General Software Discussion / Re: Is XP really that good?
« Last post by f0dder on December 05, 2008, 10:21 PM »
tslim: registry corruption? in all my years of XP (and before that, win2k) I have never ever experienced that, neither on my own machine nor any I have been supervising. Neither during normal use, nor after BSODs (including some pretty nasty ones during driver development on test machines). Care to elaborate?

As for old games booting faster than new ones, sure - old games didn't have to load a gigabyte of 3D models and texture data :P. New games sure do look prettier... gameplay isn't always better, though.

That pic reminds me of Valde (Our old insane cat that would attack anything if you were within 1 meter of him)
Not sure why your cat's name reminded me of this one, but we used to have a cat named Katze. :)
Probably because "Valde" kan be pronounzed so it sounds pretty Gerrrrman?

Zaine: you should link to our own thread about "How to tell if your cat is plotting to KILL you" :P.

And yeah, the cat might look cute and cuddly, but it could bring down it's feline ferocity just any second now, shredding the foolish hu-man to pieces.

1) iirc GMail supports IMAP, which rocks compared to POP3.
2) see this thread - imho doesn't only apply to ISPs, but also other services... like gmail. Go buy your own domain+hosting, it's cheap.

Well, consider what happens if client crashes/disconnects/whatever and leaves the lock-file in place? That's not a good thing either.

Imho the best strategy, as long as dealing with fairly small files, is to always do a "write-temp", "rename-original-backup", "rename-temp-original" scheme - optionally using transactional NTFS is running on Vista or later. There's still some room for failure (very little when using transactional NTFS though), but in any case the old data isn't trashed, which is the most important goal.

FWIW I would like what I'd consider to be a top-notch SSD but I'm not sure that such a thing exists quite yet.
I don't think I found any computer hardware that appealed to me at this time last year.
-cranioscopical (December 02, 2008, 04:05 PM)
I have my hardware needs pretty much covered, so a top-notch SSD is one of the few things I'd like as well. And yes, they do exist - Intel has some preeeeetty sweet drives out:
http://www.intel.com...flash/nand/index.htm
http://www.anandtech.../showdoc.aspx?i=3403
http://www.techrepor...m/articles.x/15433/1

...and iirc there was an article a week or so ago about another company launching even faster SSDs - can't find it right now though, and might've been paper launch whereas those intel SSDs should be available now. If you sell your soul, anyway.

Why not use Paint.net.  It's free and as good as Paintshop Pro.
How is it's scripting support, though?

I agree that paint.net is a very nice application, and fills most people's needs just fine (I've been trying to tell that to people who pirate Photoshop but don't really use anything beyond basic editing features). But on the other hand, P.N still isn't as fully-featured as PSP or PS :)

Well, you can make file properties say anything you want - it wouldn't take many minutes making a malware.exe where file properties say it has been signed by bill gates himself :]

I actually thought I saw a topic here at DC about this.  I have searched but was unable to find anything.  It also could have been some software that would just create the signature.  I am not sure at this point.   :(
There was a thread about a piece of software that could create a true-type font from your own scanned handwriting - perhaps that's what you're thinking about?

Remember that with GetCaretPos(), "The caret position is always given in the client coordinates of the window that contains the caret." (quoting MSDN)... so you might need to combine with GetForegroundWindow() and ClientToScreen().

Gothic: I was thinking of the "run lots of servers" (and iirc do some timing and other stuff) in order to be able to control both an entry- and exit-node, and thus determining the source of a packet... something like that, it's been quite a while since I read about the 'attack' :)

Can I simply move "Curt" (incl Documents, Music, etcetera) to another partition?
Will Vista automatically understand and remember this?
Good question! - I'm not sure exactly what data Vista stores under that folder (I should have a look at my laptop and see). I'm not sure whether you can simply move the folder either, or whether Vista perhaps has some tool to do the move for you (like you could do with "My Documents" on 2k and xp), but it's definitely possible to move the folder, either with NTFS junctions or (Vista-only) NTFS Symbolic links. That might take a bit of manual work though :)

Have to take a nap now, hopefully some of the other bright heads here have some ideas.

Perhaps it's possible through a combination of desktop.ini , "web view" feature, and some javascript code in the web-view html... but this is a wild guess from my side, and I have no idea where to start looking :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Help needed to alter partitions
« Last post by f0dder on December 02, 2008, 07:34 AM »
Oh, don't you love when terminology is ambiguous? :)

The "C" and "D" drives are partitions - you can have multiple partitions on a physical disk drive, or you can have a single partition per drive, and there's all sorts of other things you can do that I won't comment on right now, because it would just confuse.

