General Software Discussion / Re: How do I control font size in PDF?
« Last post by tomos on November 15, 2013, 02:40 PM »
My second question: when I create a document with say a font size of 18 (at least that is what the size I prefer while I am in MS Word), but if I then save the document as PDF, I always end up generating a PDF with much smaller font size, at least that is what I can immediately see when I open up the PDF under 100% size (I mean no zooming in or out)

It's difficult to compare how a file looks in different programmes/formats. The only *real* test of this, is to print out each file - if Word is any good at making PDFs, they should be exactly the same. If not, try a dfferent method of PDF creation.

^ pretty much agree there.

So where you're using Google, it's because, in one way or another, you believe they've got a superior product.

I think that would be generally true of the type of people who come here.
I dont use their search much any more myself, I find others superior.
I've been bribed to the tune of 15GB to use their email and am happy enough to allow that. That *used* to be a superior offer at any rate :-)

As for YouTube:
the problem for both google and the people who use YouTube, is this sudden deterioration - i.e. it's no longer superior. I dont know was it ever superior - is it not a bit like FB in that: everyone goes there simply because everyone goes there (?)
(I dont actually know the history of YT.)

I dont use Word myself, but would have thought that almost any PDF converter/printer would do the job. (The type where you print the file to PDF - the pdf file is then created.)

I use PDFCreator myself - it's got lots of options, but there are a few default choices that would cover almost all eventualities, e.g. for web; printshop (publication); etc. AFAIK all of these options embed the font (by default, only the characters used). A word of warning - it always tries to install unwanted toolbars etc.

I dont quite understand the second question - the size of the font in the display is going to depend on the font size used in your word processor. If it's being displayed @ 100%, I guess the theory is that this would be the size when printed. In my experience this is never quite the case - it possibly depends on the PDF reader and monitor resolution etc etc

^ should have known that was not about consumer drives...

______________________________

@ Mouser- IIRC Backblaze uses pretty much nothing but consumer grade hardware in their storage PODs and simply maintains a lot of redundancy and has excess capacity to offset the increased likelihood of hardware failures. More risk management at work.

With the harddrive shortage Backblaze just started using everything and anything.
The last time they recommended drives was in February this year - at that stage they were using enterprise I think.
Hang on...

http://blog.backblaz...ons-storage-pod-3-0/
Here is a list of the drives we have tested and currently use:

    4 TB drives

Hitachi – HDS5C4040ALE630 (Just starting to use these, but they look good.)

    3 TB drives

    Hitachi- HDS5C3030ALA630 (low power)
    Hitachi – HDS723030ALA640 (high power)
Western Digital – WDC WD30EFRX‑68AX9N0 (RED)
Seagate – ST3000DM001‑9YN166 (slightly higher failure rate)
__________

as for now - from their blogpost (via link in OP)

Types Of Hard Drives In The Analysis

Backblaze has standardized on “consumer-grade” hard drives. While hard drive companies say these drives are not designed to work in RAID arrays or the 24×7 workload of a data center environment, Backblaze uses software redundancy to protect data. In a future blog post we will delve into the statistics comparing “consumer” and “enterprise” hard drives.

Where are you finding 5300rpm SATA drives?

normal SATA drives? Drives with the "Green" description are usually 5300rpm
I have a couple here from Samsung ("EcoGreen") and one from Seagate ("Barracuda Green").

e.g. (no date on this review - hate that...)

This guy makes a pretty valid rant about the Google+ - Youtube clusterfuck.

wow, I didnt realise that things are *that* bad.
I didnt understand why weird comments were top of the list - if you go to that video on YT, someone did a test where they replied 500 times to a post complaining about the new sorting system. Oh, cant see it any more - the video has gone viral folks. Including swastikas and god knows what else in the comments.

Added an always saved text area

I'm curious (and not a coder, so dont understand much there anyway).
Wondering if the "always saved text area" is a separate app that you have integrated, or is it part of all that code?

