Exactly my feelings, Ralf, though I am enduring a spell checker for now... What I hate about it is that it will often "correct" words that it doesn't recognise, but which may be spelled correctly. I had to correct the newsletter because it had changed "stronger" to "stinger". I only noticed after I had posted the newsletter and was reading it! I've been coming to realise that I would be far better off running the spell checker only during those times when correct spelling is of utmost important (like writing my PhD up) because overall I think my spelling has suffered due to the replacement of words that Spell Catcher doesn't recognise with the closest matching words in its database... I realise that I just have to train it more, but...

Living Room / Re: How much RAM do you have on your PC?

I'll have to revisit the Tom's Hardware page (I've visited in the past)... My system was *supposed* to be taxed at 1 gig but is loving 2! This could very well have something to do with the placebo effect - I open up a bunch of processes and then ctrl-shift-esc to my Task Manager and revel in the fact that I still have 1.4GB of RAM free... Everything just *feels* more stable, more responsive and MORE! When I upgraded this laptop from 512MB to 1GB RAM the diference was not nearly so profound (I was actually a bit disappointed).

Can't answer your question, Nosh, but I can report that for me the big pay-off is in multi-tasking (now if I could somehow manage to shoe-horn a dual-core processor in I'd REALLY be set...) - opening all components of Office 2003 Professional (with their respective addins and macros running), Maxthon 2, Corel PaintShop Pro X2 plus Windows Media Player 11, everything runs smoothly and the computer is zippy. On a gig of RAM this was not the case... Don't know if this will help you or not.

General Review Discussion / Re: UltraEdit Review and Giveaway ($50 value)

No, the lifetime licence is available, but it looks like you can only get it as an upgrade (I'm really not sure though). I bought a standard licence and then switched to the lifetime one after I realised that a couple of upgrades would cost more than the lifetime licence!

Hmm... I've never looked at any speed reading proggies - don't really understand what they do. Thus, I'll have to take a look at SpeedReader and get back to you!

Thanks for this, Ryan. I already have a lifetime licence so will let others more needy than myself post on your thread. I love ultraedit and use it primarily as a more powerful text editor (ie don't code with it or write html).

Yippee! I bought two cheap DDR333 sticks - 1 GB each - and installed them into my notebook's motherboard (I WAS paying attention, Nighted!) and it's been recognised (Darwin jumps up and down for joy and generally makes an ass out of himself... Business as usual). As I noted in this post earlier in this thread, my notebook was *supposed* to be maxed out at a gig. I'm so happy I could... Ah, there simply aren't (polite) words. It feels like a brand new notebook!

PS was emboldened to try this because my wife's notebook takes DDR333 RAM and I would have lost nothing if it didn't work in mine (which supports RAM up to 266MHz...).

Well, for me, I find autocomplete to be annoying beyond belief and boilerplate text about half a step behind it in the "annoyance factor". The spell checker that I use (SpellCatcher Plus) offers this functionality, but I have it turned off and still get annoyed by it...

You don't need to go to the Show menu in Total Commander to use the keyboard shortcuts Federov mentions, Kalos. Just thought I'd throw that into the mix...

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: fixing tray icons
« Last post by Darwin on October 15, 2007, 11:59 PM »
Heh, heh - keeps coming back to PS Tray Factory doesn't it?! I wonder though if something simpler than PS Tray Factory couldn't be coded, perhaps in AHK? I love PS Tray Factory, but Target is looking for something with a lot less bells and whistles (I think).

Why not post this as a coding snack? Maybe Skrommel can work his magic in AHK and produce something that will do what you need? Of course, I'm just an ideas man... No idea if this is possible in AHK or not...

I went through the same aggravation for about two year before I gave up and bought PS Tray Factory. Problem solved! Of course it's shareware... I took advantage of a DC discount and have been very, very happy ever since, despite having had to be convinced to join the party! See Josh's mini-review here.

Hmm...
At tinjaw's urging, I'm creating this poll to try to get a sense of what File Management solution(s) DCer's are using. So, cast a vote and let the numbers tell their tale!

Links?  Or are they in the other thread?

I'm not following you on this one, wraith. Are you requesting links to the various File Managers posted here?

Yes, that's what I was requesting.  Sorry it took so long to reply; for some reason I wasn't notified of updates on this thread.

No worries, wraith. Here are links to the FM's mentioned in the poll (anyone know if I can hyperlink the poll questions? Only one way to find out...):

Directory Opus
Total Commander
XYPlorer
xplorer2
Altap/Servant Salamander
Frigate
Speed Commander
AB Commander

Yeah, I assumed it would be (obviously didn't download it) but as mentioned earlier it was my attempt to get clarification as to why I was running 3.0.9 when the latest version was supposed to be 3.0.8 that led me to realise that the lights were on at GemX but no one was home... and look where that got us!

Ralf - Archivarius is $19.95 with academic licencing so if you qualify that's one route you can take for a discount. I'm not aware of any promotions or anything other than that.

