General Software Discussion / Re: Powerpoint sucks - what to use instead?
« Last post by superboyac on April 24, 2010, 12:53 AM »
JavaJones, consider using ProShow.
http://www.photodex.com/

It's an amazing slideshow making tool.  I happened across it by accident several years ago, and was blown away by it.  It's relatively easy to use.  Not super easy, but pretty easy.  The great thing is that the slideshows will end up coming out looking fantastic.  And you can export it in a variety of ways, i don't remember them all.  I always liked the stanalone exe files.

The point is, it's easy to use, you get professional looking results with the least amount of effort.  And there's a lot of power under the hood if you care to explore.

And you know what I've seen?  The program gives such great results that I've noticed that it makes people WANT to use it more. Give it a shot.

If you want a small example, I've provided a link below of a slideshow I made for two of my coworkers.  I make fun of them pretty good, and it was hilarious.  I had a couple of people in tears with this one.  This is all ProShow, it makes it so easy and fun to use:

That user would be me!  Yes, I still haven't fixed this on my home computer.  It was working fine until I had to do a clean reinstall of Firefox.  Now I can't get it to work.  Maybe I'll try rebooting also, since I haven't rebooted in a month or so.
You might want to look at browser.link.open_newwindow in about:config
Bingo!  TucknDar for the win!

Outertech, this solved the problem for me.  If this helps you guys with your settings, please keep it in mind.

Hmmm... not sure I'm understanding this correctly. I was under the impression that Linkman could launch URLs in existing tab even if other external links launches in new tabs, which is what I would like. I remember Opere worked like this with Linkman. I already had this working when all external links would open in existing tab, but I'd rather not keep doing that, only for Linkman.

Did I misunderstand something?
Actually, that's a good question.  Outertech will need to answer that.  Can FF be setup so other applications open in a new tab, but Linkman opens in an existing one?
3979
Ok... So here's what's happening. Everything works pretty well, but I'm struggling with the reports. I'll probably have to talk to Pierre and see what's possible to do exactly. I won't post the DB tonight. Maybe during the weekend. Or maybe I'll post something tomorrow... Without the fancy report capabilities. It'll be a first draft.
Thanks for the update.  Looking forward to it, and of course, I appreciate your help.

<b>Firefox can now be configured to launch links into existing tabs.</b> (Tools | Settings | Launch URLs)
-Outertech Support (March 08, 2010, 11:35 PM)
I can't get this to work... I've got this setting in Linkman Lite 7.9.0.30 but launching URLs always opens a new tab in Firefox (3.6.3). Is there some special setting in Firefox I need to change? I've tried several options in the about:config configuration (the ones you get when searching for 'browser.link') but to no avail. Any help much appreciated!

Living Room / Re: two-monitors ergonomics
« Last post by superboyac on April 22, 2010, 09:58 PM »
i notice you have a lot of icons on your desktop.  i'm in the camp that keeps my desktop completely free of icons.  i use LaunchbarCommander with large fonts and a sliding/hiding dock to keep track of any application i might want to launch, and FARR for others.  so i never have to minimize windows to view the desktop to launch anything..
ditto for me.  No icons.  mouser also convinced me with his jedi mind tricks to get two 24" monitors.  It's like crack...I'll never go back.  The next thing I'm going to get is a dual mount monitor arm, which I need for my height.  They're giving me one at work, and I can't wait.  I have long arms, a normal torso, and long legs.  So my keyboard needs to be way low, and the monitor needs to be way high.

General Software Discussion / Re: Google Chrome: Time for a Second Chance?
« Last post by superboyac on April 21, 2010, 09:39 PM »
For the first time, i have started using Chrome semi-regularly.  I will agree with many here:  it is fast.  I mean, really.  It's a lot faster and more responsive than firefox.

Firefox is still my main browser because I have it set up just the way i like.  But I'll tell you what, if i can get Chrome set up the way my FF is setup, i'll switch for good.  I love speed.
3983
Ok, thanks Armando!  I appreciate your help.  I just didn't want you spending a lot of time on something that was basically just a thought experiment right now.  I often have these ideas and they fizzle away into nothing as I get preoccupied with other things.

But I do think it's a worthwhile effort.  People spend a lot of time managing all those action items and histories and meeting notes...formatting, all that stuff.

wraith...that sounds like a good idea.  I'm sure it will come in handy.
3984
OK, Armando.  That's good info, there, as usual!
Sure, if you can help me set something up, that would be great.  Yes, those templates at meetingsense more or less are what I'm looking for.  It sounds like IQ is pretty capable of handling this, which I'm happy about.

Instead of you doing all the work, let me have a go at it, and maybe we can talk offline.  Or we can talk here, if people really want to hear the details.  Or I can start something on the IQ forum.  I don't know.  After today, I may not even be able to spend much time on it.  But I have run into this on and off for a couple of years.  It would be nice to set aside some time and have a good system in place, so I don't have to keep doing the same thing over and over.
3985
@superboyac : I don't know exactly what you had in mind but meetingsense is not exactly free, at 20$/month per user. I'm sure there must be a better (cheaper) alternative. I was going to try creating an IQ Database just for that, for the fun of it. But I wonder what the feature list would be....
Whoa!  I didn't notice that.  I thought it was a normal shareware program.  I'm really not liking this trend of applications going web.  This is off-topic, but I normally don't like web applications vs standalones.  But I also understand that there is value to some web apps, like gmail, google docs, etc.  But I also feel that developers will push more and more for that model because it makes it more acceptable to charge monthly fees.  With regular shareware, it's a one time charge.  If this is the trend, I don't like that.

