Older Newsletters / Newletter for September 25 - Codename "Chatty Kathy"
« Last post by Darwin on September 25, 2007, 03:22 PM »
Newsletter for September 25th, 2007
Codename "Chatty Kathy"

"If you read nothing else on our site, read our BLOG"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Hi all. Darwin here with another overview of the past couple of weeks of activity on Donationcoder - and what a couple of weeks they've been! Wordzilla has worked his magic yet again by integrating the open source cgi:irc browser based IRC applet into the DonationCoder website. Yes! You too can participate in the IRC antics referred to in many a posting by simply clicking on the chat! link on the forum navigation bar. Drop by and join in the fun!

Donationcoder member app103 has been in the spotlight once again because of her excellent application Instant Boss , which was recently featured Lifehacker. App admits to being a bit overwhelmed by the attention and the kudos, but they are well deserved!  For another perspective on software development, and a peek into the mind of a developer, that dovetails nicely with app's comments, check out this thread on a blog essay about how "Programming can ruin your life".

2. We want your help and participation!

The DC ranks are swelling - a look at the stats for the total number of (both donating and non-donating) members reveals that 2758 members have joined since the last newsletter went out on Sept.8. - we're 88,912 strong as of 1 PM PST! The forum is a unique, vibrant, and friendly community in which DC members ask for and receive help, chat, and post about things of interest in the world of software, software development, the internet, and computing.  Don't be shy!  If you haven't posted before on the forum, here are some recent posts we'd love to have your participation in:

3. Official DonationCoder.com Application News

It's been a quiet month for DonationCoder software, but if you use our Screenshot Captor or FARR program, you might want to visit these threads on the forum:

4. Mini-Reviews by Members

Some nice mini-reviews by our members in the last two weeks, as well as another thread on possible ways to improve the way we handle reviews on the site, and a link to an offsite review of OCR tools.

5. September Discounts and Giveaway Winners

The winners of September's shareware giveaway have been announced on the forum, but supporting members still have until the end of the month to take advantage of September's discounts on BufferZone, Prevx, RecentX, and the wonderful TechSupportAlert (Gizmo) Newsletter subscription.

6. General Software Discussion

Software, software, software. If you're looking for a software solution, look no further than Donationcoder. Use Wordzilla's excellent new search feature to check if the software or category of software has been discussed on Donationcoder.  If not, post a request on the boards and someone will be able to give you some suggestions.  Most of the items below are freeware:

7. Living Room

Lots of content on the Donationcoder forum boards is not directly software related, but represent interesting finds made by DC members as the surf the web or requests for help in solving computer related problems.

8. Gaming

There is more to life, and Donationcoder.com, than the serious discussion of software. Here are some links to games. Take a look - you might find yourself enjoying one or two. Consider the guilty pleasure a much deserved break from reality - a chance to recharge your batteries, leaving your refreshed and better prepared to face reality upon your return.

9. Coding Snacks

One of the many advantages of frequenting a community populated by software enthusiasts, is that you are bound to get lots of suggestions for software solutions to workflow problems. However, another perk is that there are a high percentage of software coders among us and if all else fails you can post a request on the Coding Snack board and find out if anyone is willing to code a solution for you! Here are some recent requests. Have one of your own? Post it here .

10. Developer's Corner

As note above, many Donation Coder members and guests are software developers and they post about development issues. Software development needn't be mysterious - drop by the Developer's board and you might just find yourself working your way through assignments in one of the more than a dozen languages in the Self-Teaching Programming School. Have fun! And don't forget that we also use this section to discuss general issues in self-employment and time management, so you may find useful information even if you're not interested in programming.

11. Member Site Spotlight

In this issue of the newsletter, I thought it would be nice to highlight DC member relequestual's excellent freeware review site called Appaholic . relequestual only posts about software that he has personally used and can recommend - so add Appaholic to the list of sites that you visit for software recommendations and inspiration. You can read mouser's thread about Appaholic below.  Are you a member of DonationCoder.com with a website that doesn't get the attention you think it deserves? Let us know!