1. Newsletter Editorial

Hello, Donationcoders! Darwin here once again, reporting live from the wilds of British Columbia. It's an exciting time at Donationcoder because this month we're featuring a Cody drawing contest.  Get out your crayons (or any other media of choice) and start drawing! Nick (aka nudone) announced the contest moments ago, so head to the Draw Cody competition - win incredible prizes! thread to find out what you need to do to win.  Children's submissions are encouraged!

And Josh created a great new master list of all the companies/programs from whom we have received discounts, and a list of companies we have requested discounts from but not heard back from.  It should be easier now for everyone to suggest new companies we should contact.

It's been a busy couple of weeks with a number of very active new threads. Read on to find out what Donationcoder members have been discussing.

2. We want your help and participation!

First, though, a big welcome to the new members who have joined over since the last newsletter went out. If you are one of those new members, we'd love to see more of you around Donationcoder. Every Donationcoder member is encouraged to participate in the various boards on the DC forum, so if you've never posted before, or if it's been a while since your last post, please drop by and leave a comment or two. You can even comment on this newsletter! If that doesn't strike your fancy, here are a few threads that we'd love to have your participation in:

3. Official DonationCoder.com News

What's new at DonationCoder.com?

4. General Software Discussion

Our tour of the forum starts with this excellent suggestion from contributing member tinjaw: Tell Them You "Learned About It On DonationCoder.com" . Following tinjaw's advice will have a number of positive effects for the donationcoder community, not least of which is raising our profile with software developers and other online service provides. First, it encourages developers to offer discounts to our members (always a good thing!) and second, and perhaps less obviously, it gives us a stronger voice. Over time this could give us real power as a block of dedicated software users in a number of ways - advocating end-user's rights, helping direct software development, and so on. Finally, just to highlight one final posting, if you're a FireFox user be sure to check out tinjaw's post about TweakGuides.com - Firefox Tweak Guide. Very comprehensive and very interesting. Nice find, tinjaw!

5. Living Room

We start with this interesting discussion of how do you represent 'time' in your head? . Not having ever given this much thought, I read the thread with interest. I was sad to finish it with the realization that I simply do not represent time in my head. Rather worrying... Anyway, lots of interesting discussions to take part in here. You can discuss everything from mouser's facial hair in the DC Unofficial Meeting #5 Took Place - Veign and Mouser meet thread or debate the ramifications of institutional access to private information in the UK Government wants your crypto keys... by law. thread. See below for more conversation topics.

6. Fun and Gaming

Everyone needs a break from work now and then..

7. Coding Snacks

Want a small application? Can't find it? Post a request on the Coding Snacks board and some kind hearted soul might just whip something up for you. Be sure to read BrotherS' important Read This First note before posting.

8. Developer's Corner

The developer's corner is an interesting place, even if you're not a developer. Witness the thread that John2k started on a Strange Customer that he was dealing with. There are a range of comments and suggestions from coders and non-coders alike. There's also the thread on Microsoft providing .NET Framework source code that raises some interesting issues and perspectives.

9. Member Site Spotlight

In this issue of the newsletter we're highlighting a DC member blog: Jonathan Plutchok's Tool Bar & Grill.

Jonathan explores "handy little utilities that have won [his] heart". He focuses on "useful free and cheap software tools and Web sites that can save you time, boost your productivity, improve your computing environment, do some vital task you otherwise couldn't easily do — or are just too much fun to ignore." It's a lot of fun, so check it out.

Remember, if you run a website that you think should be featured in the member spotlight, do let us know!

10. Site of the month

Each month we like to highlight a site that offers excellent advice, service, and/or software. This month we're highlighting a site that provides a great area for discussion of security related applications and issues: Wilders Security Forums.

If you are at all concerned about the security of your data and computer, and in this day and age this should be everyone, head over to Wilders Security Forums to find out what threats are out there, how people are responding to those threats, and what solutions people are using to secure themselves.  There are actually quite a few subsections dedicated to specific programs, that are better resources for help and information than the official program websites.

Hmmm... interesting. The refund was applied to my cc a week ago. TODAY I get a response (actually, SWREG) got a response from GemX saying: "The customer has already downloaded the full version, therefore delivery has already been completed." Still not a word to me - no response to my e-mails, DSM's, nothing... (SWREG forwarded their message to me). Idiot. This is like  the manufacturer of a car telling the dealer that as I've already taken delivery of it, any defect in design, such as that the model has a nasty habit of exploding when rear-ended, is irrelevant. SUPPORT YOUR PRODUCT, ASSHOLE! Sorry, I should just move on, given that I've gotten my refund already, but this really puts me over the edge. What about a note to me expressing regret that I've stopped using their products? I'm absolutely stunned.

Well, you can do that via the USB drive letter manager, but it wouldn't follow you from computer to computer - only work on the computer it is installed and configured on...
