Oh cOme on, don'T You have A mAcro for thaT? ;)

Welcome aboard, electronixtar.
I have had FARR (great name in my opinion) lurking in my system tray off and on for months: I've been too lazy or unconcerned to explore it.
You have already found out more about it than I. To be honest, I think it takes some detective work to discover how best to exploit FARR (not that I would say so if I thought mouser were listening ;)).

So they'd have to remove all Pine trees from the area too...
I wonder if these people complain when they get too close to a tree
Certainly not, they're within the cone of silence!

That's really very well done, Perry.
Even if I don't buy one I can learn quite a bit by reading your review and following various links.

I'm debating whether to pay for an upgrade to version 4. Anybody got any comments on their experience?

Here's mine, though unrelated to performance.
I recalled Tobias offering a free upgrade to 4 somewhere on DonationCoder...

I am the developer of Superflexible. It is true that in the current version, it takes a bit of hand work to make it auto-start with Windows. This will be made much easier in version 4.0. I hereby promise a free 4.0 upgrade to anybody who reads this. Just send me an email when you need the updated registration code.

...so I emailed him to ask about it. His response was rewarding.

FWIW I prefer the layout in 4, though I see that some do not.

General Software Discussion / Re: HP Smart Web Printing

So, you're not in favour of HP then?  ;)

I agree with you about the 500's, great little machines.
I've always found their laser printers to be excellent and amazingly durable.
Found their scanners to be a pain.
Neither like nor use a lot of the software that comes with their latest printers.

(I have one IIID that's still in service after 20+ years)IID.jpg

But... this software has nothing to do with HP hardware that I can see.
And... the price is right.

I was about to chip in again, but I've stilled my typing finger.

I know I've contributed to this thread but, in hindsight, I wish I had not.

FWIW I don't think DonationCoder is the best forum in which to air our different views on this.

General Software Discussion / HP Smart Web Printing
« Last post by cranioscopical on May 18, 2008, 10:28 PM »
Here is something from HP that aims to make printing (and collection) information from the Web a little easier.

It claims that you can choose and then combine and keep stuff from a variety of web pages, all in one if one wants to, and then both print it and edit it (if desired). It also claims to fix automatically the 'where the heck is the right margin' problem that can occur when printing web pages.

It's free.

4041
It's grim.

Nobody seems to have a firm grip on the reins.

Further, if you or I ran a business with such a lack of culpability we'd either be in jail or filthy rich.

Yes - I managed to get the PayPal reps. name and employee number. I noted the call time/date and content of the response.

Oh, good for you!

What she doesn't know is that I just telephoned PayPal and they have assured me that telling me to return the items was an error on their part and that they never expect fraudulent items to be returned. I apparently have to supply some form of verification that they are counterfeit and that the items have been destroyed.
-Carol

Thanks for updating us all on this. It's interesting to see your progress, and we may learn something from your adventuring.

Too bad the morons can't respond properly without your having to dig in and phone them!
Have you any record of your call, such as a confirming email? Somebody's name? Get the uncomfortable feeling that nobody will be aware of your call in any follow-up stages? I hope your local plod are more helpful than are the boys in blue around here. (P.C. 49 where are you now?)

The eBay performance is all too typical of irrelevant or pointless 'support' responses.
To be fair, I guess these knee-jerk reactions do sort things out for a great many issues, but they surely are tedious and time-wasting for those of us who need the first contact message to be parsed with intelligence.

As an example, recently I had a bad installer with a product from one major vendor.
(The installer interface appeared on screen but its items weren't populated properly -- hovering over any of the interface buttons showed "undefined" and clicking on the buttons did nothing at all).
No big deal to work around this but I contacted support in case the issue bit someone to whom it would matter.

The response from the vendor offered:
  • a canned list of irrelevant solutions, such as "How to rebuild a Mirrored RAID array on an xxx Dual-drive storage system"
  • the profound diagnosis that something was wrong with the installer.

[What's the smiley for a huge sigh of exasperation?]

Living Room / Re: PIN-code
« Last post by cranioscopical on May 17, 2008, 12:35 PM »
recently I had to ask for new pin-code of my card because I have not used it for nearly 2 years and already have forgotten the PIN.
I decided to use my corporate direct debit card the other day and then realized that I'd have to enter a PIN, which of course I couldn't recall. Needless to say there was a line of people waiting for me to complete this transaction. After a minute I had the thought that the PIN might be on my PDA, which it was, in encrypted form. Then I realized that I'd forgotten the password to unlock the encryption!
 ;D

I quite liked the old days when stores were happy to take a cheque.

Living Room / Re: Options to use Donation Credits to purchase stuff
« Last post by cranioscopical on May 16, 2008, 10:42 AM »
For $100 in donationcredits we will send a life sized Cody to your door so you can get a singing telegram from the DonationCoder mascot.
And, just as a follow-up, for $200 in donationcredits we won't   :)

Here's a thought for readers of this thread,

I think the ideas expressed above are good ones.  DonationCoder trinkets are fun to have.

In addition, I'd like to offer an alternative thought.
DonationCoder is a valuable source of interesting material for me as it almost certainly is for you if you're reading this.

For those of us with unused credits, how about donating 30% of them to the site.... right now, while you think of it?
Keeping DonationCoder in good shape is the best value I can get from my credits.

I'm off to do this immediately and hope that, perhaps, others will follow suit.

If you say that it's fine for a company to make such a restriction, then would it be ethical if a computer or car salesman told you that the computer you just bought could not be given to a friend or family member when it outlived it's usefulness for you?

It would if you knowingly signed a contract stipulating that condition.