RAID is a technology that "does stuff with multiple physical disks", and presents them as a single disk. This can be for performance, data redundancy, or both. The two most widely known modes are MIRROR (2x500gig drives would show up as 1x500gig drive, if one drive dies you have the exact same contents on the other drive) and STRIPE (2x500gig drives show up as 1x1000TB drive, you get around 2x read and write performance, but your files are "striped" across the two drives, so if one drive dies you lose everything).

Anyway, you say you had only to partitions (or "drives") before the crash, and now your primary drive is suddenly split into this three-partition mess? Never seen anything like it :-s. But at least your second partition/drive was left intact?

There are tools for moving/resizing partitions, I used to use PartitionMagic in the past... but I'd never use such a tool without doing backups first, as there's a quite real risk of losing data (google should be full of horror storries).

ANYWAY, I believe that with Vista it's possible to at least extend partitions, if not shrink/move, with the built-in diskmgmt.msc tool (you can press start, type diskmgmt.msc in the run bar, and press enter).

I would suggest that you make a "small" (considering your full harddisk size) partition for only Vista + Programs, and keep all your data files, documents, music etc. etc. etc. on separate partitions. This makes it much easier to do a clean re-install without having to back up stuff and such. Iirc you're a software junkie, so you'd probably want to reserve 64 gigabytes or so for vista+programs - do your own measurement of how much you need :)

...
As for how to proceed now, it depends on what kind of resize/move Vista can do itself. I haven't needed to do this myself for many years (always doing clean repartitioning and shuffling data back and forth physical disks), so I don't really know what partition tools are available now, and whether there's any decent free tools.

OK, what the heck have you been doing? :P

1) did you have a single 1TB partition before, or is it just something you'd like to have?
1a) if you had a 1TB partition, what setup did you use to present the 2x500gig as 1x1tera?
2) what was your partition layout like before the problem?
3) what happened that caused the problem you needed to recover from?

Grrr, what is it with youtube and "this movie is not available in your country"? The people who thought of that need to be shot, asap. (Can't watch the "Mad World" video - is it the Gary Jules cover from Donnie Darko, or the original Tears For Fears?).

Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails's hurt is pretty amazing - you can watch it at YouTube, but please do yourself the favor and go to Mark Romanek's site, he's the director and the video quality there is better.

It´s using file locking and I tested it with 2 friends nonstop over several weeks without any problem. Before updating it reloads if changes have been made before the last save and before a new search.
Just keep in mind that, while it seems to work for now, there are several things that can go wrong when dealing with network shares. It only happens rarely when the file share is on a LAN, but it can still go wrong even there - I'm speaking from experience. The museum had a shared calendar that worked in much the same way, and it would lose data at least a couple of times a month. There were 8+ people using the calendar, so obviously that gave a higher risk of collision than just three people :)

Nothing wrong with your app btw., so I'm not criticizing you - iirc. the problem is something along the lines of client still thinking it's connected to the server (and holding the file lock), whereas the server (for whatever reason) has terminated the client connection and thus released the lock.

Oh, and never do anything depending on network share file locking across a WAN, the risk of disaster is much higher than on a LAN.

Also, I wouldn't depend on TOR making me 100% anonymous, iirc there was some article about clever trickery that can be - sometimes - used to track a TOR connection... didn't sound like it was super easy to pull off, but if you're paranoid enough to use TOR, it's definitely something to keep in mind. IOW: TOR + anonymous wifi hotspot.

How does it handle multi-users over network drive?

Asking because it's one of those things that usually, sometime, end up giving horrible data loss or at least just quirkiness. File locking isn't 100% reliable over network shares :/

Wow, that seems extremely ambitious - I hope they manage to complete it, and that Valve doesn't shut them down. Even if they've done all new models, textures and maps, it's still very based on the original HL1.

Late reply, I *just* got my 300 or so emails (I should check that more often) :P
I sync my Visual Studio project folder through 3 computers - the EXEs that got through were compiled projects that were infected with the rest of the exes.
Even then, how did the infection trigger? If you didn't actually run any of those infected EXEs, nothing should have happened just by sync'ing them.

You might want to consider slipstreaming SP3 into XP before you reinstall. nlite is probably the easiest way to do that. Just a thought - and good luck. :)
I was going to slipstream, but I simply didn't care enough to take the time to do so. I installed from scratch and updated to SP2 in about 45 minutes, and then let automatic updates have at it. I really should look into it though...
Installing a non-SP2 XP is a very very very bad idea if you don't have the box behind NAT... iirc the average time-to-infect unpatched XP through automated internet probes is around 10 minutes, which is faster than most people can apply the service pack.
