On my work computer, whenever I lock the computer and unlock to go back, the USB flash drive stops working.  Why?  how do I fix this?  It's like the drive gets automatically ejected when the computer gets locked.  The weird thing is, I have USB Safely Remove installed and the program can still see that the drive is plugged in, but it can't be used.  But it doesn't say the drive has been stopped or anything.  I don't get it, please help.  Thank you.

I have one of those!  They are really nifty and cool.
Sounds like your usb jack is REALLy tight.  I've never run into that tight of a situation.  The tightest was on my mom's laptop (dell) where I had to make sure my fingers were completely dry before tugging the drive out.  But that was the only one.

Also, about the tight fit of the pico-c...I have had no problems with it and I've plugged it into over 10 computers by now.  yes, some were pretty tight.  but nothing happened.  You have to understand that some people just are obsessed with certain things and just harp on them forever when it's really not that big a deal.  So what if it's tight?  Big deal.  Nothing gets damaged so whatever.

It comes with a little chain for putting on your keyring. I broke the chain multiple times while removing it from USB ports. Further, I now have an intermittent USB port on my laptop which I blame on damage caused by the PICO-C bending the "tongue" inside the USB socket. I don't think this was a small problem, though it may be a rare problem. Other than that I loved the thing. However, I've moved on; I bought a mini-attaché and it's doing the job for now.

Sorry Eric, I didn't mean to criticize you.  I was trying to keep all the pros and cons of the drive in context, and I didn't want people to be scared of the product because of that one issue.  You know how it is with these online reviews, sometimes one particular feature gets talked about a lot, and people lose sight of the overall product.  I've done the same...I totally get obsessed with certain little things here and there.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear about your experience, but I would also agree that it is rare.  I didn't like the idea of yanking that chain to remove the drive also, especially since the fit is tight.  So I make sure to grab the drive itself when i remove it, just to be safe.  It's similar to what my dad used to get on my case about when I was a kid: he'd tell me to not yank cords out of the electrical socket, and always make sure to grab it by the head.

General Software Discussion / Re: Someone MUST make a new PowerMarks program.

Well, people, I've been using the latest beta version of Linkman, and it now has custom toolbar buttons for Firefox that can be placed anywhere you want to.  Also, they have their own option to open links in the existing tab (instead of always opening in a new tab or window).  I have to say that Linkman has now successfully replaced Powermarks in every feature that i can think of.  That means there is nothing Powermarks could do that Linkman can't do now.  In fact, Linkman can do much more.  So there it is.  Linkman is the replacement, you don't have to look any further.  Thanks Outertech, for taking this on and implementing these features.

By the way, below are the screenshots of where I have placed the Linkman buttons.  I place them right next to the Firefox address bar because when I don't want to type in the address or use the firefox smart location features, I only have to move right next door to click open the Linkman window.  before, the buttons were all the way in the bottom corner of the window.  I never really wanted to go all the way down there to click, so I would just use Firefox's location bar, which I don't like.  See the screenshot below:

It's simple enough to do yourself - everything I launch from Linkman opens in a new tab. Install the TabMix Plus extension and configure tab openings for all possible launches from links, other applications, etc.

Jim
Thanks, I had no idea about that, and I've been using Tab Mix Plus for a long time!

Thanks Outertech, I appreciate the continued development of Linkman.  Regarding the opening in tabs issues, why is it that Roboform can do it, but Linkman cannot?  I'm not trying to be an ass about it, I'm just wondering why other programs can do it. Yes, you are correct, even PM stopped being able to do it in later versions of Firefox, but then again, development stopped on PM long before that.

This is a great thread.  I'm going to do the same thing.  I want to build a NAS or server box that I can put at my sister's house as an off-site backup for all my stuff.  Because even though i backup with multiple redundancy, it's all in one location, and in the rare case of theft or something, someone can easily take all my computer equipment and I'd be devastated.

So, great thread!  40hz, once again...always a few steps ahead of me!!

Finally tried PowerMarks and have to admit that first impression is very good. I've tried a few bookmark managers before, but as you've already said there's something so simple yet powerful about PowerMarks. It just works... By far the best initial impression I've had from any of the bookmark managers I've tried.
And since I'm using Opera and google chrome, PowerMarks works just fine
Yes, it's true.  Powermarks is one of the best little programs I've ever come across.  I'm using Linkman right now, but there are two small features that are still lacking:
--being able to place the toolbar buttons on the upper toolbar of Firefox.  You use to do this with Powermarks.  I stuck the buttons right next to the address bar.  This was perfect for me because whenever I didn't want to type in an address, I'd go right next to it and click the button.  With Linkman, I have to go all the way to the bottom left window edge to get the buttons.  If I could suggest something to Linkman, it's the ability to place the buttons anywhere in the firefox windows according to the user.

--Opening the bookmark in the existing tab of Firefox.  This was good because I could repeatedly use Powermarks without opening a new tab everytime I used it, and cluttering up my bar.  Powermarks had an option to open in the same tab or a new tab.  I really wish Linkman would add this also.  The developer said this was technically impossible (he explained some technical things I don't really get), but I know for a fact that it is possible because the google toolbar can do it, Roboform can do it, and I've seen other toolbars able to do it.