Anyway, back on topic...I was also thinking about setting up Infoqube.  But I haven't yet, nor do I know exactly how I would do it.  Here is the feature list I was going for:

--Firstly, the main goal here is to have a printout (report) that shows the info I want, properly formatted and all that.  If I didn't need the report, I wouldn't have even started this thread.  For example, if all I wanted was to track action items, I'd just use mylife Organized the way I'm doing now.  but when you have to share a report with people, now we're talking a different software.  I bring this up because I don't know how capable IQ is with generating reports and stuff.  I haven't explored that.

--Action items:  I should be able to add action items to a list, and I should be able to tack their progress with (I'm guessing) a checkbox just to indicate if it's finished or not.  Furthermore, I'd have to be able to add status notes to those action items that explain why it's not finished yet, or what went on with it last week.  And the notes should be dated.  So each action item should have:
title, description, who it's assigned to, potentially multiple status notes (with dates)

--Meeting minutes:  this is pretty simple.  Just a description of what was discussed during the meeting.  It could be multiple short items, or just one item (per meeting) with the details written in the html pane.  The latter is what I'd probably do since i don't like having a ton of little items for most meetings.  Just a short summary paragraph.  So each meeting should have the following information:
title, date, attendees, location, meeting minutes (notes)

Now, let's say I have a meeting now.  I need to provide a piece of paper that is going to pull in all this information and display it somewhat nicely.  So my current meeting report will have to include:
meeting minutes from the previous meetings,
unfinished action items and their status history
recently finished action items
maybe some other stuff

I don't know, that's my idea.  I guess the challenge for IQ is to do it in a way where the action item history is kept track of.  And I don't even know if IQ can do this kind of reporting.  This is pretty much MS Access kind of funcionality.  data, forms, reports...
3986
meetingsense is very close to what I'm looking for.  I actually ran across it not soon after writing this email.  The other one, not so much.

I was also secretly hoping there would be a nice freeware one available.  I was also thinking that Infoqube can do this, but the only problem with that is that I would need to set it all up...it's not an out of the box solution.  Meetingsense looks really good, though.  I'm going to play with it.
3987
Can anyone recommend a software that streamlines the whole meeting minutes and action item process?  I'll explain what I need:

I don't need something that keeps track of tasks like a todo list.  What I need is something that can improve the way a secretary or project manager would normally keep track of meetings and action items that result from the meetings.  Normally, this is done in MS Word, and also in Excel when there are action items involved.

The end product in all of this should be something that I can print quickly that will have all the latest minutes and action items (with status indicators) on it.  It should be able to keep track of past action items to see if they are done or not.  It should be easy to configure how the report should look.  It should be easy to enter minutes, etc.

Doing it in Excel or Word is a lot of repetitive work.  Cutting and pasting all the time, doing all sorts of things with formatting, etc.  I know there must a faster, better way of handling this.  Meeting minutes and action items are a very basic part of normal business work.  Hopefully, there's a software out there that already does this.

Thanks, as always!

I just tried the latest beta that you put out.  The icons still look the same (I don't know if you tried fixing it).  But I also want to confirm that I've seen it also on my home computer and other computers I've tried.  is it just me?  Is there something wrong with my icons or have they become corrupted?

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Bluebeam Review
« Last post by superboyac on April 15, 2010, 02:45 PM »
Ah!  If I'm not mistaken, you are talking about form filling.  Yes, Bluebeam is not focused much on the form features.  But it can do forms in some capacity now.  Actually, a few versions ago, it was something I personally requested from them.  So now, forms are supported.  It's probably not as fully developed as in Acrobat Pro, but it can do it.  At least you can fill out pdf form documents and save them (I know you can't save them in Acrobat Reader).

But you should be able to do a,b, and c with Bluebeam.  if not, there must be some compatibility issues somewhere.  Here's is something I found in the Bluebeam help file, i don't know if it helps:
FDF (Forms Data Format) may be imported and exported from within Revu. This is a format that enables the exporting and importing of data that is entered in the form field.

At this time only Acroform PDFs are supported, XFA forms may not be filled out within Revu.

The other thing that I probably consider a markup, but I don't know if you do, is the typewriter feature that is common to Acrobat.  I use that a lot when I have to fill out forms, but the forms haven't been formally formatted in Acrobat (meaning, the places where you have to fill out aren't actual fields).  So in those cases, I use the typewriter feature to just point to an area and type quickly.  The difference between that and the regular text markup is that the regular one has all sorts of options for font, style, color, background, opacity, fill, etc.  But again, I would call the typewriter a markup, to distinguish it from actual saved forms text.

I just noticed something in your post:  what's the difference between text edits and markups?  I consider any kind of editing on a pdf a "markup".  At least that's how I've been using the word so far.

Interesting, ganrad.
I know Bluebeam has flattening features and stuff like that.  The other thing I've run into is actually having to turn on visibility for markups.  I'm not sure if that's part of the problem in your case, but it might be worth exploring.  I've had experiences where the markups wouldn't print because it was set to not print the markups.  I think I've also seen situations where the markups were hidden in the viewer itself.

But you're right, it could also be a compatibility issue.  Maybe the markups from Bluebeam can't be read by foxit or acrobat.  I have personally never run into a problem where Acrobat couldn't read my edits from Bluebeam.

I'm sure you guys have heard me rave about Bluebeam.  It's my favorite pdf utility.  I've just put up my review for it on my website:

Haha...it's my dream one day to be cartoonized for real.  I think I would make quite the character:

For me it was the serial killer goldfish episode. ;D
That's from waay back!  That was hilarious.  Stan's parents are so funny.  Especially the dad...he overreacts to everything.  Stan's dad is one of my favorite non-main characters.  The episode recently with the big balls was too funny!

I agree with Armando.  i went through this last year, and I thought Sony Vegas was the best one.  A lot easier to use than most video editing apps, very fast, stable.

I love South Park.  The Tourette episode... ;D
