Hey, something else I found out about Microsoft SkyDrive: You get 5 GB of storage free, and if you already had a SkyDrive account set up you can claim another 20 free GB as a "legacy user", meaning that you have used SkyDrive for "a long time", whatever the hell that means. Anyway I went and clicked the button to upgrade and now I have 25 GB free storage there.   :)

« Last post by J-Mac on April 29, 2012, 01:04 PM »
OK, instead of a forum Todoist now has a support page where all the support requests are shown like a forum. Kinda weird, but anyway I posted about the same thing as my initial post in this thread and received a few others commenting on the same issue. Todoist posted that they decided to go with a "daily report" to all subscribers and if anyone doesn’t want to see the report then to cancel their registration there.

So I did! And apparently a lot of others who, like me, used the tool at one time but stopped long ago. I guess they wanted to wake ME up. Bye bye Todoist.   :)

Just weird to suddenly get that after all this time. Not like my email address changed or anything. At first I didn't even remember what the heck Todoist was!

Maybe someone just found their email list?

Here's an email I received today from Todoist, an online To-Do list I used once upon a time. Notice when these tasks were due? This is the first contact from them in over five years! What the hell were they thinking?

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: ACDSEE products discount until March 21st
« Last post by J-Mac on April 27, 2012, 11:18 AM »
Just to let everyone know, ACDSee is having another sale until May 1, 2012. Calling it their "Better Photos Event".

Deep discounts on all their products plus Nuance PDF Converter, both standard and Pro versions. ACDSee 14 is $29.99, ACDSee Pro 5 is now $59.99, and so on down the line.

ACDSee runs a lot of sales, most of them pretty ho-hum, but this one has really low prices. Worth a look!

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: IDimager Pro 50% off
« Last post by J-Mac on April 27, 2012, 11:07 AM »
This one is expensive, and also very detailed and advanced. If you're just looking to keep your digital photo files organized, even at a fairly detailed level, then ACDSee or Zoner will do fine for you.

I purchased IDImager Pro 2 years ago - $139!! (Though I did get a "competitive upgrade discount of $20). Never could get it working right on my PC. It was extremely slow while it tried desperately to create a catalog of my images, and certain views could not be rendered at all. It would lock up my machine if I went into certain views. Wasn’t a bum PC, or that old. I had a Falcon NW Mach V from 2006 and it was pretty powerful. So I don’t think it was the PC that couldn't run the program. More likely that IDImager didn't get along well with either the Athlon processor or - more likely yet - the Nvidia GeForce 8000 GT graphics card. (That Nvidia card caused a lot of issues with several programs; never did get drivers that were decent for that card).

But my problems running the program aside, I discovered that I really do not need that powerful of a program to catalog and categorize/organize my photos! It was way over what I really needed! But ACDSee didn't have a program working well on Windows 7 at that time - I had their latest at the time - ACDSee Photo Manager 2009 AND ACDSee Pro Photo 1 - and believe it or not ACD Systems never accounted for Libraries in Windows 7! So when it looked for hard-coded file locations and ran into the libraries it froze. They didn't fix that until their next versions. In the meantime I purchased Zoner Studio and while that was usable it lacked some of my favorite features from ACDSee, so I kept looking for a better mousetrap to organize my ~20,000 photos. I broke down and bought IDImager Pro, thinking I would really, really organize the heck out of these photos! Turned out to be double-trouble for me. Whereas ACDSee catalogs my entire library of images in a very short time, IDImager does it in such a different, convoluted manner that it takes several days to catalog! I inquired about this on their forum and all there felt that was perfectly reasonable.

So now I am back to ACDSee Pro. Swore I'd never buy from them again after they let me upgrade to a product that wasn’t working on the latest Windows OS, but after trying all else I ended up back with them. As a company they pretty much suck at times, but their photo organization software is both reasonably priced and works just the way I need for it to.

OK, all that jazz just to basically say:  Determine exactly what you really want to do with your photo collection before buying DAM software - Digital Asset Management - which is what IDImager actually is. It isn't what most amateur/hobbyist photographers need.

Sorry for the long post...  :-[

I remember in a mobile/handheld computing forum where I was a moderator (Aximsite) the owner set up a separate subforum for politics and religion topics and made it so you had to request access and receive a separate password to enter! I felt it a bit extreme - though in all honesty I never did request access to the darned thing and never received it either, moderator or not!

Thank you.

Living Room / Re: List your (wireless) router and experiences
« Last post by J-Mac on April 20, 2012, 11:06 AM »
Thanks all for the input!

It sounds like your needs are modest so I'd say most any model should suffice; just check first to see if there are any vulnerabilities reported (that goes for replacement software too, google "dd-wrt i know where you live" for example).  I use a separate gigabit switch for everything wired, but given radio speeds and internet link speeds I don't worry about getting gigabit on the router.  (That might come into play if I had more internal-to-internal wireless N traffic instead of internal-to-internet.)
-x16wda

Well, when streaming to Roku Digital Players wirelessly, doesn’t the speed increase over my current router affect that? I thought it did, but not sure...

