DC Website Help and Extras / New Software?
« Last post by y0himba on May 06, 2008, 09:19 PM »
Hi.  I am wondering when https://www.donation...ftware/releases.html will be updated with new or updated software?  If there is a news or blog item concerning new software and I missed it, please direct me there.  There are very few 2008 updates and even those are not very recent, so I am thinking I missed something?  Thanks in advance.

General Software Discussion / Re: Personal Movie Organizers - A quick rundown
« Last post by y0himba on October 14, 2007, 09:43 PM »
I have been using Ant Movie Catalog for at least a year.  I have the DB it creates written to a system backup folder in My Documents, which I have on a separate, non-arrayed HDD, so that when I do a clean install, I can just point Windows to it and boom, nothing lost.

I need to say, it's the best and easiest to use I have found.  Not only does it have dozens of sources to get movie information from, but the scripts are kept up to date with changes to each of the sites they draw data from.  The reports are incredible and extremely customizable.  This is definitely one of the best free programs I have ever seen.

If you are having a hard time finding ContextEdit, here is a link:

Whenever I encounter a Zip file containing a folder with a lot of exucatuables, it has worked for me.  Other than that, just browse to the folder, sort by type, select all executables, right click, create shortcut.  Then move the shortcuts to where ever you want them....

I have been using this since it's second release in late 2003.  NIRSoft has a TON of great free utilities, another I use is "Currports".  I highly recommend everyone take a look at his site.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is the Windows start menu dead?
« Last post by y0himba on July 09, 2007, 09:34 PM »
Not dead to me yet.  As long as I can organize it the way I want it, it's very efficient and useful without running any 3rd party software in the background.

An organized start menu is the first thing I do after a complete fresh install and complete updates.  Can't live without it.

I have been using Ditto for quite a while now, and I find it invaluable.  It's one of the first things I re-install after formatting.

I'm Bryan.  Age 35, Kentucky resident (but I have teeth and wear shoes).  I work as a licensed psychotherapist, but I wish I worked as a programmer.  Computers "listen" better ;>

 ;D Welcome to the forums!

Simply put, you have my respect, which is due you.

You + Computer = Darwin Award? ;D Just kidding, had to though...

Wow, I am residing with giants here.  All the education and lofty purposes, here I am never graduated high school, nor went to college. It's incredibly nice to see this on a forum, being open and truthful without the usual forum "face" contests that go on.  You've all heard the saying about arguing on the Internet...

You can count me in without a doubt.  Every night at 6pm(EST) I scour 30+ sites grabbing new freeware, GPL, and open source programs.  I also get regular alerts about quality shareware that is being offered for free for a limited time.  A prime example was the Windows Vista Business and Microsoft Office 2007 giveaways by Microsoft at http://www.powertogether.com

I would love to help out with regular or semi-regular blog posts.

I am doing that now LOL!  I switched domains and forgot to hit all the forums I am on....

EDIT:  There, that's better!

Hi there.  I'm "y0himba" and I am a 40 year old father of 5 from PA, married for 15 years.  I drive a school bus, and I am a proud support tech.  I run my own small computer troubleshooting business here and I love to troubleshoot, to fix, without loss of data.  To me, if you need to format, it's not fixed.  I also design web sites for businesses here in my small town, and help run a small foundation that gets computers and Internet access to underprivileged families, and small "mom & pop" businesses in our area.  My wife has two Burger King stores, one here in town, the other about 40 minutes from here.

I spend my time either here on the computer, or in The Outer Banks, NC.  I am not very wealthy, but I made a small donation because I truly feel this is a wonderful concept, and I use many of the utilities here, I find then extremely useful without all the garbage that comes with expensive software.

BTW:  Nice to meet you all, long thread to read  :P

Living Room / Re: Planet-killer meteor video: holy snikes!
« Last post by y0himba on July 06, 2006, 09:21 AM »
It would take a much smaller meteor to remove life on this planet.  Not only that, but a meteor that size would crack the Earth, intorduce a planetary wobble, and cause rings of debris aournd the planet.  The gravitational effects prior to strike would be devastating alone.

I drove 1700 miles from PA to OK to visit my folks. Had the laptop plugged into my Minvan's power port (formerly known as a "lighter").  I passed metro areas in PA, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma.  I was able to be online on an unsecured network within 20 miles, sometimes more, of each city.  Not to mention hotels out in the middle of nowhere providing me with unsecured wireless.  The funny part is, the hotel we stayed at said that it had high speed wireless, but did not.  Luckily the other hotels close had wireless  ;)

When I reached Oklahoma, at my parent's house, I was able to connect to 4 unsecured wireless networks, and see 3 secured on top of that in thier neighborhood.  When my dad saw me walking around the house with my laptop using remote desktop to log in here, he though that was just the niftiest thing since peanut butter, so he went out, bought a toshiba laptop, a Linksys wireless router, and 2 pci network cards for his 2 desktops, and had me set it up.  Yes, I secured it.