I am wondering if the song could have been Irish: Gaudete by Steeleye Span from 1973, here from 2008 but almost a copy of their original version:

another one I enjoyed Curt  - but definitely not Irish -
Latin lyrics, with a melody of unknown (possibly Skandinavian) origin -

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you delete accounts you did not sign up for?
« Last post by tomos on November 10, 2013, 07:06 AM »
I've had emails from Spotify, Microsoft, Skype, Steam, and some dating site in the last few months that were the result of some f***tard signing up to those services and using a gmail address the same as one of mine but missing a period within it - eg. fred.nurk(a)gmail.com and the emails are for frednurk(a)gmail.com - all because GMail doesn't count an address with a period as different from one without.

I'm confused there - are you blaming gmail as well?
If they dont "count an address with a period as different from one without", surely they wouldnt allow the variations to be created as separate addresses in the first place?

I've noticed LP acting slower lately also but wasn’t certain if it was the new version or the change to the iterations setting.

Well, I guess it's only logical for it to be slower and it's also using more cpu cycles during encryption since its number of rounds is much bigger now.

I only got notification of an update (version 3) today per email - is that the new version you're talking about?

« Last post by tomos on November 09, 2013, 10:59 AM »
^
maybe barney knows what you're on about there Ren, but I sure dont :D :P
No worries...

@barney, nothing wrong with looking for loopholes, but I get the impression you're looking for loopholes *because* you are against bitcoin (or the concept) for some reason? It is true what you say "Anything online is vulnerable to a sufficiently skilled person".
I only recently started using online banking, and I'm not particularly impressed with the bank's online security. It's up to me now, whether I continue with it. I'll probably let it drift, but if I ever got caught out (there is a Visa debit card associated with the account) I could really be kicking myself. I've heard that if a debit card get's ripped off, you have to pay it yourself, but I dont know -again, it's up to me to research that - but you know the way: it's on my list... This is making me rethink the whole thing lol.

So yeah, if you want to buy Bitcoin, you'd surely want to research first. And make an informed decision. And as you say, if you think it's not safe, dont buy in. I guess due to Bitcoins nature - if they can steal it, IIUC, it's gone - due to that, one would like to be extra sure about it. Online banking might not be quite so unsafe (?), but FWIW, mine aint inspiring me ;-)

I think the wiki option would be a great idea

I've suggested it myself too :D in particular to try and help keep the software free for business use up-to-date. Cant remember any response, but I didn't followup on it either.

From Zatiac
"Thanks for the response but I got it solved, I reset internet explorer and uninstalled java....that got all traces of the dropper off my laptop :D  I suspect the dropper is how the fbi moneypacks ransom got on my laptop as well. "

that was something similar to what I cleaned of a laptop this summer - but that was with help of the german language www.trojaner-board.de (thread link).
They got me to scan with a whole bunch of apps:

1) AV (Avira was on the machine)
2) Malwarebytes
3) Oldtimer (think a German lang. only app - comparable to "Hijackthis") - which was also later used to erase some files when rebooting
4) Malwarebytes AntiRootkit
5) AdwCleaner
6) Emsisoft Anti-Malware
7) a "Windows repair tool" they had creasted themselves
8) ESET Online Scanner

Scans 1, 2, and 3 found files related to the trojan.

The Oldtimer scan found a *.js file and a *.pad file in Program Data

Other files were found in:
Users\[USER NAME]\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\12\
Users\[USER NAME]\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\56\
(I presume the 6.0 above was the Java version number)
Users\[USER NAME]\AppData\Local\Temp\
Users\[USER NAME]\
and a shortcut in the Startup Menu:

A couple of things that annoy me about it are:
1) The window is maximised - and that's it.  Other than minimise to the Taskbar I can't resize it.
2) No drag and drop of images onto it to load up a new one.  Having to use a menu or file requesters gets very annoying, very fast.

He's been very focused on getting really good noise reduction and other capabilities. He's a bit of a perfectionist which can be a pro in terms of quality, but a bit of a con if you're waiting for other improvements. Hopefully for the next version he'll look at those interface things.
