Real Player 11 is actually quite good!

I can't believe I'm saying this, I feel as if the space time fabric is gong to collapse on itself as the unspeakable seems to have happened!

Try out the RP 11 beta. I heard about it here - http://cybernetnews....and-read-our-review/. Its no longer the beast it once was, behaves nicely with existing file handlers, and has a killer web video download feature. I no longer need to try the latest firefox extensions to get youtube videos, its now literally a one-click affair.

As a c-span junkied I've always had a very soft spot in my heart for RealPlayer, and i've always liked it.  So this news is even sweeter.

Some sins simply cannot be forgiven, and the company behind Real Player have committed pretty much all of them. Even if it could offer world peace and free beer for everyone, it still wouldn't be allowed anywhere near my PC.

Should I let this touch my immaculate music collection?
Would it mangle my tags, and place ads in the comment tags?

Actually, you may laugh, but Jriver Media center does.
Every file it 'touches' gets an 'edited with Jriver Media center' comment. I think Jriver is pretty evil in itself, almost as much as M$ and Real... even tags that have standards are ignored. Instead of <TAG> you get a <MEDIACENTER:TAG>. Talk about subtlety :)

I confess ... I do use:

  • Windows Media Player 11 (for most things - works pretty good and is easy to find stuff)
  • iTunes (for Audible files, Podcasts and the iTunes files I have bought - few - or received free - quite a lot)
  • RealPlayer 10 (burns RM audio files direct to proper CD Audio disks - which is useful)
  • Audible Manager (hate it but it allows Audible files to sync with my Zen Micro nicely - yes WMP does it too, I just don't like the way it does it)

so there.

Can't fault you Carol! I use WMP 11 and iTunes myself. I'm trying to fall in love with MusicIP Mixer and have given up (more or less) on XMPlay. I love XMPlay's small footprint and sound but it's a bit counterintuitive to use... I mostly transfer mp3s to my external player so don't listen to music through my computer that much anymore.

My RealPlayer 11 (6.0.14.550) PLUS Beta is suffering from hiccups!
so my advice at the moment would be to wait for the final or for ever...

- though it is looking quite nice:

 >:( >:( I hate how all these designers are now going for that stupid idea of placing buttons/menu items in the caption of the windows!!
It makes no sense, doesn't respect the windows standard UI, and now that the screens are getting bigger, they decide they should save some screen space? bah!!
[/rant]

Sorry for that, but i hate that idea, it's highly incompatible with gridmove...  :(

I understand where you come from...
But I actually like that idea. Well, I would, if only it was really meant to make wiser use of screen space (laptop users usually prefer slim captions, etc.). Unfortunately, it looks more like a design caprice. Just look at the width and fonts used of the other UI components.[/off-topic]

I have nothing much to say about RealPlayer as such, except that I often had it installed but never used it....

...  to say about RealPlayer as such, except that I often had it installed but never used it....

From somewhere around year 2000 I was using nothing but RealPlayer 10 Plus - and it served me well. It was only half a year ago when I discovered the bessings of DivX and flash movies that I started using everything else but RealPlayer. With RealPlayer 11 being able to play both DivX and Flash formats, I expect again soon being using RealPlayer only.

I very often aggree with jgpaiva, but not this time. I know nothing about "gridmove", but I truly like the idea not to fill space with nothing...

- strange! It is working fine in my 3 browsers. Of course you already have marked the right boxes, so I won't suggest that this could be the problem, but maybe someone else would like to know where to put the X:

Edit: Also, I recall, you have to close the Internet browser before the end of installing RealPlayer.

I also had no problems with the video download feature in IE/Firefox. I really like how it picks the right name and saves both the file and the url info.

I'm now looking for a way to export and import my video library into another computer while preserving all the metadata.