12. Site of the month

Just a reminder that lifehack.org is our site of the month for September 2007. They offer up advice and tips on how to make the best use of your time and how to accomplish things without spending a fortune. They are also are platform agnostic and always recommend interesting and helpful apps for Windows, Mac, and Linux users to try out. Content is upbeat, lively, and constantly changing. Check out their site and sign up for the RSS feed and start hacking yourself!

General Software Discussion / Re: Check&Get support blows chunks
« Last post by Darwin on September 25, 2007, 02:02 PM »
I suppose it's possible that the address that I have for them (support@...) has been hit so hard with spam that they no longer respond. Likewise with web based support and suggestion mail. I'll check the program's help file for alternative means of communication. I'm not at all pleased about the suggestions that Ken and I made going unanswered, but won't mind *too* much if Check&Get is still being developed and if some of our recommendations make it in one way or another...
4453
This is caused by the fact that your Windows XP CD contains updates that will be automatically installed when you run setup. This type of CD's will usually be from larger OEM suppliers (like Dell, HP, or others).

You cannot use this type of CD to create a slipstreamed SP2 install

The above quote, from this http://www.helpwithw...inxp-sp2-bootcd.html, speaks to why I can't slipstream Sp-2 onto an XP installation disc. What a steaming pile of... sorry, folks, not a good day in Darwin's little world - though Cranialscopical did fix my other, and more pressing, problem  :-*
4454
No it's not. I don't know what you're talking about!

PS thanks for pointing that out to me...
4455
Nope. Everything is the same. The only difference is that I have everything set on my notebook to English - Canada and the defaults are for English - United States. I've changed mine to the same and am rebooting now - see what happens (wish me luck)!

Aaaargh! I am losing my mind... There is now now East Asian Language support on this computer, all defaults are set and yet I am STILL seeing Korean dialogs in Paint. I might have to parlay this into an excuse to buy a new computer. No, wait, then I'd be stuck with Vista and bloody ArcGIS 9.1 won't RUN under Vista... (Darwin runs around naked on the lawn in front of his house screaming like a chcken. It's not pretty...).
4456
Hmmm... those code pages remain greyed out - I can't uncheck them.  I don't have access to a computer at the moment that is English only. I'll dig deeper...

I lied. My wife has two notebooks from work, both running XP Pro Sp-2 sitting in her home office that are basic installs with Office 2003 Pro, AV and antispyware installs only. Forgot about those and am off to check them now.

Thanks guys. Just to update things - I sent a pleasant e-mail enquiring after the state of things and requesting a response. Not a word... This was almost exactly three days ago...

General Software Discussion / Re: GemX - missing in action
« Last post by Darwin on September 25, 2007, 12:02 PM »
Looks increasingly like you are correct, Doublewitt. The lights are on at GemX but clearly no one is home. I've got multiple e-mails and DSM's into them (as I've no doubt others on this thread have as well) and I might as well be yelling into a void. Nothing.

Anyone know how to go about getting a credit card provider to take up the issue of a refund? The money's gone but it would be a) nice to have it back (obviously!) b) (more to the point) I'd like to rattle their cage a bit. This is unconscionable.
4459
PS Check out the Donationcoder review of Dialog Extenders.
4460
I now use the Enhanced Dialog component of Object Desktop. It's not available as a standalone product. Unfortunately, it is the only component that I use! I discovered ED after purhcasing OD, so can't really complain too much. Anyway, it's the best of the bunch in my opinion (I have current licences for XFilesDialog, File-Ex, and Direct Folders - none of which I have installed at the moment).
4461
Chris - you beauty! I hadn't done a thing until about a minute and a half ago WRT your suggestion about the context menu. I just turned to that suggestion now and though "Hmm... I wonder if MMM+ might have something to do with this and exited it. Boom! Morpheus works as advertised. Start MMM+ again and it crashes.