These seem like little things, but because of these two items, I use Linkman less than half as much as I used Powermarks.  It's an example of "the devil's in the details" because in most ways, Linkman does everything PM could do plus more.

b)make shortcuts for my portable programs

well that's where it's handled more easily -- as has been said earlier, you dont need to make shortcuts for your portable items -- i have a folder of non-installer-applications on my computer, and i just add that directory to farr search and give it a nice bonus score, and farr searches that folder happily.
What score do you give? maybe I'll just copy it.
4162
i think i understand what you are saying -- you have shortcuts in your start menu -- some link to an exe, some link to help file, etc.
you want the shortcuts linking to exe to higher scores than the rest.
i *used* to do scoring bonuses based on pattern matching with LINKED files rather than the shortcut.. but im not sure any more, let me check and see if i can re-enable this option.
Yes, exactly.  There's a laziness factor here also.  I don't want to a) clean up my start menu, and b)make shortcuts for my portable programs.  In the past, I would spend a couple of hours and delete all the help file links, uninstall links, reorganize the menus, etc.  But now, i click on my start menu, and see the 4 columns of programs there, and kind of lose my motivation...
4163
Well, that doesn't exactly work.  I don't necessarily want my exe's to be worth so much more than my lnk's, because in my start menu, many of the lnk's are equivalent to exe's in that they run programs.  But I want the non-program launching lnk's to be worth very little, but I still want the portable exe's to be worth a lot.
4164
When I search FARR, I'd like the main exe link to be the top choice over all other kinds of files.  As we know, when we install a program, we get all sorts of links in the Start Menu like the chm, uninstall, website links, etc.  How can I configure FARR to either ignore the non-program running links or give them a really low score.  I can't figure it out.

Also, let's say I have a directory with portable program files (they weren't installed using an installer).  I want FARR to search those also, but I only want it to pick the exe files.

The hard part here is that the useless files and the program running files are named very similarly, especially in the start menu.  Like if i search for "be" expecting to see Betaclock, I want my top choices to be mostly exe links.  The program does this pretty good just by default, I just wanted to see if i could tweak it further.  I wouldn't even mind getting all the other links out of the search altogether, I have no use for them.

The other thing I should probably do is clean my start menu's.  Just delete all those useless links.  But that takes some effort, and that's another discussion.  I was and still am hoping for a start menu manager program for this very reason.  One of the cooler workarounds for cleaning the files is to use a file manager like DOpus, set the directory mode to flat files, then sort by file type, and mass delete all the unwanted links.

Is that real?

Actually, what I did first was use Everything to see where it was.  But maybe I wasn't looking for the right word or something.  honestly, it was just a major brain fart.

Like I said earlier in the thread, the Opus log would have told you where the files had been moved, saving you the hassle of searching for them.
Like I said, my brain stopped working for a while there!  I thought I lost it, I didn't think I had moved it.  The Dopus log is great, though.
4168
Actually, when I was initially writing my post the very first line I had was:

"And you've search your entire system?"

But then I removed it because it seemed like I would have been stating the very obvious. :P

4169
What's showing in the Opus log ? Normally it would show you where the files went.
Oh SNAP!  My bad...false alarm!  Everything is fine.  I forgot where I moved the files.  I was thinking it was in one directory and they were in another.  Sorry everyone for freaking out.  Thanks for the help, I appreciate it. :-[

This is very scary and has never happened to me before, at least since I've had XP.
I was moving some picture files around and Directory Opus froze.  So I forced it to close and when I restarted DOPus, all those files I had moved were gone.  I can't believe it.  Not in the recycle bin; just gone.  Why would they be in the recycle bin?  I didn't delete them; I moved them.  if anyone has suggestions for how to recover them, I'd be grateful.  I've never experienced anything like this.

You may want to check out Weather Center (freeware).
That's not bad!  And it's free, cool.  It's a little too busy for my taste, but overall pretty good.  Meteo Fusion is still better overall in my opinion.  I've been very impressed by Meteo so far.  if they get rid of some of the bugs, it would be perfect.

AdMuncher intercepts *all* network traffic systemwide, not just your browser - thus it can hide ads that appear in 3rd party programs and whatnot. Whether or not this is worth the pricetag is up to you, personally I'm happy with AdBlockPlus (although I've started to notice cases where it slows down stuff considerably :( ).

As for not showing where you're coming from (blocking HTTP Referer) and other filtering tricks, you could check out Privoxy - it's somewhat Geekboy PowerheadTM, though :)
I love Ad Muncher, it's one of my favorite programs.  Adblock plus is really good also, obviously.  I have to somewhat disagree that Ad Muncher is expensive.  First off, the author gives lifetime upgrades.  Secondly, I still insist as I've done before, that you are not going to find any software under $20.  There's almost nothing that's good, even tiny little shareware programs, that is that cheap.  In fact, if I like the software and it's $20 or under, I just get it without thinking twice.  I don't know what a lot of you are expecting.  Software for $5?  The only thing I can think of is iphone apps.  But everything is over $20 these days.  Either that, or it's free.  There isn't much in the $1-$20 range.

[edit] My bad!  I didn't realize Ad Muncher had changed their policy over the years.  They are now a subscription based registration (like antivirus programs).  There's still the option to buy a lifetime license, but it's around $80.  Yeah, that's expensive.  I guess it's just up to you.  It's unfortunate that they went that way because before, with the lifetime license, it was a fantastic deal.  Still, in its defense, it is better than Adblock plus.  How much better...not sure.

Haha, I'm getting some kind of sick enjoyment out of reading this thread.  I've always been dumbfounded by that Super website.  I mean, seriously, what the heck is going on there?  It's like a where's Waldo to find that download link.  It's annoying as hell.  At the same time, the software is pretty great (and free), so what do you say?  I don't know.  Definitely funny on some level, though.