The RT-N16 has performed flawlessly, (under Tomato-USB anyway, didn't use the original firmware for more than a day or two), since I got it about a year or so ago.
-4wd

I ordered the RT-N16 from Amazon but it does mention it "...support USB-Hard Drive and Printer and Open source DDWRT", so it most likely has DDWRT as its firmware. I guess I'll have to look hard at that and Tomato. Also, I am looking at getting an Asus 8-Port Gigabit "Green" switch for the extra wired connections I am planning. About $50. Any suggestions on which cable to use, Cat5e or Cat6?

It upsets me some to hear of all the router resets/reboots required; my last few routers rarely ever needed that. I am using an APC UPS, though it is pretty old now and I am looking at replacing it with a newer one. Sounds like it might be doing the job although I guess that could just be the power company being better than I realized too. The UPS is fantastic! On the few occasions my power has gone out over the last few years the computer, monitor, cable modem, router, and speakers have stayed on till I shut them down manually. Not sure how much time the UPS would have held up for but I know I went as long as 18 to 20 minutes once. Which should be plenty if you are using the UPS as designed. I've seen comments on reviews where people complained that they expected to get a couple hours of battery time!! Like students who thought they could finish a paper when the power died! They are really just meant to give you time to save your work and then safely shut everything down.

Thanks again for the comments!

I will never buy D-Link again.

+1 After my experience with one of their NAS models.

FWIW, I currently run a ASUS RT-N16 loaded with Tomato-USB firmware.  4 Gigabit ports, 2 USB ports, WiFi N.

No WiFi problems connecting to 802.11b/g laptop and phone, and no problems connecting to a couple of generic 802.11n adapters, (one on a WD TV Live) - no problems with the router at all.

They also have the RT-N56U which is dual band.

4wd: So how are you liking your Asus RTN16? I'm looking to upgrade from my old but very reliable Linksys WRT54GL. I'm hoping to gain a littler speed and from what I read the RTN16 gets roughly 3X over the Linksys. Pricing is fantastic so I might as well get one now.

Also, I'm thinking about running cable for a few connections where I use wireless currently. This will result in needing more than four wired connections. Has anyone done this and if so is it better to use a switch? Or another router, connected inline with the first.

Networking help is surprisingly thin on the net; I thought I would find some good answers and there are some, but sadly none of it seems to be at the same place! I end up following a chain of links all over. Created a folder in Linkman just for the networking help sites I visited and it quickly grew to >20... and I still don’t have the info I was seeking! Maddening.

Thanks!

According to the "Zombie Survival Guide", forget about firearms in the fight against the undead and instead go for edged weapons. Reason: The supply of firearms will eventually diminish and dry up while knives, swords, axes, etc. will be effective much longer due to not needing any ammunition. Plus people trained strictly in firearms may not be prepared when they must use blades.

Amazing, the amount of thought people actually put into surviving in the time of zombies!

Well, before this thread goes away, I'd just like to add my condolences, sorrow, and prayer in remembrance of the six million who were killed in the Holocaust. I didn't realize that there was such a period of remembrance every year. But I do now. It was a terrible time that thankfully ended when it did.

Thing is: it looks to me like many iPad apps have Dropbox support built into them.

Yeah, but there seems to be a goodly number that can interface with GDocs also. At least some that I have. I still have my Dropbox account but I also installed Insync to check it out. First issue I see is that a lot of my GDocs are files I uploaded from my PC, so now I have those files in their original locations and also in the Insync folder. Doubled up on those files.

I had set up a SkyDrive account a while back but didn't really use it. However now that I have both an iPad 2 and an Android "dumbass" phone, I wanted to view/add/edit my OneNote 2010 notebooks on them. I set them up to sync to SkyDrive and they are now auto-synced to all devices. Pretty coll and seems to work OK... for now!

BTW, has anyone tried Insync yet? No, no - not 'NSync or Justin Timberlake and all that! Insync is a service whose UI looks a lot like Dropbox and syncs to your GDocs. The buzz they're pushing hard is how much less expensive Google's data storage is than Dropbox. (E.g., $100 buys you only 50 GB with Dropbox, but 400 GB with Google Cloud storage.) Sounds very interesting! Of course the features available with GDocs and Dropbox are different but that price break sure is tempting. I just renewed with Dropbox in January so I'm going to have my 50 GB account there for another year anyway, but I think I might give Insync a try. If it works for me then bye-bye Dropbox.   :)

Before jumping all over the extension author about silent updates... make sure you know exactly how firerfox itself is configured to update any/all extensions.  If FF is set to have extensions auto-update as the default, then *you* have to tell it which extensions you want to be notified of updates before they are install.  It's not really his fault if FF did it on your behalf.  Personally, I'm glad he backed out the change - whether it was because of the backlash, or because of hijacking.   And I have now reverted (again) to manual updates only, for all extensions. (default = no updates, and all extensions reset to default update policy).

perlguy,

I was looking at different Firefox extensions and checking DC here for any info and I just noticed your post. FYI, I always have FF set to update manually, but Download Statusbar updated automatically anyway back in October 2011, when I first started this thread. I don’t know how that could happen but that was a big part of why everyone was so upset about that update - and was also the primary reason that the Mozilla Add-ons group removed the extension from the Add-ons site, at least until the author reverted back to the previous features and removed the adware functionality.