Thank you, thank you, thank you  :-*
4462
Nope... I STILL get Korean language text in dialogues. In Paint the title bar text is a series of question marks (?? ???? ??) but the dialogues themselves are in Hangul. I recall a Korean boy staying with us about a year ago and being very cavalier with an old notebook that I lent him. It ran Win2k (English) and he managed to convert EVERYTHING into Hangul (little bugger - didn't ask permission, just did it - my fault for not making his user account more limited - I did manage to correct everything, but still...) all titles, menu items, help files, dialogues, the log in screen, the lot. He googled it and figured out how... I guess I am going to have to do the same now. I suspect that some setting that he applied has also been inadvertently set on this computer. I suspect the Code Page Conversion tables - I unchecked everything before uninstalling the non-English languages, but of course all the East Asian languages were greyed out. I'll check that now.

Hmmm... those code pages remain greyed out - I can't uncheck them.  I don't have access to a computer at the moment that is English only. I'll dig deeper...
4463
Just to update the above - that didn't work, either  :( I haven't been able to look more closely at my registry, etc. but will try to do that today or tomorrow. This is one of those problems that doesn't affect my ability to use my computer a jot, but it's taken on the characterstics of an itch that I cannot ignore...

I'll try your suggestion posted in the 16 bit program thread that I started now - looks like a great idea (wish I'd thought of it but I went the other way, INSTALLING languages instead of uninstalling them)
4464
Hi tabletguy - Thank you for the suggestions . I've checked all of my settings and they match yours (I've played around with them in the past trying to resolve this issue). However, I've made a bunch of changes, "applied" them and then changed them back. I'm being asked to reboot and will do so and report back.
4465
Hi tabletguy. Thanks for the post - I *should* have mentioned that in the original post. Yes, I have tried all of the various compatibility modes and sadly none of them seem to make a speck of difference...
4466
mwang - thanks for the screenshot. To get it to zoom in and out make sure that you are in "preview" and then select the pulldown option for "Inline thumb attachment":

Yes, sorry, should have clarified that. Just to update everyone, none of my "DSM"s have garnered a response and neither have the e-mails and responses to the blog. Silence. Stony. Absolute. A tomb.

Doublewitt - thanks for the TreeNotesDB link. I haven't yet done so, but I WILL take a look.
4468
Heh, heh, and Konglish is how I communictate with most people these days anyway...  :)
4469
Cool - thanks Lanux. This one seems to be worth watching... Salamander was the second FM I tried under Win98 and I liked it, but was still hooked on File Manager with FMStepUp, so didn't purchase at the time...

Living Room / Re: Update on member KenR health status: Surgery went well
« Last post by Darwin on September 23, 2007, 10:03 PM »
Yes, me too. I'm off to send him an e-mail as well, but anyone who has an opportunity to speak to him directly, please send him my best.

Thanks for the update, Jesse
4471
I'm trying out Altap Salamander 2.5 right now - is there a way to display a folder tree in it? I can't see one... What I mean is a permanent display of the folder structure like Windows Explorer - View - Explorer Bar - Folders option.

Thanks, Lanux! I think it's time I rang Check&Get's developer's bell again, don't you?! Right, off to do just that!

General Software Discussion / Re: Is the Windows start menu dead?
« Last post by Darwin on September 23, 2007, 06:57 PM »
Just to clarify - I was writing about Dennis Nazarenko's Vista Start Menu, rather than the new start menu built into Vista!

General Software Discussion / Re: Is the Windows start menu dead?
« Last post by Darwin on September 23, 2007, 06:29 PM »
As far as I know, Vista Start Menu doesn't index anything. It's search feature is nice and quick (it has a "live" search feature which is very handy) but I'm not running it these days. I'm cycling through it, Dash Command, Direct Access, FARR (now w/the Locate plugin) and very occasionally now, Active Words...

App - I've just noticed your new avatar - when did you change it? Very cool
