at least a generation behind .Net development.

Mono for Windows makes little sense to me unless you are using (or trying to use) an application developed specifically in Mono that doesn't work with .Net.  I respect your not willing to discuss your reasons, but I will still put forth my 2 cents about the issue in general.  If you are against using .Net due to bloat, the need for the framework, or some other similar issue, then I don't see the point of Mono as it suffers from the same things.  It is a framework that mimics most of .Net's functionality for the targeted version of .Net.  If it is a more philosophical reason, well then I can't argue in favor of .Net at all as that is why you are avoiding it.

Personally, I like the idea of Mono better specifically because it *CAN* be cross-platform (and no other reason really).  However, the implementation of it has really not been up to my expectation, so I still don't use it yet.  For this reason, I have taken to a lot of the RIA platforms, Silverlight/Moonlight in particular.  It isn't quite up to par either, but it is more complete in my view than Mono.

Now that I am far afield, I will stop.  I hope that helps.

Verizon does not use SIM cards.  To my knowledge, only T-Mobile and AT&T do right now, and even then, not on all phones.  One of my gripes about Verizon, because SIM cards make life MUCH EASIER.  To answer the question, you will be without a phone number for a few days if they send it ready to go.  The only other option I know of is the one I use and that is to take the phone to a store (or authorized reseller of Verizon products) and have them port the number for you.  I don't know how likely or even doable this is, but I always buy from the store so the number switches immediately without interruption.

I have to ask why Tables are so "fundamental"?  One thing that annoys me to no end, as an IT guy AND a printer, is people using the wrong tool for the job just because they are comfortable in that environment.  Now I know you are willing to stretch, but many are not.  TABLES ARE BAD,BAD,BAD! (In Word).  Word is meant to be a word processor, not a spreadsheet.  If you are just formatting a report, that is one thing, that is what tab stops are for, but if you want form filled tables, then it is really the wrong tool.  Microsoft adds these features because of requests, but that doesn't mean they SHOULD be added.  Excel is designed around tables and should be used for that purpose.  I only miss the Binder tool Microsoft used to have that allowed you to combine pages from tools like Word and Excel into a single manuscript.</rant>

Now back to the original program....

Why would you need tables in your Word document?

Wasn't really too worried about it.  Heck, it is still in development anyway.  If that stretches out and a help file is added and features keep being added and whatnot, it may be the new year before full release...

Unfortunately, most "lifetime" licenses are only for the lifetime of the offer.  >:(

It's guaranteed for Life! Yours, ours, or this promotion - whichever comes first.  :P
I too learned this the hard way and is why I never buy lifetime licenses any more.  The real kicker for me was when one small company decided they weren't making enough money to make the product anymore, so they renamed it for the next release, called it a new product, and made it subscription only.  Needless to say, I don't use their software anymore - at least not anything newer than what I already have.

My thought for a third would be Opinion.  That way you can separate ideas that go in the other two from your opinions that may apply to both, one, or neither.  So that would end up with the catagories:

Professional
Personal

Interesting idea, but I can't really help.  I have no need I can think of right now for this type of application and you seem to cover the basics for any conceptual needs I could think of.

Yeah, thanks.  I already found out how - it works to $16 to be exact.  They priced it at 5-7 business days, though I could pay another $12 (I think) for 2 day shipping.  I was just hoping to get it sooner by downloading the bits tonight.  Guess I will be putting in the order and finishing next week.

Thanks

Living Room / Vista Downloads
« Last post by steeladept on May 20, 2010, 08:29 PM »
I have tried searching on HP's website, Microsoft's website, and then again here to see if I could find a reputable download for Vista.  So far, I have failed.  I tried then on Google and Bing, and keep getting directed to the Windows 7 download site and a bunch that I don't know about their reputation and am not willing to try since it is for a client's computer.

For reference, the reason I am looking for this is I have a "client" that has an HP laptop they bought with Vista Home Premium 32 on it.  The hard drive crashed and I can't seem to get to the recovery partition to copy out files to install on a new hard drive.  Of course the user never followed the HP suggestion for making a recovery disk, so I am so far out of luck.  What I am looking for is a simple ISO or similar download of Vista.  I have the license, just not the bits.  I can get a recovery disk from HP if needed, but I thought I would ask here first as it will take several days before I get their disk.  Unfortunately, I don't have my technet plus subscription anymore, so that isn't an option either.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

Now, if the development road map is still relatively the same as when I was there, v8.0 will be ported to OS X and Linux as well. Not sure though as I've not asked about that.

Now THAT would be awesome!  I have been using AlZip for a long time (version 4 or 5 if I remember correctly), and though 8 is a little simpler, it has everything that I needed WinRAR for that WinZip didn't supply.  WinRAR is nice, but AlZip is cheaper and easier for most uses.  In fact, I know what Renegade said above, but I really can not think of one thing that WinRAR does that AlZip can't do that anyone would need - unless there is some bizarre requirement for the compression to be in RAR format.  That said, if you already have WinRAR, I can't imagine any reason you would need anything else, unless, again, there is some sort of a format requirement that WinRAR can not create.