Thanks!

The difference between Alex Jones and pretty much any other site that reports on the same material, is that he'll say what he thinks or give some analysis, or simply call something for what it is, or point out the obvious implications that people don't want to hear.

The entire "conspiracy theory" stuff is just a tool to shut down debate on a topic. More often than not what people call "conspiracy theories" are really just plain old pieces of history that makes people uncomfortable. e.g. The US regularly uses false flag attacks, just like it did with the Gulf of Tonkin incident that it used to drag the American people into war in Viet Nam. Sure - lots of people will call it a "conspiracy theory". It's just history. There's nothing controversial in saying that the US government lies to its people on a regular basis in order to drag the country into wars. History proves it.

So, yeah... If knowing a bit of history makes someone a "conspiracy theorist", I guess Alex Jones is. I guess I am as well.

But isn't it strange that a lot of these inconvenient facts never seem to make it into most history books... Hmmm... ;)

Wow! so he's a true historian? Yes, the US government has dragged the American people into war, but... 9/11 was a hoax perpetrated by the US government? And the US government blew up the Oklahoma City Federal Building? And Angelina Jolie is a war criminal? Oh boy! Tri-Lateral Commission stuff all over again? US will be a lot of FEMA-run concentration camps?  And all this crap belongs in our history books? Really?

Yep! Sounds like a real "historian" to me! The more I read on that site the funnier it gets. A sad kind of funny, I guess.

Methinks I'll bow out of this conversation before I bust a gut laughing!   ;D

OK, kidding aside, I couldn't find much about what the professor wrote in her paper but if anyone is paraphrasing her accurately then I agree that she seems a bit wacky. At the same time, that whole web site featuring Alex Jones appears to be more wacky yet. Look up "wild-eyed conspiracy theorist wacko" and I bet it links directly to that web site!!

Hmm... Arizona also passed that controversial law that allows police to detain and question anyone they think "looks" like an illegal alien.

So what if I report some illegal alien-looking person I don't like and refer to him/her as a "f**king illegal alien"? Do we both get arrested?   ;)  ;D

Yep. New dll is there. Old dll was 308 kb; new one is 446 kb. I have the 446 kb dll in there. I didn't even try it with the old one... I read the other thread and automatically replaced the old dll with the new one without trying to run it with the old dll. Maybe I should have left the old one there and at least tried it.

Ack! I have been stopping in here and there for a couple weeks (been busy otherwise) and didn't even know about a fundraiser this year! It wasn’t mentioned in a newsletter, was it?

As always, I have absolutely no problem with a fundraiser for DC. (Did I really just say that?!) Money just burns holes in my pockets anyway... (Did I say that, too? Or is this just a dream?!    :-\ )

OK, kidding. I'd probably just spend my pocket money on more software - that I really, really, really don’t need - anyway.   ;)   8)   :)

So I clicked the button to view the report and this is what came up:

I should mention that before running the program I swapped out the dll with the one mouser provided here in the next post down. BTW, I didn't bother sending the report to the Mobysaurus email address shown as I don’t believe that site exists anymore.

Any ideas as to what went wrong mouser?

cmpm,

I won't tell you to "get over it". Most of us have probably had our own issues and I don’t think that we ever really "get over" anything; we learn to keep them as a part of us, because everything we go through does become us in a manner of speaking. We find a place to keep these things and we go forward, as there is no other way to go. We don’t get over, but we do learn and we move on. I do that and I am sure that all here have also, in some way.

Hang in there!

Let's face it: If the topics are more volatile, then so will the opinions/posts go.

And also as the stakes go up. Because let's face it, most of these 'volatile' topics are of considerably much more importance that locking horns over the relative merits of two competing operating systems.

Despite some of the contention (and occasional acrimony) over these topics, I personally consider them some of the most important discussions ever conducted here. Because these are issues that go right to the root of what we consider are our personal freedoms and responsibilities.

Oh, I agree completely, 40hz!

I wasn't complaining about these types of topics; I was just positing that the increase (at least as I perceive) in them may be one reason that many posts have become a bit more angry-sounding. Of course that doesn't address the veering off-topic of some threads, but it might I think it does contribute to the general "heat" of a lot of posts here in the "Living Room" as of late.   :)

I don’t really think the economy is affecting the posts. To be honest I think I am seeing a lot more contentious topics started, and they naturally tend to draw out our most divided opinions.

Seriously, I can't remember so many threads here about privacy rights, including Google's, Facebook's, and other sites' privacy policy changes, the whole Occupy Wall Street movement, software and media piracy and MAFIAA, Wikileaks, all the ebook woes, fraud of various types, Lulsec/Anonymous...  Really, when has there been more of these kinds of topics before the last year and a half to two years? These threads are almost guaranteed to bring out the feistiest in DC'ers! It used to be more about Linux v. Windows v. MacOS, home theater recommendations, etc.

Let's face it: If the topics are more volatile, then so will the opinions/posts go.

Thanks!
